Kate Bush is an absolute genius. One of the most original voice in music, as both a singer and a songwriter. Not to mention director, choreographer and everything else she does.
I have always believed that this song is, hands down, the saddest, most poignant lamentation ever written. The video just amps up the loss and grief to a level that's almost too much to bear. One of Kate's many moments of perfection.
This song kills me every time. And when combined with that video it’s almost too much. Tim McInnerny who stars in the video was known for his comic character ‘Captain Darling’ from Blackadder (I’m old!) so to see him in such a tragic role is even more heartbreaking and he does it really well. Love Kate, and this is definitely one of my favourite of her songs. Thanks for the video.
Not long after this came out, I lost my dad. I would play this over and over, just crying. I'd been a fan for a long time, but this one HITS. Then I lost my husband to covid in 2020 and I did the same thing again. It was lockdown, I was alone, and at times the tears were just shut up inside and I couldn't get them out. This song is cathartic. It opened me up and let me cry again, which I needed. And it still does it to me. *wipes tears* Another song of hers that does that is Cloudbursting. p.s. Power of the wolf is great!
We Americans came late to the musical beauty of Kate Bush. It's been a pleasure finding her repertoire/voice. This song in particular affects my heart because it's so brutally beautiful.
@gijsbertuslaurensvandevooren think I said that...lapses of time raising children/working/breaking relationships will do that to some people. We and friends were 30-somethings apparently devoid of current/upcoming artists. Took a bit to get back to. Thanks.
Absolutely one of the most beautiful voices on our planet, in my humble opinion. Kate has an angelic voice and can connect with anyone, on some level. What an amazing gift to have......... Peace Beth! Skal!
Even in my most hardcore/death metal days in the eighties and nineties, I still had a real love of several female performers of the time period...Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Hope Sandoval, Natalie Merchant...all of them had an impact on my life in some small way...
I always thought The Dreaming (1982) was just as extreme and unconventional musically as extreme metal, in some ways in the Thrash tradition but channeled through pop. Weird intuition but I'm convinced a lot of metalheads like Kate Bush.
The fact that Celtic music played such an influential part in Kate's music is one of the things I love best about her work. That voice! What an amazing Artist!
This is one of the best things she's ever done. And its not as if there isnt a lot of competition in her back catalogue for that. But for poignancy.... theres hardly anything else like it. The video is superb. And kudos to McInnerny, he absolutely nails what needed to be conveyed.
Can`t agree on the video, its awful, i`ve never seen such an unremarkable lead actor. I can`t watch Mclnnerny do any serious acting, he`s got a face and neck for comedy i`m afraid.
This was used in the movie She's having a Baby with Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern and depicts the situation where they almost loses their baby and Kevin Bacons character is in fear of loosing his wife. It is really heart wrenching. I love this song and it never gets old.
Beth, I've heard this song myriad times since it was released and was always haunted by how beautifully tragic it is, but the first time I heard it after my wife died, 7 years ago, it absolutely CRUSHED me and I haven't been able to listen to it since without breaking down. So.... here I am crying with you, and I hope you never have to experience losing a partner prematurely. Thank you for your always thoughtful input and analysis of so many great songs.
I lost my wife 3 1/2 years ago so I know what you are going through Barry. May the God of all comfort, comfort you as well. Likewise, I can't listen to or sing Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" without breaking down. Losing the love of your life is devastating for the surviving partner but having someone to share love with is so special. I'm reminded that it's better to have loved and lost than to not have loved at all. I would hope Beth could find that special person to share her life with as we have done.
There is a section of this video that begins with Kate and Tim sitting down to a dinner and transitions to her falling ill, moving to the car, arriving at a hospital, and being carried inside and it is one seamless cut -- absolutely unbelievable video work! Her skill in storyboarding and shooting this video is phenomenal! And the songwriting and singing even more so!
This song is a great example of how mature and singular Kate is as a songwriter. To capture these nuanced emotions from the male perspective and yet still have it feel universal to all genders is quite an impressive feat. And on top of that her emotive vocal performance shows why she's such a brilliant vocalist.
My favourite song by Kate Bush, a truly beautiful and haunting piece of music. We should also not gloss over the fact that she was championed by another legend of British music culture, a certain David Gilmour of Pink Floyd ❤😊
This is timeless. Kate was an uncompromising artist of such vision and talent and I've yet to hear her match and doubt I will in this life. I enjoyed your reaction to this and I'm so glad this still resonates with so many people. Have a lovely day, and live it to the full. ❤
I've found one of the most stunning variations in her voice to be the beginning of "Night of the Swallow." You only need about 21 seconds to hear it. And the Celtic influence with pipes and melody are right out there in the forefront.
This is an absolutely beautiful and amazing piece of music! I actually first heard it performed by the singer Maxwell. He does a beautiful cover. However, now that I've heard the original and understand the full meaning, it's even more touching. I enjoyed your thoughtful comments Beth. They were touching as well. Thank you!❤
I can't imagine a world without Kate Bush's music. She's a bloody genius.. If you like the Celtic influence you should take a look at The Sensual World next.
That is my favorite album of hers!! I always clocked a Celtic influence and adored that about that album but I actually didn't know till just now that her mother was Irish.
Something to be said when this song still hits me the same way it did when I first heard it. Love this song and so glad you presented it today. Her lyric and composition and her visual together are just so powerful it is so overwhelming!!
This song makes me cry intensely, because I miss my Maternal Grandmother so much. Her death (a week after my Maternal Grandfather's death to the deadly Coronavirus in 2021) utterly devastated me. It broke my heart and I haven't been the same since. RIP Grandfather Leslie and Grandmother Irene 😢😢😢😢😢
I just love your beautiful and intricate analyses. I grew up with Kate Bush, so it's interesting to hear a description of how she's using her unique voice. I've not seen /heard this song played for many years and I cried with you. Thank you for reviving it for me and helping me hear it with new ears and appreciation appreciation
You are so right about the Celtic influence, her mother was Irish and she uses alot of Irish instrumentation in her music as well as having covered a lot of traditional Irish folk songs.
Great reaction to a great artist and an iconic song! Whenever my wife or I have to leave home for work (or any other reason) we always say 'I love you' regardless of moods or situation, love is above all other things, and this song is so much about regret when it may be too late! Keep the reactions coming please Beth.
Kate singing + Beth reacting = Emotional trip guaranteed ❤ I'm always deeply moved by the depth of her performances. It's second to none. Thanks, Beth!
This reaction video will probably receive fewer views than average for you, Beth. And that's a disgrace. Thank You for covering such a beautiful song and artist. I'd hit the "Like" button 1,000 times if I could ✨👍!
This video is one of the finest ever produced. Her images and the idea of singing from the man's point of view is amazing. It brings a tear. And yes the closing of the piano lid is devastating.
This song is without question the most important & expressive song . When you lose someone. The song reaches deeply to love you feel now & always will ,it’s an exceptional song . One on a million
The thing I learnt a lot of is that the lyrical matter...actually matters a lot to the song's strength. There's a bunch of songs like this. She's an astonishing artist in every single way but this song really grabs me and particularly as a parent. Songs I really like Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me it's not just the technique but the lyrical matter that just jet propels the song. It's the same here. This is, yet again, another example of Kate's brilliance is that the song, apparently, is written from the man's POV in a child birth situation. It's just incredible that she approached the song in this way and just yet again cements her as a singular artist in every way imaginable.
I love Kate Bush since 1980. And this song gets me every single time since its release in 1989. Music and lyrics can make you cry, but in a good and healing way. At least to me. It's heartwarming, to see you feel the same. Not that I want to see you cry in particular, don't get me wrong! But it's a comforting sign of loving music and people. ♫♪♪♫♪ Thank you for picking that song. ♥
Pure genius .. writing profound music from 12 /13 years old (man with the child in her eyes) No words now just tears. I’m so grateful I grew up with her … so grateful
There's a generosity of spirit in Bush's voice, and it's rare to hear a song written and performed by a woman that is fully given over to compassion for men.
I feel old. Kate hit the charts with her unique style in my youth. A deep impact, not just the music but the visuals. The head mic came to solve her need to sing and dance freely at the same time. An all round creative artist.
I think if this song doesn't bring you to tears, you're not fully human yet.. I admire her so much, she's everything that a true artist should be - she uses immense skill to express deeply personal emotions, making it universal
First heard this song in the movie "She's Having a Baby," played during a very poignant scene. The artist Maxwell also did a phenomenal version of this song - surprising to hear it sung by a man. Great reaction. 🙂❤
I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. This song makes me cry at exactly the point it made you cry. The combination of the emotion contained in the lyrics, her voice and melody is just perfection.
It's a gorgeous song and as always Kate's voice is magnificent. It just reaches right into your chest and rips your heart out. What a talent. On the Celtic thing, her mother was Irish and Kate and her brothers grew up with Celtic folk music. It features heavily across her catalogue, often with her brothers playing the traditional Irish folk instruments.
I love this song! First heard this song at the end of (believe it or not) a comedy called "She's Having A Baby", and the scene had equal gravitas to this video.
Kate Bush what a legend! This song/video has always really got to me, the emotion in this song is 2nd to none. Also as you prob know this hit song and hit album it came off of: Sensual World was recorded in her home studio in Kent in Welling. My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked South East London in Plumstead know. And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath, Welling, Dartford, Swanley etc, on our bikes- He some times gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + some times said hello to Hannah as well as Kate. Her mum Hannah sometimes did us a massive jug of Orange squash which we drank in the garden + memories I will always cherish 😊 Yea some of her songs sound Irish as her mum Hannah was from Ireland before moving to Essex with Robert then Kent. So proud she came from Kent like me 🤘🏻
Kate's musical narrative is unbelievable....timeless.....like literary classics....totally stand alone....the word brilliant totally understates her talents.
I don't remember you trying to interpret the songs all the time.. very appropriate that this one drew it out.. i lost my mum, and i die with love for my wife, so I get a small idea of my dad's pain, and imagine future pain and so on and so on and I just crack up into pieces.. my girl's unique and precious
That closing of the piano ... when I saw Johnny Cash caress the lid of his closed piano at the end of "Hurt", I was instantly reminded of the end of this Kate Bush video. So many worlds apart, but that raw emotion still the same.
I love everything about this song! It cuts so deep emotionally and was performed with such mastery. How amazing are the backing vocals by the Trio Bulgarka?! What a stroke of genius for Kate to feature them on this song and others. Thank you Beth for reacting so honestly to this brilliant song ❤️
Kate Bush is a one-of-a-kind genius - I've been hooked since I first saw her Wuthering Heights video one Saturday morning when I was a student, and have loved her music ever since. This song is one of her best, among many other great songs; it's simplicity is one of the things that makes it so effective, and combined with the video it's a work of tremendous emotional heft. Not surprised at your reaction, Beth - it does that to many of us!
Sending ❤ and hugs for you and this reaction video. Kate Bush is amazing, your reaction was so pure, loved it. (and of course I'm listening to your single, looking forward to the album!)
Dear Beth, You have such a beautiful and accessible understanding of music and the voice. Thank you for sharing yourself in the ways that you do. Thank you for your beauty, warmth, enthusiasm, and most importantly, your vulnerability. It's lovely to witness!
This is one of my favourite songs and performances. I first heard it in the film "She's Having a Baby" back in 1988 and the scene it's in is just as emotional as this video, which is excellent. This song pulls at my heartstrings every time I listen to it. Thanks for the analysis.
I think I may have asked you to do this a long time ago. I am 66 and I have heard a lot of music but this may be the best song I have ever heard. I cry every time too.
Hi thanks for this. Your reaction is very similar to mine and that of many people who encounter this song - it is beautiful but breaking. This song is perfect. Kate Bush has given us quite a few genuinely great songs/ But among them she has given us songs that transcend even the term 'greatness' and this is one of those songs. The story behind it is well enough known about her writing 'This Woman's Work' essentially to order, for a movie, to match footage that had already been shot, and seeking to capture the inner turmoil of a man coming to terms with the life and death crisis that a woman (and her unborn baby) is facing. And she does it stunningly. But the other thing about this song is that it was deliberately written to tear your heart out, and once you hear, if it does get inside you, then the longer you live and more often you hear it, rather than becoming desensitized to or acclimatized to it, it actually affects you more and more as the years pass and you encounter more and more crises yourself. Brandon Flowers of "The Killers" said of this song: “It’s one of the most powerful pieces of music that I’ve encountered, […] now that I’m older, it just sticks with me. It’s perfect […] It just affects me.” Since you mentioned her Celtic side it would be really cool to get you analysis of some of her overtly Celtic influenced songs: Her achingly beautiful, completely unaccompanied rendition of 'My Lagan Love' 'Night of the Swallow' 'The Jig of Life' Then there is her Irish Gaelic rendition of 'Mna na hEireann' Thanks again. I really enjoyed that.
Hi and thanks for this. I think 1/2 Irish on her mother's side might be a better way to describe her background, but there was a definite Celtic influence that she drew upon particularly in the music she listened to in early life and early influences, that leaned quite a bit on Irish traditional music, instruments etc, but also drew upon a Scottish influence through her love of artists like Ewan MacColl (born in England but to two Scottish parents).
The most accurate statement ever: "and once you hear, if it does get inside you, then the longer you live and more often you hear it, rather than becoming desensitized to or acclimatized to it, it actually affects you more and more as the years pass". You don't need new encounters though, just need to think of those you love most.
I swear I was just typing into the comment section that I adore your analysis but sometimes I miss your heart … and suddenly you started to show your tears! Thanks so much! I adore your analysis… I can learn so much about myself!
I can't even say how happy I am that you highlighted this song...from the first time I heard it (in the 80's!!!) it has been the saddest, most evocative song I've ever heard...
I just recently saw your reaction to this beautiful heart wrenching song. My wife and I are dealing with a very serious health issue she is going through and like yourself, though I've seen/heard this song many times before seeing you tear up just made me do the same.
Wow, as yout, his one grabs me by the throat every time again. But seeing you break really made it much tougher to sit through until the end.... but I made it. Your information about her choices in technique are wonderful. Thank you for that. For your information, you mentioned she wrote Wuthering Heights without having read the book. This is incorrect. The thought of writing the song came from a moment much earlier in time when she walked in on her family watching an episode of the TV series, where Cathy stood outside the window, trying to get in (as a ghost). This image was so strong, it stayed in her memory. When Kate years later wanted to write the song, she first read the book. And this is Kate at her best. When having an idea for a song, based on any reality, she makes sure she knows all about the ins and outs and facts of that reality, before sitting down to pen down a lyric. As you can tell, Kate is an artist I admire and respect so much. Mainly because of her sincere and serious handling of her craft. Nothing she creates comes by chance. The first ideas however do.
It’s the intricate complexity of her vocals that I really key in on. There’s so much going on with it that not noticeable at first. I’ve listened to Deal with God, on headphones about 300 times and still hear something new. I listen to The 9th Wave quite often as well.
A very touching song made even more impactful by the visual image she has created. Like you Beth, this song is difficult to listen to in the context of its imagery. I lost my wife 3 1/2 years ago and my "trigger song of tears" is Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now". I love to sing it but can never make it through the first verse without crying. Having someone to love and share your life with is magical. By the same token, when that person passes it is immensely difficult but love triumphs over loss even if it seems impossible at first. Thank you for allowing tears to again enter your studio. We love you for it.🥰
..."bitter sweet sorrow and dreams through talented singing and performance" in that song I would say 😌Her "Moving", and ofcourse the "Wuthering heights" and the great numerous covers of it are epic, like many of her other songs 🤘😊👍🎉
Kate Bush is an absolute genius. One of the most original voice in music, as both a singer and a songwriter. Not to mention director, choreographer and everything else she does.
Couldn't agree more. She's a complete artist. I only started listening to her music recently and have been blown away ever since.

Kate's most Powerful recording hands down
I have always believed that this song is, hands down, the saddest, most poignant lamentation ever written. The video just amps up the loss and grief to a level that's almost too much to bear. One of Kate's many moments of perfection.
So true. Mazzy Star's Into Dust is similar in its poignant lamentation but instead is regarding relationships.
It hurts.
Kate is a national treasure and I’m a burly 53 year old grown man and this song makes me cry every time .
tears here too, also goosebumps from first to last tone... something only Kate Bush has accomplished ever for me...
Kate Bush sings and your soul listens. She is an incredible artist, musician & performer. Thanks for the beautiful, emotional reaction. ❤
Perfect description of Kate’s artistry.

It actually always reminds me of his role in Notting Hill, where there is also a moment of him carrying his wife.

Kate is in a league of her own, I fell in love the first time I heard her voice, and that was decades ago ❤
This song moves me every time I hear it! Got some wet eyes again... One of (if not the) masterpiece(s) of Kate Bush's work!
This is really beautiful. Cloudbusting kate bush cover band coming to my town soon cant wait to see them.and they cover this epic masterpiece.
Is she Dame Kate Bush? If not should she should be. My number one go to musician singer all my life. Genius for sure. ❤
When you said: "Oh, I'm going", I was already gone. Happens to me every time I hear this song and I love it. Might be my favourite Kate Bush song.
This song kills me because it was in the Christmas special for the TV show The Extras.
Super sad pathos stuff.
My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked South East London in Plumstead
know.
Her mum Hannah sometimes did us a massive jug of Orange squash which we drank in the garden + memories I will always cherish 😊
Yea some of her songs sound Irish as her mum Hannah was from Ireland before moving to Essex with Robert then Kent.
So proud she came from Kent like me 🤘🏻
Kate's musical narrative is unbelievable....timeless.....like literary classics....totally stand alone....the word brilliant totally understates her talents.
This song was specifically composed by Kate Bush for one of the most sensitive scenes of the movie "She's Having a Baby"
I don't remember you trying to interpret the songs all the time.. very appropriate that this one drew it out.. i lost my mum, and i die with love for my wife, so I get a small idea of my dad's pain, and imagine future pain and so on and so on and I just crack up into pieces.. my girl's unique and precious
when you got emotional at the part when she sings (I should be crying but i just can't let it show) it punched me in the gut too. 😢😢
Kate is a great piano player as well.
Sending ❤ and hugs for you and this reaction video.
Kate Bush is amazing, your reaction was so pure, loved it.
(and of course I'm listening to your single, looking forward to the album!)
Gets me every time too, Beth. She’s phenomenal. ‘Night of the Swallow’ has a fantastic Celtic feel to it, I’d definitely recommend this! 🥰
Another classic from Kate.
Dear Beth,
You have such a beautiful and accessible understanding of music and the voice. Thank you for sharing yourself in the ways that you do.
Thank you for your beauty, warmth, enthusiasm, and most importantly, your vulnerability. It's lovely to witness!
What a lovely message. Thanks so much for your kindness!
You crying made me cry! 💔 Great video!
Brandon Flowers of "The Killers" said of this song:
“It’s one of the most powerful pieces of music that I’ve encountered, […] now that I’m older, it just sticks with me. It’s perfect […] It just affects me.”
Since you mentioned her Celtic side it would be really cool to get you analysis of some of her overtly Celtic influenced songs:
Her achingly beautiful, completely unaccompanied rendition of 'My Lagan Love'
'Night of the Swallow'
'The Jig of Life'
Then there is her Irish Gaelic rendition of 'Mna na hEireann'
Thanks again. I really enjoyed that.
and that she's from an Irish family as well. A large, very musical Irish family :-)
Kate Bush was born in Bexleyheath. Literally down the road from me. Can't believe such an angelic voice was born here.
Thanks for this VERY moving reaction.
I can't even say how happy I am that you highlighted this song...from the first time I heard it (in the 80's!!!) it has been the saddest, most evocative song I've ever heard...
I’ve always loved this song but after two difficult births, it hits hard❤
I’m not crying…I went with you!😭fabulous song…loved your description ✨💕
Eventually this song and video undoes me. Every single time.
odds are fifty fifty that i will cry listening to this song.
"Give me these moments back . . give them back to me . . give me that little kiss . . give me your hand"
We love you for it.🥰
Kate Bush has been my favorite female artist since 1979. This is why.
Wow just washing this video as I recently turn into a massive Kate Bush fan xd And definetly gona shake out your music too!! Cool!
..."bitter sweet sorrow and dreams through talented singing and performance" in that song I would say 😌Her "Moving", and ofcourse the "Wuthering heights" and the great numerous covers of it are epic, like many of her other songs 🤘😊👍🎉
