      Hi Tom
As an Origin customer for many years and after watching your great video it seems like you may have left some of the minor finer details out of the video.
After accessing the link above I realized that that was a personalised link only for you as it has your name in the UR, but I did find the actual ev-power-up link, but never managed to progress further than the message that popped up " there has been a problem, please contact Origin Energy".
I contacted Origin with my Tesla details and my account details and they informed me that I had to have an Origin 360 Charger or an Origin 360 subscription. As I have neither, could you please enlighten me (and possibly others) as to how to obtain an Origin 360 subscription.
      Here is their reply -
      Hi John,
Origin EV energy plan eligibility criteria not met.
Thank you for expressing your interest in the Origin 360 EV energy plan. As much as we would like to welcome you aboard, we’re writing to advise you that our checks have shown some or all of the eligibility criteria have not yet been met.
In order to be eligible for the EV tariff you must have one of the following products:
      1. Origin 360 EV Charger or
      2. Origin 360 EV Subscription.
If you feel there has been an error in the evaluation process, please reach out to us on emobility@originenergy.com.au
      Kind regards,
      Josh
      Operations Specialist - EV Charging,

Hi Tom, it sounds like a great plan but I decided to ask Tesla Customer Support about known issues and this was their reply:
“For your enquiry regarding Origin EV power-up program, we have found that some third party charging apps keep the Tesla vehicle in an awake state (amongst other issues caused by 3rd party software) which is actually detrimental to the BMS system as it needs to get readings not just when in park, drive or charging. But also sleep. Unfortunately as we do not manage those apps we can only advise with regards to what we can observe and control - which is essentially NOT to use a third party charging application.” We didn’t think it was worth the risk so we decided try the AGL plan instead, however their feed-in tariff is down to a woeful 3ct per KWh in QLD…

Another timely video Tom. Origin was my previous provider but I ditched them to change to AGL Night saver EV plan. It allows me to charge my Tesla M3 rwd ( Gen 3 wall connector) at the same rate 8c per kwh (phase 3). Although these rates are only available between 12 and 6am, Im able to take advantage of the 8c rate for all my grid electricity needs for those six hours. eg dish washer, washing machine and dryer etc. Daily supply charge of 76c, Solar FIT 7c. I only use the Tesla app. Theres no restriction on the AGL app. General tariff 32c per kwh. As I dont have a Power Wall the TOU tariff was not as favourable.

That's what I like about the AGL EV plan, no limits on what you can do in the cheap time. I have the EV charging, the house battery recharging for when the expensive tariff kicks in at 6 AM, where here in SA, it goes upto 50c a kwh. In the winter months, I have the heater on a timer to run a while before I get up.

I’ve been with Amber since they started and to this day still don’t understand how I can get the low prices quoted by them (and yours here). The live price tracker is never that low and I’m always wondering when and how to actually get those lowest rates I apparently can get.
Feel like a total smooth brain and deciding what to do before my new Tesla shows up this month. I already installed the wall charger, just need to decide on staying with Amber or switching to someone else.

@@benbodhi if the sun is shining you should see under 5c or less from about 11 through to 14. On weekends is when it will get really low and sometimes swing to negative prices. The only issue is that’s the wholesale cost not what you end up paying because of all the other charges. I’m keeping my eye on some of these other deals as a result. Because I drive around 800k a week I have 11kw charging so I can get 50kwhr into the battery in the times when power is cheap. I use charge HQ which talks to the amber app and the Tesla app to control charging based on price.

    • @benbodhi
      @benbodhi 7 місяців тому

@@paulsimpson8990 thanks for that! I don’t have solar or a battery, just a wall charger for the car and regular old grid with smart meter since amber put it in. Will def be linking charge hq to have a play with prices to charge at, and comparing to other providers. No lock in periods makes it easy to switch until I find the right one once I’m charging the car. I’d be doing about 500kms per week.

    I use the Tesla UMC with a 32A tail - charges at 7kW / 50km/hr.

Neat to see this in action. In practice I wouldn't really want to have my energy provider that tightly integrated with and controlling my energy usage though. Feels like they'll do a rug-pull in future which I have experience with Origin doing.
I was looking into Amber recently and if you have something that can coordinate your solar/battery/charger like Homeassistant you can do some neat things like use the free periods to charge your car and battery, then export your battery to grid during peak hours to sell at a higher rate. A bit more complicated but at least you then have the control in your own hands.

I've been with Origin for a while and had no idea they offered this until now, although in fairness it does look like a relatively new product and still officially in beta. All the other "EV plans" from AGL, Ovo etc were a no go for us as we have too much PV on the roof, so it's good to have this as an option for those of us with bigger systems.
I set it up today and noticed that just setting a straight charge schedule in the car was ignored by Origin. Despite telling it not to charge until after 10pm, it started anyway. Charge on Solar with a schedule seems to work though.

Hi Tom Great Video. I have a very similar solar and battery setup to you (Enphase/Tesla). The deal your on is fantastic but I ended up selecting Amber. If Amber is available to you as I understand it isn't available everywhere I would recommend investigating them. One other problem I have found over the years is that energy providers are really good at changing the goal posts and I have had to change often. Hi Tom, a (hopefully) quick question. If Origin retro-actively charge you 8c/kWh for charging your car based on the charge put into the car and you have a smart charger in place so that it diverts solar generation into the car instead of exporting to the grid, would Origin then charge you for your own generated power going into the car?
I guess a way around that would be to only charge the car at night, but for those of us with excess solar without a battery that want to charge our cars off excess solar generation, if Origin is basing their consumption and therefore charging costs to us on what they see in the app, how can they determine if the power is being supplied by them or by our solar system? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for this. I'm still dithering over whether to get a Tesla Y or not, but I did look into the pricing of this plan. Putting it in perspective for a current ICE owner, I recently got a 50.000km service on my Outback at $800, plus hire car plus time and effort to get the car there and then pick it up and then take it back for corrective work... For a Tesla Y LR, the charge cost under the Origin plan would equate to around $6.40 per "fill". So for the cost of a significant (not a _major_ ) service of an ICE vehicle, I could run a Tesla LR Y for at least 55,000km. (Assuming my arithmetic is correct.) Hmnn... I think I should stop vacillating.

TLDR: Origin EV Power Up Beta will NOT charge your Tesla to 100% for BMS calibration. MAJOR FLAW for Tesla LFP battery owners.
We all know Tesla RWD models have LFPs that is recommended to charge to 100% at least once a week to calibrate all the little cells to 100% and make BMS happy. The flaw in Tesla's part is this calibration continues to happen for another 20 mins to an hour even when battery hits 100%. The problem is as soon as Tesla hits 100% (while still charging and calibrating) Origin stops the charging on the vehicle. I noticed this morning and I manually started the charge. But because Origin is constantly checking my car battery status every 5 minutes or so, it stops the charging again thinking it's fully charged. The origin needs to either quit taking control of the charging schedule once the car hits 100% (as the car is intelligent enough to stop charging when it is fully charged) or look for a different variable in the battery status that says "Charging Complete" when the BMS is successfully calibrated. Most users using this feature wouldn't know this is going on because the car and app will still say 100% when they check or get in but in fact, the crucial calibration part would not have had enough time to charge each individual cell to 100%. Can't even force (instant charge) Origin to keep charging the vehicle because they just stop the charging within 5 minutes of them noticing 100%, I had to manually start charging multiple time across the period of 45 minutes to actually successfully calibrate my batteries to 100% at 5AM yesterday morning.
Other thing I don't quite get is if I'm charging the vehicle during the day on solar (no ppwerwall), how do they differentiate which portion of my charging is done via solar and which portion of my usage to apply the 8c charging while still maintaining 32c for the rest of my house. If it's a cloudy day and my Tesla and Washing Machine are occasionally pulling from the grid, what portion will be 8c and what portion will be 32c? Hmmm...

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  7 місяців тому +3

OK I think I understand your point now ... someone else asked about this earlier in the comments but your explanation makes sense in that the Tesla LFP vehicles require extra time to fully calibrate the BMS 💡
      - This may be something that Origin will have to address if anyone from their tech dept is watching/reading these comments

@@LudicrousFeedthis is actually an issue for LR & Performance batteries too. I’m in the process of calibrating my M3P battery and the car states “charging stopped” instead of “charging complete”. The car ticks over to 100% but still shows it needs 30 mins to complete charge, however the origin API takes over and cuts off the charge session. Origin will need to find a solution for this.
