  • I wanted to share with you how I setup my new Canon EOS R5 as a commercial studio photographer. My last camera was a 5DIV, so this video will take a deep-dive into the settings and features of the first Canon professional mirrorless camera and how it compares to its DSLR predecessor.
    Part II will focus on my video settings.

      John Gress It being a photography camera vs a 4K/8K utilization is the main reason for the purchase. However, I’m hoping that with a firmware update that pesky overheating issue (if actually a real thing), will be fixed. Regardless, I’m very excited to about the dynamic range, the 45mp, and IBIS! Just hope my laptop can take the MB!

    • @michaelbell75

      All Canon cameras can shoot in 4:3, even the Rebels. If you shoot portraits, 4:3 is great. I use it exclusively as most of my work is either for Instagram or for publications. 4:3 is ideal for both. No idea why so many portrait shooters shoot 3:2

    • @michaelbell75
      @michaelbell75 3 роки тому

      @@joshuadelawrence85 Yea, IG is 1:1 square format. Shoot in 4:3 (or 5:4 if your camera has it). You will get 95% of the photo on IG, just a little snip from the bottom (in portrait orientation) will be missing, but its far better than 3:2

    Great video and nice to see another 4:3 portrait shooter! Its the best aspect ratio for portraits IMO. Regarding your question about the EFCS, they are talking about f/1.2 lenses. My RP only has an EFCS and if Im shooting f/1.2 I have to watch my shutter speed outdoors on a sunny day. Once you hit 1/2000s, you will get ugly artifacts in you photo, like someone took an erase tool to parts of the background. Of course you can use a ND filter, but I rarely shoot at f/1.2 though. Im usually around f/2.8 and rarely go wider than f/2.2 You would be fine using EFCS with an f/2.8 lens or In studio.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 роки тому

      Thanks! I changed to overlaying 8x10 lines from the blue menus. Is the EFCS issue the shutter speed or the f-stop? I am really not sure what this shutter mode really gets you only than i think 1/250 f a second sync (if I remember correctly).

    It is possible to change your screen layout so that the electronic level appears when you turn the camera on, rather than need to cycle through to get to it. You can also add or remove certain items and control whether or not the histogram is displayed.

    I upgraded from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5, I love it!
    The only thing that has happened is I've received the *temperature warning* icon during at least three weddings I've shot, it happens on both EOS R5 bodies. It shows up after only a couple hours of casual shooting, no bursts or anything crazy, it happened before the ceremony. The only way to get around it has been to turn off the power when not actively using them.
    I'm mainly a photographer and I shoot video often but only 1080 at 24fps so I don't ever expect to have the camera shut down on me like some of the filmmakers do when they push the video capabilities to the limits.
    Do you tether via USB while you shoot in the studio? I've heard that people are having heat issues while shooting tethered but I haven't tested it yet.
    I plan to make a UA-cam video next month going into lots of detail on my transition from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5 bodies. It has been an interesting adjustment and my only regret is not going mirrorless sooner than I did.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 роки тому +1

      I too wish I had bought a mirror less sooner. I wonder if the new firm ware would help you.
      I was shooting tethered in my studio today for almost 5 hours and the camera was warm to the touch, but it didn't overheat. I realized part way through the day that I should change the screen/ viewfinder display to viewfinder (yellow "set up" 3) because there was no reason for the back of the camera to be on, which was kind of annoying since I have to have an custom button set somewhere to switch between the screen and the viewfinder.

    • @JaredRibic
      @JaredRibic 3 роки тому +1

      @@JohnGress I have the new firmware on one body and the original firmware on the other and will keep testing to see what I can learn.
      On the EOS R I set up a button to manually switch between EVF and LCD screen because I don't like it automatically turning on the LCD screen. Since I can't use the DOF button on the EOS R5 the way I could on the 5D Mk4 I've decided to use that button to toggle between EVF and LCD. So far so good but things are always subject to change.

    I'm trying to find out what RAW sizes there are (Large, Medium, Small) for the R5. I can't find out anywhere if this can be changed. Which RAW formats are there ?! I have also the same question for fps, which fps settings are available

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 роки тому +1

      RAW images are only full size in the regular RAW and C-RAW formats. Single, The Drives modes are Continuous High+ (Max 12fps), Continuous High 8-6fps, Continuous Low 3fps, Self timer (2s+remote, 10s+remote). English manual p451. The electronic verses mechanical shutter mode, battery level, shutter speed and more affect the frame rate in each mode.

    Excellent video! Question: when you are shooting in the studio stopped down (say f/8 or more), do find that the Eye-AF is still as accurate as it is at a wider aperture? (I've heard mixed reports about this, and I know with my Nikon Zs, the wider apertures definitely produce more accurate autofocus.)

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 роки тому +1

      Prehaps wider aperture lenses provide better results as focus is probably occurring with the lens wide open and then the camera stops down for the exposure.

      Hi Rob. I don't shoot Architecture. For outdoor portraits I like to use the auto EVF brightness, which wasn't an option when I made this video. The reason why is if you use manual and switch from one environment to the other and forget to change it, you'll have troubling using it to judge exposure.

    Thank you for this great tutorial. I just went from an 80D to the R6! I love it! I have a few questions. 1)Can you tell me what picture style you suggest using? I am shooting indoor natural light portraits and hoping to get some lights soon. 2) What is your setting for High ISO speed NR? 3) Can you explain exposure simulation? I did a product shoot of some clothing at a studio I rented and we had problems with the camera focusing on the dress. We used studio lights and it was fairly light in there. It took the studio manager about a half hour to figure it out and I don't know what he did to make it work. He said it was the autofocus in live view. I don't know if that was the case or if it was the exposure simulation, which I really don't understand what that is. Thank you

      Thanks Cheryl, I always shoot in RAW for my final images so many of the settings don't affect my images. 1) standard, but this only affects jpegs, 2) default, it also only affects jpegs. 3. Exposure simulation shows you a preview of the exposure of your image when shooting available light. It shouldn't be used when shooting with flash as most of the time it will just show you a black or dark frame. I hope this helps!

    If you set it to sRGB it is my understanding that you are limiting the color space since Adobe RGB is a wider Gamut. Is setting it to sRGB essentially a good preview mode with all of the color Gamut in tact in the RAW or does it actually limit the gamut of the Raw? Not sure I'm explaining that well. I'd always rather start with the full gamut then dumb down if needed.
