Eddie just happened to be in town with Van Halen at the time and happened to pop by and visit. just imagine with all of the past musicians that have passed over the years? If there is a heaven? Eddie Van Halen selfless and kind heartedly did the guitar solo for free. He even rejected the option to recieve royalties from the song. Eddie was not only an amazing musician but he was also an amazing kind hearted man.

2 icons here, I was fortunate to be serving in USAF at the time and was selected to work security for the first 2 shows. Van Halen was scheduled to appear at reunion arena the next evening. While getting our assignments Eddie Van Halen walks on stage for sound check & blew our mind. Come to find out that it actually was the first time they actually performed together. Priceless!!

This was in Dallas(Irving, TX) MJ was touring for Thriller & Van Halen was on the 1984 tour. Both did 3 dates in Dallas at the same time. This was on MJ’s first night when VH had a night off before starting their 3 dates. My sister went to this concert & came home to tell us she got to witness the whole thing, two days later I went to see Van Halen concert.
Finally, someone who actually knows about this. I was stationed at Carswell AFB at the time and they recruited several of us to work the security front stage and back stage. I saw some crazy things those nights! David Lee Roth “hijacked” a golf cart and was going nuts. They were treating them like bumper cars. Long time ago!

This was probably one of the smartest moves Michael did in his career as having EVH do the solo made this album cool with a entirely new group of fans I’m a white guy that graduated high school inthe early 80s and a big group of other White guys I hung out with who were basically Rock and Rollers were really into this album because of that solo being put in there it was funny because it was definitely all reckonized as Eddie Van Halen way before it was publicized on radio stations I remember car pooling to college with a freind of mine who had long hair and played lead guitar in a local band and he and I sat in the parking lot a few moments late because the song had just came on the radio as we pulled into the campus parking area
I also graduated high school in the early 1980's, growing up in the Los Angeles area. At that time, there were two major "urban contemporary" radio stations in LA, KJLH and KACE. Whenever they played "Beat it", they played a version that cut out Eddie's solo. I guess they didn't want a white rocker getting any airtime on their station.
I remember I bought this song from itunes for my iPod mini over a decade and a half ago. Never thought I'd hear this version of the song with that guitar riff again 😅. First time I see/hear the song in video form

EVH was a revolutionary guitarist. He was the best during his time, but there are many young guitarists today who have massively surpassed him in skill. That being said, we wouldn't have those modern incredible guitarists without Eddie's influence, so he will always remain a legend for that.
