  • Hi, well finally im out again and wow, how ive been needing to get out and do another overnighter!
In this video im visiting one of my favourite winter camp locations armed with a 4x4 tarp and hammock. A lovely fresh morning and everything has a fine dusting of frost as i make my way into the private woodlands.
It's great to have you join me, and i thank you very much for watching. You all are appreciated and i wish you all the very best that life has to offer.

I've been watching your videos when I go to bed for the last few weeks, and they've been so helpful in helping me relax and tone down my anxieties, especially with present circumstances around the world. I've also shared them with friends that are getting a similar benefit from watching. Your videos remind me that better times are around the corner. Thank you very much for taking us with you on your wild camps. 👍

Hi there, ah my friend its awesome to hear that you've found some peace in my video's, its one of the main reasons I do them...Yes you're right better times are round the corner as dark times can only last so long. What lovely words from you thank you, believe me you are so very much appreciated. I look to the blue skies above and find that they give lots of comfort, nearly as much as the woodlands do..There's always beauty to be found even when we're not able to be where we want. I'm sure wherever you are right now there's something that can bring comfort and peace to your kind soul. Amazing the positive energy that can be transferred to the mind and body, I often listen to Spotify or UA-cam to rainfall in woodlands forestry/ sounds of nature to ease my anxiety etc.
Hopefully I'll be out doing a little video on a very local woodland walk within the next few days, basically just to say hello and share the woodland serenity.
Thank you for watching, stay safe and well
      All the very best

That's an ingenious little setup Mike, lots of room. Very cool. Ideal for not being seen because of the many angles, like the old dizzle camo on battleships in ww1. , That's what stands out about a tarp from a distance, the long straight lines, this setup fixes that.

Great video Mike, I really look forward to every one of your uploads. Awesome setup, that’s the best use of a 4x4 I’ve seen, now I know what to do with mine. When you called the woods Hollywoods I thought they were located somewhere in Hollywood Birmingham lol. There are some woods near the Lickey Hills I think that my grandparents would take me and my sister as kids, great memories. Your intro and logo are looking super good mate. Awesome job, awesome video. Take care. Your friend Jason.

Fantastic set up with the tarp & hammock Mike. You always capture the best sunsets in videos. I really think I need to get a UCO candle lantern, it looks super cozy at night, rather than torchlight. It's a pity that a lot of English Woodlands are in private hands. Anyhow keep stealth camping and thanks for bringing us along. Cheers Lee.

Hi Lee, hey thank you very much mate thats really nice of you to say👍🏻🌳🌳🌳Ah yes Lee the UCO candle lantern is fantastic, instantly turning any tarp or tent set up into a far more homely feeling place with that ambient glow.
Yes my friend, its the minority that ruin it for the majority, and also the wealthy denying the common man of access to the beautiful woodlands that all respectful folk should have the right to enjoy.

The 4x4 tarp makes a great shelter. At my age I might even consider the 5x5 since most of my woods adventures are accomplished thanks to an old "quad" so weight isn't so much a problem, I often put up one of the cheap plastic tarps when I'm working on firewood. Keeps both me and the quad dry.I like your little table idea; think I'll work on a variation of that. As always I enjoy your videos and contemplative respect for the woods. Thank you! Our access to woods and relative freedom make stealth less relevant but people don't respect nature as they should.

    • @BlackCountryWoodsman
      @BlackCountryWoodsman  5 років тому

Hi there Frank, ah cool i used a cheap plastic tarp for years and they definately 'get the job done'
Thank you mate the table isn't my idea, i find i use it more and more as it saves my back and knees alot of aching heheh👍🏻
It's lovely to hear that you enjoy my video's 🌳🌳🤗🌳🌳
Yes you have the right to roam as here in England i do not, such a shame...What with the wealthy buying up the land and erecting fencing around our beautiful woodlands, and displaying threatening signs of prosecution if entered. Also as you mention, there's an awful lot of disrespect towards our beautiful countryside by fly tippers and people leaving their litter where they've camped. Such a shame the minority ruin it for the majority, and well as for the wealthy....They do as they please and look after their own, just how they deny us good folk of the right to roam in our beautiful woodlands is sickening.
Lovely to hear about you and your dog wild camping, yes with that quad a 5x5 is no issue at all👍🏻
Thank you very much for watching and your kind words
Have a super weekend Frank, happy wild camping 🌳🌳👍🏻😊🐶🌳🌳

I don't get out camping as much as I would like, because of various things, but at least I still get to walk in my local woods which I love every day, I will put some posts from there soon as it's all I can do at present, I'm just trying to save for an sd card, but being as broke as I am it's taking a while, so thank you for helping me get out vicariously through your great posts Mike, thank you.

That is a really dandy set-up. On your advice, I chose to make my first DD Tarp purchase a 3.5 x 3.5. I'm very happy with it. After watching your videos, and a few others, I've discovered I can sort of ad lib my set-ups, depending on the surrounding trees, brush etc. and the weather. I can easily bring both sides all the way to the ground in the event of a blow, or only one side, with the other tied up at various angles with leads to various bushes or trees or to a trekking pole. And the 3.5 x 3.5 is long enough that I can move the outer-most tent stakes in one loop and provide a partial enclosure, while still leaving my DD Frontline XL fully enclosed and with room to move around my hammock with only minimal stoop. Anyway, I would recommend the 3.5 x 3.5 to others.
I'm not sure that was clear at all. lol It's easier to show than describe, isn't it?
Anyway, this Chrysalis set-up, especially with the use of the flexible branch to bring out the sides, is a further improvement on all my messing about. I like it very much. Thank you for sharing.
BTW it looks like we bought the same adjustable orange 'tree huggers'. I like them. They give me a lot of flexibility about how far apart my trees are. More options for hanging spots.
Well, thanks very much for another terrific video. Always a pleasure, my friend
Best wishes from the Oregon Coast

Hi, ah my friend youve got the perfect size tarp👍🏻my next tarp that i purchase shall be a 3.5x3.5 your reasons for getting one are spot on. My main reason for getting one that size is that it enables me to have an 'A'frame style set up over my hammock and have just enough coverage. The 3x3 isnt quite enough coverage in 'A' frame set up over my hammock, that's why you see so many people end up doing the diamond config with their 3x3 purely because it just wont give that little extra cover from rainfall.
I see thats cool that you also have the same tree straps as me, they are so well made and the materials should last a life time. I always make sure i inspect mine a week or so before im due out wild camping, makes for good practise and peace of mind lol. Another thing i do with my straps is i always put mine on the radiators at home, even if they've had no rain i always make sure there's no damp in them before i pack them away👍🏻Im sure you do much the same...
Thank you so much for watching, and btw i love your set up ideas and improvements now you have a 3.5x3.5
Always lovely to hear from you

Hi Mark, its huge! Yes you certainly could have a good ol dance in there lol...
Yeah i think some people should think about when to eat when doing an overnighter rather than the over focus of what to eat, as it makes all the difference to our nights sleep. Such a basic thing seems to get overlooked. You're on the money my friend when you say eat well and sleep well. Its fine to have a later evening meal than we would at home. I thank the landlord and most of all i thank mother nature by leaving no trace, as i know you sir do the same.

Such a relaxing 44 min Mike, great to see you out and about, as I must do soon, and what a fantastic set up you had all snug and your tree shelf such innovation. There is something enjoyable about being pitched where not wanted and breaking camp at dawn. Its quite an old idea and the version i use is from Paul Bisseker bushcraft, excuse the spelling😲 if its incorrect. Yeah i mention him in my vid. The only thing ive done different to Paul is that once the table is tied to the tree i put a piece of live wood (around 2") in the paracord and twist it so it really cranks up the tightning of the table top to the tree...

Just watched this one for first time. Interesting vlog Mike thanks. Like the tarp setup looks very workable. Natures sounds are so musical and mystical in the quiet surrounds of the bush... loved the woodpecker sounds ... reminds me of the old cartoons. Have you ever approached the landowners for permission to camp and explained what it is you do... being educational and all?? . We get requests here and many will allow a few on their properties but most ban shooting as so many prime animals roaming about. People such as yourself I'm sure w oukd be welcome in most places here. We are used to camping under the stars with mustering camps. Keep these vlogs coming as it gives me pleadant watching in quieter times. Bushyboy Oz.

      Hi Ewen,
Thank you, a very spacious set up for hammock wild camping👍🏻
Hey I know what you're referring to with the woodpecker sounds 'woody wood pecker!' Used to love watching those cartoons as a child👍🏻😀👍🏻
No Ewen because in all honesty most of the places I wild camp I don't know who owns the land. There are a couple of locations where the farm house is situated close to the woods but I'm not one to go knocking on doors. But in saying that if I was ever on the way into the woods and I knew for sure it was the landowner that was walking through or quad biking, then sure yes I'd ask if it was ok and be respectful. See the woodlands over here can have many people walking through and everyone is trespassing in theory other than the owner. There's many small woods here where its all fenced off and signs warning of prosecution and keep out, and these woods have no housing where the owner lives...He or she could live miles away.
I just dont like how our woodlands are all bought up by the wealthy and fenced off, its places like this that we all should be able to enjoy and of course treat with respect, a terrible thing to deny people of basic human rights to roam ...This is how I personally feel about it anyway👍🏻
Hey I'd love to come over there my friend, sounds amazing.

Hi Mike, I just used 15mm brass heavy duty snaps spaced at 300mm and left a gap of 600mm from the ridge down to let the hammock suspension through. If you take the tarp all the way to the ground (like on your video) the shelter throws the wind well. At first I used Velcro but that made the edge of the tarp very stiff so I replaced it with snaps. They work well and are a damned sight quicker and easier to fit. ATB@@BlackCountryWoodsman

Love that set up Mike, I always like to look out and see what's going on though, but for cr@p weather that's ideal. That chilli looked ok didn't it? I've had the tinned stag chilli before and That was ok, I love that pepper rice, I just add it to my chilli or bung a teaspoon of water in it and heat it up in my pot as that's all it needs. Amazing sunset mate... great location you have there. Does the lantern actually warm the air up around you a bit Mike? Totally brilliant overnighter Mike, enjoyed our live FB chat whilst watching this vid... Lee

Hi Lee, thanks mate yeah i like to see 360° if i can when camping but its not always ideal due to terrian, and changeable weather conditions. That day the forcast for later on was snow and light winds so i made a shelter to deal with the info i had.
Yeah mate i could have done what you said with the rice and have done so before, im sure i have that on vid. The idea was to do three things with minimal fuss and as quickly as possible as i was starving lol. My rice chilli and coffee were all ready (piping hot) at the same time with one meths stove.
The candle lantern shall warm a smallish tent, say the Dutch army tent by a couple of degrees but a 4x4 tarp is way to roomy for a small candle to up the temperature mate.

Throw that one into polite conversation next time you hear anyone talking about us being an overcrowded island.

I agree and also much of the woodland in the UK is large monocultures of single species which are not ecologically rich as they do not support as broad a range of wildlife as mixed woodland.

Roughly a third of Holland's land use is committed to producing milk for the globe a lowest price. Ecological waist land.

Hi Mike, I don’t think I’ve seen a tarp setup quite like that before. Was it something you made up yourself? It certainly did the job mate, very cosy 👍 can I ask, would you consider going knocking on the landowners door and ask permission to camp or is he not the happy type.

      Hi mate👋🏻😊🌳🌳🌳
Thank you, it's not of my making my friend....Ive seen it done without the pullouts on the sides, and ive seen it done with the pullouts tied off to trees before. Why use trees and have paracord restricting your movement around the shelter when you can do it with a small branch of holly, or some flexable green wood. Ive seen people use aluminium arched tent poles to do it but never fully what ive done on this vid. Im not claiming anything as there may well be someone or a vid out there that shows it. In all fairness everythings been done before and all we really seem to do is slight variations on older ideas👍🏻 One thing i do claim is calling it the 'Chrysalis configuration' heheh...
No my friend im not that sort person to go knocking on his door to ask permision, even though it is well mannered and polite to do so...
My camping is about getting into woodlands that have been purposely closed off to the public purely to deny us of our freedom to roam. Obviously fly tippers and all manner of scum dont help when they litter these woodlands and it effects us good people who respect the land. Im not interested in doing permissioned woodland camping as to me personally it totally takes away the whole reason i wild camp. I may as well set up in my back garden and have a fire as do a permission. But this is my personal opinion and that doesnt mean im right and those that permission camp are wrong and vise versa...Its just purely my preference. Im no fan of the rich buying the land and fencing it off to the general public, i feel very strongly against everything being taken away by the wealthy- taken away and denied from common man.
Hope that answers your questions mate..

Black Country Woodsman I’m of the same thinking Mike I don’t agree when they purchase land and cordon it off to suit them. I was just talking about this in a closed Facebook wild camping forum. I would camp anywhere if I found the right spot but I would abide if the owner found me and request I move on as you have said you would do. Hi Andy, cheers mate i appreciate your kind words👍🏼😊👍🏼
Well it all depends on how i was approached in all fairness, i am ready for the worst scenario but im quite sure that things would never get to that point. Id say what i was doing and tell him i respect the land and that he wont even know I'd been there. I'd also show him some footage to show im respectful of nature. Maybe I'd offer him some money to stay the night, its all very hard to say until you're actually face to face and how the land owner reacts. If he asked me to go then of course I'd pack away and move on.

Thanks for sharing that video Mike, very relaxing. Love the set up! I'm taking my son to scotland again in may and will deffo nick your build...looks so toasty and draft free. One question, do you put an inflatable pad or foam roll mat under your hammock, or is the underblanket enough? I only ask as I'm in the process of swapping out all of my kit to warmer stuff as I'm a cold sleeper. I've just got the new(ish) british army modular sleep system and can honestly say it's awsome! Bit bulky, but warmest I've ever slept and roomy enough for a chunky 6 footer to be comfortable!!
Keep the vids coming pal, they feed my need when i can't get out as much as i should.

      @BlackCountryWoodsman  5 років тому +1

Hi Andy, thank you my friend im glad you like the set up...Very cosy indeed!👍🏻Well Andy im a very hot sleeper and i normally just use a underblanket and always carry a closed cell foam mat if it gets a little nippy. That particular night i did end up putting the foam in also, i did this around 3am lol. I wasnt cold, i could just feel a cool patch within my hammock so i decided on putting the mat inside. Those mats are great aren't they, they weigh nothing really so always good practise to have one to hand. So yes I'd definitely take a foam mat including an underblanket, i never take an inflatable pad as they just dont stay in one place inside a hammock. But there is hope if you have an air pad that has its slotting going vertical down the pad rather than horizontally. A vertically slotted (hope u know what i mean) air pad wraps round you in a hammock where as a horizontally slotted one seems to want to resist being under you and staying in one place.
Ah youve got the new British army modular sleep system, very nice and such fantastic kit👍🏻
Thank you very much for watching and your kind words
All the very best to you and your son.

@@BlackCountryWoodsman Thanks for that advice Mike. I currently use an (very) old back packing air bed from my motorcycling days. It indeed has the air tubes which run full length, but inside my TW hammock it refuses to stay put, usually ending up 'spooning' me in the middle of the night when i wake up freezing!! Being made of a heavy nylon type fabric doesn't help matters either. I've even tried using the anti slip matting that you get from halfords or similar to keep it in place, but again it pop's up like a football in a swimming pool!!
I've just got hold of a new NATO issue foam mat which i will try in the 'pocket' under the sleep section of the hammock. If it stays i place in conjunction with and underquilt, i should be toasty.....all i need now is a 120 litre burgen to carry it all in and muscles like popeye! lol
Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.

I always pick up my dogs poop, like everything else in the woods, there are responsible people and ones who don't care so much about other people's enjoyment, I think if more people came to the woods, which I am sure will be happening now because of youtube Maybe more people, dog owners or not would learn to respect nature more, hopefully.

      Hi, 👋🏻😊🌳🌳🌳
I agree with you my friend, its always the minority that ruins it for the majority...The craze that plagues many a woodland is people picking up the dog poop and bagging it then just hanging it on trees! They go to the extent of bagging it, but just cant be bothered to take it away...Just plain lazy and disrespectful
