This is hands down the best video from this volcano ever made! In a matter of 10 minutes it completely drained itself and filled back up! And you captured it! Well done!
The same thing happened at Halemau'u in 2018. The lava lake and Pu'u O'o both drained completely...and the lava erupted down the lower East rift zone, engulfing Leilani Estates.
I thought the same thing. I would love to see an animation of the land masses on a globe instead of the Mercator projection. Then we could really see how it happens.
this is amazing. I wonder if its not unlike a sinkhole. ground sinks and drains like this (especially in Florida where the lower ground is more limestone than bedrock) if there is a cavern that opens up or water seeps into an area or flows it out creates a cavity and the weight of the ground above it forces it to collapse. what if something similar is happening here? but with magma/lava instead of earth and water?
I wonder if a large pocket of gas is getting trapped between the two. Once the pressure from the lava lake becomes high enough is disrupts the pocket of gas and the lake drains. Once drained it allows the gas pocket to slow and eventually halt the lava, beginning the process again. I would love to be able to ride the lava current so I could see what's happening in there.

I can watch this all day..Amazing how our Earth recreates its self. How hot is this lava, is it really coming from the core of the Earth.

So what causes this? Where does the lava go and why does lava return to refill the lake?

we do not know exactly. but it seems to have connection to the pit north crater. and more south new lava flow appears in January
