    Great information, thanks. I've never heard of using cat litter before, but it makes sense. Since it's clay, it's similar to aquasoil and would have a similar buffering effect.

    I just set up a 20 gallon with a Novak style plenum. I'm going to document how it goes. I'd love to test his BCB bags, too. Maybe someday.

    I've been keeping fish for 40 years, and I've never purchased a water test kit. My aquariums are heavily planted, and i do water changes every week. I use my eyes to test my water parameters. If my fish look happy and they're eating, all is well.

      Wow, that is a long time, I am also at the 40 year mark now. Was around 8-10 when I got my first tank. Lots of plants, weekly water changes, it is hard to go wrong if you do that.
