      Rewatching the series after the finale there's so much stuff you see with different eyes. The first time you see this, it's a moment of hope for Bojack, when he was full of guilt for Sarah Lynn's death Diane was there for him, to making him realize he can be good, he can change. Now it's kinda depressing, it's a demonstration of how sometimes life can't change, everything will go against you and there's nothing you can do about it

      It’s probably why he tries to create a better version of the past with Ethan Around and when that doesn’t seem to work in the next season he decides to go further into the past to when he was a small child hanging out at the family summer home in Michigan, only to find that even that past as idyllic as it seems is also tainted by the ghosts of the past and the lingering pain of his own choices. And thus heads forward a hopefully better future which will be represented by Hollyhock

    I find it so interesting that Diane brings up the staircase thing. It's not that funny of an observation, the detail was too subtle to notice, and yet the writers of this show are clearly talented, making sure each line has a purpose. Then I thought about how Diane's observation was one on architecture...

    Y'know, BoJack talked about being nothing but poison and destroying everything he touches, but then he turns around and tells Diane that she's too good to be writing Instagram captions. I think Diane's the one person who he not only hasn't ruined, but she's the only character so far who's actually benefitted from knowing BoJack. Remember Season 1 where he writes her that letter from her prom date and how happy that made her? That's gotta count for something. No matter what he says about himself, he made her less miserable. So there's his redeeming quality, folks.

    • @Skadfun
      @Skadfun 8 років тому +121

      Agreed. I think if anything, if Bojack can change, it is going to be through knowing Diane.

    • @jakobthomas1926
      @jakobthomas1926 7 років тому +46

      Or this could make things worse for Bojack if he realizes this. What if he realizes that Diane is his only way to happiness/self-fulfillment? It could go to him making moves on her again. I have a theory that Mr. Peanutbutter is going to die at some point in the series, and if that happens, Bojack could seriously ruin his relationship with Diane by coming on to her at this time, seeing her as his only hope for happiness. He's done similar things with Wanda, Princess Carolyn, and Sarah Lynn, believing he was in love with them.

    • @tivednagol9127
      @tivednagol9127 7 років тому +28

      Jakob Thomas, you've got a point there. Although it might not. I think BoJack is aware that he and Diane are better off as friends. I'm hoping he's learned something after trying to sleep with Charlotte then Penny. Something along the lines of "Okay, Diane's the last person I have left. Whatever it is, is it worth losing her?"
      But then again, he'll probably make moves on her and she'll cheat on Mr. Peanutbutter, who'll finally break. That seems likely. But that would depend on the two of them, not just BoJack.

    • @jakobthomas1926
      @jakobthomas1926 7 років тому +17

      If you think about it, they already have stuff set in place that could lead to that.
      Mr. Peanutbutter is running for governor, and Diane is working on that web page where she might have to out her husband. What Diane outs Mr. Peanutbutter and ruins his campaign for governor? Diane has done similar things in the past, pushing her own agenda , even if it means hurting her husband. It could be the straw the breaks the camel's back. There's no telling the extent this could damage their marriage. And when Diane has trouble with Mr. Peanutbutter and wants to avoid him, who does she always turn to? Bojack. And what if Bojack sees this as an opportunity? What if he hasn't learned and tries something? And depending how damaged Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter's marriage is at this point, she might even go through with it.

Here, Diane tells Bojack millions of people are better off for what he did in Horsin' Around, only for his legacy on that show to be destroyed because of his mistakes. The thing that I love about this is that even though the show makes fun of shows like Full House, this scene understands why someone would watch it. Even if they're cheesy and aren't that insightful, they make for a good escape for someone going through a terrible home life. And sure, I can criticize and make fun of Full House-type shows all I want, but one thing I don't want to do is go after the people who love them, because at the end of the day, I'm never going to know what a show means to someone, whether it's good or bad.

They had fights and friction this season but she never truly casts Bojack out of her life. Her honesty with Bojack’s impact with other people is this episode’s saving grace. I actually saw Sacrhiffilas Productions do a review of season three of this show, and when he got to this point when covering said episode, he said, and I qoute: Counterpoint... yes it was. As long as Sarah Lynn kept hanging around Bojack, this would have been her fate.
    Looking back, I understand what he meant. Bojack has had a long history of hurting people, whether unintentionally or through his own will. He got Herb fired from Horsing Around and never kept contact, resulting in them losing their friendship. He betrayed Charolette, by almost sleeping with her daughter. He slept with Todd's childhood friend to relieve his stress and pressure from the Oscar campaign, he broke into Diane's and Mr. Peanutbutter's house, he undermines Princess Carolyn multiple times as both one of his girlfriends and agents. Sarah Lynn was doomed to suffer from his actions because of how close they were from Horsing Around. It didn't matter how long they were together, anyone who has a relationship with Bojack suffers in some way. And it's because Bojack cares more about his owns feelings and wants above his so called friends. This is evidence by the fact that he went to Sarah Lynn when she was at her lowest and needed a friend because she felt she was just another celeb who had no one that truly cared for her. When she saw Bojack, she thought he wanted to have a chat with her, only to find out he wanted her on his talk show. Similar to how he ruined his relationship with Herb by choosing his fame over his friends. He also was with Sarah Lynn for years and saw her as a daughter, but that didn't stop him from being inappropriate with her, like what he did to Charolette's daughter.
    During season three, Sarah Lynn wasn't present that much in those episodes until the 11th one, where we see that she is trying to make the most of her life. It's not perfect, as the paparazzi's still harassing her, and she is struggling with dealing with her addiction problems. But we see that she is nine months sober, giving us and her hope that she is getting better. The problem comes when Bojack calls to go on a bender. This explains why she wasn't present to begin with. It's almost as if the writers were really pointing out the fact that Bojack not being in her life was actually helping her. And we see that in those nine months without him, she was getting better. But he throws her on the drug wagon again just so he can lament about his feelings, and ignore Sarah Lynn's. She kept talking about 'how child actors should not be a thing' or 'how she wanted to go to school again'. But he doesn't listen, he uses Sarah Lynn as a vessel so he can project his problems onto someone else, to get out his sadness. Bojack not hearing Sarah Lynn's problems and not seeing how much she was in pain, is what caused her to die. He ignored her own problems, when she was clearly as broken as he was. He puts himself first! That's the poison Bojack is talking about.
    Not only that, Bojack was the reason that Sarah Lynn got this complex that she needed to be famous and please everyone to get people to like her. A cycle of abuse Bojack had, which he repeated into her. But it took a bigger toll on her. Had Sarah Lynn managed to see how toxic Bojack was and how it was hurting her, had she managed to cut him out of her life just as Hollyhock did, maybe she could have become a better person and managed to achieve her own dreams. But... sadly, Bojack was all she had left. She saw him as a father figure because she never truly had one, and even though he wasn't perfect, she was willing to see through his flaws because he was broken just as her.
    The thing I can take away from this: Broken people don't fix other broken people, they may end up shattering them even more to the point they don't recognize themselves.

    Everyone talks about how Bojack helps Diane in the end, even if he was a bad guy. And that’s not untrue. But it’s also easy to forget how they even came into each other’s lives in the first place. She, just like us, has an incredibly intimate, front row perspective on Bojack’s motivations and traumas.
    Its ESPECIALLY hard to know and love someone for exactly who they are, to see every possibility for who they could become, and still force yourself accept that they’ll never change.

    i love this show deeply and am extremely glad it was made but it has also managed to make me depressed. bojack’s entire character-especially after season 6-makes me sad. literally just thinking about him, everything he did, and where it all left off has made me extremely sad. for the audience, it’s such a conflicting battle due to the fact that we can’t help but sympathize with bojack because we know that he has very good intentions and understand the fact that he truly has nobody (anymore). he has nothing except himself. but at the same time, when you look at all the things bojack has done, you can’t help but feel sadness, irritation and even anger towards him because we know that he basically did this to himself. he is the reason he ended up alone. he is the reason he has nobody in the end. he is the reason all of his relationships were destroyed, even after he changed for the better. i want him to be happy and cared for so badly, and the last fucking thing i want is for him to truly spend his days alone. i constantly think about “what could’ve been” for bojack in terms of maintaining happy relationships with sarah lynn, hollyhock, pc, etc- he never HAD to be alone. he could’ve had family and friends who stuck with him till the end and just thinking about it makes me feel sad for him. but at the same time, i know he deserves it due to his own decisions. it just sucks because we want him to be happy and healthy but we also can’t help but root against him due to all the shit he’s done

    While this is a well written monologue on BoJack’s part, I think the writers subtly used the “I’m poison” bit as a way to illustrate BoJack’s subtle narcissism.
    Think about it: in light of Sarah Lynn’s death, he’s making it all about him. It looks like he used his self-loathing to steer Diane into sharing that personal story of how much BoJack’s work meant to her, because he knew she would tell him what he wanted to hear all along.
    On repeated viewing of this scene, that undercurrent would always rub me the wrong way when it came to BoJack’s character.

      This isn't the first character I've seen it pointed out with, but focusing on self-loathing is still being self-abdorbed.
