Continuous lava lakes are a rare phenomenon and there are only 7 volcanoes on earth that have them. I believe Masaya is the newest one to form a lava lake. I'm guessing the crust of the earth must have developed a new fracture and it's allowing the mantle to rapidly melt and send magma to the surface.
