  • How the carburetor / regulator works on a gravity fed oil stove. This video covers the external and internal parts. It also covers my method for adjusting the regulator / carburettor to have a proper flame at the minimum and maximum setting. These stoves operate without electricity, which is ideal for people living off the power grid or for those who would benefit from a dependable source of back up heat or an added cooking surface. They also use use #1 or #2 fuel oil (Diesel), which easily hooks-up to an oil tank fed by gravity or vacuum pump.

    Hi mate,
    This is the most useful video ever! I have adjusted my carburetor easily. I couldn't reset it because the flow was too high. The first chamber was filling too much and after 30mn the carburetor was resetting because the second chamber was full due to the overflow. I have readjusted the low flame screw and it now works perfectly.
    Many thanks again.

    Great video, been waiting for it!! Was just thinking about these when I was laying in bed this am. ?? Do a lot of thinking there. We had an oil stove in the living room when I was growing up. I think that something like this could be used for making waste oil stoves more safe. I am a big proponent of CLEANING the oil very well and having it a bit above room temp before metering it to improve consistency. I retired after 30 years of working in a facility maintenance shop. Ya gotta do things right to save time. Again, Thank You, Sir! Michael in Colorado.

    Thanks!! I just 'inherited' a house with a 1950's -60's oil stove.. this one has a blower/wall thermostat. The actual workings of the valve seems identical to your example. I found out yesterday the stove isn't putting out enough heat, and only about 2/3's of the ring is covered in flame. My guess is it's simply starved for fuel. Side note; the original outside tank is also 60 yrs. old, with no filter on the line. I'm hoping the internal filter is plugged! It will be getting an additional inline filter as well. I have to make sure the bottom of the 300 gallon tank isn't 6 inches of sludge/algae/rust/dirt first! Uncle told me the burner needs cleaned 1-2x a season, and that part is done.
    About all that is left is the fuel situation.
    Without your video, I had no idea where to even start, or how these things even function! Thanks!

    Great video, clear and very concise. Your model of "carburetor" is very heuristic.
    I have dealt with these contraptions for at least fifty years, from kerosene-burning heaters, and I can tell you, they haven't changed a bit. I myself have had the same, very trustworthy Italian furnace for more than 25 years now. I clean the carburetor and tune it up every year. When Autumn (cold) weather begins we light it up and keep it on permanently, night and day, for five to six months. Unfortunately, after the last weeks' significant increase in the price of oil derivatives I suspect these will tend to disappear.
    Keep up the good work!

However, it seems like the consumption is high. I'm going to take the advice given in this video and see if it makes a difference. If my fuel consumption isn't impacted at least my stove will burn cleaner.

    Hi! I am glad to find the info about classical oil stove, as I did not have any information or manual until I found youtube of you and of a few others. I have a problem about my Coleman oil stove which does not have oil flowing into the buning chamber... It had been working OK for decades but finally stop feeding the oil a few years ago. It was just left unused for more than 5 years and I finally started to do something about it. To begin with, I drain the old kerosene from the oil tank and disassemble the oil regulator assy to clean the parts today and hopefully it wokrs again when I assemble.... I will clean the burning chamber as I can see a lot of debris at the bottom, following your advice. Thank you for useful information, I 'l let you know when it comes back to work. So wish me luck! Phil, I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make this video, I have a franco belge stove with exactly same regulator, it was already in the apartment I bought and wasn't working with cracked glass, so I cleaned it up replaced the glass tried to light but nothing so I took the regulator lid off and it was like treacle inside, 45 minutes later and half a bottle of methylated spirit and it was cleaned and every previously seized component was now moving as it should . So I suspect their must be a blockage somewhere so time to get radical, I will turn oil supply off, clean regulator completly of oil and fill with meths then operate as normal to see if I can flush out any blockage . wish me luck

Put it all back together and bingo It works well, only slight and expensive problem was I managed to crack stove glass as I moved it back into place, this was new glass that cost me £135 plus £75 customs charge to have custom made in Uk and sent here to Malta , my bad .... but I have made a temporary repair using aluminium tape both sides with fire cement mastic along the joins and applied liberally. it doesn't look great but it holds and no fumes are escaping so will make do until I can replace the glass. Thank you for putting this video together. I have problem with my Franco Belge Merville. It has ran for years with minimal maintenance until now. Even at its highest setting (6) there's barely any flame. I've cleaned the burner pot, the regulator filter, and fuel input at the descaler. I replaced the inline filter. I blew the fuel line from the filter back to the tank. Fuel flow to the regulator seems normal now. But fuel flow into the burn pot still is measly on the highest setting. The problem seems to be narrowed down to the regulator. Any other ideas before I open the regulator? How difficult is maintenance on the regulator internals?
    Update: Yesterday I removed the regulator and cleaned with brake parts cleaner, compressed air , and Tarn-X on the brass and copper parts. There was probably a 1/4" of sludge in the bottom. I also found that the copper tube connecting the regulator to the burner pot was partially blocked. When the tube was cut and crimped the end was never cleaned up leaving the end approximately 50% occluded with copper burring. I cleaned the hole with a diamond tipped cutter on my Dremel and 220 and 320 grit sandpaper. I cleaned the ID with pipe cleaners and Hoppes Elite Bore Cleaning Foam. I started the stove last night. Reset the low end setting a the regulator. Now the stove is running well on 3 at what used to be 6. I think this stove never ran quite right due to the throttling at the copper tube and got blocked with sludge. These stoves work best when clean and free from obstructions.

      1. stove oil or diesel will burn pretty much the same. I haven't seen any benefits from using either.
      2. yes, a damper is always a good idea to keep a steady flame.
      3. It could be both, start by adjusting the flame to the low setting, and slowly increase the size. If the flame is too high, it will soot up quite quickly.

      Will be held in a separate compartment in the regulator (shown in a diagram in my other video). When you restart it, you need to press the lever down on the regulator to get the oil to flow again. It will begin to flow again and the overflow will eventually flow into your stove :)

      I don't see why not, the oil will slowly trickle through the regulator and into the stove. Because these are gravity fed, there should be no pressure build up etc.

    great video. Having trouble with my mother's oil stove in her kitchen that she still uses for cooking. Antique!!! anyways, it starts up with a nice blue flame but after 10 minutes or so, it stops and goes out. I haven't checked the filter yet for a clog but wondering if this is a safety feature...automatic shut off?

    • @philg
      @philg  2 роки тому

      Good day, yes there is a safety that shuts off the flow of oil if too much goes into the carburator/regulator. If it shuts off after 10 minutes I would verify the filter and make sure to give the pan a good clean. This will ensure a nicer flame.

    Thanks for your very informative video. I’ve tried adjusting the higher and lower level screws as you suggested and waited 10 mins or so with no noticeable difference to the flame. It seems the flame just stays to one side (the side where the oil is flowing from) and never travels other to the other side to create the ‘ring’ of fire. Any ideas or advice on this? Thank you!

      On my GLT stove, there is a cleanout rod in the oil feed port directly connecting to the burner. Instructions state that cleanout rod requires stroking and turning once a week to keep port from clogging up with burnt carbon. Might want to check if your stove is equipped with something similar.

      @@ElementofKindness Thanks for your post. There is no clean out rod in our AGA cooker. We think we have solved the problem by having the flue swept (first time in 30 years!). There wasn’t a great deal of soot/carbon but enough we think to reduce the updraft. It’s been working since then 🤞

    I have a heater that uses one of these carburetor. 1947 Sears pot belly oil burner. Been burning used oil through it very well except for the needed cleaning every day or two from the build up and chimney pipe cleaning every couple weeks. Was told to preheat the oil and that would help the soot and chimney build up a a lot.
    I was thinking of doing a single or double loop of the copper tubing around the stove pipe but can't find any information if the carburetor will be ok with the oil heated.
    Was also trying to find a way to preheat the pipe that goes into the belly, but not having much luck.
    Any ideas?

      That’s a great question. I don’t think heating the copper line will affect the function much. Maybe running it at a lower setting to counteract the heated oil that’s maybe less viscous. Is your oil line freezing or affecting the flow? I’ve ran mine at minus 30 Celsius with no flow issues. Let me know :)

    Hi, I have recently had my Rayburn serviced which has a regulater box as seen in your video. However the flue box now has tar in it and the slide is difficult to open and close as the tar stuff is making it stick, the chimney looks fine the cowl is still on the top. I rang the guy who servived it and he says it sounds like a chimney problem. It also smells in the house of fumes. He did have the top off the regulator box. Could something have been put back incorrectly

    • @philg
      @philg  2 роки тому

      It you have fumes in the house, verify your door seal and make sure you don’t have negative draft (air going back down the chimney). Sometimes adding a few feet of length to the chimney makes a huge difference. For the tar, make circles and push it in and out to clear it up.

I also changed the fuel filter while I was at it. Got it all bled out of air at the bleed screw on the filter housing. It is gravity fed by the way. Now I can’t seem to keep oil flowing to the carburetor and into the stove. I blew into the tank and oil would flow into the burn pot I would light it and it would go out. Fuel won’t continue to flow. Any ideas would be very helpful. I thought there would be some kind of bleed screw on the carb but not finding anything. Thanks

Got it home and openned the door and found the fire box corroded thru in a couple of places. Near the bottom ledge and on the left courner. But i have 2 questions 1. Can i rebuild/repair the firebox with ceramic fiber board and why can't i move the knob on the carberator at all. It has a small metal box on the top of the carb .near the knob with some dort of spring mechanism. On the other side laying above the carb is a box the connects to the power outlet which then connects to the fan. What are these things and can i savage any of it. So far only the fan works after tapping it it will turn on

    • @philg
      @philg  2 роки тому

      Thank you! I'm not too familiar with the Siegler stoves, but I would use sheet metal to rebuild anything inside the stove as the heat will melt any fiber material. Try heating up the knob with a torch, it may be stuck. I beleive the part you are talking about is the pilot flame generator, to turn on the stove itself. Let me know if any of this helps, cheers!

    • @colbolt54
      @colbolt54 2 роки тому

      Well the ceramic fiber is used in in kelms for ceramics. I don't think it would ever melt ceramic fibers since its used on my woodstove. But i will try the heat but obviously not the knob cause it would melt them. Where should i apply heat

It also has a copper wire that goes into the back of the unit but I cant tell what it connects to and what is the purpose? do you have any idea what it is? I have seen other photos on this kind of heater (Siegler) with this same device online.

It has caused me headaches, but it is my main heat source. i have shut it down and cleaned the soot out really good to allow better air flow and cleaned the filter (which was in great shape), but I am wondering if this box thing is an adjustment of some kind? If you are willing, this might be worth a try: Shut off the gas. Disconnect the pilot tube. Use your canned air to blow up thru the pilot tube & pilot assembly. Reconnect the pilot tube, turn on the gas, light the pilot, & try the furnace. We might get lucky & you blow some junk out of the pilot assembly creating a stronger pilot & more voltage.

      @@philg I will definitely do that. It seems to be running a bit better now since I have cleaned the inside and the air holes, but it does seem to be slow filling the bottom of the tank when I first light it, and the low flame adjustment probably needs to eventually be adjusted. I definitely need to extend my exhaust to increase my draft and be more careful about how I light it to reduce soot. Your videos have been helpful, but I will feel more comfortable experienting with making adjustments once things warm up and I can take my time to go inside the regulator.
