I remember the original ARP Odyssey. Back in 1972, I was an A/V geek in high school and running the FOH mixer for Friday night concerts/dances in the gymnasium. One of the acts had this guy that looked and played guitar a bit like Jimi Hendrix, and who had an Odyssey on a small classroom table. He really only touched it occasionally to do a brief electronic sort of scream between songs-not much real playing. After the concert, I was helping pack up the PA system and I remember seeing a janitor up on stage trying to retrieve the little table and watched in horror as the power cable on the ARP snagged on something and the unit started sliding off the table. The Jimi lookalike turned around just in time to see his expensive little toy about to fall off the table and hit the hard wooden stage. He dove in what appeared to me to be a sort of slow-motion Kung fu move-like something out of the Matrix, and amazingly he caught it just inches from hitting the stage. The janitor just looked on with an apparent mixture of embarrassment and ennui. These things if I recall were selling for a thousand bucks back when this happened. By today’s dollars that would be like the price of a Voyager Pro XL or even more I think. But he made quite a save. That was my memory of the original ARP Odyssey.

Definitely some great coverage here. Nice music too! :-) I am definitely looking forward to someday buying one of these new beasties. I had access to one of the originals (rev 2) for about 6 months back in the 1980s, and I had a blast with it then. It would be nice to see it connected to the SQ-1 squencer.

to be honest, you can achieve these sounds with an ms20 mini, you could buy a doepfer dark energy and dark time and an arturia micro brute or you could buy a doepfer a100 starter for a bit extra
Yes what a synth Even though to some it may not initially seem as powerful as others out there (I use the word initially), it's the aura of the unit that is it's allure IMO I'm waiting for the crazy sounds people will provide from it And it's just beautiful
You should had this too your arsenal I've added it to mine and everyday I turn it on it more and more fun. Super is with the sq1 or doepher sequencer just got my flash back hooked up and using the electro harmonic step as a separate lfo

As far as the issue with tuning by ear, here's what I do for live performances. I have headphones connected to the headphone jack and a mute or kill switch in front of the main outs, so I can hear the synth even though the audience can't.You can also put a tuner right before the mute to get more fine tuned results. Mix the oscillators one at a time with the tuner or by ear, bring them up to the levels you want them mixed to, viola! It sounds like a pain, but it really isn't.
Great overview, and the song at the end is absolutely beautiful. Thanks! I was curious about the bit about the curve on the square wave (at 9:33), so I decided to do some tests of my own. My conclusion is that the difference between a 90 degree square wave and a slanting square (such as is on the new korg) is pretty much inaudible. However once that slanting square is waveshaped to put a curve in the slant (such as on the old arp), that does indeed slightly change the character of the sound. However, it's subtle enough I can't imagine anybody would notice the difference. I imagine other aspects of the synth affect the character of the sound much more.
Why do I subscribe to this channel? All these well done, in-depth reviews of top-notch gear by delightfully charismatic folk, such as Nick, just make me want to spend more money on gear! And then you guys have the audacity to actually play beautiful tunes on the gear! Ah! It's like you actually care or something!!
5:20 "Type 2 is the so called 'Moog infringement' filter" Dear god! I've gone cross-eyed! Arp copied the Moog filter, then years later Korg copied the Arp synth and included the copied Moog filter, and now Behringer have cloned a Korg clone of an Arp copy of Moog filter.
Best review yet and lovely tune at the end which shows how musical this bad boy can sound, tbh, most of the sonic demos, korg's official one included, have not done this synth justice.. Well done, nick!
If you look at 1970's concert footage of bands that used Odysseys, Minimoogs, etc., you will see that most bands had a set of headphones connected to their synth and they would retune it or change pitches between songs while the front man was talking to the audience. Unlike the Odysseys and Pro-Soloists, synth players would frequently have to retune the oscillators on their minimoog even if they didn't change the pitch on an oscillator because Moog synths, unlike ARP synths, had a tendency to drift in and out of tune

I went into a music shop yesterday and tried the Korg Arp Odyssey, the Korg Monologue, Arturia Minibrute and Roland SE-02. All sounded great, but the Arp won it for me. Just to have that many analogue synths sitting around plugged in to play with, I had to pinch myself - I started making music in the late 1990s and in general you could only get proper analogues second hand. We are in a golden age of analogue. Any of these machines would be a great addition to a studio, but fwiw here are my impressions: - Monologue. Very powerful, solid sound. Very full at the low end. Great waveshaping. Filter has a Curtis-ish sound, nice and strong; it didn't sound typically 2-pole to me. Looks stylish. The controls on the envelopes didn't work for me at all though - not intuitive enough. Probably after a while you'd get used to it. Overall, for the price, bearing in mind this is a two osc VCO synth, it is incredible. - Minibrute. Love the multimode filter on this. You'd be tempted to get it just for that, esp. as it has an input for processing stuff. The waveform mixer with slides is great, gives you visual reference of levels, reminds me of my SH101, but with things like the ultrasaw option (which is really fat) and the multimode filter it is a lot more sonically flexible. For me two envelopes is overkill when you only have one osc; one env would be simpler and quicker. This has a reputation for doing distorted gnarly sounds with its metallizer and brute factor knobs, which are not my bag - but it can do smoother, more subtle stuff just as well. To my ears it had a big, round, pleasing sound. Again, incredible for the price. It would be interesting to compare with the Microbrute. - Roland SE-02. Very solid, deep, tight Minimoog type sound. With three oscs, it is incredibly fully featured and flexible. It has lovely touches like you can switch the LFO between one cycle, free running and retriggered at the start of each note - brilliant to have those options. To have something as good as this for the price, and the size, is hard to believe. Plus unlike other Boutiques it has a proper power input barrel connector. The big downside is that the small size and sheer number of features makes it quite fiddly to program. The knobs that act as switches need some force, and gave the feel like they might break with heavy and prolonged use. I think one reason why the JU-06 Boutique was so popular is that is has a small number of controls, so they are not so tightly packed in. - Arp Odyssey. I have never had much interest in this synth. It gets described as an aggressive funk and rock n roll machine, which is not my bag at all. So I only played it because it happened to be on display. But I loved it instantly. It has that magic combination of sounding fantastic and also being immediate and hands on, but with just enough complexity to hold your interest and keep you exploring. I quickly got a lot of awesome dance music sounds out of it, e.g. a big fat square bass like on Everybody In The Place, and also setting the VCOs to an interval like a fifth gave great stabby sounds. This was the synth I kept coming back to.
I kind of could watch and listen to your reviews all day. Really, you have this downright honest, fun and entertaining style to review synthesizers. All the best to you kind sir!🙏👍❤️
My reason for choosing the module version of this synthesizer over the keyboard version is not due to the reduced-size keys (I’ve played my microKorg XL for whole gigs). It’s due to having had too many keyboards in the last few years and no modules. In any cause, this is a knockout remake. One of the across-the-board plus sides of this version is that the damage risk of the Odyssey MkIII keyboard is shot to the moon, never to return.

Again, thanks for a wonderful demo. Look foreward to more. I just ordered a Roland JD-XA and hope you will review it like you did with the JD-Xi. The Odyssey either has a line impedance mismatch or there is excessive capacitance in the audio output of it's preamp circuit. With that scope you could troubleshoot that easily. Need scope probes though.
Thanks for another great review: good to see the build quality of the instrument in close-up, and to get a clear impression of the filter types in particular. I'm starting to get a little bit of monosynth fatigue though: all of these new instruments do pretty much the same thing, and do the analogue synth thing in different ways, but nothing we haven't heard before. Looking forward to the next wave of instruments, which will hopefully add something new. I guess that's what DSI have been attempting with their products, but I'm still waiting for new instruments that are built to last 30 years.
Compared to a MS-20, I'd pay $200 more for an Odyssey any day! The ARP is much more flexible and has a better sound (although the jack field on the MS-20 and the resonant HPF evens things up feature wise, but not sonic wise).
The original was the one used in the center solo of Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" (1978), programmed and played by "The Other Joe" Vitale himself... I'll bet Vitale might still have the original, AND this newer version!
Interesting your comment on the sound variations from the Arp and the Korg and also your reference to same units sounding different . My point being that back in the 80's I bought an Octave kitten from Chase in london and on a repair they had a robery and my unit was one that was stolen, So as they were a good bunch of guys 'sikhs if i remember correctly, they replaced my unit BUT it did sound different in quite an obvious way to me. So there not single sound out there. anyway... Have fun .
Benedict Johnson yeah I wanted a clean synth-> Scope input without introducing any other processing into the chain. Regarding the difference in wave width, as I couldnt hear it, the pitches are slightly different which is why.

The Korg Odessei iOS version is tremendous as well with the added feature that it has a poly mode. It's tragic that korg abandoned it without making it auv3.
Considering it's made in China and the circuit boards are surface mount by machine (no labor) It could of been cheaper. Not everyone plays live, So the case should of been optional. What i didn't like about Korg, MS-20 mini then released a full size kit for almost twice the price, Does the extra VCF chip and a bit more plastic really cost that much. Are they going to do something similar with the Odyssey, Full-size with drive amount control on the back. Some might hold back and wait for the full-size.
If you think the waves on the scope looked "the same" then you need to get your eyes checked. The top ones were clearly wider. Not saying this means much but it needs to be said.
i tried this in my local music shop and trust me this thing is a fucking beast what a sound XD !!! i love push the limit of the filter and make real analog drum sound or bass line with the drive, now i wan't it so much ^^ the only thing that was backward is the fact there is no patch memory system, but who cares it's a real analog machine ^^

the build quality is a huge dealbreaker for this price. The slim keys aren't very nice either. very nice review, NICK BATT FOR PRESIDENT!
Build quality is fine. And the carrying case is very nice. Slim keys are not as issue. Use MIDI.

Seems a little odd there's no midi out, considering Korg claims to have reduced the size in order to make it fit nicer in modern tiny studio setups.

Again, thanks for a wonderful demo. Look foreward to more. I just ordered a Roland JD-XA and hope you will review it like you did with the JD-Xi. The Odyssey either has a line impedance mismatch or there is excessive capacitance in the audio output of it's preamp circuit. With that scope you could troubleshoot that easily. Need scope probes though.

Thanks for another great review: good to see the build quality of the instrument in close-up, and to get a clear impression of the filter types in particular. I'm starting to get a little bit of monosynth fatigue though: all of these new instruments do pretty much the same thing, and do the analogue synth thing in different ways, but nothing we haven't heard before. Looking forward to the next wave of instruments, which will hopefully add something new. I guess that's what DSI have been attempting with their products, but I'm still waiting for new instruments that are built to last 30 years.
Compared to a MS-20, I'd pay $200 more for an Odyssey any day! The ARP is much more flexible and has a better sound (although the jack field on the MS-20 and the resonant HPF evens things up feature wise, but not sonic wise).
I hear some Ultravox/John Foxx type sounds in those sync sounds.

The original was the one used in the center solo of Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" (1978), programmed and played by "The Other Joe" Vitale himself... I'll bet Vitale might still have the original, AND this newer version!

Interesting your comment on the sound variations from the Arp and the Korg and also your reference to same units sounding different . My point being that back in the 80's I bought an Octave kitten from Chase in london and on a repair they had a robery and my unit was one that was stolen, So as they were a good bunch of guys 'sikhs if i remember correctly, they replaced my unit BUT it did sound different in quite an obvious way to me. So there not single sound out there. anyway... Have fun .

Benedict Johnson yeah I wanted a clean synth-> Scope input without introducing any other processing into the chain. Regarding the difference in wave width, as I couldnt hear it, the pitches are slightly different which is why.

The Korg Odessei iOS version is tremendous as well with the added feature that it has a poly mode. It's tragic that korg abandoned it without making it auv3.

I was excited at first. I thought Korg had finally changed the keys to full size. No such luck, still have to wait for the MK II version.
The keys are fine.
Considering it's made in China and the circuit boards are surface mount by machine (no labor) It could of been cheaper.
Not everyone plays live, So the case should of been optional. What i didn't like about Korg, MS-20 mini then released a full size kit for almost twice the price, Does the extra VCF chip and a bit more plastic really cost that much. Are they going to do something similar with the Odyssey, Full-size with drive amount control on the back. Some might hold back and wait for the full-size.

If you think the waves on the scope looked "the same" then you need to get your eyes checked. The top ones were clearly wider. Not saying this means much but it needs to be said.

i tried this in my local music shop and trust me this thing is a fucking beast what a sound XD !!! i love push the limit of the filter and make real analog drum sound or bass line with the drive, now i wan't it so much ^^ the only thing that was backward is the fact there is no patch memory system, but who cares it's a real analog machine ^^

Hi Will, yeah it was the revision 2 limited edition. I purchased it from Kraft Music. I personally don't mind the revision 2 paint job and it was totally worth saving 200.00.
Absolutely right it was Monty! Personally, if there's ever been a better looking synth than the off white face Odyssey, then I don't think I've ever seen it.

Very different sound characters. MS is more agressive, Ody is sweeter.
Javi G Ody can also get pretty aggressive. I'd say the Ody is more verstaile/well rounded
