  • In a defence of the Halo TV series I attempt to articulate my overall opinion of the show while simultaneously trying to shine some reason on the more vocal and unsubstantiated criticisms.
Fully aware I run the risk of the ire of the "True Halo Fans," I have decided to summarize the majority of my complaints against the complaints thrown at what realistically isn't that bad a of TV show.
Season 2 had already released while I was editing this and now we've seen some clear improvements let me know what you think in the comments!
    Cheers!

Could talk about this for hours as i have been in this from the start. To make a very long conversaion short. Two things: 1st - when writers have to take a thing and make it work for something else, they do have to adapt. But they went too far with how they wanted it and didn't pay their best to their already existing fan base.
2nd - the story writers just really aren't that good, the effects are good, action(though lacking in the 1st season) is good, the people writing the story are like soap opera people trying to write Die Hard, it just doesnt work.
On a side note, i thought it was cool as hell to see MC fight and slice up the elite without his armor, just proves he is even more badass.

If they adopted Combat Evolved story they could’ve made it similar to that of a silent movie for the A plot line with Chief and Cortana exploring the ring and discovering the flood. Then you have your plot B being Sergeant Johnson, Captain Keys, Chips Dubbo, and Jenkins. Then plot C being fireteam raven.

I hope the show does really well, and that encourages a studio to make a massive trilogy. That’s equivalently awesome as lord of the rings, and a lot more faithful to the actual story of halo. A silver timeline is an excuse to take completely unrelated scripts and characters written for a completely different property and superimpose them onto a different property that has more of a chance to receive funding.
Exactly how they took a failed YA (young adults) novel written for 12 yo girls about 2 sisters in high school that have problems at school and living with their father because of a deceased mother. They were unable to get funding to make a tv show so they grabbed the Resident Evil license and made the slightest of alterations and Yala, you get The Resident Evil tv show that we got a couple of years ago.
So if you're willing to just accept anything as long as they throw the license of franchise you like on top of it, then you're in luck because that is exactly what the Halo tv show is.

The biggest problem with this adaptation is that there was already an excellent story, told in the books, (the first few written by Eric Nylund), which expand on the game.
If the only source material was the Xbox console games, then the TV show could be forgiven for inventing new characters and a more detailed plot, because the background story in these games was only intended to provide a context/motivationn for the action focused gameplay.
Unfortunately, the TV show inexplicably ignores the existing novels, opting instead to create a new timeline, only to give us a story that's inferior in many ways to the books.
Masterchief needlessly removing his helmet is just another symptom of the disrespect/disregard the show writers have for the source material. As you and others pointed out, the Mandalorian manages to keep his helmet on for the entire first series, yet his characterization doesn't suffer as a result. In this case, the issue isn't that John removes his helmet, but that it isn't considered to be, and treated as, an important moment, which should only be teased (as it is in the game) until the reveal is justified. Why does this matter? Because it's an important part of the game and an adaptation should recognize this by also treating it as such.
Similarly, race/sex swapping of existing characters shouldn't be an issue (unless you're racist/sexist), but significantly altering the role they play and their eventual fate IS problematic, much more so than inventing new ones, (such as Makee and Soren) whose existence is a mystery, that potentially introduces inconsisteces, which the show must now explain.
It was unreasonable to expect an adaptation which slavishy adhered to the source material, but most fans were hoping for a story that was, at least loosely, based on the books and game which inspired it, making it recognisable as Halo.
Unfortunately, this show fails to do this and consequently isn't regarded by those fans (including myself) as a faithful adaptation.
It might wear the same clothes, but underneath is a different person. It steals liberally from the source material, but it's NOT Halo, which is frustrating, vexing and disappointing.

The objective problem with this show (almost everyone misses this) has nothing to do with the Silver Timeline or CGI or Kwon etc. it's because the writing is cliche ridden and immature - the cliche of the soldier going rouge, or the object which does plot convenient things when it's touched (like shutting down the UNSC in S1E1). Events occur then are forgotten about (the aforementioned MC going rogue). Also the melodrama - this is the military, you don't need to shout, if a lower rank disobeys your orders they are delt with without screaming like a dysfunctional married couple. Or the tribe on Reach which gets glassed in S2E1 - they served no purpose to the story other than providing some extra drama, because apparently the MC combating sword elites (which was a cool scene BTW) isn't dramatic enough. This show is low IQ writing - a perfect fit for the masses these days to spend 10ish hours of their life which they couldn't think to do anything else with.
And notice how I'm not even a fan of the games? And how I didn't mention MC's helmet, or too many female characters, or the race swapping or not sticking to story from the games? Because you don't need to know anything about Halo to know this show is mediocre at best and trash at worst.

For me, its not that its "not quite what I wanted". I expected deviations from the games and books for sure. The issue is the deviations are extreme. Dissociating from key story aspects and character traits like Master Chief being stoic, calculated, & selfless for Humanity (and yes, not showing his face hardly, or the helmet being his face) to an emotional guy who loses his temper regularly, almost never has a helmet on at all, and now claps cheeks right out the gate in season 1. Captain (Admiral?) Keyes is race-swapped and dies before even seeing a Halo at all. Fall of Reach occurs without Chief even having armor now? WTF? Things like this seem lazy and disrespectful to what came before. Its a bit too much for me to rationalize away as necessary for TV adaptation. Seems more like laziness or disregard to me.

      Excellent comment!
My response tho is I don’t think most of that seems particularly egregious. My negatives are mostly related to bizarre script choices, like when chief was about to pulverize Halsey to death, and yes turning John and Mackees relationship romantic was stupid.
But the way I see it season 2 has had very few of those situations. Most of the other changes you listed do seem to have deliberate and well thought out intention behind them. Not liking them is just a matter of personal taste. Which as I say in the video we are all perfectly entitled to.

Exactly. I think the show, even for what it’s going for, definitely makes a lot of mistakes. Mostly in season one, but season two is a good show. Period. That is not subjective. If people hate this show, it’s probably because they are comparing it to halo in the novels and the game and have an expectation for what they wanted and it’s not being met which is unfair. I get it because as the name halo, but looking at the show, objectively, season two is a good show. I see stupid defenses of the show even though I see way more stupid criticisms of the show and I see good criticisms of the show occasionally but it’s mostly just, he’s not in his armor. I kind of wish they just put him in his armor, so these people would shut up. Like you said, the comparison to LOTR works because the movies told a good story with talent. Halo fans wouldn't mind these radical changes to canon if the story was consistently compelling. I think there's an argument to be made that their OC's like Kwan and Ma'kee get more screentime and importance than core Halo characters. If they were truly interested in establishing the world of Halo, making OC's make sense, but it's risky if these OCs are not interesting or well written.

@@MTJDisorderSorry to be "that guy", but the funny part is that Soren isn't even an OC. He was introduced in the books as a failed Spartan who was deformed. So a lot of book fans recognized the name and naturally started making comparisons. Honestly, they probably should have actually used an OC character in his place since there were so many unnamed Spartans & Spartan candidates.
One of my minor gripes about the show is that they use the names of book characters (Reth, Soren, etc.), but they are depicted completely different. It just seems like a odd decision since only book fans are going to recognize the names and chances are, they'll range between confused and pissed about the changes.

Introducing original characters isn't a problem, as long as the treatment of existing characters remains faithful to the source material.
Kwan Ha doesn't seem popular with viewers, but she does add to the Haloverse. Soren does too, albeit much less so, and his early departure from the SPARTAN program raises a lot of questions, such as why Halsey allowed him to escape as a child, when he was a HUGE security risk...
It's unlikely that the Halo itself will make an appearance until Season 3, so at least 4-6 seasons are planned, which means there's plenty of time to introduce new characters later on.

100 percent think the Master Chief never showing his face is part of the character. Sure he takes off his helmet but we do not need to see it. The connection that we dont know his face helps our minds commit to the Master Chief, not the man behind the mask. If they eventually due to plot or story felt compelled to finally have to show Master Chief without his helmet and armour it would be a development. To just show him non stop is a complete contradiction to the character already portrayed in media for 20 years. Your last point throws me for a loop. We've given the halo franchise a chance for 3 games so giving the movie a chance after bastardizing beloved characters in its first season is pretty nonsensical. Personally I did not watch the first or second season becouse I like to wait for all opinions and make an informed decision. From what I see they bastardized a lot of key plauers for the sake of minor plot changes. I'm not saying the story doesn't have its good. Rather that you can't take beloved characters with distinct personalities and change them expecting long lasting fans to enjoy that. I was originally hoping that it would tell a story about other spartans and just cameo or reference the cool things chief did. This simple move would've allowed a lot of creative liberties without alienating the fanbase. Still, while I disagree with your opinion, I do respect you.

But I will say again using the lord of the rings example, the characters are not the same as their book counterparts. Aragorn in the book, is confident, cocky and very much devoted to reclaiming the throne, whereas movie Aragorn, is uncertain, reluctant and apparently chosen exile?
Characters undergo changes all the time when adapted from the source material. Doesn’t mean you have to like it sure but with those films people got over it quickly because they were just so damned good. If the Halo show isn’t up to your standards you don’t have to justify it. Personal taste doesn’t need an explanation.

@MTJDisorder I'm not into lotr so I have no comment on that. I also specifically avoided stating that changing the core characters would create a bad story. I just feel they didn't do the characters, justice.
The issue here isn't that the story is bad or that they even used the core characters. Its that they both made (imo) basterdizations of the characters I love, the story is mediocre at best, and they wanted to attack the fans having justifiable issues with their series, they don't want to take small doses of criticism like the "helmet issue." Honestly I can still go on. There is just so many things that the show does wrong that I can't really enjoy it, especially when even its good scenes aren't even that great. Again, remove the core characters that honestly didn't have to be there like mc and keys and just play the the show through that spartan team they have. Some of the better scenes I've seen were litterally just that team kicking ass.

when he took his helmet off,, it was a really big deal in the show. They took him off duty, even though he was the most effective weapon. He took it off AFTER he disobeyed an order for the first time in his career (which started when he was 6) , and had never done so before then. Yes, he took it off early in the series, but the first episode was already a major event, because no one even knew that kind of an artifact could exist, and suddenly it was the key to surviving the covenant. Even though the chief took out his emotion chip ,, the artifact gave him emotions despite it, .. it's not as though he was ever going to take it off otherwise.

What's incredible is that even though canonically the Human Covenant war lasted 27 years and even when you take out the events of Halo Wars and the trilogy, you're still left with 20+ years of an interstellar war that the writers could have easily used to write compelling stories. The stories of the regular marines, civilians struggling for survival, the heroism of the ODST troopers, the uneasy relationship of former insurrectionists with the UNSC both forced to put aside decades long enmity to fight a common enemy: so much compelling material could've been adapted if they'd bothered to familiarize themselves with the lore. They're so lazy that they had to create this nonsensical Silver timeline that was completely unnecessary. Even Halo Legends looks epic compared to this slop. The books could've been ignored if needed just like how Halo: Reach ignored the events of Eric Nylund's The Fall of Reach (incredible book and in some ways better than the game).

Im gonna be honest i thought Season 1 Sucked because of how doucey they made Master Chief and the writers insisting on putting him in a Nude every Episode, + the horrible Storytelling but i honestly have a Soft spot for Season 2, it didn't have a lot of Spartan Armor but it did tell a more grittier/Mature narrative that the games were telling. And Master Chief was a way more likeable character in Season 2, a lot of people aren't gonna agree with me but i would love to see a season 3 so they can flesh out the Flood a bit more and see Master Chief fight the Covenant more.

  • @Finger112

I pretty much agree (and I have been watching the show and watched both Season 1 and 2 and have played all of the Halo games), even though the show is vastly different that what were used to in the games. The main reason why the show for example, doesn't have a ton of action every episode, is because it cost a shit-ton of money to create these actions sequences. it is much cheaper for a show to have the downtime episodes with just the drama only. On top of this, another reason why the show runners don't want to recreate the videos games in a TV format is creativity and doing something new with it (and surprising us as well, oh boy any form of entertainment wants to surprise us as well and that has happened so far), if they just rehash the games in a TV series, what is the point of the Halo fans watching it then (they would start to get bored with it)? You will know exactly what will happen if they remade Halo Combat Evolved into an 8 episode TV series, it would be so boring actually to watch, and the constant action would blow the TV budget plus there would be like hardly any character development because you need way more dialogue in a TV series than what a video game can give (because in a video game, the constant play time is giving you all the attention with a controller), you may as well just play the game or watch a UA-cam walkthrough. Both forms of media have its challenges of how they have to be made, but Halo originally was never conceptualized as a TV series, so it has to be rethought differently.

One thing people so conveniently forget is that Chief from the games is a stand in that you the player are supposed to superimpose yourself onto. We are all our own versions of Chief. It makes sense that they would make him different as you can't portray the individual personalities of every fan. The core tenants of his in game "personality" are still there but it needs substance to be a proper character. This is not to say that people cannot immensely relate to him. The biggest reason I fell in love with Pablo's Chief is that I can greatly relate to him. The abuses he suffered under those who control him. The chemically induced emptiness, apathy, and lack of connection. The emotional awakening when he begins to pull the wool from his eyes. The return of the bold, loving, and dutiful Chief that we all know and love. It all makes for a greatly compelling character that many people, especially those who are neurodivergent or suffered abuse, can relate to. It's a truly beautiful development that I wish more people would stop to consider.

This isn't just a "this isn't what I wanted" issue. I gave this show the benefit of the doubt and gave it several chances. The problem is it deviates so far from its source material that it reads very far from what its interpreting and at least gives off the impression that the showrunners don't care about this IP. Changes were expected when adapting the world. At least from me. What is unforgivable is what we got for characters in not only nothing like their game counterparts for the most part, but also doesn't give us new characters that can properly fill in their place or properly root for. The Master Chief is a bumbling man-child for example. Forget that he is meant to be THE Master Chief for a moment, how am I meant to root for a character like that who gets their way and doesn't have consequences for their bad actions? Also, the point about the actor's face is not the reason for my distaste in the helmet removal. I wouldn't care who he was and/or if he was really ugly under the helmet. The main problem for me is how often he does so and this insistent idea that his face HAS to be visible most of the time. It should have had at least a little time before removing it the first time, and it should have been a very rare thing to see in general. Darth Vader didn't show his face until moments before his death. Several movies/shows have done characters who communicate well through their voice and body movements. Yes, my distaste in this show IS amplified by my distaste of how the Halo IP has been handled as a whole for a while, but this show is also very mid at best in my opinion and does not represent the world of the IP well either. if I wasn't a fan of Halo, this would be a random C tier si-fi knock off that I'd only end up watching part of because it was left of the TV in the background of a party or something. That pains me even more because of how much money was invested in this and what we got as a result. People with way less money, or even the low, low price of "FREE" have made faithful adaptations and even their own stories within the world that actually fit established cannon. The "Silver Timeline" is just a lazy excuse because they couldn't come up with a way to tell a story in the established timeline. If they would have just done something like a 'what if' type series where things are different because 'A' or 'B' and made an interesting story out of it, I don't think this show would have gotten this much hate. Instead, they made a mockery out of the IP and the hero character that fans love while still calling it ""The HALO TV Show"". Newcomers will either see this and then find out that the games are NOTHING like this, or they will most likely go, "Wait, *this* is that Halo series that those people like?" and might even write off the whole IP because of it. The "keep his helmet on!" is just one of the easiest critiques to make that **might** make the show just a tiny bit better, but ultimately, its also just the lowest hanging fruit to voice anger through that other people can 'get' much easier and faster than explaining out everything that's wrong with this show. Some people also do just not want the helmet to come off ever on screen, which, I also think is a valid take.

The games don’t have everything that’s included in the books. I will say this the games followed the books the show could’ve done the same thing like the books instead of just giving us a bunch of shamans that don’t exist. Then we have two other characters. One of them shouldn’t even belong in the covenant at all and last, and least there’s the most hated of all time still is not canon Kwan.🙄🙄🙄 Plus Madrigal that we see in the show shouldn’t even be inhabited by humanity right now, considering the covenant glassed it decades before the timeline 2552.

  • @augury2699
    @augury2699 8 місяців тому +3

I'll have to disagree on certain points. Even if prioritizing the world over the games, there is a lot of mistakes that were made, that come across as a lack of knowledge of the world and characters. Halsey throughout season 1 is treated as a cut and dry bad guy, when she is a morally grey character with quite a bit of nuance to her. The over prioritization of Master Chief is another thing that I feel was wrong. If you want to approach this as an expansive world, then you can't single in on one particular character in this way, more so with this franchise. Then there are things like how SII's act and are overall portrayed.
Halo if one thing stood above the rest in its theme then it would be " *Human Resilience* " and that is best shown in how desperately they fight in spite of the overwhelming odds. To approach this franchise as a more expansive world beyond the games stories. There was a better way to do so and it's all right there in the lore to match the theme. Starting with just the Spirit of Fire and Harvest, people probably would've even forgiven blending these two events together in favor of showing the desperate fight that Humans are trapped in inside this story. The story of the Spirit of Fire and Harvest in the first season would've served as a good background for future seasons setting up all of the main conflicts.
The elaboration on the Spartan II project should've been slowly disseminated throughout the series as a backdrop to the losses suffered on Reach and beyond, if they really wanted to play to the more tragic nature of the Spartan II's and even the III's. Instead of adding in an unknown like Kwan Ha and I'll even throw Soren in here, they would've been better served following ODST's or Marines. The Spartans should've been portrayed as a kind of guiding light for Humanity, more like Idols(In a worship sense) than fellow soldiers, maybe even be met with a bit of apprehension.
You more or less hit the nail on the head with the Helmet argument I think, and the addressing of that issue only adds to the anger and disconnect between the two sides there.
Just if the reasoning is going to be that they needed the space to approach the wider world of Halo, then they really should've worked to take in the wider world and pull the pieces that truly encapsulated the themes and most familiar parts of the universe, while also flexing their creativity to offer a familiar originality to the work they did on the show. It's not so much that it isn't "what I want, so I don't like it" so much as there is a certain lack of care for the very universe and story being adapted and the problems are more often than not easily rectified if not avoidable.

Him removing his helmet was removing part of his character. For example the Book of Boba Fett which was an enjoyable show but did assassinate that mans character. Boba Fett was always known as this ruthless killing bounty hunter that would stop at nothing to get his job done, at the center of it he never removed his helmet. This gave us a sense of this is a dangerous man that shows no emotion and is to not be toyed with. What is he thinking behind that helmet? What is his face or emotion. Having him take off his helmet in the series really devalued his cores as a character. Now we know MC is not a ruthless or devoid of morales person murdering for money like Boba but part of chiefs character and who he is as an icon is the fact that he never removes his helmet and is this in a sense faceless hero and savior of humanity. When I did watch the show and when he did remove his helmet I was like bruh I dont think I can watch this on top of the human being on high charity. The show writers even said they did not play the video games on top of CGI being pretty horrendous. The show is a dumpster fire I can't personally get behind it all.

The writing is poor, the CGI is awful, there are many plot holes and 'pointless' narratives which make zero influence on the story, and the whole show just feels 'meh' to me. "Is the show really that bad?"
Yes, yes it is. It's the worst game adaptation media in recent memory, and I'll die on the hill that it's the worst of all-time. It does nothing but spit in the faces of the fans and on the IP of Halo, it adds a bunch of nonsense to a story that never needed it, and its second worst sin is that it's mind-numbingly fucking boring. The idea that one can get enjoyment out of this show, whether they're a fan or a random person ignorant to Halo, is baffling to say the least.
Just to summarize some of the points made in this video:
    >"Not everyone hates it..." Yea, I don't exactly care about bots from Paramount or those who're literally mindless. Whether you're a fan or not, the show's objectively awful in every facet outside of CGI and props, both of which are really damn good. The acting ranges from awful to average, and the plot-lines are boring and stupid at best.
    >"Well, if we get more of the three bottom-tier action scenes in the first season, the show will be good." Those scenes were all comically bad, and the only way to redeem them was for guys on UA-cam to put the original music, sounds, and voices in it. The scenes were, at their absolute best, mindless slop that made little to no sense, and didn't even look visually great once you get past being stunned with something mildly entertaining, because the show is, again, really fucking boring.
    >"Master Chief removing his helmet isn't a big deal... I'm a real fan..." Bluntly, are you lying or stupid here? Pointing to a handful of instances across all of the games and a book where we see Chief's helmet not on his head, and where he rests essentially off-screen, isn't a goddamn argument. The reasons Bungie never showed John's face have been laid-out countless times before, it's for the player/viewer to use Chief as a canvas for themselves, there's a mystique around him in the IP that's got us to where we are now, and there's no great way to have a canonical face of Chief and have no issues. Literally everything the people with the show have said has been categorically retarded at best. They've done nothing but show their disdain for Halo and the fans, and their incompetence at their jobs. When people say, "Chief never keeping his helmet on ruins the show," they're not saying everything's fine if that was fixed, but they're saying the entire essence of the show being Halo is gone with that one decision, and they're completely right.
    >"It's just your opinion, you're not a critic..." The vast majority of people who, correctly, hate the show wouldn't say they know how to properly critique media (although the vast, vast, vast majority of that industry is filled with dipshits who think their IQ is 40 points higher than it actually is and hate normal people). This point doesn't even make sense or matter. I don't need to be some douchebag critic for Rotten fucking Tomatoes to have my opinion validated, my opinion already matters infinitely more than theirs, especially on this matter, because I actually know what I'm talking about.
    >"They're not wolves in sheep's clothing..." Either they're all really stupid and bad at their jobs, or all of that and they're evil. Pick one. When they say, "We made a Halo show without playing Halo," that's the ultimate red flag. You literally can't understand Halo and Master Chief without playing the games, I don't care if you've read every book four times over.
    >"They couldn't just start with the beginning of Halo CE... Look, they have so many of the original characters." They literally don't have any of the original characters you fucking muppet, that's part of the problem. John isn't John, neither Keyes are their real selves, Halsey ain't Halsey, Cortana sure as shit ain't Cortana. You can't murder someone, skin them, and then where their corpse as a skinsuit and say, "Well, I'm Bob now." No, you killed Bob, he doesn't exist.
Again, I have to ask, bluntly, are you stupid or lying in this video? None of what you said stands-up to the slightest bit of scrutiny, because the show's atrocious no matter what perspective you have. It's a disgraceful dumpster fire that should've had the people who proposed it to Xbox, Microsoft, 343, etc. tossed out the window of the meeting room. They could've easily, stupidly fucking easily, say, "We're going to make a different timeline that's 95% of the original lore, but gives us that 5% wiggle-room to work with. We're going to have a group of characters we follow, and we'll have cameos of Chief, Cortana, Johnson, etc. throughout the show." That's what they could've done, what they should've done. And get rid of the multiple plot-lines garbage. No one gives a fuck about Kwan, that Covenant broad, Soren's adventures (the character's fine most of the time, but I don't care about following his nonsense), etc. Give the people what they actually want, it's not that hard.

Q: Is it really that bad?
A: Yes, and worse. It's a travesty, that uses names and some aesthetics from Halo, but it respects no aspect of the lore or the franchise's fanbase. Just looking at how they handled Master Cheeks. The Chief is a super-soldier who denies his own humanity to throw himself wholly into his work, and is always in his armor, always ready for a fight, and he only lets his guard down when he's in a secure location, which makes it completely stupid when the show has him always removing his helmet in combat zones. But worse yet, the show even has him literally sleeping with the enemy. They also introduced a stupid emotion-restraining chip in the small of his back, and has him unreasonably emotional, contrary to the established character. The Chief always has the stoicism and professional poise that a real-world marine combat-veterans interact with respected superior officers. Look at Halo 4, or Infinite, when Chief is at his most emotional, yet he never loses composure. Master Cheeks is not the Chief.
But the worst part of it is that they end the series with "Cortana" body-snatching Master Cheeks to turn him into the super-soldier that the Chief already was.
And no aspect of the show is any better than the main character.

They might have made something passable if they'd followed the precedent of Foreword Unto Dawn, and Nightfall, to focus on new, non-Spartan characters for their emotional baggage, without tainting the established characters with traits that they don't have in canon, and bad decisions they'd never have made.

o real problema da serie, além de se afastar totalmente do material original, é a péssima escrita, o ritmo, os dramas, as escolhas estupidas dos personagens e plot que não faz sentido, a serie é so mais um exemplo dessa onda de series mal feitas dos últimos anos
