I must say this is my dream come true to FINALLY be able to get this ICONIC hardware synth that was introduced in 1971! You said it well, what a time to be alive! My life is complete now!
Excellent rundown. Thanks! Zawinul did indeed play stuff (including the main them of "Black Market") via an inverted keyboard voltage on a 2600. A truly creative genius. You can find videos online of him doing it. If you play keyboards a lot yourself, it's mindblowing to watch.
If anyone wants to know what the Behringer models add to this. Built in LFO, vibrato and portamento controls from the 3620 keyboard. VCO1 - LFO hardwired to FM in place of VCO2. Vco2 and 3 have switchable sync. VCO3 has triangle and sine outputs, same as VCO2. VCO3 has PWM input. Filter tracking via keyboard CV has dedicated slider, not just on or off. Envelopes have 3 different time factors to make them much longer. ADSR has dedicated gate in. Regardless of the sound I’d feel the Korg is a step backwards in a number of ways.
Got to say we particularly enjoyed being able to just sit down and explore sounds without plugging anything else in! Which is just as well because sound design on the 2600 is pretty addictive...
The lights are kind of helpful if you’re using it for live settings with a dark stage, but there were mod kits for the original 2600 that did the same thing, so I imagine they’ll soon be out there for the new full size and M KARP models as well.
If anyone's still reading: Would I be able to input an external oscillator via the amplifier (just one long / endless note, no control over pitch) and pitch that note inside the 2600, the pitch being controlled via keyboard = gate / cv or midi in? My use case is that I have a Rumble of Ancient Times, which has no midi in, but creates extremely complex and interesting waveshapes (you can tune them on the RoAT, but just with an encoder, not via midi in or so). Would be cool to make it playable on keyboard with help of the 2600...
Thanks Haraldur. He was exceptionally excited to show this one off, to say the least(!) We have an ARP2600m jam video with Mr Melodies coming up shortly so do subscribe if you can, thanks again!
Your knowledge of the 2600 is thorough - and that's no small feat. Even as a 2600 (Antonus) owner I picked up tips. (31:45 what it's doing to the tom or snare here is special)
Thank you! The patch book mentioned (link in description!) definitely made us realise there are so many clever tricks to discover, eg. using the Ring Mod as a pseudo-VCA, also using the electronic switch at audio rates with multiple oscillator shapes going into it to flip between them and make more complex shapes! Here's to another 50 years?
@@rexaguilar2353 I have the Behringer Gray model. It sounds great. But this Korg one just sounds closer...I'm struggling, that's why I asked the question, not to spark a debate about Behringer
@@thomasgeiger6336 I think there's something in the spring reverb, sounds closer to the original on the Korg but you really need to watch a good side by side video
As Do'be says, yes! It magically powers AND receives MIDI through USB, and should work with most class-compliant MIDI keyboards with just one cable. Also, a super nice touch, is that the KeyStep 37 fits (very snugly, but still fits) inside the included carry case.
Yes it is! In fact the Gate input for the envelopes has been tweaked on the 2600m so that it'll trigger with +5V (much more common in Euro) rather than +10V on the ARP2600FS (and original!), and it uses standard 3.5mm minijack sockets rather than tini-jax on the vintage originals.
The beauty of CV is it's a (fairly) universal language, so that two pieces of CV compatible gear will complement one another, in both directions! You could absolutely treat the 2600 as an expander, a little bit like the MS-50 was an expander for the MS-20. Speaking of which, the only things to be aware of are differences in voltage level (some inputs may expect more voltage that a particular source might be able to supply. But to the best of our knowledge a Moog Matriarch & 2600 would be very compatible), and that there are a few voltage scaling standards - 1v/Oct which Moog and ARP both use (so they're fine with each other!) but also Hz/V which Korg MS-20's use, and Buchla uses 1.2v/Oct.
I want one of these. Had an opportunity to buy one with a busted keybed for $1500 a few years ago and passed. I regret doing that. Yeah, the LFO is on the keyboard but I think it could have been fixed. I messed up. I am referring to an original 1971 unit.
Oh wow, that would have been a fantastic deal even with repairs to complete. One supposes you couldn't have known if there were other surprises down the line as all vintage units need some TLC sooner or later! On the plus side...now you have a 'BNIB Factory Sealed Unit' option, albeit a little bit smaller!
None more Arpy. It's funny how you suddenly come across familiar sounds in it, and realise it's because you've heard them across recorded music for five decades! Not least every Todd Terje record, and that's a good thing too.
We were doing some research on the Fairlight recently and were blown away to discover that it only had 16kB(!) of sample memory. Per voice, but it's still quite incredible to think what was achieved with that.
@@Gear4musicSynthsTech Some great hits came out of the Fairlight so I guess sometimes 16kb is enough! Also I love the sound/tone of it. The band Yello got some great sounds out of it even though it's a lowly 8-bit sampler.
Thanks so much Jon! We understand that the first units have begun to ship, but in very limited quantities and realistically it'll be well into 2022 before we would expect to have free stock. Sorry about that, it's a bit tricky to predict but please give us a shout or visit the link in the description if you wanted to place a pre-order.
Mr Mylar, so glad to see you review this synth. No one does it best.
Great video as usual Mylar Melodies ,your intellectual curiosity for electronic instruments is contagious .
Thank you for checking this out Fabian!
Lovely presentation, Alex.
Excellent video Alex. The stereo panning bit hadn’t occurred to me. Brilliant! 👍

What a great video, multiple camera angles, perfect demo
Thanks for that great demo, Mylar is the best
Absolutly excellent. Brilliant!
What a gem. Glad the algorithm gods sent me here.
We are actually friends, and I think you are on my server called The Elastic Retreat
Love your demos.
Never has one man bopped his head so much for so little for so long for no reason! (Commas omitted for dramatic effect.)

The B2600 also does away with the useless speakers. Why Korg insists on keeping them I have no idea. Waste of space if you ask me.

Nice presentation!
This thing looks so beautiful and classy. So much better than the garish Behringer clone that thinks its a Christmas tree.

So fantastic!
Can you run any external audio through the filters and reverb? If so that makes this so much more valuable to me
Yes indeed, from microphone to line level and guitar, it's an effects processor/filterbank as much as a synth!

Sounds way better than the Behringer, or are my ears deceiving me?
Yeah bro... it’s cause it’s more expensive 😂

I thought the behringer didn’t really sound like a 2600 much. Maybe a slight resemblance
Will it power and take MIDI from the keystep's USB output?
Yeah he says it does around the 19:30 mark

Was definitely mentioned in the video. ;)

There must be a reason the korg one is much more expensive or am i wrong?
or has it some other advantages the behringer has not?

Where did you get the ArpTuria controller? Need that!
We stuck the sticker from the ARP2600m package on a Keystep 37! You get an amazing pack of stickers with the synth.
to me its a shame, i have the vst, i can do som basic stuff, but still dont get it, specially in the sequencer (I use the arturia one)

Any of the various Behringer clones are more versatile and affordable.
The Behringer 2600 is a better deal, and much less expensive.
yes but does it sound the same as arp?
Naaah...too overpriced. Stick to Behringer 2600.
It doesnt sound that good
