Kate was asked to write a song for the scene in the movie She's Having A Baby where the husband, played by Kevin Bacon, is reminiscing about all of the good times he and his wife, played by Elizabeth McGovern, in the hospital waiting room and he's feeling regret and fear after he learned that his wife is about to go through a breached birth which could pose a threat to the wife's life and even the baby. Kate wrote this song from the husband's point of view. Elizabeth McGovern's character and their baby both turn out OK. Kate's character survives at the end of the music video because of the nurse's smile to let the husband know his wife is OK. This is my favorite Kate Bush song. It has gotten me through tough times emotionally and gave me the encouragement and strength to carry on. So I give her a lot of gratitude for writing, producing and performing this touching and beautiful song.
You mentioned Peter Gabriel as one of your favorite artists, so you owe yourself a listen to a song performed by him and Kate titled Don't Give Up. It is a thing of beauty!
As a life-long fan since I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in 1978, the only thing you can expect from Kate is the unexpected. Everything she does is unique, innovative, enigmatic, and magical. She is a one of a kind musical genius and certainly one of the greatest female artists of all time. She has never been in it for the fame or riches, it's all about the artistry and music for her. And what a wonderful human being. Everybody loves Kate, she's one of the most humble, sweet, gracious, kind, witty, and lovely persons you could ever meet.
@@joannepinnow6929 That's hard to argue with. Probably only by fans of different genres, but with Kate, genre is no barrier. She's done it all. Something for everybody.
It was written for a small but incredible part where the husband finally recognized his regrets, embarrassment, helplessness as his wife’s labor goes wrong and it’s serious- he’s sent back to the waiting room alone to contemplate how in awe he is of her but how he becomes a man faced with potential loss. It has a happy ending- she captured the roller coaster during birth.
Hello. Here in Portugal , this song was not very well known... But, for me , this is one of the best songs from her ... I really , really love this song...
this is one of my all time favourite songs. always gives me goosebumps and a lump in my throat (if not tears). i love the emotional roller-coaster of it.
I adore Kate Bush and this song is another wonderful song. It brings me to tears but perhaps not in the way others would because of personal reasons, but that's what is great about music.
This will blow your mind, the song is an expectant mother talking to her unborn baby, who's fighting to survive! ...kate Bush, writes her own music, lyrics and is the key player in her video production, plays piano on many tracks and is a professionally trained ballet dancer!
Great reaction 🔥 Kate Bush is "The Queen of Art Pop," one of the world's greatest and brilliant singer-songwriter(s), producer(s), and performer(s) of all-time. "This Woman's Work" (1989) is about the uncertainty of childbirth through the eyes of the man. The R & B artist Maxwell famously covered it in the late-1990s. Sidenote: Although the ending to the music video was ambiguous, Kate's character and the baby survived. Top 3 Kate Bush Songs: 1) Under the Ivy: The B-Side to "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)" (1985). Simply haunting and beautiful, my personal #1 Kate Bush song. 2) The Ninth Wave: The second half of Kate's album "The Hounds of Love" (1985). It is a seven song concept that tells a story of a woman washed out to sea and struggling to stay alive until rescue. This may be Kate's magnum opus. 3) "Moments of Pleasure" (1993): Kate's heartfelt tribute to all the friends and family that have passed but are kept alive through memories. Here is one of Kate's tracks that I suggest you should do next. The first ever Kate Bush song/music video that I listened to/saw was "Cloudbusting" (1985). It was on a DVD of 80s music videos. I was 10 and I had no clue what the hell the song was about but I was mesmerized by the moving, visual presentation. The video depicts the loving relationship between a boy (played by Kate Bush) and his scientist father (played by Donald Sutherland). They shoot a ray gun invention at clouds so it would rain (a.k.a. cloudbusting). The government soon arrests the scientist for his meddling with the laws of nature and proceeds to destroy his life's work. The scientist leaves it up to his son to complete the project they started together. Kate based the song off the 1973 book "A Book of Dreams" by Peter Reich, about his love for his father, a famous and controversial psychoanalyst, Wilhelm Reich, who's pioneering works was considered blasphemous in 1950s America. Reich's works were then burned and was subsequently put in jail where he died shortly after. Definitely a Kate Bush Music Video to react to
Fabulous analysis. This song was written and used for the John Hughes movie “She’s Having a Baby” and in the movie there is a happy ending. In the video I feel I think she left it more ambiguous. I’m sure there’s a clip from the movie floating around you tube somewhere if you want to check it out. Also you’ll probably hear about the Maxwell version of the song. Definitely a different song when sung by a man. My favorites are Cloudbusting and The Man With The Child In His Eyes
Kate is absolutely one of the greatest female vocalists/composers/producers on all time. There are so many wonderful songs I'd love to see you react to...and you're right when you say that Kate and Tori Amos share DNA. Tori is a huge Kate fan, and it shows. Since you asked, my three favorite Kate Bush songs are: "Oh England My Lionheart," "Hello Earth," and "Moments of Pleasure".
Nice reaction. The song didn’t resolve because the film scene it was written for had not resolved at the time the song ended. But it was a happy ending in the film with both mother and new born baby surviving. And it was also a happy ending in the music video as indicated by the nurse’s good news smile. Kate directed that video.
Thanks for this reaction. I don't know much about Kate's discography, but I always wanted to hear this song by her because the artist known as Maxwell did a beautiful and stunning cover of it (studio or official video), and he never performs this song live without first acknowledging her genius gifts. Also love the point that you made about America and its happy ending addiction. Food for thought.
Kate Bush is by far my favorite female artist but her masterpiece is on the album hounds of love the backside the 25 or so minutes of genius called the ninth wave..
If you look closely at the ending scene, the nurse has a smile on her face as if she is delivering good news. Of course the husband has been clobbering himself for hours about all the things he should have said and did. When he gets the news that his wife is out of the woods, he's non-plussed. He hasn't prepared for that and so you see him go nearly limp. It's a very realistic portrayal by the actor of how emotionally torn he is without speaking a single line.
it is indeed a fascinating masterpiece: musically, it has an emotional ebb & flow, the orchestral backing always chokes me up, yet, like your comparisons to things being “unfinished”, the song literally ends on a last hanging note before a completion chord note.. it leaves you w/a wanting for a “proper ending” (depending on your background/upbringing on this planet).. as for the video: Kate Bush is the director! aside from from post-editing, she “choreographed” the video so that it could be filmed in a “long shot” (of sorts) relying on the use of lighting & rightward movement: a continuous scene where she taps him into the past/present moment having dinner when she suddenly collapses backwards, he carries her to the car, a desperate race to the hospital, & his wife being wheeled away on a stretcher into the hospital ER as he races in behind her.. lyrically, you even read the shift from her (woman’s) work to switch the pronouns in the last verse suggesting the father now must take on “the work” w/“not a lot of time in ya yet”(paraphrasing).. it’s such an ingenious video/song for 1989.. & i agree, as a gay man, i feel a “relative” balance between emotions & suppression are fascinating for me when observing (listening/talking with) other humans.. thank you for another fantastic reaction/review! you asked of another song: of the same “The Sensual World” album, 1 of my next favorite songs of her is “A Deeper Understanding” which fascinatingly is way ahead of its time when using slow modems to communicate/etc w/others before there was an internet becomes an addiction by simply “pressing EXECUTE”! (make sure to listen to the original 1989 version)
Powerful song! One can also visually experience the power through some choreography with this song. Examples: search "so you think you can dance choreography" with song title. There are some powerful visuals. Kate Bush was also an classically trained dancer. Great Talent.
Thanks, once again, for reacting to my choice. In actual fact both mother and baby survive in She's Having A Baby, so I have always taken the end of the video to be a happy one, where the nurse tells the husband everything is OK. However, we Brits like ambiguity way more than Americans do (don't know about Canadians... please tell me where you stand on this), hence the deliberately open ending. As you have established, both the video and the song form a package as Kate weaves her spell. A good choice next would be Cloudbusting, which has an uplifting feel, in spite of a sad moment at one point. Always playing with the emotions, our Kate.
Totally agree with the order you have placed the three songs in. I would be interested in your reaction to the title track of The Sensual World, probably my favourite Kate Bush song of all
totally! i bought this album when it came out on cassette.. the moment the first song played, i felt like i was being “swept up” into this new world she embarks on.. still love that intro song to this day! “oooo, yes…”
This always makes me sad. It can make me cry. I can't have children. Always wanted too. Sometimes that's just the way life works...but I know my husband has been in that place. Waiting outside my surgery door, scared for me when we were dating. And I remember that waking up from my first surgery I was asking for my mom and him. For my 2nd surgery a few weeks later, I was asking for just him. Him again when I woke from my 3rd a few weeks after. That one was weird. There was a surgeon resident in my room and monitoring me because my blood pressure wouldn't stabilize, it was jumping up and down violently. I had started my period mid-surgery, they had stopped it for surgery 1 and 2 using the Patch. So when we forgot that medication, it came back violently and the pain couldn't be controlled. They spent the entire day and night giving me shots every other hour of muscle relaxers and pain killers. Then they gave me a nurse and put me in a high doses of IV fentanyl, the nurse made sure I didn't stop breathing. Don't remember the entire day. But I woke up and I could handle it all again. Intestinal surgery hurts like s btch.
the first 2 Kate Bush songs I ever heard, or at least remember hearing, were "Wuthering Heights" and "Babooshka", would love to see what you think of it, I've always enjoyed her differentness with her music. great reaction enjoyed watching this again it's been way too long since I last really saw it
I'd like to see Love & Anger done..not many people do that one and it is nice and more upbeat and powerful for one of her songs, plus you get David Gilmore..
Not easy for me to name my three favourite songs. It’s almost a case of my favourite being whatever song I am listening to at the time. So many of her songs are different from anything else and contain something that can make you feel the song stands above anything else. Three of my more recent listens that are worthy of a reaction are ‘Rocket’s Tail’, ‘Moments of Pleasure’ and ‘Cloudbusting’. The first (from The Sensual World album) was not a single and does not have an official music video. But there is a nice compilation video from The Sensual World Of Kate Bush combining lyrics and a montage of photos and video clips.
I've always considered that since the nurse is actually "smiling" at the gentlemen at the very end, means that she did survive. You don't smile when telling someone "she's died' no way!
@@stephenthorpe8457Stephen, this music video" A woman's work" by Kate is NOT I repeat not about her having a baby! In Kate's own words this video is about a man that thinks of all the regrets he has if "she doesn't make it" as she collapses and thinking all of the things he should have said or done. There is no pregnancy or baby involved in this video at all. Yes, Kate wrote the song "This Woman's work" for the movie "She's having a baby" but this music video is not about that at all.
@@stephenthorpe8457 I understand the lyrics.. but if you google about what the song means in this music video you will find in Kate's own words that this music video she made is not about a pregnant woman. Just telling you what Kate has said herself. A lot of people think like you do but it's not true.
I agree with you: We in Western society hate "cliff hangers". IMO anyone over 25 (even younger) gets that Life is beautiful but messy. Subconsciously we have to think there is a "happy ending" for when a challenge visit us, we must feel that we too can weather the storm like the "other" character/person did. Great analysis of a powerful song.
Listen to 'Under The Ivy', her hidden masterpiece. She literally casts a spell on the listener, who needs to make their own interpretation, provide their own meaning. It is simple yet deeply moving.
Hi Anton FOREVER 📺🎧🎤💯💥🎉 With Kate Bush, thank you so much ‼️👌👌💪 It's the feeling with you to talk about kate that I really like 🙏🙏🥳🥳💟 You will surprise us every time with the ever-present smile Anton FOREVER 😁😄😉🥰😘 Amazing, shiny, fantastic, awesome with u 🙀🙆😱🤗💌
I know the song was made for a movie, but I also think that the lost ending was done on purpose, because of the video. You want to be with your loved one til the end and grow old together, and here she is abruptly lost and you are denied that long life together. She is masterful
Your reaction amuses a bit. It has always struck me that the song's narrative depicts a man who is looking in at the woman's "work" - her literal battle for her life, or the life of her child, or both - and he is helpless. And all he can do is ask her to take care of him anyway "oh darling...make it go away". He is helpless. Other language in the song also taps into his need to have things fixed for him. He has relied on her protection, and he shows limited capacity to tap into strength of his own. Poor poor thing. All he needs is for her to fix it so he doesn't have to face his weakness and inattention.
Since you mentioned Kate and Peter Gabriel WRT "Games Without Frontiers", I strongly recommend that you look at Kate's duet with Peter on his song "Don't Give Up" - the music video is very simple, but perfect for the song.
I glad singer Maxwell brought this song to a whole new and different community of people. Without Maxwell's recording of this song, many others probably would have not ever, ever heard of this great song.
You are right about how American films went. Through the eighties and so on people wanted to be the hero but those characters were uninteresting and people like Alan Rickman said the villains are more fun and due to social media and other cultures filtering in we got variety. Predictable is boring, cookie cutout is boring. Kate and Peter and so on are memorable for not being predictable or being formulaic. She's a real talent for sure.
I do not like the movie version, but this official video is amazingly dramatic and poignant. Very creative and thoughtful woman (human). Another beautiful, melancholy duet with Peter is 'Don't Give Up'. You must see that video (Gabriel's tune based upon the Dust Bowl from the dramatic and touching black and white period photos) Never mind. I see you have already reacted to it. Then try 'Cloudbusting' (video) or her anti-war tune and video 'Army Dreamers'.
She directed the video too. All of her videos (Hounds of Love, Experiment IV) remind me of something that David Lynch would direct for some reason. Fun fact, Hugh Laurie (House) is one of the scientists in Experiment IV.
Such a powerful song, great choice - very emotional I'd recommend 'I wasn't expecting that by JL' but I know you don't take recommendations via youtube Yes that movie (PL) was my sister's favourite film..
Humans are a story-telling species. We live and breathe stories. Our lives become stories, so we have special relationships with them and are uncomfortable with uncertainty and unanswered questions.
Now that you know a bit more about Kate and are getting used to her voice it would be interesting to see you return to Wuthering Heights (perhaps try the version 2 music video), which can be quite shocking to the uninitiated. Just bear in mind that she is singing in character. She is the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw come back to haunt Heathcliff.
Not "Games without frontiers" the song was "Don't give up". Listen to "The Ninth Wave", the flip side of"Hounds of love". All I'll say, it's up to you 😉🤗🇨🇦
There are two scenes with the nurse. In the first, in the mid-point of the song, the news she delivers is very sad- the perception being that she had died. But at the end of the song, the second time the nurse comes out, she keeps her hand on the man for a bit longer, and she has a smile on her face- suggesting that Kate had survived. And the man cannot express what he feels. It is this tension between the two outcomes that makes this song so poignant. It is a masterful song with a masterful video- very typical of a masterful artist. I view Kate as one of the greatest singers of all time and as an artist without peer.
I remember someone dubbed this VIDEO but used MAXWELLS best version singing. And blended it beautifully and I really got a much deeper meaning about the song. MAXWELL got a video but doesn't explain anything like her video does.
As a woman who lost 2 children I can tell - without any bad meaning - your man (if you are lucky to have one) you are in some kind of way alone with what you are going through. Cause of course no man will ever be able to feel, understands how it really feels to have a life in you!
True, the song by itself does not give you a clear happy ending. But the video DOES give you the idea that this story does have a happy ending. Check out the smile on the nurse's face the last time she talks to the father. You don't smile while giving bad news.
Kate Bush also has a social conscious side to her. You should listen to and review “Army dreamers” which is somewhat of a war protest song, but also very very good.. it was actually banned here in the UK by the BBC during the Iraq war.
Great reaction Thank you. If you want to check out great movie in your own time if you wish that's very under rated do check out Imaginaerum Movie from the band Nightwish not the concert but the actual movie. It's like a kids flick but with a dark twist worth a watch.
Another enjoyable review! The Sensual World was released in 1989, but was Recorded from September 1987 - July 1989. So you are tech right anyway! And was recorded in her home studio, at her folks place in Kent -Welling where her childhood home is. This song as also in the hit film: She's Having a Baby with Kevin Bacon . My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked South East London in Plumstead in Barth Road as you know. And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath,Welling, Dartford, on our bikes- He some times gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + some times said hello to Hannah as well as Kate etc Memories I wil always cherish. When you come to the UK will show you the house 😁
Men can continue to do whatever we want, just as women do. I'm not aware there is a question about "what the role of men is now". The roles of men are not taken away by or dependent on what women do or want, any more than women feel that what they do or want is dependent on the roles of men. Men and women are both free to continue to participate in or fill the historical, current, and future roles that we choose and interest us. I think it would be sad for a man to feel a lack of purpose just because women are fulfilling their wants and needs. I also don't think women are worried about or questioning what roles are left for men now either. The role of "providing protection" was actually taken away from individual men and women by the global societal structures of police forces and militaries, making individuals as protectors illegal. It has nothing to do with the changing or evolving roles of women. Have loved this song and Cloudbusting and Running up That Hill since my young teen years in the 80's when these songs first came out. I'm happy to see recognition of her work continues today. Thanks for reacting to it!!
Kate Bush is a seminal talent...she is astonishingly brilliant

For all her complexity she really understands some simple rules, don't build big early if you can't go bigger later.
Intestinal surgery hurts like s btch.
the first 2 Kate Bush songs I ever heard, or at least remember hearing, were "Wuthering Heights" and "Babooshka", would love to see what you think of it, I've always enjoyed her differentness with her music. great reaction enjoyed watching this again it's been way too long since I last really saw it
Kate is truly amazing!! Listen to The Directors Cut version of this song - both are brilliant
I'd like to see Love & Anger done..not many people do that one and it is nice and more upbeat and powerful for one of her songs, plus you get David Gilmore..
Watch the video with the movie that this song was written for called "She's Having a Baby" that will explain it more.
Except that there are two people to live or die, i.e. mother or baby. The ambiguity is whether both survived or just one.
@@Rhiannon011 "Now starts the craft of the father" ???
@@stephenthorpe8457 I understand the lyrics.. but if you google about what the song means in this music video you will find in Kate's own words that this music video she made is not about a pregnant woman. Just telling you what Kate has said herself. A lot of people think like you do but it's not true.
@@Rhiannon011 Well, I find that what artists say about their own songs isn't always that reliable. Strange but true!
I absolutely love Kate Bushes music.
oh and i can't pick just 3 Kate Bush songs - maybe 3 from each album but even that would be a challenge - cheers Anton! Great reaction!
Hmmm, my top three KB songs...that's tough. 1. Breathing 2. Babooshka 3. Sat In Your Lap
Pan's Labyrinth is an absolute work of art, as is this song!
Hi Anton FOREVER 📺🎧🎤💯💥🎉 With Kate Bush, thank you so much ‼️👌👌💪
It's the feeling with you to talk about kate that I really like 🙏🙏🥳🥳💟 You will surprise us every time with the ever-present smile Anton FOREVER 😁😄😉🥰😘
Amazing, shiny, fantastic, awesome with u 🙀🙆😱🤗💌
Awwww, thank you Anton. You are in my tribe. xx
Thanks, brother.
God, I hope Kate shows up for her induction into the R&R Hall of Fame.
Check out Moments of Pleasure - stunning song and incredibly moving
I know the song was made for a movie, but I also think that the lost ending was done on purpose, because of the video. You want to be with your loved one til the end and grow old together, and here she is abruptly lost and you are denied that long life together. She is masterful
Shout out to Captain Darling aka the inestimable Tim McInnery for his emotional performance in this video.
She does not die at the end…that is his look of relief…the nurse is smiling when she gives him the news.
It's a toss-up between this and "Cloudbusting" for my favourite Kate Bush song.
Great reading of the lyrics!
This was used for the film She's Having A Baby. But both the mother and the child were alright but you weren't sure until the very end.
Since you mentioned Kate and Peter Gabriel WRT "Games Without Frontiers", I strongly recommend that you look at Kate's duet with Peter on his song "Don't Give Up" - the music video is very simple, but perfect for the song.
You mean the eclipse/hugging video, there's also an alternate version, that is not very well known...
@@rainerzufall42 yes and I'm aware of the alternative version but the hugging one is the one to go for...
@@leslieturner8276 That's for sure, it's the much preferred version, simple and perfect as it is!
I glad singer Maxwell brought this song to a whole new and different community of people. Without Maxwell's recording of this song, many others probably would have not ever, ever heard of this great song.
The second time the nurse came in she was smiling at him as she touched him on the shoulder and the look of relief on his face to be told she was OK.
This "happy ending" also applies to "She's Having A Baby" (1988), what this was written for...
A film in the 80's, that didn't have the typical hollywood ending for example was/is:To Live and Die in L.A.
I do not like the movie version, but this official video is amazingly dramatic and poignant. Very creative and thoughtful woman (human).
Another beautiful, melancholy duet with Peter is 'Don't Give Up'. You must see that video (Gabriel's tune based upon the Dust Bowl from the dramatic and touching black and white period photos)
Never mind. I see you have already reacted to it. Then try 'Cloudbusting' (video) or her anti-war tune and video 'Army Dreamers'.
She directed the video too. All of her videos (Hounds of Love, Experiment IV) remind me of something that David Lynch would direct for some reason. Fun fact, Hugh Laurie (House) is one of the scientists in Experiment IV.
wonderful comment, well done!
Phenomenal songwriting and singing I really recommend maxwells cover of this song it literally made me cry when I had my daughter
Such a powerful song, great choice - very emotional
I'd recommend 'I wasn't expecting that by JL' but I know you don't take recommendations via youtube
Yes that movie (PL) was my sister's favourite film..
Bit sure if you’ve seen Love and Anger by her but it’s wonderful ❤️
Amazing ❤
Kate came before Tori Amos, I used to think they shared DNA myself.
She survived at the end. The nurse was smiling when she told the news to the husband.
That was glitter that implied snow in the music video.
From the movie "She's Having A Baby (1988).
Not "Games without frontiers" the song was "Don't give up".
Listen to "The Ninth Wave", the flip side of"Hounds of love".
All I'll say, it's up to you
😉🤗🇨🇦
MAXWELL got a video but doesn't explain anything like her video does.
this song was written for a movie called She's Having a Baby
As a woman who lost 2 children I can tell - without any bad meaning - your man (if you are lucky to have one) you are in some kind of way alone with what you are going through. Cause of course no man will ever be able to feel, understands how it really feels to have a life in you!
True, the song by itself does not give you a clear happy ending. But the video DOES give you the idea that this story does have a happy ending. Check out the smile on the nurse's face the last time she talks to the father. You don't smile while giving bad news.
You are right, it's not always about sentimentalism.
Kate Bush also has a social conscious side to her. You should listen to and review “Army dreamers” which is somewhat of a war protest song, but also very very good.. it was actually banned here in the UK by the BBC during the Iraq war.
Moments of Pleasure next time please
Tim McInnerny is fantastic in this video
My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked South East London in Plumstead in Barth Road as you
know. And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath,Welling, Dartford, on our bikes- He some times gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + some times said hello to Hannah as well as Kate etc
Memories I wil always cherish.
When you come to the UK will show you the house 😁
I don't know if you know this but David Gilmour of Pink Floyd helped Kate get a jump start on her singing career when she was just a teenager. 😁
I miss your reaction videos a lot.
When you know the story, you realise that there IS an ending, both to the song and the video. But it wouldn't be Kate if everything was obvious.
Wuthering Heights number 1, 2, 3
Waking the witch 😍
Connecting the Hemispheres of the brain is enlightenment. Human growth and fulfillment. (both sexes)
in the song - the woman was going into labour and was in some danger.
