Honestly what impresses me most about Ari is his comprehension skills. Even on the vids that he only studies a language for 1-2 weeks (and clearly struggles speaking it) he still manages to understand what others are saying for the most part.
I think that comes with knowing so many languages. A lot of them evolved off of each other, probably to the point where if you know enough other languages and you know the structure/grammar of that specific language, you can figure it out. I only know basic Spanish as a second language, but I know several coding languages and that learning process feels similar to when I was learning Spanish. And of course, it depends on how similar one language is to the stuff you already know.
@@OGDweeb Yes! I think I was hit on the part of my head that lets me *speak* other languages. When I was younger, they kept trying to bump me up in my foreign language classes because they thought I secretly spoke the languages or something, because I understood things very quickly. Then I would get to the higher level class and the teacher would be mad I couldn’t speak the language and send me back! 😅
A lot of times understanding is also context based. If you can understand 70-80% of the sentence because thats what you're familiar with, you can kinda still make out what the person means depending on the context of the conversation and the situation you find yourself in. Its still is hit or miss but its a skill you improve over time the more unfamiliar conversations you go ahead with. Ari ofcourse has mastered this and 90% of his conversations are kind of obvious, like why did you learn this language, how long?, some compliments, greetings, common phrases and so on.
I studied mandarin till hsk3 but still found myself fumbling to hold an actual conversation. After I began to watch Laoshu and Xiaoma, I understood these commonalities and now able to hold a 5 min flawless conversation in a native accent. But beyond that i'm still blank haha. But it definitely helped me overcome a plateau, and break the ice with many native speakers that now I can call as friends :)
In all my years of watching this man, not one encounter has thought of him as racist whether he's buying food, clothes, or whatever. The encounters don't think of it as cultural appropriation. They get excited, look in wonder, and are full of appreciation that someone from a different culture took the time to learn theirs.
The moment we consider learning a foreign language and getting to know each other's wats as cultural appropriation, the doors between our cultures close, and, honestly, given the existence of nuclear weapos, the end of our species is only a step or two away. Each culture and each language is a completely different paradigm of reality, with ways of thinking that can be completely alien. It is paramount to the longevity of our species that we learn how to appreciate and understand one another.
@DC3328 Not necessarily learning another language, but when he buys cultural clothes for his wife, they are proud and appreciative. Walk around most high school/college or university campuses (or any street for that matter) in a different ethnic attire, and you will get barraged by negativity.
@toooldforcitylife Honestly, as someone who likes learning about other cultures, it always really annoys me when people complain about "cultural appropriation". If people want to wear cultural clothing for fashion (even if they don't know much about the culture), I literally see nothing wrong with that. Complaining about stuff like that is literally killing multiculturalism.

I would love a comprehensive study on xao to see how well his brain is "scored" on memory retention... Truly incredible. Even if he does take 15 or more days, having the ability to memorize fluent languages in pretty much any language is truly unhuman. Maybe xao is not from earth, but put here to help spread some positive influences on our messed up society now
There is a video on his channel where he gets his brain scanned and does IQ tests and stuff, pretty sure memory retention is something that they talk about but I could be misremembering.
@@brynna77 Perhaps not, but he knows a lot more than most would learn in 15 days; he's at least somewhat conversational in many of these languages if not fluent. I've watched your videos for years Xiaoma. I'm learning German currently because I plan to move to move to my girlfriend in Germany. I struggle and have weird bouts of nervousness when trying to TALK it out loud. I can say so much alone but as soon as I try to talk to someone I crash lmao. From your videos, I can really see that even though you struggle a bit because you don't fully know the language, you have a level of confidence when speaking them. The willingness to learn, knowing you're gonna be making mistakes, and knowing you're not gonna know some things, I think for me I just need that layer of confidence, cause that seems to be the big key to learning to speak and hear people speaking the language. It's always fun to watch your videos and seeing all the different reactions from people has always been a treat.
I love your videos. My uncle had a gift like yours, he spoke i'm not sure how many different languages but specialized in Spanish and spoke over 20 dialects, ending up teaching at the University of Panama in Balboa. He used to play games with me when he'd come to visit where we'd pick a language to explore and I'd do laps on my bike. Each time i passed the patio he'd call out a new word in the language of the day, and give me a phrase. When I came back around I'd give him the word and my best attempt at figuring out what it meant, then he'd give me a new word and phrase and we'd go all day. I ended up studying Spanish, French, German, and Russian because of him. Keep up the great work!
I absolutely love the moments where he is talking to someone expecting them to speak one language, and they come out with another, and he smoothly switches to speaking the other language so effortlessly and you can tell he loves it when he gets to switch it up! (Like the gentleman who spoke Spanish)
The quote from the last guy is actually what i had in mind the whole time, and what i usually see in your other videos. As an other one said before, people just open op. Great vid !

My mind is blown every time I watch these videos. I just absolutely love them all. Thank you thank you so much for doing what you do. If I were to ask you to learn European Portuguese, how exactly (which websites books etc) would you go about it? Because I would love to learn it and would really appreciate your specific advice/guidance how to go about it.
This man has to be a literal genius. 15 days and he's already able to have a conversation? I learned Spanish for 4 years and I can hardly ask basic questions.
All comes down to interest at the end of the day, he studied more during every single one of those 15 days than you likely did in any day of those 4 years. Just because he enjoys learning languages that much.
The human instinct to learn is incredible man. Some are born with that drive to keep going and going in their interests like fishing, mechanics, engineers, artists, language speakers, etc... while others just lose the pull or desire to achieve those goals. The only reason you didn't learn jack squat from spanish in 4 years is because you just didn't care about it. But I bet whatever you did care about you did well in.
Awesome as usual Ari. ❤ Do you think you will ever try to learn a Sámi language? It's a bunch of rapidly declining languages of people in the Northern most parts of Sweden, Norway & Finland. About 20K expected speakers in total, but some Sami languages only have 20 speakers left at all, like Ume Sami, Pite Sami or the super rare Ter Sami with 2 Totsl Speakers left! They are very unique languages with of language variations which are all apart of the Finni-Ugric Languages. Their history is very interesting, and many different cultural quirks.
Arieh, let’s just be honest here. You are a language genius. Like, it’s not normal. lol You are truly gifted! 🥰 It never gets old watching these videos. Don’t ever stop! ☺️ ❤
Not really more than half the world's languages are banned , to repress ethnic groups. Britain banned Irish,Welsh and Scottish for over 400 years. Ussr banned all native languages, and even today Russia bans most languages such as Tatar. China is clamping down on non mandarin language.. American clamped down on indigenous langues until the 70s
I could tell it was OSFNA just by the thumbnail. If you came during the opening festival I could’ve seen you man. Btw Oromo hasn’t been “banned” in Ethiopia since 1974. And even before that it wasn’t really banned in actuality because it was spoken in the rural parts of Oromia where the vast majority of Oromo people lived. Oromo was banned for use in official situations like a court case or anything involved with the feudal system at the time.
Yes you are correct. It was banned officially in court, published music and writings, and education system during Selassie. But people in countryside can speak it. Or privately in the home. But there were consequences for trying to publicly distribute any material or media in it or trying to teach it.
love the last part of the saying when he said to Ari "you speak to a man to his mother tongue it goes to his heart".. you truly are an inspiration man.. kudos Xiaoman
I resonated with the "it's a way to unlock people" although for me it's about the emotional bridging, not the free stuff... but I think the feeling is shared

I always say that the languages most worth learning are the ones that the speakers don't expect you to speak. I'm a Canadian of western Scottish ancestry (and look it), and when Irish people hear Irish come out of my mouth, they're shocked and thrilled, but Yiddish-speakers are fascinated. I haven't branched out into non-European languages (I speak some Hebrew, and have studied a little Swahili and Zulu on Duolingo, but I'm shy to practise them, and Haitian Creole is pretty easy because I speak French, but again, shy). I'm always impressed at how willing Arieh is to just put himself out there.
It gets easier the more you do it! Just remember that you'll make mistakes and it's totally fine. Notice how Ari makes tons of mistakes, but his efforts are appreciated and they're happy to help him learn. You're doing amazing already, keep it up! :)

It is a ceremony where people come together, pray, thank God, and share the coffee together. The pottery called Jabanaa that holds the buna also has a spiritual purpose in the Waaqeffanna faith.
This was great! SO many people recognized you while not even in New York. The crowd that formed was so hear-warming.
At a time when it feels like our society is falling apart, you give us hope and you bring people together. Thank you, Ari.
This language sounds beautiful. I love that the guy's that came up to him were so excited. Yet they also spoke several languages.❤
The last gentlemans comment about speaking someones mother tongue touching their heart is so obviously true and Ari has shown us that time and time again. It's fascinating and heartwarming to watch.
I always have a wide grin watching Xiaomanyc videos from start to finish. Very inspiring.
He definitely is not fluent in most of these languages
@@brynna77 Perhaps not, but he knows a lot more than most would learn in 15 days; he's at least somewhat conversational in many of these languages if not fluent. For this particularly language he was hampered by the lack of educational material. That said, his facility with language is enough to be considered a savant capability. It's extremely rare, but not unique. Daniel Tammet, a famous savant, also has the ability to rapidly acquire languages. He once tested it for a television program by learning Icelandic in just one week.
@@calliarcaleyou have no idea what you’re talking about. These people have these abilities BECAUSE they have studied languages so much, not because they have innate talent or savant capabilities
@@0x2A_it wasn’t memory retention. He’s just capable of sitting through tedious, boring shit for extended periods. More than the average person. Which means that his “savant” abilities with language are nothing more than a lot of time and effort
This is the wholesome content the world needs. Thanks for doing all of this. Language really is so beautiful.
Your friend has the most wholesome laugh! You bring out the best in people Ari 🤗 ❤
Your videos are so much fun to watch. Seeing the reactions of people when you surprise them by speaking their native languages is wonderful!

you are spreading happiness and raising awareness in a very lovely way. i really appreciate it. as a turkish person, i hope one day i can see you talking with my people. at least with the ones who lives in states. i promise, when you see the sparkles in their eyes which comes with shock will make you feel good. you are a good man. keep it up, wish you well🫡
Being able to talk to so many people in many different languages - what an amazing skill. I'm always blown away by you, Ari. 🙏👏😁

another amazing video but i just have one question have you ever thought about learning hawaiian, i've been watching you and a lot of different polyglots for a long time but none of them have spoke hawaiian in a video, as a native hawaiian it would be so sick to see especially since the hawaiian language is slowly becoming a dying language with under 15,000 people being able to understand it and speak it fluently. Im still trying to learn it fully myself and im no where near fluent
@dacholo3202 they do but once out of high school like any other language you lose em a lil to the point where your not fluent no more by most standards
I’d like to see that, i believe they have Hawaiian on duolingo, not sure how good it is
He is SO HAPPY!!! All smiles! I know my daughter is learning Portuguese for her work, and last visit her co worker said "Be careful! She might sound like a child, but she understands everything you are saying!"
I smile during all of his videos. Seeing the joy in people speaking in their native language is so amazing
I love that learning how to talk another language brings people together.
So much kindness makes every day easier.
The joy in your friends laughter and smile and soul at you knowing and learning his language is deeply heartfelt and touching, absolutely priceless. Moved me to tears.
Your interactions are always so wholesome. I love it!
You are such a sweet kind Person.❤
I love how absolutely tickled they are to hear him speaking the language.
I love what that dude said at the end because Ari's vids absolutely prove that if you speak to a non native English speaker in their native tongue it goes to their heart. I love seeing people's faces brighten up when he starts talking to them. And I always love when they ask him if he's from where they are almost eveytime.

This is so sweet 🥹
I ran out of superlatives to describe this man. I'll just say that when I watch I constantly have a smile.
This is my favourite video so far, it touched me on many levels. You're a good man, man. 🇨🇦
I loved that last part "you speak to a man language he knows it goes to the head, you speak to man with his mother language it goes to the heart" that is so true, totally love that and I never heard that saying before. Amazing video like always, totally love all the content here, so wholesome and good vibes all around. Keep up the good vibes! Wishing you all the best from Finland! Maybe you do my mother tongue someday :D
You're so inspiring man .. I really would love to learn more languages you make it seem so easy
just loved it ...if u are depressed or sad pls watch this just feel good
Their giggles are infectious 😃
Great stuff Xiaoma. Wishing you all the best. Amazing content.
Dude this was pretty dang sweet. Great job. 🍻 salud
The quote from the last guy is actually what i had in mind the whole time, and what i usually see in your other videos. As an other one said before, people just open op. Great vid !
You're doing so well in carrying Laoshu's crown as the language god!!! RIP to him, but its so dope to see you expand into all these super niche languages and teaching us about these new culutes we never knew about

This is so thrilling to watch. You get to see genuine raw happy surprise in them. I so wish I had even a fraction of this skill
It has nothing to do with intellect or innate talent lol
The human instinct to learn is incredible man. Some are born with that drive to keep going and going in their interests like fishing, mechanics, engineers, artists, language speakers, etc... while others just lose the pull or desire to achieve those goals. The only reason you didn't learn jack squat from spanish in 4 years is because you just didn't care about it. But I bet whatever you did care about you did well in.
Learning languages helps you learn more languages.
You make the world smile my brother
Awesome as usual Ari. ❤
Do you think you will ever try to learn a Sámi language? It's a bunch of rapidly declining languages of people in the Northern most parts of Sweden, Norway & Finland.
About 20K expected speakers in total, but some Sami languages only have 20 speakers left at all, like Ume Sami, Pite Sami or the super rare Ter Sami with 2 Totsl Speakers left!
They are very unique languages with of language variations which are all apart of the Finni-Ugric Languages. Their history is very interesting, and many different cultural quirks.
Aww he looks so happy!!

The fact he laughed the entire walk as non-stop. 😂
Much ❤️ and respect from Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Although It was banned previously, currently over 50+ million people speak Oromiffa.
Banning a language. The world is nuts.
Another great video. There's good vibes that I sensed whenever you spoke Oromo to Qomoo and the others.
It’s not banned. 40 million Oromos speak this language
@@hawimela22 Yes that’s the point I was trying to make
Yes you are correct. It was banned officially in court, published music and writings, and education system during Selassie.
But people in countryside can speak it. Or privately in the home. But there were consequences for trying to publicly distribute any material or media in it or trying to teach it.
Xioma is truly an inspiration to keep exploring and learning languages. Keep it up bro

This is one of my favorite ones so far. Always impressive and everyone was SO excited to talk or even try other languages.
Haven't watched yet but already know it's gonna be a banger
