Along with the mindset change I stopped over swinging and only swung 80% for much better control and consistency, luckily power has ever been a weak point but now I have power and control 22 degree hybrid from the tee and I get a consistent 200 meters(220 yards) straight or a small left to right shape (spread of about 10 meters) so I know when I tee up left side I will be left to middle..... Two things I wasn't doing that I am now is reading the lies and I put 90% of practice is putting especially distance control and chipping / pitching, I never used to read my chips as putts, now I do, my short game if taken from 150 in plays more like a 8-10 handicap so I am looking next year at two things getting under 15 handicap and adding a 5 Wood to my bag and maybe a 3 wood
Great video Matty boom-boom. Last month I was invited to play with hickory golf clubs, first time I have tried these. Driver was about 13° of loft, a 3-iron, a 7-iron, a 9-iron and a SW. Played forward tees at 6300 yards, Par 72. It was stress free and fun golf. Zero lost balls because the ball was easier to control and never went over 200 yards. Each approach shot was set up for easiest up and downs, no shots taken with the wood off the ground, irons only. Results, 81 stress free and zero double bogeys and zero birdies. Easiest 9 over and most enjoyable I have ever played, I play off 3. Really has taught me that without the hero shots, golf is easy and more enjoyable Playa
I started doing the toe down chipping whenever possible now. I used to only chip w my 60°. I shot 84 for the 3rd time this morning. I have yet to break this number but i played better than any other time today bc i was never in a bad position, i just didnt make any long par saving putts this time. Got myself a birdski too. I took out my 3wood for my 2nd shot on the par 5 to try and make it on in 2, then i heard the chief playa voice say "you are not jack nicholson", and i put it back in the bag and just hit a nice stress free 7wood to my layup 60° distance of 75 yds and put it within 3 feet for the easy bird. WhaddaJediGolfMasta thanks for all you do playa
good advice! My handicap is generally between 14 and 15. I drive just 200-210 (I'm 65). But I had a nice 85 today as I did what you preach (1) no lost balls and (2) just a single bunker (I got greedy and tried to hit a par 5 outside my confidentiality zone). Putted well (31 putts) and frankly didn't even hit the ball that well. But course management is so crucial (along with not getting mad at yourself).
NO ONE talks about toe-down chipping. You're the only person I've heard talking about it and it's awesome. I started using it with my scratch golfer buddies and they think it's great. I watched this video yesterday (16 handicapper) and shot 79 today in a comp. All the practice I've been doing definitely had something to do with it but some of your course management tips really helped...thanks (now a 15 handicaper 😁)
Great! Video! I’m 57 and have followed you for a while now and am able to shoot under 80 thanks to your calming my game down and helping me add strategy to it. I feel more confident and am playing my best golf. Drives at 250-280 when needed or not! You’ve changed how I look at golf! Thank you!
I will rewatch this one a lot. I’m a 15 and I’ve been stuck there for a few years. It’s frustrating but I think this will help immensely and I’ll be playing like Jocko Nicholson in no time. Thanks BAUS
Been off with injury for a few months, tried playing through before taking a break and my scores sky-rocketed, high 80's/90's. Watched this in the morning yesterday (Wednesday 24th) before a 09:00 tee time, first game back after injury. Played the 9/10, zero hero shots, lay-up/safe rather than pin seek, and walked off with a 78, including a double bogey on the last (which hurt) and 2x 3 putts. Easily left 3-4 out there today, but i'll tell you something Matty....most enjoyable round of golf i've played in many months.
Love the video! Brought back what I could do in my teens. Over 50 now, trying to break the 80 mark. I am a shorter knocker than I used to be off the tee with an avg of 200-210…so hybrids or 3 wood into many par 4s. The strategies are great….esp the up and down shots. A must practice constantly and working to get those shots within 5 ft or less. Love your channel.
Love your videos bro. Started watching your videos' when I was trying to break 95. I've since gone on to breaking 86 now and constantly shooting in the high 80s and occasional early 90s as a bad round. Never thought I'd see the days I'd say that. I'll continue watching till I'm a single handicapper. Thanks bhuru
Bro I love u... ive been trying break 90. Today i shot 84..all becouse u said " only use the clubs i am " confidential" with " If i was a rich man id rain on u, alas im not. Thank u bro
Excellent advice start to finish. I was having way too many 3 putts so started practicing 3, 4 and 5 footers in my garage hitting 50 of each day after day. Record your progress. After 2 weeks you'll see a dramatic improvement. My last game I had 29 putts and no 3 putts. Shot 83 and I'm 71 years old.
I've been watching your channel consistently this season and I finally broke 80 for the first time ever! Even with my $2 swing. 😂Thanks to your course management advice.
I love how you break down the game. As a 20 handicapper who feels like I have to hit the perfect shot every time, I love how you tell us to just hit the field goal area and not worry that it's not in the hole.
great video! love the tips. I am a 11~12 hcp right now struggling to dip into the single digits. thanks for the laughs, the "im going to show you what happens when you don't hit a good shot" followed by you hitting a superb shot was very funny to watch unfold.
I'm back for a 2nd watch. This is the perfect video for me. I have been stagnated around the same level for years now. 15ish handicap. Took 3 lessons with a pro since last season and things hadn't been improving much consistently. It was like suddenly things clicked for me and my ball striking and wedge game improved a good bit. In just the past week I dropped 2 strokes off my handicap by posting low scores. 82, a 41 in golf league and another 82. I have good swing speed around 110 with driver but very erratic any given day. One of the biggest things for me is recognizing that the driver isn't working on a day and gearing down. I or 2 bad shots and it needs to go away immediately. One day 3 Wood was the next stop that worked 260 down the middle is a fun place to play from. Another day might need to go down to 4 iron. Whatever you have to do. Give yourself a chance to be around the green in two. Trying to fix driver on course and spraying into the trees is demoralizing, especially when you are trying to shoot a score. Wedge game is crucial. I know you advocate staying out of the 40-80 yard range but I have been money with the wedges. Having that wedge game helps take pressure of when you do get in trouble and have to punch out. Knowing you you can atleast hit the green majority of time and save bogey. I've been sticking some inside 5 feet, so satisfying saving par like that. Drill those 5 ft and under putts as much as you can. That's what can keep a really good round going, or can salvage a day you don't have you best game tee to green and still keep the score respectable. Either way they are crucial. Thats the starting point 5 ft and under putts. Then practice lag putts to get them within 5 ft. Then practice short game shots. Then irons then driver.
Another banger video Matty! Other most important tips from him are : NO hero shots and 100% commitment to every shot. Had my personal best round on Monday. Good shots - no thinking. Bad shots - tons of thinking, calculating and wondering.
1.5 handicap here, 3-5 last year, and 5-8 the year before that....this video is packed full of wonderful tips that I really think more golfers even low handicap ones could benefit from. Above all else though chipping and putting is critical, it can't be said enough.
I'm a 9 HCP with aspirations of scratch. I thought my short game was okay, until I played with scratch golfers and it's chalk and cheese. Me knocking a half decent strike to 8 feet instead of stiffing it to 3 feet most of the time like they do stuck out like a sore thumb.
I just got back into golf. stopped for about 8 years.I was a 11.8 cap before. I LOVE your way of explaining golf. You will mak eme more "confidential" lol Love it
Dude thank you so much. I’ve played for about a year and I just broke 90 for the second time today. Shot an 86 baby! It’s incredible how hitting 3wood fairway finders off the tee and just taking the few extra seconds to think about your shot shape / aim points makes your scores plummet. Thank you!!!
Best golf content on youtube 🤩👌 Have lately used toe down chipping on most chips where possible and today played safe clubs and left driver out almost entirely and hit 200-230m 5w and 3w off the tee mostly. today hit my first under 80 and by far 76 (+4) on my home course😍 8 GIR, 27 putts, no penalties. missed mostly barely today. ~11 hcp atm.
Current 14 handicapper here with only irons after following your break 100 and break 90 vids leaving my non confidential clubs out of my game! Thank you for all the help and I hope to add my fairway woods and driver back in one day to really cut down my score 🤣
I have watched several of your videos and I am amazed how good you are. Your swing is effortless yet produces good distance. I tried your tip but, being a 12 handicap I cannot control my shots well.
I am looking forward to becoming a single figure handicap within 2 or 3 years, thank you very much matty for all your videos, especially the ones that focus on the mental game and course management, that's what has really helped me and my game.
I watched this video and went out the following day for 9 holes in my senior league playing the white tees. I am a 14.5 hccp, I shot a 39 with 2 birdies on a pretty tough course. I'm going out tomorrow on another challenging course. fingers crossed that I can have another great round.
Great work Matty keep it up, I started the golf season as 12.9 handicap knowing I should be lower watching your vids has gotten me down to 8.8. Bit off the boil in recent weeks but this is hitting the mark for this weekends Captains Prize qualifier. I know we beat your nation in Rugby but you gotta get over to Ireland and play some of our great courses.
Similar story to me - got 86 with 8 pars, 1 birdie (!) but 5 doubles and 1 triple. I feel like the course management isn't too bad, but sometimes I just duff shots and it costs me a stroke and sometimes position. Hitting off sodden winter (NZ) fairways is so much harder than driving range mats. I kinda wish we had more grass driving ranges (or any!?)
I have never learnt to hit driver, probably because I've never had a lesson except to watch you tube and practice with the theory gained. I hit my tee shots always with small fade a 4 hybrid 22 degree to 200m (220 yards), I am a long hitter for an 18.8 handicap. My most reliable clubs are PW 135m ( 148 yards) 9 iron 148m (160 yards) and a 6 iron 180m (198 yards)
Matty - I am 8.7, I will watch this video-log 20 times between every round, i will attend the range and take lessons in between . . . . Cat 1 here i come 😊
I had never heard of toe down chipping until Matty Boom Boom entered my life as my new therapist and mentor. Now I look forward to practicing the short game - seeing the ball roll out with reliable spin makes me feel like a Baus. Thanks playa
I can verify. I’ve always averaged 270-290 with my driver for the last 20 years of my golfing life and I was a high cap most that time. The last 3 years I just focused on short game and now I’m a 4 capper. Don’t get me wrong my driver gives me the edge when it’s working well, but I still score well even when it’s off
15.1 handicap here. My driver is like a 20 handicap and the rest of my game is like a 5 handicap. I've been hitting irons off the tee and my overall scores have improved.
Thanks Bro!, my putting...has been fing awesome!.. thanks to you and Eric...AND... low scores after i realized i was not a pro( fing really?) So ..now i do not gov
This video spoke to me. I am currently an 11 index and trying to get to single digits. My putting is generally good, so not often would I 3 putt. My off the tee shots are better now. I am focused on the short game trying to get up and down more often. Thanks for your input. I am sure many are learning from your experience. Keep up the good work. I still don't understand why you are substituting the ball from when you hit it on the green to a black ball to putt. Is there a reason?
I'm going to watch the video, but my thoughts are 1. avoid penalty shots period. Play away from water and OB. 2. bunkers are bad, as is deep grass, but not as bad as water and OB, avoid if possible. 3. Play to the fat part of the fairway and the fat part of the green, don't take chances just to get a couple of yards closer to the green 4. Position your approaches below the pin if the green has a lot of slope 5. Worry more about speed than direction on long putts, you rarely miss the hole by more than a yard left and right, but if you get the speed wrong you can be 10 feet, or more, long or short. 6. Practice short putts of 8 feet and under religiously. 7. Don't try to hit the ball as hard as you can unless you are absolutely certain that you know where it is going to go. Be realistic about what shots you can pull off, and which shots give you trouble, avoid those. 8. Your score is hurt more by your poor shots than it is helped by your great shots. Play a little safer and you will shoot a better score most days than if you take a lot of chances.
18:58 I’m a 16 handicap trying to break 80, this video is for me!! sincere question: when you set up your field goal posts, do you think about the distribution of landing areas as having a faderrrr come up a little shorter than a pull or straight shot? I’ve heard that a spinny fade won’t fly as far
When I shot my 4th 59 I didn't do any of this stuff, I just swing 110% driver every hole and hit right at the pin every shot the goal is to hit it in the hole. Period. :) Every comment section needs a villian, yours are too positive.
Just arrived at 15 (from 17) mostly by improving swing. Oh but do I need Matty BB to remind me on course management. I scored my record round ever last week (like a 10.3 hcp Baus) and almost repeated it 2 days later. But didn't. One use case on that second round: At hole 9 I was tempted and tried something too risky, it was a pretty narrow hole with water all the way along the right. longish par 4. Hit a super 5 wood off the tee, making me think I could get a GIR with the only iron that can fade on me, 6 iron. And yes. Splash. Discipline vs Sensation. Argh. "if you hate boring, you hate scoring" I will tell myself 10 times before going to sleep each night till my next round 😀
If only I could keep the ball in play off the tee I’d be GOLDEN. Approach game is pretty solid (40% greens average) chipping is 8/10 for my level, and putting is pretty solid.
Tee off with a hybrid or something else, there are worse things than using an iron instead of a wedge on the second shot, like for example.. hitting out of the woods 😅
Matty boy! I wanna replace my driver and 3 wood in my bag to get consistent off the tee. What clubs do you suggest I hunt on Ebay? Does it matter if its a big brand or not?
Too broad a question. What’s wrong with the current club? Did you get a lesson and a fitting? Do you know now your specs to find a good club on eBay? I don’t suggest hunting for any unless you know your game deeply. I would suggest lessons and a fitting when you hit the ball better. Much less wasted time and efforts and money
First time I came to Thailand I thought I was hot poop. But then I played courses with 90 bunkers and not 30. Water everywhere. Jungle. Snakes. Lost balls. Greens where it mattered where you landed on them or missed them. It taught me how to play golf faster in 2 weeks than the previous 8 years. Straight is where it's at. Some you will convert to the way of the playa but some will cling to their driver like dog shit to a blanket. That's life.
Howzit Matt, I'm a 16 handicapper and drive the ball fairly consistently at an average distance of 275 yards. I'm 23, do you reckon I should hit my driver? Or should I club down?
Well first you need to understand if the driver is putting you in good or bad places. How many penalties are you taking per round? Where do the penalties come from? Are you allowing yourself 2nd shots that are unobstructed? 275 yards is great but not if it's in the scheisse. So you want to know if it's working for you. Consistent distance is not the key, the key is consistent positions. As a 16 handicapper I am gonna assume 36 putts average. Scoring average about 92 So you're taking 56 shots tee to green. I am assuming 16 handicapper, hitting 4 greens per round. Where are you all the shots tee to green? Where do the penalties come from, how many per round? Why are you not hitting greens in regulation with 275 off the tee? 14 missed greens - what's the reason? What's the up and down percentage? How many chips are finishing inside 6 feet? Are you short siding yourself? Are you behind trees and have tp punch out after your tee shot? Are you aiming for your shot shape into the greens? Are you picking the correct target for your shot shape? How many 3 putts? How many double chips? Which 5 distances are your most common approach distances? If it's penalties off the tee with the driver, then you should select driver when it is advantageous and work on playing away from hazards. Learn your driver shot shape and earn ot pick better targets with it. You can play away from hazards with the driver if you get the shot shape down pat. if the driver puts you behind trees or in deep stuff and you can't go for greens, then it's a problem club. Again, need to work on the shot shape and targets. If your approaches are not aimed to the right targets for your shot shape, then we can't hit greens. If you fire at pins without accouting for shot shape, you will short side yourself, leaving harder chips and bunker shots. If you don't know the distances you truly hit your clubs, you have trouble planning, you leave a lot short , plugged lies in bunkers short of the green. If you're 3 putting more than twice a round, you need to work on speed control. If you're missing inside 5 feet, you need to work on short putts. We can't diagnose a game based only on the driver.
I duff & fluff shots a lot. But I am also chipping from uneven surfaces and rough a lot. But I hit much higher green in regulation than people with my handicap. My theory is if I can get above 50% on green in regulation the chipping woes will be less important. I have had rounds above 50% but my average is not above 50% GIR. Most people in high handicaps do waste way too many shots around the green. Probably I could learn something from planning my shots with the goalposts and such a bit better such that I am on the fairway more often when I am chipping and work on my chipping.
As a 14.8 handicap I watch this with interest ... I probably average 38-40 putts a round so I def know that's where I need to start my improvement .. that and bunker play
Yeah around 80, you want to get those putts to 33-34 max but they are merely an indication of ball striking. Deeper analysis can see where things can be tightened a lot. But you can definitely start getting those putts down if you three putt a lot even though you have a few one putts
This video is for me except my 5 wood is probably the worst club in the bag. My card usually reads a bunch of pars and some 3 or 4s sprinkled in. So maybe I will leave that in the bag next round
"Going far left is a nipple-licker, it opens up the hole very nicely." (13:44). OMG, I'm dying, had to replay that one several times to make sure it heard him correctly LOL!
I like your content. Your very first comment 'we're going to use our best 225 yard club' and then you hit a fairway wood. The tee shots of the 15 handicappers are always driver except short doglegs.
i feel like golf scores can vary in range for tons of different variables and circumstances some could break 80 some days and not break 90 other days to say the least, if you play different tees or different courses it can range way more than that...its crazy
18.8 handicap here, been watching your videos all season, they work 100% I was 27.7 at the start of the season end of march

Heel up chipping is way better. 😂
Current 14 handicapper here with only irons after following your break 100 and break 90 vids leaving my non confidential clubs out of my game! Thank you for all the help and I hope to add my fairway woods and driver back in one day to really cut down my score 🤣
I like the way you describe and explain your strategy. I have used these advices to great benefit. My scores have gone from 86-92 to 78-83.
beast mode
Have enjoyed and learnt several snippets from your vids Matty. This one in particular is Golden.
This is exactly the video I needed. Been stuck around a 7-9 for the entire summer. Gotta channel the way of the playa! Thx as always Matty Boom-boom
Perfect timing Matty Boom Boom, I just became a 15.3handicap. I've got more work ahead of me.
You bring me back from 28 to 15 with your course advices. Thanks. Hope i can get down to 8 with these -target for 2025
excellent video. Nicely explained, your calm dimeanor makes not going for the long ball everytime cool. Take a lot of pressure off my swing.
Literally one of the best lessons ever. You should team up with Paddy Harrington.
Mir haben deine Videos eine Menge gebracht. Ich gehe jetzt mit einem anderen Blick über den Platz. Viele Grüße aus Germany.
Nice playa, keep thinking keep working
After 4 rounds of 86, I am just being patient for everything to gel and break 80 for the 1st time.. Thank you Matt... ABP playas
Since I started watching your videos I dropped my HC from 15 to 11 #roadtoscratch
Now I just need the 35 to 25 video!
That's the Break 100 and Break 90 series on this channel
35 to 25 is go for lessons
then make the par of the course par 99
That is the entire strategy.
easy peasy lemon squeezy
@@GolfSidekick The Baus has spoken.
Luv it as well. Still working on distance control with slops.
I love your matching shirt/hat combos. I'm jellies!
I can verify. I’ve always averaged 270-290 with my driver for the last 20 years of my golfing life and I was a high cap most that time. The last 3 years I just focused on short game and now I’m a 4 capper. Don’t get me wrong my driver gives me the edge when it’s working well, but I still score well even when it’s off
I'm really starting to dig Matty Boom-Boom. I love his confidentiality!
Taking this to the course tomorrow. Fantastic upload chief, one of your best! 5 seems a high target, let's see.
This is brilliant. Thank you so much. 👍🏾
15.1 handicap here. My driver is like a 20 handicap and the rest of my game is like a 5 handicap. I've been hitting irons off the tee and my overall scores have improved.
Tremendous content!! ⛳️
Ive taken on aiming for something in the distance rather than looking at a leaf 3 feet in front of the ball for a line, much more success
Thanks Matt. Great tips.
Awesome-thanks Matt
Dicky Shields ! Matty Boom Boom a cricket fanatic!
This is applicable to any experienced golfer no matter their handicap. Doing only one of these tips consistently and you will see positive results.
Precisely the level of thinking I enjoy - there is a lot int here, pick one at a. time, implement, rewatch.
LEGENDARY
Great video!
lekker video! some good tips I am looking forward to trying out on my next round
Thanks Bro!, my putting...has been fing awesome!.. thanks to you and Eric...AND...
low scores after i realized i was not a pro( fing really?) So ..now i do not gov
This video was created for me. Currently a 15.
Have you seen the old breaking 80 video? Could help with 1 more shot.... best of luck playa
16.2 but I'm counting it 😅
Brillant, My takeaway: Set fieldgoals, improve your skills, not distance.
Shot scope has a my strategy option for planning your way around the course
This video spoke to me. I am currently an 11 index and trying to get to single digits. My putting is generally good, so not often would I 3 putt. My off the tee shots are better now. I am focused on the short game trying to get up and down more often. Thanks for your input. I am sure many are learning from your experience. Keep up the good work. I still don't understand why you are substituting the ball from when you hit it on the green to a black ball to putt. Is there a reason?
It's just to help the viewers see the ball on camera.
yes - because i can playa
Watching GS has made me so much more confidential in my golf game. He's a true gang banger.
Added context: Google “Masters 2023: The genius trick of Augusta National's iconic 12th hole” from Golf Digest
So pick the best shot and then hit it perfect every time. 1 or2 putts and on to the next hole!
When I shot my 4th 59 I didn't do any of this stuff, I just swing 110% driver every hole and hit right at the pin every shot the goal is to hit it in the hole. Period. :) Every comment section needs a villian, yours are too positive.
Sir 59 for nine holes is not impressive
I need to work on my confidentiality!
Following your methods over the last 4 month I’ve cut 3.5 shots off the WHS and I’m now down to 10
I’m waiting for the “scratch to +5” series Matty. When I figure it out, you’ll be the first I tell. It may be as simple as “make more putts dummy”… 😅
26:36 Caddy superpowers noted.
"A little nipple licker" hahahahaha. One of your best, mate. Love it!
Great video, thank you
If only I could keep the ball in play off the tee I’d be GOLDEN. Approach game is pretty solid (40% greens average) chipping is 8/10 for my level, and putting is pretty solid.
Shorten driver?
Tee off with a hybrid or something else, there are worse things than using an iron instead of a wedge on the second shot, like for example.. hitting out of the woods 😅
Take your driver and make a very relaxed shot wich suppose to go only 150 yards....See what Happens!
Would be awesome to see Matt having a match with Rick Shields
I want to see Rick Shiels in a bucket hat along with a matching untucked sidekick shirt. 😂
Rick Shields ball striking + Baus course management = money. Shields course management = 😮
how do you guys calculate your handicaps? I'm a beginner.
where is this golf course please??
Bet taken!
Thanks!
I admit it, I love it when my boi gets preachy .
Preach Brother, preach!
Scoring average about 92
So you're taking 56 shots tee to green.
"consistent distance is not the key. Consistent position is the key.". Love this.
You’re giving away all my secrets.
I’m curious to see the difference between playa golf and pin hunting side by side, following the same tee shot decisions
My favorite part of the videos is when he says confidential, instead of confident 😂
"Titties to the target" 😂😂 that one is sticking in my mind.
Fantastic video!
Just sent this video to a bunch of friends and mentioned that quote. Wadda playa!
Lol.. came to the comments to confirm that i heard the same. Thanks 😂
Dickie shields is a strumpet 🏴
Is an OnlyPaige subscription the same as membership of the golf club of the same name?
I like your content. Your very first comment 'we're going to use our best 225 yard club' and then you hit a fairway wood. The tee shots of the 15 handicappers are always driver except short doglegs.
'left is a nipple licker'
Not true, some 15 handicappers can’t hit a driver consistently but can hit a fairway wood 225 yards and keep the ball in the fairway.
So what you’re saying is that you didn’t understand the concept of a 225 yard club?
i feel like golf scores can vary in range for tons of different variables and circumstances
some could break 80 some days and not break 90 other days to say the least, if you play different tees or different courses it can range way more than that...its crazy
Also mainly due to your shot dispersion being random and not aiming for all possibilities
