To be honest the idea of anyone hugging their partners for 6 minutes plus is a wonderful thing. The longer the hug the better & totally wonderful to watch!
I’ve heard this song a few times and I always thought it was beautiful. I’m 60 years old and was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease last year. I have been feeling quite hopeless. This time listening to it has made me weep. I don’t want to give up. I don’t.
Same age, and probably share the same traits of so many of our generation, we give great advice to others, but can't take it ourselves, time to take it Art, Don't Give Up!!!
I cant believe that no one comments on the solar eclipse happening in the background which fits the song perfectly. The crescendo of their voices and the whole meaning of the lyrics and the thoughts of suicide coinciding with totality and the corona, then coming safe out on the other side. Beautiful.
I had a similar reaction. I've known and admired this song since it came out. Didn't know that was Kate Bush, though I admit I don't know much about her. Nor did I know there was this lovely music video for it, or that the crisis was the Great Depression. I'm so glad for this reaction video for providing me with that info. Regarding the eclipse, the reactor seems to think it was a day and night motif. She mentions that in the last couple minutes. Understandable, given that she was focused on the singing and lyrics. There is a low point, where Gabriel's lyrics are darkest, emotionally. He is a visual artist. I attribute the eclipse motif to his vision for the video. Those darkest lyrics, for me, are when he says he is on a bridge. That is where the eclipse reaches, I think the term is totality, and the sun's corona is flaming around the moon. It mirrors an emotional state for the man that, again, I hope this is the right term, might be called a fugue state. Intense emotion that seems unbearable. For Bush's part of the song, I always thought it was a hybrid character. Her lyrics are all over the place, like someone meticulously collected every platitude of encouragement, coming from all directions, friends, parents, spouses. But it's put together with profound sincerity, giving it unexpected depth. And she plays it so well, with different emotions, mostly plaintive but even getting cutesy with "You worry too much." A beautiful, uplifting song. So glad to see this reaction!
For all the amazing vocals in this song, I'm going to speak up for its unsung hero - Tony Levin. His bass playing on this song, and on the whole album, is a true masterclass in playing all the right notes, with the right tone, in the right places.
This song has been credited by many people for changing their minds about committing suicide (including Elton John, who said it saved him from drug overdose). Peter Gabriel was inspired to write this song after looking at pictures of families living in the "dust bowl" during the 1930's depression era, seeing the desperation and hopelessness in their eyes. He first asked Dolly Parton to sing the duet with him, but she declined. Gabriel then asked his good friend (and fellow musical genius) Kate Bush to do it. Producer Daniel Lanois said that when Kate came into the studio to record her part everyone there was awe-struck, that they all felt like an angel had come down from heaven to sing for them. Also, Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite artists, but in my opinion it's Kate Bush that really makes this song magical. You should really explore her music, there is just no one like her. A true innovator and pioneer for women in the music industry, she is incredibly influential and highly respected. Another note of trivia, bass extraordinaire Tony Levin was trying the find the right sound for his bass on this track, but just couldn't get the sound he wanted. He happened to have his baby girl's diaper bag with him in the studio, right before the recording, he stuffed a diaper under his bass strings and got that great muted sound that he had been looking for.
Gabriel is dear to my heart and my soul. This song had such an impact on me when I was young and lost. Thank you for this lovely information. All the best, Mike B Los Angeles, California
There was also a context closer to home: the tens of thousands of British miners who lost their jobs and sometimes also their sense of a future, when Thatcher decided to close down coal mining in Britain. The big miners' strike, which followed on this decision, was still ongoing when Gabriel came up with the idea for the song.
Kate really stamped something special onto this track, that much is certain. I've only heard her twice on this channel (this being the third) but there will be much more to come, I am certain!
I wanted to wrote a comment about about the trick Tony Levin - one of my absolute bass idols - used to get that soud out of his Music Man bass but you were faster :-) Peter Gabriel called it "super wonder nappy sound" :D
I had never heard that he asked Dolly to do this song! I have a lot of respect for her, but I'm SO glad she refused Kate's voice is just so perfect there's no way any other version could have been better.
Long story... Senior year of HS 1987. Peter Gabriel's So was sent to me my my record club and I was not a fan of this type of music (metal head) so I was going to send it back. Instead, I opened it and popped the cassette into my car driving one day. I was having a really rough time - family stuff and worried about my future. This record became one of my top 5 albums of all time. This song, in particular, saved my life. For nearly 40 years, I have been suggesting this song to anyone going through a tough time. I became a huge fan of Kate Bush as a result. Thank you so much for reviewing it. It should have been a huge hit.
Watching your reaction, I had to go sit in my car for a while so nobody at work could see the tears in my eyes. As a husband and father, living through a time wherein skill and hard work are rarely enough to give your family the life you crave for them, this song gets me every time. Your reaction added to that. My wife is twice the person I am! She moved to the UK from Prague to be with me. I couldn't imagine someone committing more of themself to jobs lesser people might consider beneath them. She's been here 14 years now and we have two beautiful children. I just wish those in power would stop their destruction of working families.
I sit in unjustified tears with you. I too have a better life than I probably deserve and 2 healthy sons….yet find myself tearing up at the drop of a hat often. This song rips my soul out of my body….always has!! May God Bless you and your beautiful family and grant you all peace, happiness, thankfulness, health and prosperity. 🙏
I share your tears, and yet can't be more different, never been married, 60 this year, aware the clock is ticking ever faster, knowing, regretting till the end of my days that long ago I had the chance, and threw it away.
@@chrisjones2224 Exact same thing here, It takes me back to how simple and easy life used to be and the relationships I let slip through my hands, 54 years old living in a three bedroom house with no one to share it with. Some serious soul searching and crying
@@11Kslingshot I honestly don't remember anyone I knew dating someone because of the potential they had, or what many women these days say, build our Empire. Life was way more simple, date someone because you found them attractive, stay together because it was fun and they were nice etc These days it's like a cross between a job interview and being on the Apprentice, I don't want to date someone that wants to build an Empire !
This song always gets my water works going because it reminds me of when my wife and I lost our home due to my sickness, during the UK housing crash of 2007-2008. I also lost my carer and my wife had to give up work to look after me. This song reminds me so much of those dark, bleak days of feeling so ashamed for my failings. However, we got through it as a team, and still together today. I love her more than I could ever express.
God bless you both. I’m in a similar position where I might lose my business through my own fault and my wife and I could lose everything but she has always supported my through everything for ten years. I don’t deserve her, she’s wonderful. I’m glad you both made it through.
It's not "day to night..." - what happens in the background is an eclipse. We go from the light to a very dark place; but by holding on to one another, we emerge back into the light. This song is such a powerful statement, made even more so by the power of its performers. The over-simplicity of the treatment for the video was equally so. I first heard this song as just another song on Gabriel's new album "So" - and it came through my speakers right after "Sledgehammer." I stoped listening to the rest of the album and just repeated that song so many times. Kate and Peter's voices played off each other so well - the visualization I found when closing my eyes was quite vivid. I don't think I saw the video until this century. Didn't need to. But the eclipse was a perfect visual metaphor. Finally - a great song I loved which was not cheapened by a video. Then again, nothing Kate's ever touched has been lessened by the accompanying video... At any rate, I love your reaction to it - and I know just where it comes from. Keep up the great work!
Yes, they complement each other sp well (and also, Peter had been an inspiration for some aspects of Kate's change of sound in the early 1980s: the use of the fairlight, tribal drum rhythms, a powerfully layered web of sound). Peter's rough, soulful vibe with slight touches of raspiness vs Kate's more "choirgirl" intonation, her full, bright melismas and leaps from alto to higher up..the two are a great match!
@@TheCharismaticVoice Peter can certainly hold a high note right on pitch though;: just check out the stunning recording of San Jacinto on his 1983 live album, and the majestic, beaming notes on the final chorus!
As a young man in the 90s suffering depression, this song was such a solace. Music has always been the best balm for my rage, self-hatred, and depression.
Recognisable. For my it was dhe "Aégis" album of Theatre Of Tragedy, plus music from Tristania, The Sins Of Thy Beloved (a LOT!), Therion, Lacrimosa, Nightwish etc etc etc.
Robin Williams personally thanked Peter Gabriel for recording this song. He found it an enormous comfort during the darker times in his life, and when they met backstage at some showbiz event or other, he thanked him for putting feelings into a song that very few artists ever would.
I have a very good friend who, struggled with PTSD post service. He did end up on a bridge watching them waters flowing. What you are hearing here is desperation underlining Kate’s voice of hope. In these moments, you find your friends.
I can't listen to this song without crying. The entire song is capable of touching everyone somewhere in their past and/or present. I've loved these two singing it for decades.
I am with you Marian. This song means a lot to me. Had a mental breakdown in 2019. It cost me a good year of my life. I am better than I have ever been in my life now, but I couldn’t have done it without my wife. She’s my “Kate” in this song. I lose it every time I hear it.
This song… this song carried me after years of my wife and I battling to save our youngest daughter from depression, drugs, alcohol and suicide. Today she’s doing well. But the toll it took on me has left scars in my heart that will never fully heal. This song, in particular, Kate’s vocals were my wife holding me, keeping me going…
I'm going through exactly this with my youngest daughter since more than 5 years now. She's an empath, very creative, her IQ is in an area that would allow her to join Mensa, but she was bullied in school, didn't get support from her teachers, and became suicidal. She isn't right now, but she can't handle people, is unable to complete school or vocational training. She's living a nocturnal life, and can't get out of the dark hole she is in. I manage by listening mostly to metal, but I am a great fan of both Kate Bush, and Peter Gabriel. The entire album 'So' is just a masterpiece, just as all of Kate's albums 🤘🏻🖤
@@jo_g.germany I have passed trough bully and lonelines, like your daughter. For me, the salvation was to understand that everyone suffers, including those that make other people suffer. Is not to hate them, but to feel pitty, and to justify myself on the mirror. I am just the way i am, no more, no less.
Late to the reaction but 6 years ago I drove myself to the hospital after waking up on a Saturday morning with a pain in my chest and finding it difficult to breath. They diagnosed it as likely being a viral infection however they took a few cultures. Two months later they called and stated that I needed to come to the hospital to review the culture results and take a few CT scans. My wife stood next to me as an oncologist detailed that the test and scans revealed I had stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer that had spread to most of the lymph nodes in my torso and neck. Knowing the diagnosis was going to be bad because they advised me to come in, I was prepared for the worst. When I turned to look at my wife, seeing her shake and begin falling apart literally almost killed me right there and then before the cancer ever had a chance. She spent the next two years preparing my meals, making sure I took my medications correctly and on time, cleaning up after me, moderating my warmth and cooling with the wild fluctuations in my internal body temp, taking me to my cancer treatments and through it all not letting me, or our daughter, fall into despair or consider the worst for even a moment. I never fully grasped how much the love of an amazing woman and child would be when I was younger and on occasion, I find myself questioning who I am to deserve this. I do know now that having a strong woman, and daughter, both with a gentle hearts love and support you cannot be equaled. Thanks to them I have been cancer free since. This song has me crying now. Great >_
I consider this to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It will still strike chords with future generations, as it's comforting message is truly timeless.
Such a beautiful song that means something different to all of us.. My marriage broke up 13 years ago, my wife left for another guy. I lost my wife, my home & seeing my 2 children every day.. I bought a small caravan to live in whilst I got myself back to my feet, financially and mentally. It took a year. My parents sent me this CD in the post with a letter that still makes my heart cry, but in a good way.. Great song.
Ya, my wife threw me away also around the same amount of time ago, all because she looked at me as a loser. Ironically she's the one who turned me into one and kept me that way, even though I was loving, a good father of 3 boys, etc. Only ever asked for her support, she instead just ignored me and judged, driving herself out of the marriage and destroying our beautiful family. I'm still trying to recover, primarily because having my own happy family was to make up for the suffering for first half of my life, for I also spent so much effort preparing myself to make it such. But, nothing prepared me for picking someone completely undevoted and uncaring.
18 years with the same lady did not no her im close to my 2 children love them lots saved for a Harley davidson my new love respect to you mate its hard but learned alot hope it goes will for you life begins again ❤
Similar situation, 4 years on and I think of ending it all every day. My kids I see every few weeks are only 12 and 13 and told me the pain would pass to them, so I'm still stuck here every day living for now.
@@johncallaghan1787 More or less same same here. 20 years ago. On the other side now. Really close with my two daughters now. I never expected so much good could come out of it. Becomes granddad in February.
I suffer from severe depression for over 30 years and from loneliness for over 40 years. Am almost 55 years old now and never had a close relationship. Have never felt really loved in my entire life, not even from my parents. And when i saw this video for the first time decades ago, i instantly realized that it would become one of my all time favorites, but i also knew that i have never been hugged like that or hugged anyone like that in my life. It still hasn´t happened, an most likely never will. This song and the voices of Peter and Kate instantly give me goosebumps and tears, probably cause i have pretty much given up on finding love, but there is still this hunger inside. There is another song that touches me deep inside like this one and has become my second favorite of all time: R.E.M. "Everybody hurts".
Just to say ,this not down to you, you,you are worthy of love .friendship, and comfort, I send you my heartfelt love and support ,I still experience isolation, and those feelings ,sending you hugs ,and peace ,you are deserving of these things ,and more ,I know you are a compassionate person, I am with you in heart and spirit ,stay strong ,you are not alone.
I've been thru layoffs. They're painful. I first heard this song in the middle of a year without work. I sobbed like a baby. Played it for my wife and told her "You're the encouraging one here - you're Kate Bush." This song still breaks my heart.
The song, including the 6/8 time signature, reflects the motion and journey they make as a couple. It starts with the focus on ‘l’, with a very male perspective on loss and shame. As the song progresses, the female character brings support, strength and perspective to the relationship, changing the narrative from his I to their ‘We’. By the end they are becoming a cohesive couple, underpinned by the strength of a good woman supporting the male vulnerability. An absolute classic.
And it’s not all 6/8 or 3/4; Gabriel skips beats here & there, and changes to 5/8 (in the bluesy part). Or am I wrong? However, the craftmanship is unparalleled…
Isn't a lot of gospel music in 6/8? The piano in the bridge (ha - gonna stand on that bridge...) is gospley too. This song makes me bite my tongue it's so beautiful.
This song has been my "fight song" for the last 6 years. Forced out of my home state, my home, and losing everything I owned including my cat. This was due to a serious case of depression after losing my soulmate to suicide. I've been living in a medical facility(due to having spina bifida and not having a home) in another state since then. So whenever I have the feeling of giving up and not fighting to regain my independence. I throw this song on and I refocus my efforts to obtain my goals. I remember that I still have incredible friends and family that are fighting alongside me. Loved your analysis and breakdown of the vocals. Peter and Kate have such beautiful voices and incredible ability to best express the message of the song.
This isn't just a song. This 1 literally pulled me out of oblivion. It's incredibly powerful. There are certain songs that connect differently, this is 1 of those.
I am grateful you're out of oblivion, Gemma. I can see how this song can make impactful change in someone, and am overjoyed these two have been able to create magic, especially for your sake!
This song still destroys me in the best way every time I hear it, same as the first time I heard it decades ago. One of the crown jewels of modern music. To say I love this song is an understatement; this song IS LOVE, so how could you not feel it? An amazing, elevating piece of music that is a true example of the elevating power of art. This is medicine.
It's maybe my favourite song to play as a bassist. Gorgeous. I can play it no problem, but the artistic sensitivity that came up with it is beyond me. What an artist
Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel first collaborated on "Games Without Frontiers" ... they would continue to work with each other from that point forward. They were both big fans of each other.
Whoever had the idea of adding the solar eclipse in the backdrop to accompany the mood shifts of the song, is art director of the century. Pure simple genius.
I think it was meant to indicate a lunar eclipse rather than a solar eclipse. But the effect on the mood is similar if not greater as the moon is more closely associated with lovers and strangely with dark moods and uncertainties in life.
Certain songs will take you to places you can’t remember having visited before. The moment it takes you there you know what you needed. This is one of those songs. A little key to lock and unlock emotions and heartmemories. Love this song for what it brings.
Even this Saturday, I and a friend that works at the local heavy music store were listening to a Cars compilation and lamenting when there was space for this kind of quality in the commercial music space... Bring back the 80s, 🤡🤡🌍🌍 sucks! 😉😉😁

We watched a movie “She’s Having a Baby” which resonated with us after 6 years of trying to have babies (it did eventually work out in 2 sets of twins), but there is this beautiful Kate Bush song “This Woman’s Work” that touched my heart and helps me appreciate my wife and everything she does and who she is.
Background on this song- A number of things inspired Peter Gabriel to pen this track. They include the following: A news article about a woman who committed suicide while holding her child. A television show about an unemployed family. Sad photographs of impoverished Americans during the Great Depression Speaking to music site Songfacts, Gabriel’s ex wife (Jill) said she was the one who gave Gabriel the newspaper containing the story about the woman who committed suicide. According to her, that sad story in the newspaper was what originally inspired the song. Moreover Gabriel himself suffered from a serious personal crisis shortly before this song was written. And according to him, the song served as a tribute to those, specifically his family members, who stood by him during that harrowing time in his life. Source: Song meaning + facts
This is super fascinating, Mark. Thank you! I learned some of this stuff while reading through the prep document that Paolo puts together, but not all of this. Thank you!

The thing many people fail to comment on as an inspiration is the mining industry collapse under Margaret Thatcher. Hundreds of thousands lost their jobs during this time.
Elizabeth discovering that Kate and Peter wrote "her song" decades ago when she realized how deeply loving and uplifting this song really is. Two giants of the industry together, and this is what you get, an alternative love-song for the ages. Ty for the reaction, cannot ever go wrong with either Kate or Peter, let alone those two together ;)
I had brain surgery and a stroke in January. We moved from colorado to tennessee, to try to make a new start. I have had the hardest, darkest time I've ever been through. I would not have made it without the support and love of my wife.
"So" was a powerhouse album in the 80s. There are few albums that I have listened to more times (back when ppl listened to whole albums), or have affected me as much. Gabriel is not just a massively talented singer songwriter but a gifted performer as well. His concerts, and I've seen him at least five times, are remarkable for their original sets and lighting. He brings a theater actor's perspective to his stand out performances so the visual aspect really ties into the music more than most (same is true in his videos). He has been a curve driver for more than fifty years in a fickle and unforgiving business. He is an artist's artist, a storyteller's storyteller. And this duet with Kate Bush is just a tour de force. The patience, the need, the vulnerability, the devotion and affirmation make me tear up every time I her this song.
Peter Gabriel is one of my all time favourite singers and song writers. He has such a distinct sounding voice, and his music just has such emotion to it.
I'm just here to see your reaction...and read all the comments about people going through difficult times and using this song as a means to get through them. Thank you for this. I was a child of the 80s, and I knew that this one would be a classic the moment I heard it...
I forgot about this song. I haven’t heard this song in several decades. Not since my mother passed. She was a big Peter Gabriel fan. I didn’t think I would cry watching this. This is exactly what I needed and never knew it.
Wonderful analysis again Elizabeth. As a Brit I am so happy and proud that you got into two of my all-time favourite artists; and arguably two of the most iconic and creative UK artists we have ever had. This is probably my favourite male-female duet ever; wonderfully expressive singing as you say. I also love the fact you got so moved by this song - I think you would have to have a heart of stone not to be.
Yeah the originally thought of Dolly Parton would have been ‘interesting’ but angelic Kate is so magical can’t imagine anyone else 😢 These two English legends so perfect together. Seeing Peter in another month here in San Francisco, gosh if somehow Kate could be teleported from her English farmhouse (lol) to sing this song just ONE more time with Peter 😮😮🎉🎉 Who cares how fat both have become in older age..all the more human element to this song. Wish they had become a couple ❤
You probably won’t believe this but when Peter wrote this song Kate Bush wasn’t his first choice to duet it with him. Unbelievably it was Dolly Parton who he initially thought would be good to duet this song with. She turned it down so he asked Kate.
Thank you *soooo much* for this analytic reflection. I'm 62 years old, and have loved this song since its original release. But I must confess... I've loved it mostly for the sonorous beauty of Peter and Kate's voices so magically melding together. I've never really paid much attention to the actual lyrics. Never knew the backstory, never seen the video. Now, thanks to your revelatory dissection, I understand why it has moved me to tears for so many decades, even as I only subliminally acknowledged its full depth as an amazing compassion. As a former choir member and singer/songwriter myself, I appreciate this sort of review much more than your typically "liked it/didn't like it" reaction type thing. Thanks so much for this... as much as the song itself, you've given me a gift of exposing layers and revealing unseen depth to an already beloved tune...
As amazing as this duet is, it's Kate's vocal in "This Woman's Work" and Peter's vocal in "Red Rain" that still send shivers down my spine to this day, and I am old enough to remember their albums coming out back in the 80's.
I saw Gabriel perform Red Rain live in 86 and I must agree with you, his voice is no less than amazing in this song yet, the song for me that sends chills up my spine is San Jacinto, when "He holds the line".
My brother sent me this song when I was at my deepest despair. It still rings within me whenever I hear it and reminds me of renewing my fight for life. That was over 20 years ago. Happy to say, I found my place where I belong and it still brings me to tears.
Just FYI, the players on this recording are also incredibly special, and I think their contributions help make the song so moving. Tony Levin’s playing fretless bass, Richard Tee (Paul Simon/studio work) is playing the gospel piano that gives the bridge such emotional weight and lift, and Stewart Copeland (The Police) is playing high hat and bass drum with Tony on the outro. Apologies for leaving anyone out. Fabulous reaction and analysis, btw, and thanks for not letting the feeling of it get lost in the thinking about how it was made. 🙏🏼
Have adored this since I first heard it as a 16 year old who didn't really understand it, as a 30 year old who needed it in my life just to hang on and as a 53 year old who can reflect upon its beauty as a piece of music. Watching you find and enjoy it is so wonderful and I am immensely proud of my fellow Brits for creating this masterpiece xx
I owned 'So' as a kid, and this was one of my favorite songs on the album. I haven't heard or thought of it in 30 years, and couldn't have named the title if you had begged me...but the second those opening chords came in, I started tearing up...one of those songs that immediately pulls on my heartstrings, even though I didn't remotely comprehend what it meant as an 11-year-old back in 1986...
When you mentioned that you had been pointed to a duet between these two, I couldn't contain my excitement. I'm screaming "oh my god, she didn't know!" "She doesn't know about this song!" I literally couldn't wait to see you experience this for the first time.
Peter Gabriel is in his element here. His work with early Genesis was about story-telling. He doesn't have the most "professional" voice, but it is haunting and always on key. It draws you in to his angst, and lays it open.
Wonderful choice for the new year to keep us all going. Peter's voice is so pure. His work in Genesis deserves some of your attention. The Musical Box or Carpet Crawlers really stand out, especially with the supporting vocals of Phil Collins.
@@TheCharismaticVoice YES!!!! I definitely second the original poster's call for "The Musical Box" and "Carpet Crawlers"... and would add "In The Cage," as well. Cheers!
Looking forward to it. Lots of great songs from the PG era of Genesis but not many live performances. My favourite is the Belgian TV version of The Musical Box. Great quality video and showcase of Peter and Phil's vocals as well as the virtuosity of the entire band
I first heard this song while recovering from major spinal surgery. I felt weak, defeated, uncertain, and was deeply depressed and in tremendous pain. That repeated refrain by Bush “Don’t give up” meant more than I could say back then. An amazing song in all respects.
Elizabeth… your reaction to Kate’s 🎶you worry too much🎶 and 🎶Please, don’t give up🎶is as heartwarming as the song itself. Best, most genuine, emotional reaction possible. Perfect example of why new media is the here, now and the future. Traditional TV just can’t provide the connection to its audience that this does. Thanks for the feels ❤️❤️
This song means more to me than any other song. I can't watch it without crying. It's the song I played to myself during the time I told my wife I'd lost my job when she was at home with our young kids. It really framed my attitude to that time and helped me. I still love it and come back to it.
As a 50 year old man, this song always made me cry. The struggles of a man who was responsible for the destiny and prosperity of his family. His opportunity was stolen and now he felt lost and a failure. Then his love, his life partner, tries to console and reassure him. I experienced this through a wonderful 30 year partnership. Seems that nowadays, that kind of partnership is gone. Man and Woman were always equal, in different roles. These days, that has all gone to shit. I wonder if another song like this could ever be recorded again.
yes, this song is so intimate and personal, I thought the analysis would be like dissecting a butterfly, wrong, but she did it with tact, reverence and skill that highlighted how they got the message across of a man driven to the brink of suicide because of the load put on his shoulders after failing to provide and being saved by a strong partnership positivity and tenderness
The vulnerability of loss of pride/dignity by the male is countered by the unwavering support and love by the woman is clearly evident and performed beautifully. The long embrace is so much more touching than two singers just facing each other and singing. In the live version the song continues a bit longer with the upbeat bass change. I also loved the gradual eclipse as the relationship is tested , with the sun coming again.
I always felt this to be the perfect duet of all the duets I know. The mutual understanding and respect both in the lyrics and on an artistic level is overwhelming and you can feel the emotions everytime you hear it. I'm still getting shivers and tear up, even after so many years. I just love both Peter and Kate and respect their work so, so much. I even thought that Kate's "Watching You Without Me" was written by Peter, it sounds so much like him. But it isn't, it's her song. And that's probably another hint how much they not only respect, but also influenced one another.
I’m one of those saved by this song; it came out at a very dark point in my life and, most of all, Kate’s “no need to be ashamed” was just so important to hear and feel… I love these people to bits until I die. I have also thought the C section of the song, the “rest your head…” part, is essentially a gospel piece, a very spiritual moment, with even the reference to a river, a very strong symbol in gospel music. Thanks for the brilliant analysis ❤
One of the greatest pop duets ever made, this song gives me chills every time. Gabriel's downtrodden lyrics are heartbreakingly performed and Kate's chorus is like a warm hug that makes everything feel not so bad. I put this one on often, when life seems a bit shit. Plus, great to see you listen to more Kate - you should definitely check out some of her earlier stuff to see her incredible range - it's not all Running up that Hill and This Woman's Work!
There is still some good music around these days, but not one single song that really burns deep down in your heart like this. Yet again, Kate shows true mastery and you, Elizabeth, find exactly the right words to describe it.
That is no longer just a hug; they're holding each other. If you're not moved by the emotion in their performances, you have no empathy. Love both of them!
"Don't Give Up" The Best Motto for Life! 🤘 Elizabeth mentioned Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) Man, the first real, non-staged, Great Depression era documentary photos... kudos to Elizabeth for mentioning the dark times too!
5:35 This song was released in the midst of the despair of the 1980s Thatcher era labour struggles when entire towns were unemployed and receiving minimal help to repurpose themselves. But its immortal and could be about 1930s or 2010s USA, 1990s Russia or Argentina, or any other despairing time or people. Kate Bush in this song is the woman men don't even know exists, but yes...they do. I have been privileged in my life to know more than one as empathic & real as this character, and I encourage anyone to be both of these people not just seek them. I mean, if you can BE Peter Gabriel, be Peter Gabriel.
This is the most beautiful and thoughtful reaction video I've ever seen, featuring this song. THANK you for the lens through which you see and for your trained ear, as well. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush are, separately, two of my favorite musical artists/songwriters... have been for decades. Together, they are absolutely sublime. No one has a voice like Peter. No one has a voice like Kate. Very few can craft songs the way they can. They are both sound architects as much as they are fine artists. Able, as you've pointed out, to express emotion and intention through progressions and transitions and choice of instrumentation and vocal pitch. Each of them is a force of nature. This song is so archetypal. Tells a story that is so common to the human experience, in general. Their singing conveys the heartache, the grief, the love, the empathy, and yes, even the hope inherent in what it means to travel through crises, together. Your analysis of the song, their vocals, the nuances that make up this work of art is lovely, intelligent, and soulful. It enriches my experience of a song that I had already long ago fallen in love with.
This song is therapeutic. Its so full of compassion and acceptance. Kate lyrics - every single person in the world should hear this: You are not alone, you have us, there is a place where we belong, no need to feel ashamed, we are proud of who you are. So many of us struggling out there... Please, don't give up ❤
Peter Gabriel's powerful and wonderful words and music with his so special and beautiful voice, he is my favourite singer ever!!! It's so nice to see someone being so much amazed by this sing!!!
Elizabeth, your reaction to this song is precisely why I continue to binge your reaction videos. Your analysis is amazing, but it's the authentic emotion you show here (and in all your videos, honestly) that is just wonderful. Made me cry. Keep on doing what you do, sister!
Earlier in her career Kate had learned important techniques in musicproduction from and because of Peter, when after her two first albums, she took more and more control over her own compositions and how SHE wanted them to sound like. So their relationship has a history of respect toward each other. It shows off here. Their duet has this natural feeling for me because of this fact. Kate herself created her 40+ year career in which she kept surprising her fans with songs that are never like what was before. She really took her time in creating her music, but that is why it has a more than normal quality for me. Please listen to Hello Earth or A Coral Room, Among Angels (which could be her answer to this very song she did with Peter), The Sensual World. I could go on and on. I have enjoyed this reaction so much, because of how you know where to put the emphasis on each note and use of the vocal chords. Besides that your own emotions evoked by the support Kate shows in this song. When this song was released I was were Peter's character was. Unimployed in a dark time with many uncertainties regarding the future. It was a very hard time to keep believing things would turn out right. So being a fan of Kate's for quite some years at that time, I felt as if she was singing directly to me. Of course I was aware, that was my fantasy. But still it did feel good! And this song really was a support for me during these awful times, which lasted for about 5 years of my life.
One of the best opening lines in any song I've heard: "In this proud land we grew up strong........." And it just grows from there. Brilliant song, tastefully analysed.
Oh my woooord. 😭 This song used to play on MTV, when they still played music. I loved this, but I was young and didn't really understand it. Now, hearing this after so many years...this song made me cry, Elizabeth made my cry, having a supportive partner made me cry. Thank you SO MUCH for this - echoes from the past sounding even greater today. 😭❤
Oh, and I have to add: I always thought analysing and breaking down music would ruin it for me. Like, oh, music is a feeling etc. How wrong I was! It just gives so much more.
I love how you are discovering Kate Bush… I was a teen when I discovered Kate Bush in the 80s and her music gave me so much comfort going through difficult times as all teens go through… when this song came out, it was another source of comfort. Listening to it now again many years later with your lovely analysis, it’s got me tearing up again, I’m a puddle, and your breakdown of it makes me see and hear things in a new light, so thank-you. Also I’d now say seeing the video , the eclipse in the background, it is the embodiment of the phrase, “this too shall pass” - when going through a dark times. “This too shall pass” Oh! one more thing I’ve taken away, the ending w the bass line, it feels like a heartbeat! ❤ 💗 and the soulful singers could be like your ancestors telling you everything is going to be okay. Ok… sorry LAST thing I’d like to ask about Kate Bush - if you go through her discography in chronological order, her voice deepens over time, from the initial Wuthering Heights in ‘78 to when she re-recorded it in ‘85 - is this a natural progression in a singer’s voice?
I was 16 when this song came out and watching your face is everything my little teenage heart could hope to see. Telling my friends; “You HAVE to hear this song, it makes me cry!” I can smell the Aquanet hairspray and Lipsmackers lipgloss. What a lovely gift of time travel you’ve just given me. Thank you.🥲
Imagine hugging Kate Bush for six minutes while she is singing in your ear. Pure bliss!
Absolutely
Not to mention the retakes....
I don't know how you would remember the words
To be honest the idea of anyone hugging their partners for 6 minutes plus is a wonderful thing.
The longer the hug the better & totally wonderful to watch!
@@annakissed3226 you are right, I did that today. It was great for the soul
I’ve heard this song a few times and I always thought it was beautiful. I’m 60 years old and was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease last year. I have been feeling quite hopeless. This time listening to it has made me weep. I don’t want to give up. I don’t.

I’m a six foot two metal head and this song makes me sob like a baby. It’s so damn beautiful
Everytime 🤙👍🤘😎
After Kate's solo in the Gospel section when Peter comes in with "Got to walk out of here" just breaks my heart.
Same here
I'm also a metal head, but also a massive fan of PG and Kate and it really is extraordinarily beautiful.
You're not alone brother
I cant believe that no one comments on the solar eclipse happening in the background which fits the song perfectly. The crescendo of their voices and the whole meaning of the lyrics and the thoughts of suicide coinciding with totality and the corona, then coming safe out on the other side. Beautiful.
Today is the first time that I noticed there's an eclipse happening behind them, and I've known this song since it came out!
And she plays it so well, with different emotions, mostly plaintive but even getting cutesy with "You worry too much."
A beautiful, uplifting song. So glad to see this reaction!
For all the amazing vocals in this song, I'm going to speak up for its unsung hero - Tony Levin. His bass playing on this song, and on the whole album, is a true masterclass in playing all the right notes, with the right tone, in the right places.
I was going to write something similar about Levin but figured that someone else surely would have commented and of course, you did.
You should try and listen to Kate Bush “This Woman Work “ . Her voice is out of this world.
Tony is my bass hero.
Yes! Uncle Tony did unparalleled job in this album..
I never focust on that, but I was very impressed 👍
All the best,
Mike B Los Angeles, California
Anybody that has dry eyes listening to this song has no soul, or has never suffered.
Life was way more simple, date someone because you found them attractive, stay together because it was fun and they were nice etc
These days it's like a cross between a job interview and being on the Apprentice, I don't want to date someone that wants to build an Empire !
So glad you made it through mate , god bless you and the wife!!
I've seen this video before but today was the first time I noticed the eclipse!
Peter’s voice carries an element of tragedy, which suits a lot of his songs. And Kate sounds like a best friend or guardian angel.
I've always said that conveying emotion is much more important than pitch or talent. Peter has it all!
@@TheCharismaticVoice I like to say, great music you love you just don't simply listen to, You experience it! It elicits an emotional response.
Well said.
@@TheCharismaticVoice Peter can certainly hold a high note right on pitch though;: just check out the stunning recording of San Jacinto on his 1983 live album, and the majestic, beaming notes on the final chorus!

Couldn't agree more. 👏
That's a great way to put it, Gary. I love it!
It warms my heart that you're still with us and didn't give in. I hear you.
I’ll second this comment -
Same here; I cry every single time
Years ago, this song saved my sister's life.
I am saddened to hear your struggle, but grateful everything worked out. Thank you for sharing, Wraith! ❤

I hear you brother . Same situation here . Stay strong !!

I suffer from severe depression for over 30 years and from loneliness for over 40 years. Am almost 55 years old now and never had a close relationship. Have never felt really loved in my entire life, not even from my parents.
And when i saw this video for the first time decades ago, i instantly realized that it would become one of my all time favorites, but i also knew
that i have never been hugged like that or hugged anyone like that in my life. It still hasn´t happened, an most likely never will.
This song and the voices of Peter and Kate instantly give me goosebumps and tears,
probably cause i have pretty much given up on finding love, but there is still this hunger inside.
I hear you and your pain, it's an agony to live without the love you yearn for. Bless you and I understand.
You're not alone my friend.
You really are not alone, I'm sending you a big hug , take good care of yourself, every life is precious.
Definitely not alone. Hang in there.
Imagine hugging Kate Bush for six minutes. Pure bliss.
There is nothing that Kate Bush has done that doesn't move me, she is truly hypnotically beautiful.
I've been thru layoffs. They're painful.
I first heard this song in the middle of a year without work. I sobbed like a baby. Played it for my wife and told her "You're the encouraging one here - you're Kate Bush."
This song still breaks my heart.
Imo is more likely 3/4 time. Great point anyway.
And it’s not all 6/8 or 3/4; Gabriel skips beats here & there, and changes to 5/8 (in the bluesy part). Or am I wrong? However, the craftmanship is unparalleled…
Is it just me or has female support of male vulnerability gotten so rare. This song hit. There is so much attacking these days, both ways.
Isn't a lot of gospel music in 6/8? The piano in the bridge (ha - gonna stand on that bridge...) is gospley too. This song makes me bite my tongue it's so beautiful.
Yeah, Gabriel is a master of time - check out Solsbury Hill

The absolute power of Peter Gabriel's composition and arrangement are astounding. But his voice, his voice is just so extraordinary.
The empathy in Kate's performance is breathtaking
It's what she does best
She's a master at conveying emotions. This Woman's Work is another masterpiece.
This song always gets me. Never gets old. Tony Levin's bass is epic.
I was immediately sure it was Tony Levin, epic and so evidently him. good to see the confirmation.
musically he caries the song, the entire time
Peter always surrounded himself with the best musicians. Tony Levin is the best bassist around.
If you hear Peter Gabriel, odds are Tony is on bass or Chapman Stick. IMO, his playing is a large factor in the greatness of the songs.
Came here to say just this. Tony Levin is such a unique musician.
I was so enthralled by Peter and Kate that it was many times seeing this video before I noticed the eclipse. What a feeling when I saw it. Huge smile!
Godley and Creme of 10cc (I'm Not In Love) directed the video.
I think it was meant to indicate a lunar eclipse rather than a solar eclipse. But the effect on the mood is similar if not greater as the moon is more closely associated with lovers and strangely with dark moods and uncertainties in life.

Best song you have ever reviewed. This song has prevented a lot of suicides.
This song literally kept me from “checking out” at one point in my life
Background on this song-
A number of things inspired Peter Gabriel to pen this track. They include the following:
A news article about a woman who committed suicide while holding her child.
A television show about an unemployed family.
Sad photographs of impoverished Americans during the Great Depression
Speaking to music site Songfacts, Gabriel’s ex wife (Jill) said she was the one who gave Gabriel the newspaper containing the story about the woman who committed suicide. According to her, that sad story in the newspaper was what originally inspired the song.
Moreover Gabriel himself suffered from a serious personal crisis shortly before this song was written. And according to him, the song served as a tribute to those, specifically his family members, who stood by him during that harrowing time in his life.

This is super fascinating, Mark. Thank you! I learned some of this stuff while reading through the prep document that Paolo puts together, but not all of this. Thank you!
the song "home sweet home" is the song about the woman who committed suicide while holding her child. it is on his second album (Scratch).
"Red Rain" same album, same mood. I always thought it came out of Manchester, UK or somewhere over there...
@@TheCharismaticVoice Please go listen to Peter and Paula Cole perform this song live!
It will reveal the melody you were straining to hear in the fade out, and it will leave you smiling.

Two of the best voices of all time in a song that has genuinely saved lives - can’t wait to see this
Great message for all us - " Don't Give Up"
Don't EVER lose the sappy. It means you feel. You have a heart. You appreciate what is real.
Peter Gabriel is one of my all time favourite singers and song writers. He has such a distinct sounding voice, and his music just has such emotion to it.
He has also one of the most gorgeous falsettos of anyone..
Thank you. I was deeply moved. ❤
Well I was hoping Kate was saving herself for me tbh. :-) @@steveguth1987
The best duet in pop history. Thank you!
You probably won’t believe this but when Peter wrote this song Kate Bush wasn’t his first choice to duet it with him. Unbelievably it was Dolly Parton who he initially thought would be good to duet this song with. She turned it down so he asked Kate.
He probably wanted to hug Dolly for 6 minutes
Biggest "brings tears to my eyes" song for me.
When he hits that falsetto note toward the end, good gracious! Other worldly.
As amazing as this duet is, it's Kate's vocal in "This Woman's Work" and Peter's vocal in "Red Rain" that still send shivers down my spine to this day, and I am old enough to remember their albums coming out back in the 80's.
This woman's work is an absolute masterpiece. My favorite song of all time ever.
Peter Gabriel is a GOAT
I saw Gabriel perform Red Rain live in 86 and I must agree with you, his voice is no less than amazing in this song yet, the song for me that sends chills up my spine is San Jacinto, when "He holds the line".
My brother sent me this song when I was at my deepest despair. It still rings within me whenever I hear it and reminds me of renewing my fight for life. That was over 20 years ago. Happy to say, I found my place where I belong and it still brings me to tears.
I love the whole solar eclipse happening in the background. Expressing light turning to darkness, then back to light at the end.
I love Richard Tee's intro to their famous Central Park performance of "Bridge over Troubled Water". Amazing spin on the now iconic piano intro
a perfect example why so many artist mention Kate as one of their idols.
You had me blubbing like a baby during this song. I love your empathy with the lyrics. Beautiful.
The time signature "softens" when Kate sings...more movement in Peter's vocal part, sort of emphasizing his search for success / a break.
I would say, they absolutely nailed this. The performance. The vocals. The message.
Peter Gabriel is just an AMAZING master craftsman of meaningful and emotional songs, and fantastic singer. LOADS to explore in his career.
I plan to hear more of his catalogue soon, Jay!
@@TheCharismaticVoice YAY! :D Love to the 3 of you!
Peter Gabriel is one of the best singers of the last 50 years.
When you mentioned that you had been pointed to a duet between these two, I couldn't contain my excitement. I'm screaming "oh my god, she didn't know!" "She doesn't know about this song!" I literally couldn't wait to see you experience this for the first time.
This song has got me and many others through some very, very dark times.
Carpet Crawlers my fav Gabriel / Genesis track. That & The Chamber of 32 Doors.
A few others have been calling for more Peter Gabriel and Genesis work. I hear you all, and I'll make it happen this year!
Yeah chamber of 32 doors is another one of genesis songs that peters vocal totally grabs you.
A great duet sung by two great vocalists. The video was a perfect example of where less is more.
I can not hear this song without crying. It’s so powerful. ❤😢
I never thought this song could be greater than it is, BUT watching you watch/listen to this has taken it to new heights.
yes, this song is so intimate and personal, I thought the analysis would be like dissecting a butterfly, wrong, but she did it with tact, reverence and skill that highlighted how they got the message across of a man driven to the brink of suicide because of the load put on his shoulders after failing to provide and being saved by a strong partnership positivity and tenderness
"We're proud of who you are"
One of the greatest pop duets ever made, this song gives me chills every time.
Also, if you love Gabriel's storytelling - check out some of his stuff with Geneis - Harold the Barrel or The Fountain of Salmacis would be awesome
Elizabeth mentioned Dorothea Lange (1895-1965)
Man, the first real, non-staged, Great Depression era documentary photos... kudos to Elizabeth for mentioning the dark times too!
Very timely, unfortunately. ☹☹🤬🤬
This is so typical of his amazing song writing ability. The story and their amazing blending of vocals. Almost always. Makes me tear up.
Such. A. Beautiful. Song. Your reaction was equally exquisite. The actual vid? Shrug. The all-important vocals? (Chef's kiss)
“This too shall pass”
Oh! one more thing I’ve taken away, the ending w the bass line, it feels like a heartbeat!
Beautiful, just beautiful. Such a moving song.
And thanks Elizabeth for your sensitivity and caring words for those who sometimes struggle.
I was 16 when this song came out and watching your face is everything my little teenage heart could hope to see. Telling my friends; “You HAVE to hear this song, it makes me cry!”
I can smell the Aquanet hairspray and Lipsmackers lipgloss. What a lovely gift of time travel you’ve just given me. Thank you.🥲
One of the most Beautiful songs EVER!, Performed by 2 of the All-time Best Artistes 💕💕💕❤️❤️❤️
