"That...is why you failed" Arguably one of the coldest put downs in all of cinema. With that said, I love that you picked up on yoda life-coach. I saw this in the cinema when I was 5 in 1980. I remember my father using Yoda to get me to do things that I was worried about
I have a similar experience. When I was down, my Mum would often say things like “Don’t give up. If Luke Skywalker had given up, he wouldn’t have got very far would he?” and “Do or do not, there is no try.” And it was very convincing!
Vader could have squashed Luke like an insect any time he wanted. He was toying with Luke, like a cat playing with a mouse. At first I didn't understand Yoda's warning about Luke possibly being able to help his friends, but destroying everything they had fought for. But it later became apparent that Yoda was fairly convinced that Vader would either kill Luke or turn him. And Luke going to Vader's side may well have meant the end of the rebellion.
He's a horrible boss indeed but to be fair Darth sidious is worst, Vader at least just kills you, Darth sidious first toys with you and then kills you "The emperor is not as forgiving as i am"
Hoth was filmed in Norway, the walkers were minis. Yoda was a doll operated by the guy who made the muppets. If you watch the Luke vs Vader fight again, you'll see that Vader fought with one hand at the start of the fight, so your assumption that Vader was toying with Luke is correct.
One small correction, Yoda was operated and voiced by Frank Oz. The muppets were created by Jim Henson. Frank Oz was, however, one of the original puppeteers for the Muppets.
A thing to remember is that using the Force was completely unknown when this came out. The most the Force had done was subtly influence his aim. Telekinesis was something new.
Yodas senile act was to test Luke’s patience and deameanor, specifically his attitude towards people that he doesn’t know. A Jedi doesn’t act impatiently and treats all life with value and respect no matter how annoying or inconvenient. If you want to see more of Yoda and Obi Wan you should definitely watch the Clone Wars. It’s a cartoon but it’s awesome.
I waited four hours in line to see this with my best friend and my dad when I was 13. The I Am Your father reveal got a huge reaction from the audience.
Han Solo's line "I know" when Leia said she loves him was originally "I love you too" in the script. On the day they shot the scene, both George Lucas and Harrison Ford agreed it would be more in line with Han's character to say something like "I know" but still mean "I love you too." And to keep the risk of spoiler leaks down, the line they used while filming the "I am your father" scene was "No, Obi-Wan killed your father." According to Mark Hamill, from the time they filmed the scene to the premiere, only he, George Lucas, Irvin Kerschner (the director), and James Earl Jones (voice of Darth Vader) knew about the real twist.
I remember watching an interview with James Earl Jones talking about when he was handed the script where he says the famous line and he said "Wait.....this can't be right."
@@generalgrievous696 Back when people weren't afraid to tell George when his script was bad. They didn't do it 20 years later so we got the cringe prequels. Mark actually said that Harrison Ford "would have been a great instructor, if he weren't so lazy"
One of favorite scenes is when Luke calls to Leia through the force and the camera pans across to her face as she hears him. Very cool and it suggests some things.

@@VKunia Pricelessly natural humorous reaction to Han Solo cutting the Tauntaun carcass to keep Luke alive, (In reality, I doubt it would work for very long.). Oddly enough, I recently read that in 2011 someone was arrested in Oregon for doing something similar to an old horse, claiming inspiration from the movie. (Sounded pretty disgusting!) Anyway, apparently they had to let em go because technically no crime was committed.
@sirjames19 He told Lucas and Irvin Kershner ( The Director) “ I think we’re missing a chance for Comedy and Lightheartedness” so like a Mack Daddy Pimp He just drops “I Know”. Ford’s suggestions or ad-libs always made any film he was in 10 or 20% Better!
"how did they do his voice?" it's Frank Oz, the same guy who did the original voices for Grover, Bert and Cookie Monster on Sesame Street, and also did the voice of Fozzie Bear and of course Miss Piggy.
Fun fact! Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) stated in an interview that in the script handed to everyone, Vader's line was "You don't know the truth... *Obi-Wan killed your father* ". Then Irvin Kershner (the director) and George Lucas took Mark aside and told him the actual line was "I am your father" (which would be dubbed in later), and Mark had to keep that a secret for about a year before the film debuted! P.S., Loving these reactions so far!
Funny thing about hoth - a lot of that was actually NOT a set. The scenes from the hoth wilderness, outside the Wampa cave - is actually outside the hotel everyone was staying at during filming! This was filmed in Norway, during the worst winter the region had experienced in ages, complete with actual snowstorms.
I’m thrilled you are marveling at the special effects. The AT-ATs were all stop-motion. There were a few documentaries made about these revolutionary effects.
What is really funny is that some people want a return to these types of effects, they want less CGI even though it was George who pushed for CGI. A lot of people do not seem to realize that stop motion and CGI use similar technique, getting each frame of a scene or picture correct, it also needs to be done with CGI.
@@VKunia Oh yes definitely check out the Star Wars Documentary, it does not just take you through these movies, it also shows you the explosion of modern visual technique in general. I have watched it so many times. When you are done these movies, to be a true fan and bit of a glutton for punishment, you have to attempt to watch the Holiday Special. If you can find it, I could actually recommend watching the making of Cleopatra, and if you put some things together from it you will realize that Star Wars and modern Hollywood might have been very lucky to happen at all.
@@jrus690 What's even funnier is that Revenge Of The Sith had more practical work in that one movie than the entire original trilogy combined while The Force Awakens, proclaimed as a return to practical effects (even though the prequels never actually abandoned practical effects) had more VFX shots than any of the prequels.
jedsithor I think what hurt the prequels was that they were doing earlier attempts at lighting with computer aid instead of physical light source. Each prequel movie had more practical work than the whole OT, but the difference was they were using heavy computer editing instead of the earlier editing techniques. It all combined to create a artificial look, whereas the sequel movies simply had better computer editing and lighting, although I think there was a lot of laser scanning going on, maybe with the prequels too, they still had to build things.
I saw these movies in the cinema when I was younger. Watching other people reacting to seeing them for the first time brings back memories of those happier times. Thank you. May the force be with you.
Yoda is not saying not to help his friends. He's saying that Luke shouldn't be a slave of his fears. He should act when he's ready to act. When he knows he can help those in need.
@@jp3813 No. Yoda is saying to not rush to them out of fear at the expense of his training. Luke ignored that advice, and what happened? He saved nobody and almost died. His friends he went to save had to save him instead.
While Yoda does want to save the galaxy, he only sees it from the angle of restoring the Jedi order. The Force isn’t exclusive to either the Jedi or Sith. So when Luke gets the vision of Han and Leia, it’s actually the Force testing if Luke is more interested in becoming a Jedi or actually saving the galaxy. Luke going to Bespin isn’t a mistake, it’s a sacrifice play. While they can’t save Han right then, his fight with Vader gives Leia, Lando and Chewie the opportunity and time to escape, also because they needed R2 to realize the hyper drive was disabled and needed to be turned on. Because if Leia, one of the most prominent leaders of the rebellion dies, it’s most likely a death blow. So Luke, whether he’s conscious of it or not, is choosing the right path towards the light, even if it means risking walking away from his personal wish to become a Jedi.
I still remember watching that climactic father and son scene as a child, and I really think it affected me in a profound way: "We can rule the galaxy, as father and son" And tiny child me, just thought "Why would you want that? I love how you pick up on not only the big details, but also the subtle details of the movie. Like how you picked up on how Vader looked when he watched Luke jump to his death after he cut off his arm. In the novelization of this movie it goes in to further detail on how Vader felt. In that moment, watching his son fall to what he believed to be his death at the time, Vader had never hated himself more than in that moment. He realized that his son would rather die than join him and his self loathing was so strong that he felt completely helpless and speechless. Glad you picked up on that.
This is how the Force was in the originals and I wish they kept it like this. Natural, mysterious, life energy. Mastering it required time, training, self discipline, meditation, focus. In the recent ones it apparently picks people and makes them fight each other.

At keast you came to like him by the end. You weren’t wrong in the pronunciation, Lando (and 3PO I guess) just pronounces it that way. The twist was kept secret from pretty much everyone. The only ones who knew were George Lucas, James Earl Jones (Vader’s voice), and the director. They told Mark Hamill right before they filmmed the scene. For everyone else, the line they thought it was gonna be was “Obi-Wan killed your father.”
Very thorough but one item. Because of the name Han (it is commonly used among the Dutch), Frank Oz decided to have some fun with the syntax that Yoda uses. In German:"Jon zu dem market gehen." Literal translation-John to the store went (Germans place the verb at the end of a sentence. German is descended from Dutch, so the syntax is very similar). When 800 years old you are look as good you will. Dutch.
Fun fact, Harrison Ford didn't actually audition for the part of Han. He was already in a film directed by Lucas (American Graffiti) and Lucas asked him to work with actors who were auditioning. But he and Hamill and Fisher had the best chemistry, so Ford got the part.
You saw the remastered version, that's why some scenarios looked a bit better than in the original, for example, in cloud city, there weren't windows in the original, those were added in the remastered editions, the snow monster had a few more scenes as well, also Luke's actor had a car accident previous to this movie, and had face surgery, so I understand that's why they added the scene where the monster attacks his face
The story about them writing the Wampa attack in has bounced around a bit over the years, but IIRC that was already in the script even before Hamill's accident.
That bit about the Wampa attack is a myth. There was a car accident, but it wasn't the reason they included that bit. There's a shot where you can clearly see Luke's face before the Wampa attack happens
Ford accidentally got the role of Han Solo. He had done some acting to this point and had actually acted in a George Lucas movie before called American Graffiti. Lucas had no desire to reuse actors from that movie, so Ford wasn't even being considered. Ford's primary job at that time was of carpentry working on various projects for Hollywood stars and productions. Lucas was casting the three main characters of Luke, Leia and Han, but doing auditions in groups, so he could find the right chemistry between the characters. He had 5 actors auditioning for Luke, 5 for Leia, but only had four actors for Han. The casting director of American Graffiti who was also a producer, knew that Lucas needed one more Han and also knew that Ford was available, being a friend of Ford's. The producer convinced Lucas to have Ford just read the part, so their would be enough people for the auditions. Ford came in and turned out better auditions than the other actors trying for the role and eventually earned the part despite Lucas being against the idea of using an actor that he had used in a past project. The rest as they say is history.

Han Solo's line "I know" when Leia said she loves him was originally "I love you too" in the script. On the day they shot the scene, both George Lucas and Harrison Ford agreed it would be more in line with Han's character to say something like "I know" but still mean "I love you too."
And to keep the risk of spoiler leaks down, the line they used while filming the "I am your father" scene was "No, Obi-Wan killed your father." According to Mark Hamill, from the time they filmed the scene to the premiere, only he, George Lucas, Irvin Kerschner (the director), and James Earl Jones (voice of Darth Vader) knew about the real twist.
I remember watching an interview with James Earl Jones talking about when he was handed the script where he says the famous line and he said "Wait.....this can't be right."

I’m thrilled you are marveling at the special effects. The AT-ATs were all stop-motion. There were a few documentaries made about these revolutionary effects.
People have been recommending checking out the SW Documentary so I will definitely check it out! Hopefully it addresses them :)
That cliffhanger at the end, even to this day I still get chills from that

@@lusotuber Hence, he's not supposed to help his friends *right now*.
@@jp3813 Oh, I thought you meant that Yoda was saying it in that moment. My bad.

Imagine being 10 years old and sitting in the THIRD ROW, because there were no other seats to sit because the theater was pact, and having the jump scare of the Wampa attacking Luke.
You're my age... I watched the original Star Wars at age 7 in the theater in 1977. In fact I went back and saw it 4 more times in the theater. I likewise saw Empire and Return 3 or 4 times each in theaters. I waited in long lines and saw most of them on opening day. The prequels, I only watched once each in a theater. I bought the VHS, and later the DVD's for all of these movies.
I ended that perfect streak after episode 8. I didn't see 'Solo' or episode 9 until last year when I finally subbed to DisneyPlus for Mando. And boy am I glad I didn't waste my time seeing those atrocious films in the theater.
@@Mr.Ekshin My family saw Star Wars (original title) in 77 every weekend until we could understand and translate for the Jawas. My parents thought that was enough.

Jedi I first saw with my friend, his little broth and his brother's friend. Their mom dropped us off at the mall the theater was in. Remember when parents could do that? That was also my first taste ever of Mint Chip ice cream while we waited for the theater to let us in. Of course we enjoyed it.
I didn't mind Solo as much as the last three movies. JAR JAR DICKNOSE Abrams fucked this franchise just like he fucked Star Trek. He may be a good producer but he sucks as a writer and director. The story about them writing the Wampa attack in has bounced around a bit over the years, but IIRC that was already in the script even before Hamill's accident.

Well, that clears that up. I always wondered why Ford was working there as a carpenter after having been in American Graffiti.

Fun fact: Harrison Ford didn't know if he wanted to renew his contract for another film, so George Lucas and the screenwriters originally left Han's fate undecided in case Ford signed on for Episode VI or not.
3:21 - LOL!!! Just because someone rolls their eyes back in their head, doesn't mean they're dead. They could be using the force...or possessed. Hahahaha
And yes, please react to the next episode right away.
10:00 the guy that did the voice also did Fozzy Bear from the Muppets. At this point Like doesn’t know what Yoda looks like, he heard he’s a Jedi master and wasn’t expecting a tiny swamp goblin
"That's what you get for trying to eat him, stupid yeti"
Best reaction I've heard to that scene ever 🤣
There was a book released about 15 years after this (Darksaber, another brilliant installment in the old Star Wars Expanded Universe by Kevin J. Anderson) where Luke cuts off its other arm.
23:00 Being an amputee, you have no idea how cool this was to me.
They had a TV show on in the 70's about a test pilot who was very badly injured in a plane crash. He basically had most of his parts replaced with bionics that gave him super strength super speed, super senses and became a sort of Super Hero.
When I was a kid, I was sure that by the year 2000 they would get a bionic leg and be able to run and jump like Steve Austen.
I'd be 30 then, obviously too old to appreciate it, but I was sure looking forward to it.
23:42 Yeah, we definitely need that technology. I'd love a new lower leg that I lost in the Air Force. Great video.
VKunia: I always saw those things and thought they are so cool!
Me: That's because they ARE so cool...
"What is with all this tension between them?"
It's called three years of sexual frustration...☺️
She just knows that it would never work with Luke, for SOME reason.
And as said in the first movie reaction, their personalities do clash.
Well those who haven't watch prequels first would surely knows there sure was sexual tension between Luke and Leia maybe because of the similarities in their characters while Hans and Leia are that "opposite attraction" trope that is usually more preferred among people. If they really were planning to make them siblings, they shouldn't have added that kiss scene.
@@Tooba-K123 Yes in retrospect that kiss scene turned out a little shaky.
@@j.f.fisher5318 It's the classic "Two Strong Personalities Clash" and fall into a endless love/hate cycle. It doesn't hurt that they're both good looking and have healthy builds.
Fun facts:
At the beginning of the movie when Luke is wounded, those are real scars, Mark Hamill had a bike or a car crash IRL.
Carrie Fisher and Harison Ford actually had a love story at that time, they keep it secret until Carrie Fisher published her biography.
Of ALL the insults Leia throws at Han, he takes issue with being called "scruffy looking" lol.
I mean he is a captain now, he probably feels like he has to look the part.
"It looks like the surface of a Brownie". lol Cracked me up.
3:40 “...when you’re really comfy or you have sex...”
Was I the only one who 1st heard it that way?
I did a doubletake and had to turn on subtitles to get that one lol.
Hoth was filmed in Norway. Specifically Finse.
