Hello! I am an OFTEC engineer based in Scotland. I agree absolutely on coal conversion AGA’s, the barrels weigh a ton! A top tip I have for the conversion units, is to cut the lower half of the barrel off! It can be done using a extra large angle grinder. The process takes about an hour to do, as the steel is super hardened! The result is a barrel in similar length to a purpose built unit! Trust me on this the Aga runs better and for longer, and less strain on your back! Also I agree with you as per OFTEC regulations there needs to be a remotely operated fire valve (a lot work on conversion units!) unfortunately most people usually decline upon quoting for upgrading works (ie farmers!) The CD14 notice is ignored and the customer fires it up after you have left! Good video!

Totally agree with all mate. We do cut them sometimes but also use a lifter to lift the hobs out when i can be bothered to get it out the van!!

A question: do you still see any AGA cookers being fired with coal?

I know of a few, but they are now a very niche market! The type of coal that they ran best on was Welsh anthracite! Very difficult to obtain now!

How to you clean the radial oil channels given there is no straight access to drill them?

Thanks for the comment. I use a drywall saw that i ground one side down to make it thinner and then the teeth cut the carbon away. also they bend in. Hope this helps.

I haven't seen or worked on one of those in 20 years here in the states... Oil is like 3 times more expensive in the UK than here in the states how is this still in operation ??? Love your content...

Top video as always. Question to you, I used to do oil (I don’t miss it) mainly cause of my tools and van and everything else getting covered with the stuff and stinking. How do you keep your tools and vans staying clean whilst dealing with oil all day. I used to look like a chimney sweep when going to an old unserviced one and spending hours cleaning it, then trying to go to another job!

Thanks for the comment. I have a rule . keep gloves on as much as you can and wipe tools as you go. When doing a bad boiler always have hoover on at all times and hoover every spec as you go and always clean and repair in a tray so it does not spread. as for the smell well..... that never changes 🤣

The aga is a bit caveman inside, are they worth the trouble ?

3.40 " it runs on wick" Don't think so! Wick only required to light before vaporising takes place once base heats up .................

Thanks for reply. of cause it does not run on wick and it runs on vapour. i do these videos for fun and whist i am working . i find it hard to explain stuff and sometimes get muddled as well as holding a phone and doing the job! These are overviews and not rehearsed scripts. Normally we pick mistakes up when we edit also but today i missed that comment 🤣 Have a great weekend.

Was an interesting video and I enjoyed it, but if you were not going to explain the high and low flame adjustment it might also have been worth not mentioning the metering stem and oil depth as all these are best not being touched by the customer, I quite agree if shown once or twice a competent customer is capable of cleaning the burner and fitting new wicks but don't think the public should be opening the ocv and touching inside. But watched a few of your vids tonight and the tip about covering the balanced flue when you were cleaning the sooted boiler was excellent as one of the guys I worked with didn't and some soot got blown out and pretty sure the customer claimed for carpets curtains new suite and probably TV aswell from the company.

Oh that reminds me so much of my Apprenticeship in the early 70’s servicing these. I’m amazed there’s still some out there!!......Also, installing Wilson Wall Flames. If you come across one of these Rob, please do a video👍👍

Hi. Thanks for the comment as always. We still have one Wilson Wallflame😂. Belongs to a house a builder has. He was talking about changing it though but still going! If we go back to service it this year i will def vlog it!
