I hung out with Somalis in Minnesota on Somali Independence Day and it was a blast! They were very excited when I spoke Somali and showed off what I knew about Somali culture. We also tried many Somali foods and drinks like sambuus, canjeero, Vimto, and more! So I took it upon myself to learn. The interp and parents were so welcoming and patient w me while i was learning! Anyway, My name is Lindsay , one day The parents and interpreters said i need a muslim name. They named my Khadijo. 🥰 today, when i speak the language, i get the same happy reaction as Xiaomanyc gets. 🥰🥰🥰

If I had one superpower, it would be to speak and understand all languages. I would take FULL ADVANTAGE of that! Love your videos, Xiaoma! As I was reminded by a Nigerian coworker, speaking English/Spanish/German is not a real huge accomplishment. I'm inclined to agree with his perception. Speaking, oh, let's say, Chinese/Ukranian/Somali....is a HUGE accomplishment. I'm all for teaching LATIN in grade school before they start advanced English. It would give us a needed step up on communication, and induce people to explore at LEAST the easier related languages. German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc.

I have been lucky enough to travel to many countries in my life and always tried the very basics in local language to get by. My efforts have been appreciated to almost ridiculed during the years. Honestly, I would have loved nothing more than to be fluent in the language of the countries I have visited. You really get so much more out of the local people when you can converse with them.

    • @Nano0k

Similarly to yourself, I can be polite in a dozen or so, can get by in a few more, but am fluent in only English. Regardless, in my travels even the merest of efforts and a friendly attitude have opened countless doors, including offers to eat or stay at locals’ homes.

I think one of the craziest parts of all of this is that whoever Ari speaks with, they can almost always speak English. Obviously, it's amazing how many languages Ari can speak and how quickly he learns them. But it's incredible to me how many people around the world are so good at English in their native countries.

As an English speaker, I am grateful that our language is kinda the defacto international language, however, I do get a little jealous of the people in these videos who get to have such a surreal moment when someone who doesn't look like them can speak their language. There is no person I would look at then be surprised by the fact that they can speak my language.
