Several years ago I dropped the driver out of the bag. I use a 3W (42" and the rest graduate down normally) from the tee, 5W, 7W, 9W, 11W. Irons - 7i to PW (Ping Zing 2), 56, 60 (Tour Edge Hot Launch, very wide super easy to hit). For now, this works for me.
Great video, and sage advice. I’m playing 9 holes tomorrow with “half a bag” Ai-smoke mini driver / Ping G430 7 wood & 5 hybrid / 7 & 9 irons / 56 wedge and putter.
A high handicapper
Thanks for the great advice Andy! I have started on the path of being realistic and sold all my players irons to be replaced with game improvement ones. I’ve got Cleveland smart wedges to help around the greens. I used to be off 11 but those days are long gone. I got fed up after last weeks round and sold my p790 irons for Takomo 101 irons. I already have a 7 wood from many years ago. My putting is good as I have a synthetic grass green in my back yard. Living in Sydney it’ll take a while to receive my irons but I’ll be practice my wedges in the mean time. You have just reaffirmed that you need to put the ego away and start doing everything you can to help improve your game. Thanks for posting mate👍🏽🏌️
Another funny piece of advice here is he saying not to his drive off the tea. But my driver is my most reliable club, even though I am a high handicapper. At 55 years old, I have learned that advice that is good for most people is almost never good for me.
same. I'm a 24 and the driver seems to be the only club I can rely on lol, I do use a mini burner though
Excellent video Andy. Absolutely agree on having one wedge. I carry a 50 and a 56. The 56 is my go to for all shots around the green. Consistency and confidence is key 👍🏼
100% in agreement with you Andy. I have done it and golf has become a lot more easier and fun. Ego is to be left at the club house!
7 wood is my favorite club! I've carried one for, oh, more than 5 years now.
Andy you have hit the mark with this video topic!! Truly one of the most helpful videos! Thank you!
Got fitted for a putter a number of years ago best bit of fitting for a particular club in my bag. Ended up with a Taylor Made Spider consistent results.
Thanks for another great video and advice, a few months ago I returned to playing golf after 8-10 years. First, I had some lessons, then I had a basic club fitting to find my swing details,
before buying new clubs. Now aged in mid 60's with a slower swing speed, a few days ago I purchased Cobra T-Rail senior flex graphite set knowing I wouldn't use the 5 iron & also purchased a Cobra Air X 5 Hybrid and Cleveland Hywood 3+ 17 Deg. I was thinking of 7 wood and a wedge and looking to limit the number of clubs in my bag.
I don't care what others think of my set clubs its all about enjoying the sport, exercise and fun. Unfortunately mini drivers are too expensive for budget here in Australia but I would like one.
This video was perfect timing for me, thanks again.
A few years ago I switched to a set of hybrids from 3 through PW ... This year I upgraded and got a full 11 club set from 1 through PW which includes a 2 and a GW ... Absolutely love them and the 1 is my new favorite club
I've been thinking about doing the same.
What make of hybrids did you get and are they're many options?
@@RonnieAllan-uw8lx I bought a set of Lazrus ... Made in USA and they have a lot of options ... Very reasonable too
@@kevinsevernak7523hi Kevin are Lazarus a Direct to Consumer company?
Dear sir, I watched your clip, took your advice, bought a lovely 7 wood and hey presto! Thankyou so much for your advice….this 7 wood ‘side step’ has been a revelation
That’s great to read Stephen, hope you enjoy your golf 👍
Great advice once more Andy. Finally giving in to the fact that I need all the help I can get. Ping G430 7 wood, Cleveland Smart Sole Wedge and LAB putter all on my shopping list for the next year or so. Loving the videos and look forward to the next on every week.
"As ever." 😉Brilliant advice, and you've neatly packaged what you've been saying for years, Andy. I tick all those boxes and I've never enjoyed my golf more. All the best!
Thank you Andy. Your recommendations are spot on. Many people use golf clubs that they can’t handle. 😊😊😊
Absolutely
thank you so much- like the idea of one wedge for all shots
Your on the ball again Andy...excellent advice and explanation
Great tips, I have Cleveland Game Improvement Irons, a 5 and 7 wood with 1 hybrid. Good face balanced putter. The one piece of advice you gave I need to really try to take to heart is the working with 1 particular wedge. That is still where I lose the most strokes when something goes wrong
10.5 driver and a 5 hybrid are very important imo as a beginner who started 3 months ago
Hope they are working well bud
@@TheAverageGolfer just got a ping g400 sft second hand for 150€ today and love it so far!
@@irishmaverick3540 great driver
Buy the whole smartsole set of wedges and a Ping 7hybrid... you'll get all that you need..
Take note, you can hit the chipper at fullswing
This is my personal take, from someone who used to have a 30+ handicap now going down to single digit.
1. Forgiving Driver Ping G430max from my experience or get fitted for a Driver
2. 7 wood or 9 wood
3. Ping g430 7hybrid for a confident and reliable 100to150 yards shot
4. Cleveland smartsole Chipper.. which can also be used for 100 yard full swing
5. Cleveland Smartsole SW...
With just those clubs and a putter, a highhandicap can definitely score between 90 to 100 everygame...
This is based on my personal experience
I am 75 and play a 9.5 degree Adams blue driver. Ping G400 3wood. Cleveland 5 wood.
Then 3 through 6 hybrids from Cleveland. My7 through A wedge is Srixon ZX 5 with composite shafts. I carry a 60 and 54. I putt with a heavy putter.
I'm a 9 handicap and play at least 3 times per week.
Good video Andy. Some excellent points, especially re wedges. As lofts get stronger, bags get filled with all sorts of wedges and the choices can be bewildering. A shout out from me for LAB putters. They’re absolutely marvellous.
Glad the putter is working bud
Thanks And, as always simple no nonsense advice.. and by the way; you could save nearly 50% of your budget buying a mixed half set of essential clubs and not a full set plus 3 wedges!!
Andy. Recommend the same treatment for the putter as for the wedge. I consider my friends and I average golfers. Most of my friends have three or four putters and are always looking for another. They seem to switch them every round or two depending on how well it did the last time out. They never really get a feel any one of them. I have been using the same Ping putter since 1982. Always feels right and does what I ask it to do. Once you find one that feels right stick with it. It will come around.
I love #5. My 56* wedge is going to be my favorite club in my bag, whether it wants be or not.
5h (26 degrees of loft typically) is an interesting club. In my hands, and I have a similar club head speed to Andy, the ones I have tried (most recently Qi10) go way too high yet I struggle to consistently get enough height with my 4h (G410 lofted up to 23 degrees). This highlights that there are different designs of hybrid and you need to have one that suits your swing.
As for putters, I have recently had my first ever putter fitting. It makes a huge difference
The 5h is a real eye opener for me, very different from a 4 in performance attributes, far higher launching and higher spin despite only a slight increase in loft
morning, great video which is full of good advice for my particular game. I have a hcp of 30.9 and i have wilson launchapd irons which were custom fit for me. I am looking at a 7 wood to replace my 3 wood (wilson launchapd). thanks for the video.
I would also add to select a ball for your handicap and not what your buddies are playing.
Great advice! I just started playing with a 7 wood changed my game😀
They are magical!
Thank you Andy. I have now designed my ideal bag. It will be my reward when I break my 20 HCP. (Love the 7 wood - such a great approach club off the fairway)
Hope you get there bud
Great vid Andy thinking of a good sort out of my bag this winter when hopefully the clubs may be cheaper....
Great advice. As a low handicap player these can all be relevant.
Absolutely
My set up is Woods and hybrid are taylormade M2 2016, Driver, 5 wood, 5 hybrid, cobra irons 6-sw and 58 wedge.
my two favourite clubs driver and 5 wood
I have 5w, 7w, and 5 hybrid! Probably my 3 favorite clubs. Play a 6 hybrid as well. Great advice!
We are on the same page
10.5 driver A flex, high bore 3 and 5 wood. Wilson DEFY combo set 56 degree TM atv wedge Topflite cannon putter. Everything works for me good video
Age 65, relearning the game, I have 11.5 driver, 7 wood, 7i, sw, chipper and putter. Having more fun than the past only play 9 holes or par 3 courses
I play PXG Black Ops 10.5 with 45in shaft, Taylormade Stealth 5 wood, Taylormade Stealth 4 hybrid and Taylormade 5 DHY before the irons.
Makes sense....too many wedges just gets confusing! PW & a 58° work for me....driver, 4 wood and 4h, 5h and 6h. 7, 8 & 9iron and a putter. Lightens the load a bit!! Love the vid Andy.
@@craigfurlong1840 yeah I like that set up
Brilliant video Andy. I have taken your comment onboard regarding reaching the green before worrying about back spin numbers. Been considering the Cleveland Launcher XL halo irons but hesitant incase the spin is low.
Personally I don’t think it’s an issue
Thanks Andy. All your points are valid! Cheers!
Cheers Bob
Helpful and to the point!
Top of my bag is a 10.5° driver, 4W, 7W, then a GI 5 iron.
Andy. What is your take on using a standard driver but putting a shorter shaft in it?
Currently using an XR16 driver on a 3 wood shaft. Still their most forgiving driver in my opinion and it’s been a revelation. Makes the game so much more enjoyable when there’s (a degree of) control off the tee.
Absolutely 👍
The newer drivers are way more forgiving. Ai smoke.
@@maness2112 cheers, yeah I have heard good things about the smoke, might be tempted when prices come down with the next release. I’ve concentrated on the rest of the bag the last two years, upgraded to the rogue st 3 wood and hybrid that honestly feel like cheating they’re so easy to hit.
Great video and useful information.
My only gripe is the constantly shifting camera was mildly motion sickness inducing.
My bag 12 degree driver, 16.5 3hl wood, heavenwood, 5h, 6h. 6i-sw
I play off 5 and I do just about all these. I ditched my 3 wood for a strong 5 wood and strong 7 wood, 4 hybrid, and ditched 3 wedges for 2 (50 and 58).
100% agreed, I have a shorter high loft driver, 5&9 woods, 5-7 hybrids, player distance in the short irons, chip with a 50 sugar daddy, and an Allan putter.
Also suggest a Cleveland 58 smart soul sand wedge. I’m a 9.5 finally
We are on same wave length Jay!
Wise words Andy.
Cheers Ian
I do suffer a tad from G.A.S. and have been trying to temper my temptations. This post (and indeed most of your content) helps increase the chances that my “investments” are rational and helpful to my goal of improving my game. Btw, in part based on one of your previous posts, I did pick up (and paid for) a 7 wood which has quickly become my fairway club of choice and one that’s appreciated by the many worms saved from oblivion by the fact I got the damn ball off the ground and forward! 😊
I’m an admirer of your swing , I’m struggling with over swinging, do you have a routine to keep your swing so repetitive?thanks
Hi Andy I am 59 and a 7 handicap but my arthritis is getting worse I am thinking of ordering the ELEVENS HYBRID IRONS 3-PW and the Elevens wedges 50 and 55 ( currently have stealth irons 5 - PW , AW , SW ) then want a 4 wood and a 7 wood ( brand not sure yet ) happy with my putter and Happy with my Driver I might go to a mini Driver something at 11.5 degrees approx. interested in your thoughts awesome video Andy your awesome and i love your channel cheers from Vulcan Canada
So true - my high handicap 1/2 set selection is
Ping G30 Driver set at 11*
Ancient Dunlop 5 Wood 21*
Mizuno JPX 6 hybrid 28*
Srixon Ad403
(8 and PW)
Taylormade MG 56*
Ping Anser Putter
Without these EASY clubs - golf would be so much less fun !
Evaluate your game on the shots you actually play not the occasional very good shots you play once in s while 😂
Very good final comment
Driver 7 wood 9 wood 26 degree hybrid then 6 iron top of my bag and I'm 45 and an 11 handicap. More people need hi loft fairway and hybrids in the bag
I have an Allan fitting tomorrow. What do you think of the new PXG Tour balls?
I have an old battered Ping G5 7 Wood and it’s staying in the bag.
I will buy a $500 putter the day after I win the Powerball lottery. I play with a $22 putter that looks just like the ones from a mini-golf course. I did put a $17 Winn grip on it though. I do have some of the clubs that you suggested in the video, but since I can't hit irons, I have all hybrids -5 thru PW, and 3,5,7, and 9 woods. I use an Acer Flipper and Chipper around the greens. My driver is a 44" Maxvert 12° driver.
You’ve certainly helped my game. In fact, you filled my bag and emptied my bank account. This season I’ve gone with Cleveland Halo irons 6-gap, G425 5 wood, 7 wood, 5 hybrid and Cleveland wedges. I tried the CBX4’s but preferred the Full Face 2 over the 4’s. Went with 52 & 58. Couldn’t be more pleased. Haven’t replaced my G425 driver yet, I do plan to try the Taylormade Mini. Thanks!
What do you suggest to use instead of a driver/mini-driver off the tee?
5 wood
Great video as usual Andy
Cheers bud
Great suggestions!!
Glad you think so
Have (2) drivers: BB23 & Callaway Epic Max
Pitching Wedge: 45*
Eleven 8 iron: 35*
Rouge 5 Hyb: 27*
Epic 7 wood: 21* ---great club!
Ping 3 Hyb: 19*
Should I get a Eleven 3 iron: 18* OR a Epic 5 or 4 wood??? Thanks 🙂
Why two drivers?
@@TheAverageGolfer it was a good buy. I traded my Old Ping G400 & Ping G400 3 wood for it. Upgrade for technology
Love your channel but even though my handicap has gone up now that I'm in my 70's, saying that higher handicaps shouldn't have a driver, well, I disagree. Get fit for the right mix of clubs. Today, with the exception of one hole, I hit my driver well. I agree with hybrids and game improvement irons. Not everyone needs a 7 wood. That would be dependent up fitting and gap and mix of clubs. Also, getting the right ball. Don't assume that a soft ball is the best one.
I have a mini driver, 7 wood, and hybrid. Trying to make golf easier, not more difficult!
Sounds good to me
I also have a mini driver and 7 wood.
Looking to add a hybrid as well. What loft is your hybrid and where do you find you use it the most around the course?
Thanks in advance.
I hit my hybrid from the rough…it gets me out every time.
Very good points, loft is your friend…
It sure is
Is that a pasture you're hitting balls in? I know cattle are quite sturdy creatures but what if one gets hit in the eye or something?
No it’s a golf course
How do you use a 54 deg wedge around the green for different distances?
By varying the length of your swing
2 or 3 wood as a mini driver can work too
What about the Chipper Andy?
‘Any wedge and get familiar with it’ 👍
As a lefty, 7 woods seem hard to find, i use an extra hybrid instead
That’s a shame
Amazing video as always Andy!
What about golfballs?
Thanks, we will take a look
Good video Andy , thought you might include a 9 wood but I suppose 5 hybrid is similar, although I don’t get on with Hybrids
I am filming a test with 9 wood next week
Look forward to it . Just ordered a Ping G430 today . If it’s as good as my Ping 7 wood I will be well happy
@@stephencarlisle3743 the ping will feature in the test
Hi, i used to have a 9 wood in my bag which is very easy to hit and launch for 160to170yards..
But comparing it to a hybrid, the dispersion will become a factor...
If you are just a beginner and trying to break 100, its a big help.. but if your trying to break 80, a hybrid will help you more due to a narrower dispersion pattern
Great content.
Will look into all suggested. 💪🏽
Glad it was helpful!
You nailed it, Andy. You offer the best advice for the average golfer on UA-cam, cheers and all the best to you.
Much appreciated
I never buy fair ways because I can’t use my driver but I feel like fair ways are ever harder to hit with them being off the deck, I can’t imagine I can use them
The only thing missing is a Ping chipper - absolute cheat stick.
Sad to see you not using a LAB putter any more!
Don’t be sad, be happy 😃
Need to get my driver out another 10%
I wonder when we'll see affordable zero torque putters?
The more that they become the ‘norm’ the price should drop, but let’s be honesty standard putters are now ridiculously expensive
Now, my PXG Allan was $375 new. As a repeat customer, PXG gives me a discount even on the new Allan
7 heaven
Thx And!
Cheers Miles
Modern marketing in golf continue on their campaign. As lofts get stronger, we can no longer hit the long irons. Manufactures know golfers pay more for woods and hybrids.
Hybrids are the worst possible clubs for my game. Everyone keeps talking about how they’re important and they’re easier to hit. They certainly are not easier for me. I go for my four iron to my five wood. And every time I try to put a hybrid in the mix in any spot, it’s absolute garbage. I’ve been trying to integrate a hybrid for five years. I think I’m about to give up. It just does not work for me.
Think you need to change your channel name to "Used to be the average golfer" 🙃
Still the same issues as every golfer Dan, the title has never had anything to do with ability 👍
I just.
Ordered the square to square Putter. There only $200 0 torque. We'll see how it does.
Hope it goes well bud

I think you should not worry about the hybrids if it doesn’t work for you. Go with clubs that work for you.
@@MrJohnr47 Amen, I proved it again today. Stop trying to fit into the algorithm !!! General advice is NOT for me.
