@TheRottonapple The GBC was able to convert original Game Boy games from black and white to a few colors. There's actually a trick where you can switch colors while booting the GBC.
***** When I got it as a kid, I was slightly dissapointed cos I wanted a Gameboy Colour like my cousin. I soon realised it was better and thought my initial reaction was stupid; little did I know I was right all along - I got the sucky one.(lol jks)
ive had mine for over 10 years and i dug it out and played it the other day :( felt really sad like getting flashbacks of being young again, gameboy color was the one! made my childhood awesome
@meth_lungs Jesus man, you might have actually just found one of the first comments I have ever made on this channel! I completely forgot about this but yes, I do still have my Gameboy Color to this day and it still works lol. I was 20 when I made this comment and now I'm almost 30!
A lot of people treat the GBC like just another version of the GB but with colors... But It isn't... The GBC is far superior to both the NES and the original GB in every way! (Except resolution) It could display 64 colors on-screen from a 32000 colors palette, (against 24 on screen from a 54 colors palette from the NES) Could show many more sprites on-screen, it had 2 sprite layers instead of just 1 from the NES and the original GB, it was much faster It had far more impressive games like Wario Land 3, Shantae, Top Gear Pocket 2 and Dragon Warrior 3, games that the NES and the GB could never dream to run... But you know... The Pokemon games have never shown what the system truly could do... They kinda left people thinking the GBC was just a GB with colors and on the same level as the NES...
Ruko Michiharu Maybe it is because most of this planned stuff was going to be released in japan. But essentially they left all the games back over there and never released them over here.
The Gameboy Color brings back so many memories. My brothers had one and one of them passed a Teal GBC down and i still have it today. I just purchased the same one off ebay along with Pokemon Gold, Silver and Green. I'm excited to relive some exciting GBC while I'm suffering in high school.
@heroscaper57 No. Some games have watch batteries inside the carts but typically they last around 10 years and aren't really meant to be replaced (although you can).
oh my god memories. I had the see through purple one. OH MY GOSH AND THE GLOW WORM. that flashlight thing you plugged into it. Oh gosh, those were the days.
Hi. Easter Egg on the GBC: If you use 800 mAH rechargeables with a power adapter, it'll charge the rechargeables but anything higher than 800 mAH won't charge. It doubles as a charger. God bless.
I still remember getting a purple Game Boy Color with Pokemon Crystal for Christmas when I was very young, it was my first video game and got me into everything.
I remember when i was 12 saving up and taking my money into school with me on the way home i got off the bus in the high street halfway from home and brought me a game boy color and pokemon blue. Happy days.
I love this hand held its my childhood, am 24 years old now and i just placed an order for gameboy color teal and a copy of pokemon crystal. Waitin for it to be delivered. Childhood is the best time of ones life
Hey, just thought I would post a comment to say this is a great review. Was gonna buy a Micro, but watching this made me miss my COLOR, I want to play some old Castlevania and Zelda. :D
Agree.Better buy a SP if you want to play color and advance games.I bought my own,a blue one, 11 years ago.Or if you can find it buy Gamebox Advance SP,it's a Chinese copy, but it allows you to download and install roms instead of having to buy the games.
Great review! Just bought a purple and teal on amazon for my kids for Christmas. Noticed some of the games are over $100 brand new, but you can buy them used for under $10. Amazon is the boss!
@CEO of Me well in late 2023 there was some weird variation the name hasn't been released yet but they're still researching on it btw it's exclusive to Asia

The design of their Gameboy™ Color is a work of art. I love the battery hump. The colors were watered down and dull though. I think they got the colors right with the GBA. Never had one :(
That would be a marker for the IR communicator at the top (that black plastic square on the top of the unit.) A number of Game Boy Color games featured small multiplayer functions that used infrared communication instead of the Link Cable. If you ever used Mystery Gift in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, you used the IR.
I miss my gameboy color soo much! found it a few years ago, and I was really excited! but I lost it again now... oh well. mine was a purple, transparent version, where you could see the see the hardware beneath the outershell! it was my favorite thing when I was younger!
I had the dandelion (yellow) Game Boy Color about a year after it came out when I was 3, first Game Boy I ever had as well, and I freaking loved it. I can remember throughout the years all the times being driven to school in the morning playing Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on this.
I still love using my purple gameboy color. I wish I had more games for it but it's still a brilliant little thing that defined my childhood, playing Pokemon Yellow on it :D
Good review man, I miss these dam things... I'm going to pick one up for nostalgia sake. Annnnnd WTF!!!! I never knew these things were backwards compatible!!!! Def busting out some of the original gameboy games and doin' work lol.
Back when pokemon was huge..? Pokemon continues to be huge not only through little kids but i hear now even people in college have the new pokemon games, i have no idea how pokemon manages to stay so fresh and full of surprises after all these years.
not only had nintendo finaly upgraded their old gameboy with a aspected color screen, and improved hardware for more exciting games, but the best part is,it can colorize all your old b&w games in color, amezing. so you can experience all the old games like never before. i wish this was nintendo,s ansure to sega,s gamegear too.
this was the first gaming console I ever had back, the Kiwi GBC, I remember it cost $79.99 at EB Games (back then $79.99 was worth a bit more than $79.99 today)... this brings back memories!
I still have my GBC, sitting right beside me actually. Runs just as great as when I first got it for Christmas back in 98'. It's the atomic purple color, so you can actually see inside the game boy and see all the innards. It's got a few scratches on the screen but nothing too serious. God I spent much of my childhood with that by my side. XD
@TheMrcobain those are from the first generation. Game Boy Color is from the second. It is unique in the sense that it never got any additional models.
This was posted on my birthday, this is my favorite Nintendo console (that is before 2000) and i found my gameboy again today :) Oh and btw, the blue one is blue-green and it's the one i have :D
I still have both of mine (my original kiwi green one and the see through atomic purple one), and I also recently picked up the knock off version GB Boy Colour. That one is backlit so it's really handy for playing games, plus mine came with built in games. Will always love the GBC more though.
those things are like rocks,i droped mine twice in a tub of water in mexico and we got it back out and still functioned for both incidents.ive dropped those things so much and nothing broke, all fine.

The reflective GameBoy colour screens are actually a hell lot better than the backlit LCDs we have today cuz the backlit LCDs look more like a source of light and very bad for our eyes.
I've always loved the color and shape of this system. It hits all the right notes with me.

The different colors of the game boy are shown in the logo "COLOR" the kiwi green is represented in the the letter L
Teal is the letter R and vice versa.
