There are only a handful of places in the world where an ordinary tourist is able to stare into the churning lave lake of an active volcano. Masaya Volcano, outside of Granada and Managua in Nicaragua is one such place. In the 16th Century the Spanish Colonialists called this volcano "La Boca del Infierno" which means "The Mouth of Hell".
With its last major eruption occurring in 1772, the Masaya Volcano is one of the most active in the world.
It's hard to explain in words what it is like staring into an active volcano. It's also impossible to provide a sense of scale. The caldera is around 400m (1000ft +) deep, with a lava lake at the bottom churning up molten lava and spewing volcanic gases.
Masaya Volcano and the other caldera craters that surround it was one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen - up there with the Northern Lights. It is colossal, and we had one of the best sunsets we'd seen in Central America.
This place is a must visit. If you're travelling in Nicaragua or in Managua/Granada you absolutely have to pay the $10 Masaya Volcano National Park entrance and visit Masaya Volcano. I'd recommend going before sunset so that you can see the crater in daylight - you may also spot the scientists and geologists that monitor the volcano. You can then watch the sunset from near the Nidiri Crater and head back to the lava lake when it's dark.
Masaya Volcano is not one to be missed!

Standing on top of Masaya is incredible. One of my favorite experiences
Anations99 - absolutely. As I said, I really do put it up there with the Northern Lights as a 'must see'.
awesome ... thanks ... one of the six lava lakes of the world!
@metarus208 - is it really? Is that 6 that you can go and see? Still the best place I've ever been
@@WiththeSparrows yes, though the one in Antarctica is not technically visitable ... the other ones are in Hawaii Big Island, Ert Ale Ethiopia, Niyarigongo in DR Congo and in Vanuatu
Nice SOS beuatiful Nicaragua
Wow, amazing! I really don't have words to describe this place... it's even magical!!
@Henry Steppel I believe it's one of only 8 places in the world where you can (as a non-scientist!) see a lava lake in a volcano. Pretty amazing.
I was there yesterday at sunset and it's one of the most incredible natural wonders I've ever seen.
@Cynthia Forcade - a couple of years later and it's still one of the best things I've ever seen. Glad you liked it!
Absolutely superb - volcanoes always fascinate me. And that sunset was gorgeous.
@Gaz of-the-North - yep they ironically feel a bit other worldly! Couldn't say a bad word about the whole experience.
I've been there, in 2016 the lava was raised up and it was louder, it so amazing that I took my husband back at the beginning of 2020, so that he can experience the volcano at night. That along was worth the trip to Nicaragua. Greetings from the great state of Virginia USA.
@Crowne Plaza I did hear that the lava lake was much higher a few years ago, would have loved to have seen that! I agree as well, it was well worth the trip.
NICARAGUA the best country in central anerica 🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮
@andres Federico Ruiz chabarria - it certainly has a lot to offer! I haven't travelled to all of the countries in Central America so probably can't say if it's the best or not. Definitely enjoyed my time there though.
@@WiththeSparrows for me the best
@@andresmarioruizchavarria8980 fair enough, I'll take your word for it.
Love this video. I put Masaya volcano on my bucket list after watching it. I was close to it but chose Arenal. Don’t regret it but next time I visit Costa Rica will go across the border. Thanks so much
@Grzegorz D. I really don't think you'd be disappointed. I feel like Masaya volcano's number one fanboy - but I'll stick the fact that it was the best thing I did in Central America.
Great video. I will be visiting Managua soon.
@J I'm jealous. Would love to go back! Definitely check out the volcano and laguna de apoyo
Only can say wow.
@Ricardo Vasquez it was incredible. One of the best things I've done!
@@WiththeSparrows can tell, after sunset amazing.
Amazing! Nature is breathtaking sometimes.
@JD Jones an apt description. Up there with the Northern Lights in my opinion..
Beautiful land mass.
@Linda Downing - indeed it is. The scale is hard to get your head around
“I was just about to say epic, but, I hate that word.” Dude, you need to be a professional host. 😂
@Ian Hollingsworth - haha I don't know about that. A grumpy brit doesn't really cut it.
auf jeden Fall wunderbar🌋
@León Sánchez genau

@John Ensor already bought it 😃
