Eddie's original contribution made the song, but when comparing other's translations or renditions I have to say that Orianthi provided the best to the original between the two..
That was cool! I saw Michael Jackson playing that live back in the day, with Jennifer Batten. Must’ve been around 1988. Great concert!!! I saw Prince twice (went like on a Friday, and immediately back on that Sunday), around that same time. Glad I did!!! 🤘🏻🎸
On these two performances, I'm split. Orianthi for accuracy to the EVH original, but Slash for making it his own and tying into what MJ was doing with the stage theatrics.
I agree. But it's also about the context of the show. The show Orianthi was rehearsing was a bowing out retrospective for MJ. In that context, I think it's better to remain more loyal to the original. Slash was doing it at a more active point in MJs career, where a new take on older stuff was a good idea to keep the show alive, and was a huge name in his own right with his own recognisable style. Both have merit, both well executed.
MJ was a genius to put Eddie Van Hallen, Jeniffer Batten, Slash, Orianthi on stages. Not just for the music but also for the entertainment, people enjoy to see those guitarist onstage. And I think that, Slash has the most look from the three other guitarist
In all of Slash’s performances with Michael Jackson every time he just does his own guitar things and his own guitar solos 😅but he is an amazing guitar player no doubt

O que o Slash fez na música foi improviso..... O que que tem ?! Para mim os dois guitarristas são maravilhosos... Música é arte ... Música não tem q ser sistemática sempre .... É isso que diferencia
Definitely, slash played a lot of notes but I couldn't find any connections between phrases or anything. Orianthi played her version of the EVH solo, and did it very good. I think it's not a copy because it's an iconic solo, and must be played right.
Love how Jackson knows how good these guitarists are. He's basically doing what someone like me would do to mess with them, screw up their play, AND then get beat up. The interesting thing is how at times, a guitarist can have that unemotional, 'technician' facial 'lack' of expression that you don't see with any other instrument. Totally missed the 'appreciation' boat, when I was younger and watching MTV. But. Clips give you a chance to get caught up on things you missed, earlier in your life. I like Orianthi's version better.
Actually, one is butchering a legendary solo by a legendary player because he physically cannot replicate the original, the other is a newer shredder who CAN play it replicating the original, as requested by her boss.

Slash plays on his own. He never uses tapping in his any solo.
Slash one is Def better but i am slash fan
what does this even mean
Abu Talha Alvi grammar?
He can't tap. He's said so.
True. He plays what happens to be on his mind and who cares. Even he doesn't care 99% of the times.
Eddie's original contribution made the song, but when comparing other's translations or renditions I have to say that Orianthi provided the best to the original between the two..
Orianthi 100 percent. Super clean, perfectly timed, beautiful guitar sound.
Yeah I think that was an amazing job to perfection even some of the cleanest playing live I've ever heard no joke.
Nah. Its just a copy paste…. 👎
@@adammoffatt3832 i think the rendition was pretty bad to be honest, she missed a lot of notes
Slash: I want a Shirt , I also don't want a shirt.
Slash's designer: Yes.
This is my favorite comment that I’ve seen this week.
Hahahaha.....😄
You could say the designer "slashed" the shirt
XD
Hahahahahahahahhah
Before I even listened to the two different solos, I knew slash was going to change it up as much as he possibly could.
MJ fans wants to hear the song as it was made, point for Orianthi!
well yes she played it correctly but she had no feel and energy it was just "noodled down" by her
You should hear her play Gimmie Shelter when she played with the School of Rock. She was the bomb 💣
Speak for yourself. Slash was showing respect to Eddie by not copying his version.
Enough said.
For me Slash is OVERRATED. IMO
Hands down this went to Orianthi for a proper representation of the original solo with Eddie's elements to it.
Slash has no idea how to play Eddie's solo or even anything close to it. He does his own thing but he can't shred or dive for shit!
@@TheKZOShow mf just said slash cant shred lmao
@@TheKZOShow You're genuinely delusional if you believe he couldn't play it.
That was cool! I saw Michael Jackson playing that live back in the day, with Jennifer Batten. Must’ve been around 1988. Great concert!!!
I saw Prince twice (went like on a Friday, and immediately back on that Sunday), around that same time. Glad I did!!! 🤘🏻🎸
Some solos you can improvise, some you can wing. But this is not only an iconic song...but an iconic solo. You should pay it the respect it deserves.
True that.
Exactly! Well said.
No one comes close to Eddie Van Halen;
Sorry, that is reality.
Agree, but take a look below...

Diferent styles, absolutely
@Jj Cain You sir, are coming across as being completely uninformed if you think all Eddie Van Halen is known for is tapping.

Your body reacts to tones, I heard both solos , and Orianthi gave me Goosebumps, end of story !
Slash definitely puts his own twist on it and makes it sound fresh. Ori stays true to Eddy's version. They both do well.

Eddie is one of a kind but Orianthi played a kick-ass life version.
Both of them r great 👌🏻 but OMG… The way Slash improvised it was brilliant. This guy is a fucking legend.
🥰🥰
On these two performances, I'm split. Orianthi for accuracy to the EVH original, but Slash for making it his own and tying into what MJ was doing with the stage theatrics.
Slash could’ve easily done the solo the correct way but I find it’s way cooler to do your own thing solo and makes the show better
Both have merit, both well executed.
tell it how it is slash was better
@@cheesy4582 Slash is incapable of replicating that solo which is why he makes up his own solo. Otherwise he would have done so at some point.
tell it how it is he was perfectly capable of doing it
MJ was a genius to put Eddie Van Hallen, Jeniffer Batten, Slash, Orianthi on stages. Not just for the music but also for the entertainment, people enjoy to see those guitarist onstage. And I think that, Slash has the most look from the three other guitarist
2:07 - I love how she keeps Eddie's notes but playes it with even more expression on this bit
Slash played totally in the wrong key, but fortunately a fight broke out on the stage, so no one noticd.
I honestly never thought that id see Michael Jackson headbang. 🤘
Last time I heard it was still considered the best pop song guitar solo of all time. Eddie's was just so crisp on the record.
In all of Slash’s performances with Michael Jackson every time he just does his own guitar things and his own guitar solos 😅but he is an amazing guitar player no doubt
Damn! I would be so nervous if I was Orianthi.. Playing for Michael Jackson his own songs knowing how perfectionist he was 😳
What do you think of Slash 'doing his own thing' (because he couldn't play Eddie's solo) - and 100% ruining this sold with the most unmemorable musical trash you can get...!!!!
As awesome as Slash and Orianthi's solos were, nobody can beat Eddie's original. That one is just timeless
No Winner, Slash played senseless solo and Orianthi copied EVH.
Exactly. It didn't even sound like a typical Slash solo. Rare you see him without the Gibson and doing those dives.
Which is why she beats slash.
Actually MJ ruined his solo..
@@partharanke5925 it sounded ruined before MJ intervened.
@@russkate88 I'm agreed that she played it so neatly but the original composer is still EVH.
But I need to add I like all players above .
O que o Slash fez na música foi improviso..... O que que tem ?! Para mim os dois guitarristas são maravilhosos... Música é arte ... Música não tem q ser sistemática sempre .... É isso que diferencia
Exatamente
I have to go with Orianthi, because I was able to make out what she was playing. I couldn't tell what Slash was playing.
Definitely, slash played a lot of notes but I couldn't find any connections between phrases or anything. Orianthi played her version of the EVH solo, and did it very good. I think it's not a copy because it's an iconic solo, and must be played right.
That's becuse he's Slash
This battle isnt fair because time of recording is not the same so the sound of slash isnt close to what it was sounding like live
@Matthew Johnson You have your opinion, and I'll have mine. Good day, woman.
Think abt sound quality bro, slash's clip is way older
Love how Jackson knows how good these guitarists are. He's basically doing what someone like me would do to mess with them, screw up their play, AND then get beat up. The interesting thing is how at times, a guitarist can have that unemotional, 'technician' facial 'lack' of expression that you don't see with any other instrument. Totally missed the 'appreciation' boat, when I was younger and watching MTV. But. Clips give you a chance to get caught up on things you missed, earlier in your life. I like Orianthi's version better.
The fuck are you talking about
Orianthi. Hands down. I don't know what the hell Slash was attempting to play.
His lack of authenticness at the time got the better of him..
Slash did a Slash solo.
Slash is not a very technical guitarrist but a great melodic player. The girl won....
I have to agree on that. That girl can make your heart stop beating, not just by her looks, but definitely by her guitar playing skills, as well.
You sound like a hater. He's a legend and your on body
It’s cool that he did his own thing. That’s the only way he could’ve done it, considering Eddie Van Halen wrote it 😂
One is playing free the other is doing Almost a note by note solo.
Exactly
And plus, the latter was a cover!
Takes more skill to replicate an existing solo then it does to make up your own.
Actually, one is butchering a legendary solo by a legendary player because he physically cannot replicate the original, the other is a newer shredder who CAN play it replicating the original, as requested by her boss.
Pacfanweb Well said!!!!!
I admire Slash for making it his own instead of playing it note for note. He didn't try to copy Eddie he just jammed from the heart.
And in the end he failed hard xD Sounded like crap :S
He didn't do it note-for-note because he can't do it note for note
There's a difference between being flat out incapable of playing something and "making it your own." This was a hack job. Even Michael looked disgusted.
You admire him for sounding like shit. Slash sounds terrible here
@@tonysoprano9370 Do you play? I have been playing for 38 years. Slash sounded like slash. Like he should. Just because I see tons of kids playing it note for note give them no imagination. I only play my own stuff. Mostly classic metal style. I have jammed with people, and did my solo the way it was in my head.
Just because it's not not for note doesn't mean it's not good. All you people flaming slash put up a vid of your own playing this solo. I bet maybe 1 or 2 actually play. In fact just do a vid with you jamming anything.
Let's see if you can even play.
Didn't Eddie do the original in one take after hearing the song once? Legend!
I love the power coming from Orianthi!
Slash did his own way, and that’s awesome! Orianthi did the original solo, and she played very good. I liked more Slash way because improvise is the hard thing to do, and also I liked how sounded Slash solo. Both did a great job!
Curso de Guitarra Completa Eddie Van Halen made the original solo
Its not hard to improvise if youve got talent
Yeah i love how he plays stuff his own way especialy how he does his does the godfather theme

Orianthi. The closer to the original the better coz I never gets tired of EVH's legendary solo.
Wins Van Halen for the iconic solo which Slash demonstrated clearly that cant nail it on a different mode. While Orianthi just reminded us that van Halen can't be played on a different way, so sure she wins over /
Its pity she ruined her career under the shadow of Sambora considering she is 10times more talented than him. Keep it up Orianthi you are the best

When Slash plays live he doesn't rehearse, he just plays
If it was played by slash on the original, this song wouldn’t make no.1.
You can always recognize a great guitarist by his own tone and style. So Slash is recognizable and he plays his own version of VH solo. You can tell it is Slash just by hearing it.
Orianthi on other hand done a better cover, almost original.
Utter fking bollocks!!!! - Slash never had the technical ability to play Eddie's solo, so instead, we are 'treated' to the most shockingly un-musical, forgettable audio diarrhea you could get - and, ruin a great song!
SLASH!! That other person didn’t touch one hair, on my body! Slash practically undressed me! Eargasmical! 😅😅
2:04 am I going paranoid or is Orianthi miming it? Because I hear whammy bar stuff, but she's not even touching the bar...
Yeah saw that too
It could be a body bend
🤔
I’m not sure the videos in the This Is It movie always correspond with the audio. Especially when the songs are being rehearsed.
Could've been a palm dive
Gotta say I think Orianthi takes it. Clean and loyal to the original.💪🏻🤘🏻
Orianthi, absolutely
Who in their right mind is going to try to reinvent an Eddie Van Halen solo? On the other hand, Ori does a fantastic job.
Eddie Van Halen: Move kids, let me show You how to do this, pay attention 😎
They're both great, but the Question is, who did it better?? She destroyed him in this solo this song, a Girls Rock, olive girl Musician.
I needed to hear Eddie's original version to cleanse my brain of these two hack job solos.
I hear ya in spades - but if i had to choose one for the worst, it was Slash in spades.
Orianthi ain’t bad at at all. So many guitarists as good or better. I hate to think she gets credit cuz she’s obviously a girl. None the less I don’t particularly like her style. Just my humble opinion. And no I can’t play as well as she does. Never cared for slash either. This solo in my opinion belongs to eddie
But are talented guitarist BUT! If the true question is who replicated the original version then Slash in no way replicated VH version, Ori’s version although not exact was closer.
I love the sound of the guy playing the triangle, well good.
Nobody beats it like Eddie RIP
Not sure what EVH got upto in the privacy of his bedroom is any of your business
@cjetelomar2010 r/whoosh
And that teen down the street
Slash has the perfect stage presence for this. But in terms of sound I still prefer the original solo
What makes slashes solo better is that he had his own style for the song and drop tuning
They each played to their style.
Slash didn't come from the school of Van Halen.
Slash came from the school of Jimmy Page and Joe Perry.
True, Slash would have failed.
Michael's like "ok, Slash that's enough"
This solo belongs to both EVH and Jennifer Batten. No one else.
Actually it belongs to Eddie, but he was drunken when recorded it, so he asked Jennifer to teach him how to play this solo but she doesn't knew how to play this solo at that time.
It's one of the greatest guitar solos ever put on record and Eddie really respected Slash for being one of the few who didn't copy his style of playing and as for Orianthi you don't get hired to play in Michael Jackson's band without being something special.
Fking utter bollocks!!!! - Slash never had the technical ability to play Eddie's solo, so instead, we are 'treated' to the most shockingly un-musical audio diarrhea you could get - and, ruin a great song!

People may say Slash' solo was off but actually it's not. He's doing it freely without reference to the original solo part. It's his own version the *"Slash"* way. ❤
Right, he "slashed" it up alright. Lol.
slash wihout a gibson les paul
a rare sight indeed

Nothing is as good as the original but she seriously kicked his ass
Not true. Orianthi just did a straight up EVH cover.
Slash played his own solo, using his own style, which is unqiuely Slash.
So even though Orianthi did a great imitation of EVH, Slash wins in Originality, and his solo was amazing.
Hard to compare because they played two different solos
um no she really didn’t lmao 😂
Both are good. I like Slash's creativity and guitar mastery. Live, artists often ad lib anyways and do not usually do it note for note as whats on the album or the radio.
Orianthi , great guitar solo .
Eddie's was the best but Orianthi killed it! Girl has it going on...
