    blew my mind when you said that the aspect ratio only affects what you see on the screen or in the EVF. and that when you edit the photo in LR, you will see the rest of the data. I always set it to full because I didn't want to lose information that I couldn't get back. Now I can have some freedom to choose. Like if I want to frame for Instagram, I can choose 1:1 or 16:9 for wallpapers and still keep that extra data for things like different sized prints. Thanks!

    Roberto, I just want to thank you for your very down-to-earth, real-world (and very logical) explanations concerning how and why you've chosen the menu options you have on your R5. These are really, really helpful videos that will assist me greatly in getting the one I have on order, optimized right out of the box. Thanks again.

    I recently purchased the R6, and it so different to the 5D IV.
    Great information from Roberto about the menu system and explaining why he has changed some of the default setting.
    There are many videos about this out there, but this is a no-brainer. I have followed Roberto for years, he is a great photographer, educator and inspiration.

    Roberto, thank you SO MUCH for making this series of videos that explains the menus in detail. I have seen no other videos that comprehensively teaches what all the various settings in the menu system are for. These videos are long overdue. I found it very helpful and as soon as my R5 comes in, I will be ready to get it set up for the way I use my camera, thanks to you. Kudos! An option to setting cropping in the Red camera menu is in the orange menu C fn 4. "Add Cropping Information". You still get the border lines on the screen and veiw finder and there are a few more size options like 4:5 which perfectly matches an 8x10 print. When the image comes into Lightroom, it's cropped to the aspect ratio you set in the camera. But the entire uncropped image is available when you open the crop tool in Lightroom (and probably Camera RAW too). I setup my R5 this way and then added a setting in my import preset to crop to "original" so the entire frame is available to me as default since only a small portion of my work gets printed at 8x10. Both ways really help me to remember to leave enough space on the ends of a group portrait so the client can print at 8x10 if they want. It's a tough spot to be in when they can't!
    This detailed series has really been helpful in giving me creative ways to use all of the customization of the R5. Thanks. I just shot my first wedding with one and love just about everything about it. I

    Thanks for this series and all the time you put into it. It will save me time getting my R5 setup well for weddings.
    Regarding exposure simulation, that one setting you don’t use ( it has an aperture icon), that one enables simulation while you press the depth of field preview button. So it’s there in an instant when you want it.
    Regarding priority between focus and release in the AF settings, it’s not referring releasing focus. But releasing the shutter. I think what you’re telling the camera is “priority is to perfect focus before releasing the shutter” or “ trip the shutter as soon as the focus is close”.

    NOTE - You can't restrict shooting modes on the R6 (on either firmware 1.1 or 1.1.1). Odd that this would be an R5-only configuration, but there you go. Otherwise all the tips you offered in these videos work on the R6.
    I picked up another R6 (this one with grip) and just came through a triple-header all-R6 wedding weekend. The camera still blows me away and my previously beloved MarkIV's feel so 2016 by comparison. I went back and watched your menu configuration videos as this camera takes more to time and consideration to customize than a dSLR. Electronic shutter or mechanical? One shot or Servo? Face/eye track or single-point? We never had (or really used) these options before and assigning which button for which mode change is a refining process. After each event I change up one or two things. Adding the grip brought on other considerations (another button set, finger movements, etc).
    The game-changing paradigm here can't be overstated. To casually give posing instructions while shooting at ƒ1.4 or 1.2, knowing the lead eye will always be tack sharp feels like a dream. The shooter/subject relationship moves beyond "straighten your spine, throw your shoulders back" and you're able to calmly throw in "you really must be proud of your children today" and bingo, a new world of intimacy opens up ... because you know that shallowing shooting is going to be crazy sharp. YOU'RE at ease, so the clients are, too.
    It's a great time to be a photographer. Thanks for all your continuing inspiration.

  • @raywilliams6896

    Great video, Roberto. Thanks. One obscure piece of info that took me a while to unravel: At 19:16 you talk about the color space. If one selects Adobe RGB the file name prefix of the photographs changes. I had gone into the 'Tools' (Wrench) menu and changed my file name prefix to R6A_. However all my filenames started with _6A_ . Whatever I selected as a prefix, that _6A_ remained in the filename. Turns out that this is the result of selecting Adobe RGB in the Color Space. I changed it back to sRGB and thereafter the filenames started with my R6A_ prefix. Like you, I shoot in RAW so the sRGB or Adobe doesn't make a difference to me. Now.......in doing this research I learned that Canon sets a 4-character filename prefix as default and this default is different for every camera. Kinda neat if one submits photos to sites that are accepting photos from many sources: this prefix will be unique to your photos. And, yes, I know that it's easy to change filenames entirely by non-camera means! Anyway, just another bit of info. Keep the tutorials coming, please!

    • @raywilliams6896
      @raywilliams6896 3 роки тому

      In looking at what is displayed in this message the italicized 6A prefixes should have showed up as underscore-6-A-underscore (4 characters).

Just one comment, the second item under "Exposure Simulation" called "During" does not refer to during exposure, it refers to the depth of field preview button. ie. Normally you will see the Display option, but if you press the depth of field preview button it temporarily changes to Simulation option. I made the same mistake.

    I'm not sure crop mode affects distortion or compression. Crop mode merely changes field-of-view by cropping pixels in camera. It produces the same affect as cropping in post.

    • @RobertoValenzuela
      @RobertoValenzuela  3 роки тому

      Crop mode does not effect compression. It’s just a convenient way to get a different perspective with the same lens.

    • @djack41
      @djack41 3 роки тому

      @@RobertoValenzuela Correct. But about 12:20 in the video, you said crop mode can take a 70mm lens beyond 100mm and improve compression and distortion. The only advantage to crop mode would be to enlarge the subject which might aid precise focus. Otherwise, crop in post.

    Hi Roberto, I recently got the R6 and have watched your videos multiple times now. They were super helpful when I set up my camera. Now my question: I had it on 4:3 b/c you said not to worry, the whole pic will be imported into LR. However, that was not the case, all images showed full frame for a split second during import and then cropped to 4:3. What am I missing?

      Hi! Pachrian, that’s just a setting on Lightroom. It’s respecting the crop. It the actual file recorded on your memory card is the full file. Try opening it in Canon’s native raw procesador and you will see the full file.

    Amazing videos for sure! You've helped me understand my R6 way better. I do have a question, however on the 1.6 crop mode. Other than what you see in the VF, what's the point? You'd get the same thing by just cropping later.

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 3 роки тому

      it's really to help with framing. sure, you can leave it to full and then crop later. but sometimes, you'll realize that you didn't frame properly for a good crop. for example, Instagram has a 1:1 aspect ratio. If you set it to 1:1, you can easily frame your subject for that 1:1. And then with the "hidden" data, you can use that for other purposes like later cropping for a 16:9 screen or a 8x10 print. But if you shoot at FULL, you might accidentally frame it in a way that when you do your post 1:1 crop, it might cut off a background bush that you want to keep.

    Roberto, Your videos have been very helpful in guiding me through the R6 set up. One issue I have is when I am in the studio and shooting on Manual mode with studio lights the viewfinder is way too dark (ISO 125, 1/125, F-11). There is not enough ambient light in the studio to allow me to see my subject. I have played with the viewfinder brightness and consulted my Camera manual but this one issue still eludes me when shooting in the studio. When in Av mode in ambient light everything is good. Any insights?? Thanking you in advance.

      Hi Kip, the solution to your problem can be solved by turning the EXPOSURE SIMULATION "OFF" when shooting in studio. Turn it back "ON" when shooting outside. That's it. Thx for listening to the videos.

      Yes it will. I tried sigma 18-35 f1.8 and it switches automatically to 1.6 cropped, which is great. With older sigma, such as 8-16mm, you have switch manually, but it still works.

    Do lens aberration correction work on raw files, or just jpegs? If it works on raw files, is this something that I can integrate in my Lightroom workflow? In other words, is the information written on the raw file, and is Adobe able to extract that info? I usually apply lens profile corrections straight from Lightroom, but i'd love to be able to skip that step and have it done in-camera.

    • @RobertoValenzuela
      @RobertoValenzuela  4 роки тому +2

      I'm not 100% sure, but I do believe that the corrections are embedded in the RAW file and therefore, you can skip it on Lightroom. Plus, when you do it on camera, it is superior than any generic correction that raw editors could apply.

    Hi, Could you check Camara/Nº6/Intervalometer timer. I got a R6 and it not working properly, everything it looks ok on screen but in the end, secuences of photos are not in the card, just the first one. thanks

    • @RobertoValenzuela
      @RobertoValenzuela  4 роки тому

      I don't know what it could be, but just to eliminate the obvious, did you make sure to choose more than one photo in the Interval Timer settings? Just for kicks, choose these settings and try again: Interval: Choose every 10 seconds. No. of Shots: Choose 10. Try again after that.

    • @dbc97610

      Another UA-camr reported Intervalometer only shoots first photo if you use back button focus. Put focus on the shutter button as a workaround until Canon fixes this with a firmware update.
