Artists who HATED their own songs!!

- The music a singer wants to make, and what their audience actually wants from them, does not necessarily always align. And usually because of pressure from record companies & managers, our favourite singers can oftentimes end up recording songs, they themselves aren’t all that keen on. A number of legends including Celine, Mariah, Cher and Toni Braxton weren’t too enamoured with the idea of singing some of these songs. And even though they didn’t like them to begin with, I’m sure they're all now very glad they were convinced otherwise.
So which one of Mariah’s songs did she think was ‘schmaltzy’ and had to be persuaded to do? Why did the songwriter of ‘If I could turn back time’ have to plead with Cher to record the track? Why did Celine Dion reject ‘My heart Will Go On’ the first time she heard it? And what were Toni Braxton’s reasons for hating her biggest hit ‘Unbreak my heart?’ This mini documentary explores these questions and more.

Artists needs to wrote their own music
@@TyeArtisik some due Celine writes in her native French or her second language English
Mariah Carey's Hero is one of her not-so-vocally challenging songs (in her own standards) because she didn't intend to write the song for herself and was considerate of the intended singer's range and ability and yet I've seen a lot of singers struggle with that song. 😭
I would imagine so - I can't think of many professional singers who'd be able to deliver that song.
No one could parallel her "Hero" live during 1996
Whitney Houston disliked Where Do Broken Hearts Go when hearing the demo, she said she didn’t like it and didn’t want to record it, but het manager clive davis insisted she did as he felt it was “hit material” she unwillingly recorded it and they released it as the 4th single from her second album which went number 1 and was her 7th consecutive number 1 hit that is a record that still stands today, the music video was also the video kevin costner saw which made him realise he wanted whitney for the bodyguard, whitney later said the song has grown on her and is now one of her favourites.
thanks for that - I think I read about that in Clive Davis' book.
Another diva who belongs in this pantheon is Tina Turner, who, believe it or not, was very resistant to recording “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” She thought it sounded too “white.” To be fair it was, but she added an oomph to it and well… we know how that went. Hard to believe, it’s her only No. 1 single as a solo artist.
yes that's true - I included that in my Tina Turner video a few weeks ago.
Oh interesting. To me actually it sounds more soulful and ''black'' than later songs like The Best which she loves. I always thought Tina didnt like it as it was more R&B and she saw herself as a Rock'n Roll singer. I never thought it sounded white tbh
That makes no sense. A song neither sounds black nor white. What she said was racist and ridiculous.
It was recorded by Bucks Fizz first, and sang by a male member of the group.
@@LuciferXFallen290You sound dumb! Stop deflecting your racism on black people by calling them racist because black people don’t have the power to be racist against white people. Saying it sounded white, means it attracts the white audience than the black one.
This reminded me of the song telephone that was supposed to be for Britney Spears but it was rejected (i guess by the studio) and it returned to its composer who was non other than Lady Gaga who kept the song for herself and included it in her debut album.
Oh yeah I heard that one
To be fair, My Heart Will Go On was different to the type of songs she did at that time. And this might sound trite, but I honestly think no one else could've sang it other than her.
It was a different song structure - it doesn’t have a chorus distinct from the rest of the song. It’s more like a lot of verses.
“Cher might’ve been making music since dinosaurs roamed the earth” damn 😂 you didn’t have to do her like that LMAO
It’s a compliment - I’m trying to highlight her incredible longevity
@@jonnyharvey period! Long live Queen Cher
I was looking for THIS comment 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ha
Dionne Warwick admitted in The Billboard Book of Number One Adult Contemporary Hits by Wesley Hyatt that she was not fond of "Heartbreaker" (regarding the song's international popularity, she quipped, "I cried all the way to the bank"), but recorded it because she trusted the Bee Gees' judgment that it would be a hit.
I'd love to read that book.
Wow!
Great examples that music producers and 'executives' are in their jobs for a reason - they know what they're doing!! It's also refreshing to know that Cher cares about the songs she records. I always thought she let her producer(s) pick the songs for her.
Yes she has said in the past she’s not a big ‘Cher’ fan, which I found disappointing
Because You Loved Me first was offered to Toni but she refused it. Same happened with Celine who didn't want to record Unbreak My Heart. This ain't fake I watched interview with Toni when she mentioned that.
yeah I heard that too
Wow! Celine Dion singing a song while sick still sounds a million times better than 99% of people.
yeah she was sick when she recorded the demo for MHWGO and that was the take the used for the song itself. So yes you're right
99%? I don’t think so. Lol
@@kurischan7303 I didn't mean 99% of trained singers. I meant regular people trying to sing. 😎
I think your meant 100%
@@kurischan7303 Yeah…100% sounds more accurate.
I think it's safe to say, if the artist doesn't like the song, it's guaranteed to be a hit 😂
Yeah unless they're like Madonna who can/could spot a hit a mile away, it's best listen to the experts in the record companies
I think they were all too young to fully embrace or understand a cheesy ballad
@@jonnyharveywell, she hasn’t been able to spot one in the past decade 😂
@@LCO82 yes perhaps, but her track record when it comes to hits is pretty much unparalleled.
@@LCO82 To be fair, radio rarely supports older artists.
I once saw an interview here on UA-cam of Cher saying that she doesn't like any of her songs at all except for I Got You Babe. The reason why she said she loves I Got You Babe is because even though things didn't work out between her and her ex husband Sonny Bono at the time before he passed away she still loved him very much. The reason why she doesn't like the rest of her songs though is because she sings and performs for her fans and not herself. I actually really admire her for that considering that's what she said in the interview that I watched on here.
yes I've heard that too. She has said a few times, she's not a big 'Cher' fan. She did make an album in 2000 called 'not commercial' which she released through her website. I think she really likes rock music. I think?
This is more modern but apparently Summer Walker said she hated the lead single “Ex for a Reason” she said the pop sound was pushed by the label and she wanted to stick to a more contemporary R&B sound
I don't really know her
I think most singers end up hating their first 'big' song. Often because they're forced to perform it all the time. I remember JLO saying she can't stand If You Had My Love.
I love that song
How could JLo hate that song when she didn’t even sing much of it? ;) ☠️
@@unofficiallatinamericanist I was thinking that but then I thought I best not go there

“If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my songs, I'd do that too.”
Mariah rejected her own song unlike others who rejected others. Just to remember that she is increíble like that.
yes good point - people forget that Mariah is a brilliant songwriter also.
Lesson: don't pitch a song to Celine by daring to sing said song to her.
If you're going to sing in front of Celine, you need to be pretty good.
But she only went and did that demo because she knew she could sing it better than the guy who wrote it. So actually it worked out perfectly!
Chaka Khan hated “I Feel For You”. Especially the rap at the beginning!
I have never thought I’d see the day I’d hear someone say the words Cher and dinosaurs in the same breath 😂💀 I CANNOT BREATHE 💀 I fucking love Cher, btw

Coko from SWV actually hated recording "Weak." She said she was crying in the studio
I think I heard that before. Right Here is such a classic
Brian Alexander Morgan initially wrote "Weak" for Charlie Wilson, and he rejected it.
It was supposedly written about Chante Moore, if I am not mistaken.
If I remember, Tammy Wynette initially disliked her song "Stand by your Man." It was written by Wynette and one of her producers. Tammy was not very fond of the song because it was unlike anything she had ever written before. As time went on, she later learned to embrace the song. It has since become one of her biggest and signature hits. Tammy Wynette was such an interesting figure in music.
I didn’t know that - thanks for sharing
Also dianne warren wrote for celine dion “i don’t want to miss a thing” by aerosmith and “there you’ll be” by faith hill. But celine dion didn’t like sing to another soundtracks at the times.

Celine turned down There You'll Be because she was on a hiatus to have a babybat that time. Another trivia about Celine, Shania Twain wrote From This Moment and wanted Celine to sing it. Gloria Estefan's Heaven's What I Feel was originally recorded by Celine (yes you can even her remnants of Celine track in Gloria's version) for her Let's Talk About Love album but the song ended up on the chopping board.
I would like to know why Celine Dion refused to sing her Eurovision winning song Ne partez pas sans moi after Eurovision? I really like that song, but I as far as I know she never sung it in public again.
Maybe she didn't want to be associated with the Eurovision at the time & wanted to be a solo superstar? The Eurovision was quite uncool for a very long time.
Britney Spears can't stand Sometimes and dislikes Outrageous, while some of her favourite songs are Toxic, Breathe On Me, Do Somethin', Piece Of Me and Radar.
Oh I didn’t know that - I will have to google it
Outrageous is dire, but Sometimes is one of my personal favorites
Another great video 😊
Cheers - thank you 😀
This has the potential to be a series truly 😅 there’s also the opposite that could be fun: executives who were not convinced of the potential impact, but the singer and team really stood for it and it became huge. One example is Kate Bush’s ‘Wuthering Heights’.
thanks sb else suggested that - I will have to look into it.
@jonnyharvey because of you kelly
Fantasy mariah
TBH, without being attached to the Titanic movie, I don't think "My Heart Will Go On" would have even been worthy of being a single. It was already then the tailend of the era of the 80s/90s power ballads as hiphop/R&B were about to take over the pop music landscape. I can also see why even for Celine, it sounded too maudlin & old-fashioned, besides not having a radio-friendly hook. It was just all about OTT melodrama that just happened to represent the intense, tragic love story in the center of one of the biggest movies of all time. It simply rode that huge, emotional wave to the top as luck would have it.
that's interesting. It was the tail-end of the big 80s/90s power-ballad. There really weren't many after that. Maybe Faith Hill 'There You'll be' in 2002. Nowhere near as big though.
Make It Happen > Hero
Yeah that’s cool - each to their own. MIH is more upbeat.
Thank you! It’s an interesting video and you’re very pleasant and informative 🙏🏻

its been said that Tina Turner didn't want whats love got to do with it and had to get talked into it by her manager
Oh yeah I heard that
It proved a lot talented singers, they don’t really know what best for them, it always need the other equal or higher authority person to give them a kick to make some classic song happen
they don't always know what's best for them. Choosing hits is a talent in itself and surprisingly a lot of singers don't have it
I heard in an interview, My heart will go on that we listen is the demo version of the song. She never did it again. Cause she hated it so much and she wasn’t feeling good that day.
oh yeah I heard that too. That's what a brilliant vocalist she is.

I could argue Without You is Mariah's biggest hit on Music Box than Hero
Did I say Hero was the biggest hit off Music Box?
"Of course Hero went on to become a mega hit, her 8th number one in America and was one of the main reasons its’ parent album ’93’s Music Box went on to sell almost 30 million copies, making it one of the biggest selling albums ever. " Where did I say it was the biggest hit from the album?
@@jonnyharvey3:43
@@hughw2377 I checked that part a second time. I never said it was the biggest hit from the album. I said what I pasted above.
You are wrong, Hugh 😊
We can also say that marketing the product also contributes with the success of the song regardless of who sings it. But all the singers here are very pleasing to the ear and the songs actually do well with their range and style with the exception of Mariah Carey who is able to do so many things with her voice and range and Hero is not a challenging song for her. Overall this was great information as a singer and song writer myself although I cannot be compare with the talent of these women. Thank you Jonny.
Of the 4 songs mentioned, the best ones are: Hero and Un-break My Heart. Don't like: My Heart Will Go On.
yeah that's cool- everyone hears music differently.
how can someone hate a song and manage to vocally thrill us like Toni and Celine did?? They are lying!!
that's how talented vocally they are.
I HATE unbreak my heart, and it is nowhere near being Toni's best song! She was right about it being corny! I wouldn't call it Disney because I love a lot of Disney songs. Anyway, Toni's best songs: Seven Whole Days, Love Shoulda Brought Home, Let It Flow, Another Sad Love Song, Please, Wasn't Man Enough For Me... I'm a fan of Toni, she did an amazing job with a song I HATE!
Another song I HATE is, I Will Always Love You! I wish my all time favorite singer Whitney "The Voice" Houston never sang that song! They act like it's the only song her BEAUTIFUL voice ever sang!
Great stories! I would love to hear ubersit stories too. Where the artist insisted recording a song that anyone else thought was a bad idea but also went into a mega hit!
oh that's an interesting idea - I'm trying to think of some. Usually the label have the final say, so it's usually the other way around (I think).
Berry Gordy was adamant about Marvin Gaye not releasing the album "What's Going On" on Motown Records.
He wanted him to record more pop oriented songs, and Marvin rejected that idea, releasing one of the most groundbreaking albums ever in music history.
Berry Gordy has since realised how much of a mistake it would have been if he never released that album.
I usually end up really disliking the songs that the artists get exhausted of too

Yeah I wonder what really happened there. It’s strange it happened with two laface acts - Toni & TLC
This is where songwriting is important for residual income.
Most of the hit songs from TLC and Toni were not written by them.
To my knowledge, Lisa Lopes was the one who had most songwriting credit within the group TLC. Most of their songs were written by Dallas Austin and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.
