  • Remember the famous "we need more points" moment from NFL Primetime to close out the 1999 NFL season? Well, that happened in 1979, and actually determined who would get the final spot in the playoffs in the NFC. This is the story behind the absolutely crazy finish to the 1979 NFL season, which came down to point differential

Worth mentioning the sequel in 1980: Dallas needed to beat Philadelphia by 25 points to win the division title, they went ahead 35-10, Eagles came back to lose 35-27. Dallas did make the playoffs, but only as a wild card, and lost to Philly in the NFC Championship game.

I was 11 and living in Chicago when this went down. I remember being at a church function that night with my parents and every guy in the place was crowding around a few who had brought transistor radios. The place was buzzing when the Cowboys came back. I loved seeing that! Thanks for the video!!. I did not remember Mugs Halas dying that day, so that adds to my understanding of the emotions of the day.

I was the same age(11) when the Cowboys-Redskins were playing. I hated the Cowboys back then and when Washington took a 13pt lead on that Riggins run, i was jumping up and down. Then Roger Staubach made one of his last comebacks. When he threw that pass to Tony Hill to win the game, i shed a tear.

Those NFL seasons when you’re that age, something very nostalgic about that. In my opinion anyway, the best time to be a sports fan in your entire life is the period of time when the players are your age group. That ended for me in 2019 when Eli retired. We’re the same age. He was pretty much the last one in the sports world born in 1981 that wasn’t retired yet. It’s just not the same AT ALL when the guys coming into the league are a generation removed from you. Like, you’re old enough to be their dad generational gap. Don’t get me wrong I will always love the NFL, NBA, MLB. But I finally understood why the older dudes at work could care less about whatever is happening in sports. I remember one guy saying “I haven’t watched baseball since they broke up The Big Red Machine.” At the time I just didn’t get it. Now I do. What I’m trying to say is enjoy these years in your fan hood. Because once you hit a certain age, and it’ll come out of nowhere it seems, you just don’t care nearly as much. I’m less than ten years older than you guys, so it’s around the corner for y’all too.

I was 10 years old in 1979, and I was with my family visiting my grandparents in the Chicago area that weekend. Our plan was to drive home to Michigan that day, and we left before the game started. As the video shows, there was snow on the Soldier Field turf. There was also snow and ice on Interstates 90 and 94. There were numerous accidents that day throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. By the time we got to mid Michigan, we had seen 11 accidents. We stopped counting when we became number 12.

At worst, I feel point differential is worth looking at (okay, there were the 1989 Bengals, who had a triple-figure point differential, but only finished 8-8, since they could blowout a team 61-7 but also lose 13-7).

I really enjoy your channel and NFL analysis...So thank you for posting such interesting content. As a lifelong Washington fan 1979 was a painful end to a surprisingly good season. In that epic final game against Dallas I believe the officials made a mistake by not allowing Washington a final FG attempt. As time expired Don Warren caught a Theismann pass at about the Dallas 40 yard line. As soon as he caught it Warren called for a timeout but the officials ruled that time had expired. Slow motion replay indicated that there was still one second left but the officials huddled and ruled that time had expired and game was over. Sadly in 1979 there was no challenge system. Would have loved to see if Moseley could have made a GW FG with :01 left. It would have been a herculean effort at 57 or 58 yards but he was in his prime and he was having a great year.
Another painful reality to this season was that if everything is the same (Wash and Chicago both 10-6) BUT it is 1978 or 1980 instead of 1979 then the tiebreaker would be decided by Common Opponents and in that scenario Washington wins with a 5-1 record compared to Chicago's 4-2 against their common opponents. So 1979 was gut wrenching and 1980 without Riggins and with Theismann getting hurt was a big step back. But there was some good news. Jan of 1981 Joe Gibbs became Head Coach :) and we had 12 amazing years of success. Biggest tragedy for the franchise was the day Dan Snyder bought the team in 1999. It's been 23 years of darkness. Ugh. HTTR

It was a tumultuous day to say the least with the death of George 'Mugs' Halas Jr. which in itself is still a mystery. There were parts of the 85 Super Bowl team on this team with Payton, Fencik, and Dan Hampton. The Bears actually had a TD called back in the wild card against the Eagles that many thought cost them the game. It's not likely they advance to the Super Bowl and even beat the Steelers but the wheels are set in motion for their success for the next 12 or so years.

If Clarence Harmon doesn't fumble, it would have been 4th and inches with about 3:20 left in the game at the snap. Washington was better than Dallas that year and had killed them at RFK a month earlier. Was happy to see the Rams upset Dallas in the playoffs two weeks later, but had to wait until the 1982 NFC championship game to get full revenge for this one.

Is there a video about 1967 Baltimore Colts season? The team was 11-1-2 and didn't make the playoffs. The Colts' official winning percentage of .917 (based on the NFL's non-counting of ties for such purposes prior to 1972) is the best in North American professional sports history for a non-playoff-qualifying team. It is also remarkable that the Colts entered the final game undefeated and yet didn't make the playoffs.

'79 Washington: the only team in NFL history to head into a final regular season weekend with a chance to earn the #1 playoff seed but ended up missing the playoffs entirely.
The only other times that had a chance of happening was with the entire 1980 AFC playoff field, 1985 Miami and 1987 Seattle

@@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820 except that's not really true. One of my hobbies is running through past scenarios. JG9 puts out great content but he made an error there. Heading into Week 17 MIA's best scenario was to be tied with TEN and OAK (plus possibly PIT if they tied BAL). A three way tie between MIA, TEN and OAK would have gone to strength of victory. By the end of Week 16 and before Week 17 it was no longer possible for MIA to catch OAK in SOV.

This has turned into one of my favorite episodes. I remember when this happened but i didnt know about point differential(s)(i was only 11 at this time). All i remember is the Redskins had to win to get in. I also remember that Tampa Bay had to beat the Chiefs to win the division, i never though about Chicago getting in. That Bucs-Chiefs game was horrible, it rained the entire game. The game winning kick for the Bucs was almost a disaster, the holder almost bobbled the snap. The Bucs kicker had just enough to kick it through. If the Chiefs would've won, the Redskins would be in anyway.

That's funny that Jag Gator mentioned Chevy Chase, since I read one of my mom's football books (from 1972), and under the Mike Phipps profile (back when he played for the Brownies) Richard Nixon said that the Browns passing game was weak, but Phipps was good (I think he was okay). I thought, "Forget Nixon, my football president would be Gerald Ford". Right after Jag Gator mentions the cardboard cutout of Chevy Chase, and Chase played Ford in early SNL skits...and here we are, dealing with a Cardinals QB who played an abysmal game (Neil Lomax, please save us, we have a football chucker who plays like Bernie Lomax!).

This reminds me of how the old college BCS used to be. Like how if you were playing a lower end school, and you were a ranked team that was expected to be in a BCS bowl, you had to completely destroy that lower end school. It'd be like Alabama today having to play Louisiana tech, and having to win by 60 pts to impress the CPU and not drop in the rankings.

I loved it when my Oklahoma State Cowboys upset Oklahoma in 2001 when OU needed to beat us by as many points as possible and one local sportscaster predicted a score of 45-3. There was just one problem. My team won instead.
In 2004, Cal lost a chance at a BCS bowl because they had to play a just alright Southern Mississippi team in a game rescheduled by a hurricane and couldn't win by enough points to maintain a lead over Texas even though a couple weeks earlier they nearly lost to a worse Kansas team. Cal ended up losing to the late Mike Leach and his Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Holiday Bowl.

In Australia, in all Australian Rules Football leagues of all levels, Points Percentage (Points Scored / Points Against) is the 1st tiebreaker for a team to make the playoffs/finals. This gives an incentive for teams to keep scoring throughout all games even when leading as those points could mean the difference between a playoff/finals game or the end of the season.

  • @michaellyons9820

Not mentioned in the video is the fact that the Washington-Dallas game was head to head to decide the NFC East Division. The Cowboys were in the playoffs but wanted the division title. As a Cowboys fan, it was delicious clinching the division in a heart-stopping one-point win that also eliminated your archrivals from the playoffs. I do remember the moment when the St. Louis-Chicago final score was announced on the Dallas broadcast. That meant if the Cowboys won the game by just one, the double whammy of also eliminating the Redskins would kick in. And that's what the Cowboys did. In my estimation, it was one of two extremely satisfying regular season victories in the Tom Landry era. The other came on November 1, 1981, when the Cowboys rallied from a 14-3 deficit at the end of the third quarter for a 17-14 victory over the Eagles in Philadelphia in the first matchup since the Eagles' victory in the 1980 NFC Championship Game.

Is a Team better because because they beat every team in the NFC East and loses almost every other game than a team that beat a variety of teams?

The Bears lost a head to head point differential to the Vikings in 1977. Though both teams made the playoffs, the Vikings got the division because of a weird tie breaker. Both teams were 9-5, 1-1 against each other, 6-1 in the division and 8-4 in the conference. Next in line was head to head point differential. The Vikings won by 6 in week 5 on a fake FG in OT while the Bears won by 3 in week 10. The Bears went all out. Payton set the rushing record with 275 yards, but the Vikings were able to do damage control. Goal line stands early in the first quarter and late in the fourth quarter, along with thwarting a Bears fake FG, kept the damage to just a 3 point loss.

Beating up on shit teams and padding stats doesn't make you're team good. Meanwhile, resilient teams who know how to finish are what make contenders.
Teams that rain points also are the teams which fold under pressure and tight games when things don't go their way.
Look at the Broncos vs Seahawks, or Mannings many Colts teams that were one and done in the playoffs of the 07 Patriots or KC for two of the last three seasons and more.
