THE BEAST FROM THE EAST!! (Solo overnighter wild camp)

- Been a little while since I did an overnighter. With the beast from the east covering everything in snow, it'd have been crazy not to do a stealth wild camp!
Thank you for watching

Nice video that. One tip that you may or may not practise; never make a direct ingress route to your camp location, lie up in a secluded spot for up to 30 minutes observing any signs that your camp location has been compromised. Then, circle your camp by some 50 metres or so entering your camp before completing the circle so more horseshoe shape. That way, IF someone or something is tracking you they'll follow your horseshoe giving you much more chance of hearing or seeing your trackers before they see or hear you! Hope that makes sense, but its taught as a Military Escape & Evasion Tactic.
Hi, wow some fantastic advise there my friend! I shall most definately use this in future, especially in some of the smaller woodlands I frequent as i have to be more stealthy in some than others. Really appreciate your advise, thank you very much indeed👍🏻😊👍🏻
Here's wishing you a great weekend

Black Country Woodsman I no mate. I'm going for my F. A. C. Been shooting now for about two year's now. Hope too save the money up this month. Looking forward to having a rifle at home. An going around England too shoot at different ranges. Would you do a review of your hammock I could give it a go. Thanks for ya time Mike.
I enjoy your videos; good knot demos and well rigged gear. You folks across the water don't usually get weather like you have had during early 2018; reminds me of western Canada.I live in eastern Canada now where winters are more like yours though a little colder. Right now we're in the banana belt of Canada with single digit minus C temps while the west shivers through another "polar vortex". Lots of wind but not bad in sheltered woods. At 74 I don't camp much but I'm often in the woods cutting firewood and I boil a kettle and have a cuppa'.
Hi Frank👋🏻😊🌳🌳🌳
You're right my friend about our weather, we seem to be getting our true seasons back. For many years its been a crazy mix of most the seasons thrown into one day- every day...
Wow it must be lovely to live in Canada, i do have relatives over there but sadly never been over.
Respect goes to you sir for getting out there and enjoying your beatiful woodlands and forests. You can get as much out of mother nature just sitting there in peace sipping coffee as someone thats camped out for a few days...Utter bliss
Thank you so very much for watching and your kind words Frank, it means a lot to me 👍🏻🌳🌳🌳🕊🌳🌳🌳
All the very best to you
Mike
I’m laying up in bed today as I’m not well. So I’m off work today feeling blue & im going through your videos. Makes me feel better watching them, loving the sounds of the wind surfing the tree tops. You can’t bet that. Cheers 🥂 all the best Andy
Hi Andy, hey mate im sorry to hear you're not well my friend. Ah Andy that's so very nice of you to say🤗👍🏻....
I hope you are feeling much better now and that you have a lovely weekend ahead.
Thank you very much for watching and I'm honoured that you like watching my vids🌳🌳🌳👍🏻🌳🌳🌳
Get well soon Andy
Take care
All the very best to you too👍🏻😊👍🏻
🌳🌳🌳Mike🌳🌳🌳
I like your way of thinking, covering your tracks. I often do that even if its for a day camp. Sods law with the deer after you put the camera away, in my walk in the snow video a fox ran by after I put my phone away. Glad you feeling better. Cheers, Rick
Rickalls Outdoors Hi Rick ...Yeah we always have to be 360 aware and forever watching we don't leave attention grabbing clues to our whereabouts
Typical isn't it mate...Always just when you've stopped filming something cool happens lol
Thanks for watching mate
Have a great week

That place looked great the last time I saw you camp there, but this time it is beautiful with the snow. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for the experience. God Bless you!
Nice one Mike, I like the way you show knots and hitches slowly to show how they are done, I am sure that will help a lot of folk, I also like how when you 360 you pan slow enough that we can see things well rather than a blur. all the best.
Hi Mate thank you, I thought I may as well start showing the knots i use in setting up, that way it may help someone out that's new to wild camping. It's something I'll do I future vids too.
Thank you👍🏻 hahaha yes the good old 360° shot... it's a real nightmare trying to keep steady enough and not look as if I'm drunk 🤣 Tbh i could do with getting a tripod upgrade!
Thank you for watching and the kind words as always...Hope you've had a nice weekend

Good to see you back out again Mike...loved the dear story :-)
Rob Kane Hi Rob, I'm back at last hahah...Just a 24hr sickness bug
Yeah I believe I'm wrong about the deer being an albino, someone said they are very rare and that it was probably a white deer...Whatever, it was absolutely beautiful
Glad you enjoyed

Not that long ago I went to a spot I had camped a couple of times and right at the spot where my footprint of my tent had been Half a tree had fell and landed right where I slept. If it had went when I was there I would have been squashed like a bug, I guess it's down to luck and I've been a lucky little so and so all my life. It looked like a strong live tree too. I would never have expected it to come down.
Great video as always mike👍 glad to see u ok!☺ some crackin views of the woodland looks a lovely place👍lookin forward to the next one! Atvb bud bounda!

You're the Beast. Whatz poppin Big Country? No Fire? Total Animal.
Did a over niter last week in my home state. New Jersey. Before that it snowed like crazy. I got outta town for a bit while we got hammered with snow. Hit Florida, 80 degrees, then Texas, 30-70 degrees. Stayed in Texas 1 week.
Back to Jersey 1 day and did my over niter in the snow. It was awesome. Stealth camping for me too. Keep Cracking Brother.
Hey hi Gangster👍🏻😊👍🏻🌳🌳🌳🌳
Yeah as you know mate no fire most of the time as I'd give my whereabouts away and have the landowner on my case heheh! 😂
Awesome, you really do have such beautiful places to wild camp over there!
Thanks brother, 🤗 and thank you for watching and your kind words...

Nice Deer story Mike, I have had a great stag experience myself where I was up on a mountain called 'the cobbler' and I was plodding through fifteen foot snow and as I took each step I would sink in up to my waist. I had been doing this for a while concentrating on the snow when suddenly I felt a presence and looked up to find a big stag doing the same thing as me only going at right angles across my path we were ten feet away from each other, I could smell his breath, we just eyeballed each other for a while then headed on our way it was fantastic, all the best Mike.
One of your most beautiful videos and glad I watched it again last night as I was in the midst of placing a DD order. Now I’m frozen between the 3x3 with a Frontline regular and the 4x4 with a Frontline XL. Can’t make up my mind. I won’t be carrying anything far so not too worried about the 4x4s extra weight. And I’m only 5’6”. On the other hand I’ve got an aging body and I need all the comfort I can get. Appreciated your long conversation about this with one of your other viewers. Still can’t decide.
Hi Diana, 🖐🏻😊🌳🌳
Thank you yet again for watching and the kind words👍🏻😃....Personally i have the standard frontline and the xl version...Ive used both hammocks a lot over the past few years....Myself I'd definately go with the Xl frontline. No need for a ridgeline to hold the bug net up like with the standard. The hoops on the xl are fantastically easy to apply and spread out the hammock loads. In the xl frontline i can get almost a diagonal lie and that makes for a much more comfortable sleep as theres no unnatural bend in the knees, or a need to put something under them. The way i see it is, the less ridgelines you have the less chance you have of water ingress...If i was buying a new tarp id buy the new dd 3.5x3.5 as you prob already know a 3x3 tarp really needs to be in a diamond config to guarantee enough coverage of the hammock underneath. So in purchasing the 3.5x3.5 you can have it in an A' frame config and have adequate coverage without having to use the diamond set up.
Hope this makes sense lol..

Great video, thanks for taking us along, we have a few albino fallow deer about my neck of the woods....they do stand out don't they.

Hiya Mike, yep have been very close, they're quite startling at night in the headlights of a car, or worse in the woods with a head torch! They must scare some people mad!
When I'm going through the recommendations and one of your posts come up I can't resist. I enjoy your posts more than any other bushcrafter.wild camper on UA-cam, I can watch them over and over. Thank you so much for your great films Mike.
Grate to see you back out mate, cracking video buddy.
GO Out Gibbo Hey there😊👍🏻 Ah cheers my mate....I just had to get out and do an overnighter in the snow.. Couldn't resist!!!

great vid.glad you are better..i have not been out camping but adding and changing my kit ,its only when you get out there that you see what you need and what you dont...i have bought a hammock and not tried it yet and is off to buy a tarp tomorrow then me and the dog will be off again soon....on the last camp we did we heard barking but thought it was a fox but hearing what you said you are right what it was....keep the vids coming.take care.Toni and Toby.
Toby Girvan Hi both glad you are getting your gear sorted...Cant beat a hammock and tarp👍🏻
Ha yes it's hard to tell between certain calls/barks foxes and muntjack deer...Jays and squirrels lol.
I have really bad hearing and I
do struggle loads tbh.
Hey thank you very much, that's kind of you ...Glad you enjoyed watching

The Beast from the East is no match for the Black Country Woodsman...a mismatch if ever there was one lol. The albino/white deer must have been quite a sight Mike. I have heard of them where you are. The things we see and hear when out on our own. I have seen an albino badger but not a deer...yet. Good to hear the Munjac's. I really like your DD tarp and hammock set up. It works well with the Jura. One of the things that I really like is your love of your surroundings. You are more than happy to sit back and soak it all in without the need for a radio or music. Another great all nighter mate. Thank you for taking us along. Paul :)
Paul Outdoors Hannah Hi Paul... The deer had reddish pink eyes that's why i say albino...Im the first to admit im no wildlife specialist but just enjoy being out there like nothing else..Albino badger! How cool is That!!! Wow did u manage to get any pics? How cool..
Mate I think we are very similar like that...To me it totally defeats the purpose of being out there if ya going to have the radio on 👍🏻😲🌳🌳🌳🤣
Thank you for watching and the kind words Paul
Have a great evening

Mike
Black Country Woodsman My pleasure Mike. I will keep my eyes peeled for an albino deer around here. I didn't get a picture of the albino badger as it was a complete suprise as I saw it in woodland during the middle of the day. I think it was resting up above ground in the quiet until I rumbled through and disturbed him before he shot off along the track and back down in to the sett. Never seen him since even when watching the badgers emerge from the same sett on a number of occasions since. I agree mate...leave the radio at home. Wishing you a great evening also and a great rest of the week. Paul :)
Great video this one Mike and a cool set up you’ve got there. Glad to see you kept warm throughout the night. Pretty keen to try the hammock myself particularly to get of the ground where snakes and creepy crawlies dwell in the Aussie bush. Cheers mate.
Hi Jason, certainly was a cold one!!!!! Ah thank you my mate...Very kind words as always, they really are very much appreciated especially from you👍🏻
Haha yes the bugs and critters over there must make for very interesting wild camping! We have it easy over here with things like that I guess....The only thing I have to be weary of is being spotted by the land owners!
Can't wait to see your new footage mate
Take care and thanks again for being so nice
Mike
One time up in the mountains I had been going through deep snow and with every footstep I sank in to my waist and it was really slow going, I was busy doing that when I felt a presence and looked up to find a big stag doing exactly the same thing and our paths had converged we were only about six feet from each other and I froze and watched him while he looked at me, I could smell his breath we looked at each other for about ten minutes like that then he stated plodding on and so did I what a wonderful experience, but An Albino one. wow, amazing.
Hi there, ah wow wonderful! It really is a magical experience isn't it when moments like this happen...Its just a shame we never have a camera to hand, people can either believe us or not..It doesn't really matter as we ourselves know it's true and shall never forget wonderful moments like these...👍🏻😊👍🏻🌳🌳🌳

It's good testing your stealth skills out Mike being so close to the landowners. I love that sensation of doing a good stealth camp. One thing I look out for when long walking are fields remote, with fresh grass, no tracks and no livestock. You can be sure the farmer isn't checking in the morning that's if their is no woodland around. Digging that Ray Mears sack and the quality relaxation. Good going. All the best. Mark
Hi Mark, yes mate agreed you can't beat a good stealth camp....Its inevitable that over the years no matter how stealthy we are, that we shall get caught. I personally think that the most obvious way of being caught is dogs. No matter how stealthy we are, our scent is easily picked up. Especially if you're partial to a good fry up like me! 🌳🌳👍🏻🤣👍🏻🌳🌳

Good on ya mate...getting out in all that weather...hard core!...loved the Deer story, i nearly had a dog taken by a huge black bear just yesterday...but i managed to run him off...i was hiking a steep grade with my dogs, stopped to catch my breath and he came out the brush just beside us heading straight for my chocolate lab....i bluffed charged the bear yelling at the top of my lungs and he backed down...i have had several close calls with bears in the past...love your hammock setup...be well!...woods
Hi MT, thank you very much👍🏻😊👍🏻 Wow I'm glad we do not have bears to watch out for! That must have been a terrifying experience!!!! Is that your 1st encounter like that? Glad you nor any of the dogs were hurt my friend....🌳🌳👍🏻🌳🌳

😂 you thought you were hallucinating, funny that Mike. Mate hats off to you sleeping in a hammock in that weather. Another great video bud, thanks for sharing.
Ant.
Hi, I think I prefer hammock camping in the winter as it gets me off that icy woodland floor. Lovely and warm in that hammock, if not a little too warm at times.
Thank you Ant that's nice of you my friend😊 glad you enjoyed watching, really nice to hear from you mate

the ray mears pack is £170 and its 90 litres in total, your right mike you can get a really good military pack for less than that it is a really nice pack though, another great vid 10/10 mate
Hi Tony, I've been using the Ray Mears/ leaf cutter pack quite a while now and I've grown to really like it for the winter come spring camps. It's holding up well but like you mentioned for such an expensive pack it should. Yeah a short or long back burgen is pretty much on a par with it.
Glad you enjoyed watching...Thank you very much again for your kind words my friend

Black Country Woodsman hi mate.....I’m afraid my channel is pretty disappointing!😂😂, I’m not very tech savvy, I think I’d like to make videos of my trips, just not sure how to upload etc and go about it, I’ll have to look into it🤔, yeah I’m from Walsall so was nice to hear a fellow ‘local’ accent when I watched your videos😊👍🏻, atb mate🙂✌🏻
Great upload. But I prefer my dd frontline hammock. Which got its first christening this time last year. When I met up with west yorkshire bushcraft group. But I still need a underblanket lol.
Hi Damien, cool mate each to their own👍🏻
Oh yes most definitely, I'd personally recommend not to get the dd underblanket as the bungie cordage on mine has broken under hardly any stress/ tension, very poor indeed.
Thank you very much for watching Damien

I couldn't help myself either, had to get out in the cold that weekend. pity I didn't get the snow you got , that was the best! I did get a ton of roe deer though. Plenty space unter that tarp, like a ballroom! Nice going, keep em coming, you pick great spots..
Hey there my friend I've only just read your comment and I apologise that I've some how managed to miss it.
The 4x4 tarp is a real beast yes, tons of room under that, I was just being cautious that I had no snow drifting up and underneath the tarp and onto the hammock.
Thank you again for watching

That's cool dude!
I did head out when this happened, but only a daycamp, luckily I am far enough outside of London that the snow settled for a few days, if I knew the night before that I would have been off from work I would have whipped the Lavvu out for an overnighter (at that time it was still the only tent / sheltert I had!), but only got the news in the morning from the boss man that he couldnt drive his van out.
Im super stoked that I watched this vid without skipping too much (not that I do that on your channel mate, but these days dont have much time lately) because I have been meaning to ask you to do a gear show and tell as I really dig your rucksack!! and here it is haha, I wasnt surprised though because I was looking at that one on Ray's site (although I cant afford it) - looks like a sweet pack, I hate the fact that I just cannot find a decent large front pouch that attaches to Molle straps!! I need something at least 7-10 liters capacity but all the ones online are just a few cm's deep, maybe 20cm high and 10-15cm wide ... not worth it.
Cool vid man cant wait till your next upload. by the way, remember my recent vid where I gave you that shout out? the one with the French f1 overnighter? Well you gave me luck bro, its now at 31k views!
Cheers my brotha from anotha mutha
Chris
Hi Chris,
I enjoyed your video and thank you again for the shout out, was very kind and thoughtful of you my friend...I really do appreciate it
🌳🌳🌳👍😃👍🌳🌳🌳
Hey I'm exactly the same as you, I just do not get the time to watch other peoples video's and that's a damn shame.
Ah yes I'll do a 'show and tell' at some point...Though I have recently done a video where I talked about my most valued kit👍 Would be good to see you doing this Chris.
Ah yes the leaf cutter pack is a workhorse, love it and I could only afford it due to funds coming my way from bad times, oh well something good comes from something bad. A short back burgen would be a nice alternative to the leaf cutter.
Hey good to hear your vid is getting lots of views, hey nothing to do with me...Just a fine video of yours getting the positive attention it deserves
See ya later brother from another motha

you ever look at expanded world map? S. england in latitude is slightly north of the US./Canadian border. never been to UK., but tells me it's DAMN COLD there in winter. guessing, winds off atlantic make it even worse cold. yes, you would be crazy not to do an over nighter here in this video! Minnesota, USA. friend says gets down to -20 thru -50 (F) there.... now that's cold to me. this was a very good camp / very good video too. i really enjoyed it! thumbed up.
Hi Martina👋🏻😊 We are quite fortunate here to have the gulf stream, along with similar warm air currents... helps keep Ireland and the western coast of Great Britain a couple of degrees warmer than the east. I really love the cold weather and that's when I up the quantity of my wild camps👍🏻 Of course I appreciate all the season's and see the magic each and every one holds. Wow that's awesome! Minus 20 for your friend, then again it's no fun for the elderly or folk that have to travel good distances for work etc.
So glad you enjoyed watching Martina, thank you🤗....Plenty more vids planned for the cooler months ahead👍🏻🌳🌳🌳

Blimey. I worked outdoors for the whole beast and it wasn't nice. Can't think how I'd stay warm camping in it. You must have good cold weather genes lol. Tips to stay warm on winter camps?
Nice winter wideo. Beautiful trail. Greetings and wish you a nice weekend.

Please Mike, end my torture: I spent large parts of this video trying in vain boggling my eyes to try and make out the label on your heavy-duty fleece. What, oh what is it? Thank you, if you get this more than a year later! - Another Michael (and fan) :)
Hi Mike, 👋🏻😊🌳🌳🌳
Heheheh! I purchased the jacket from Go outdoors the retailer mate, I've not seen them in there since. The make is regatta, maybe it's worth a look on regatta's website or even checking amazon👍🏻 The coat has a thick (black) Fleece on the inside, all pockets have it also...There seems to be two or three jackets that are similar to this one but the lining is way thinner and the price is lower. I think it cost around £40 at the time Mike...Good luck in finding one 👍🏻
Thank you very much for watching and commenting

Great video lad, how do you rate the jura 2 sleeping bag and did you use a underblanket.
Just sitting here wondering...if the landowners where you camp, sit down at night with a good cup of tea and watch your videos. 😳😉 cant imagine that they'd care...your very careful. But it would be funny.
Beautiful as always Mike, you were well covered there, I've got the DD Multicam 3x3 ready for when I get my frontline, but now thinking it will be too short! Nice pack that, looks well comfy when your wearing it. I see you have some tree huggers are they the Gimars ones? Look similar. That frontline XL is massive, I was just going to get a normal frontline, how tall are you Mike? Absolutely excellent viddy that I watched in one hit from start to finish. Keep well. Lee.
Burton Outdoors Hey hi Lee👍🏻 the 3x3 is exellent and a favourite with many...Me included, but in bad weather the 3x3 over a hammock needs to be pretty low to the hammock and in the diamond configuration. See if you have it in an A frame config the tarp only just covers past the ends of most hammocks. Plenty of folk use just the 3x3 but I like the extra coverage with the 4x4 plus don't forget you've got the weight difference too. Your 3x3 will do you fine 👍🏻
I'm 5ft 11" mate...If you have the cash mate I recommend the XL frontline as it really is a fantastic hammock and far easier to set up with the hoops instead of bungie cord and ridgelines.
Nah mate i don't think they are the same make...cant remember the brand tbh
So glad you enjoyed watching mate

Black Country Woodsman You look taller :-) I'm 5.11 too, just thought the XL is for tall wide dudes. Cheers for the info Mike. Lee
Big blokes prefer it...I always prefer a big hammock, can't stand it when the sides squash in. I can lie on a decent diagonal and get an almost flat sleep. A brill hammock.....
Take a look at this mate, very cool:
ua-cam.com/video/oOpqD-lY9K8/v-deo.html
Black Country Woodsman I looked at that link but it was a Warbonet hammock! Deep going for a DD and think I will prob get the XL as the poles push the sides out Yeah? As the normal frontline doesn't, is that correct? Don't want to get the one that scrunched me up rather get the proper kit from day one even although the XL weighs more. Cheers, Lee
Just subbed and made you one thousand. good vid.

I have never been a tv watcher and don't own one but I watch a lot of youtube and I find posts like yours far more interesting and well made than any commercial tv station could produce, for me nothing beats ordinary peoples self made documentaries and posts you beat Ray Mears [although he is good too] hands down and as for Bear Grylls, he is just not my cup of tea at all. tv shows lead you by the ring in your nose, it feels creepy to me any time I see it.
Wow!!!!! Now that really is most kind of you!!!!! How lovely of you to say that!!!! 🤝 I'm just a bloke that loves to stealth wild camp. I'm no survivalist or bushcrafter and my knowledge on wild edibles is very limited indeed. What i am is a bloke that loves and respects mother nature, and also loves nothing more than to escape modern day drudgery. Continuously disheartened at how our species is doing a fine job of destroying the beautiful planet we live on etc...Especially how here in England a vast amount of the land is owned and fenced off displaying signs of 'keep out' &' prosecution' in what should be free for the common man to roam and of course respect...
You are so very kind
Believe me I really do appreciate your words of kindness....🌳🌳👍🏻🌳🌳

no1 should b allowed 2 own a wood
Hi mate, hey it'd be lovely to own a woodland or forest wouldn't it. But then again I believe that the people of the land should have the right to roam and enjoy the beautiful countryside, within reason. But only as long as people respect the woodlands and not neglect.
All the very best, thank you for watching and have a good week ahead
