I agree with your philosophy of restoration. I have been a bicycle rider and mechanic for over 50 years. I love the feeling of knowing that there are few bikes that really belong in the trash. Even if you don't want it, there is someone who will be able to use it and be very happy. Today, too many people buy a bike brand new, and in 2 years, because the shifting or the braking is a bit off, they feel they need a brand new bike. This was a nice, conservative restoration, which did not use too many new parts. thank you!
The spirit of cycling for me is adventure and freedom. The feeling you had when biking as a child has never left me even after 25 years! It’s still just as fun and brings me so much joy.

100% True! Time just stops when I'm in my bike workshop, tweaking, repairing, upgrading components -- learning how to adjust a new part, a brake caliper or figuring out a solution to a problem that most of these "fancy" bike shops would either decline to help with, or just suggest buying a 'modern' bike instead. I just completely overhauled a Gary Fisher from the 90's... piece by piece, I had to learn how to adjust, retrofit and tweak every part. Your comments at 13" were spot on - it makes the bike uniquely YOURS. You have spent time and effort to perfect the bike, give it new life, and it may not have the latest geometry or fancy parts, but its unique and special. I love the time you take to clean the bikes you work on - that's also a lost art... Thanks and keep on posting these.

I had never previously considered carrying the biking season on into winter, but with closures and mandates this year I was worried what having no physical outlet in the winter time would do for mental health. However 2 of my local riding buddies had fat bikes and suggested I look into one.
I managed to get lucky and find a fatbike in my frame size, which is usually impossible, and I never looked back!
It might just be one of my favourite seasons to ride in.
Even some of the local trails, which are normally nothing too exciting, became loads of fun! Simply getting geared up for the cold and getting out for a cruise in the fresh powder became an adventure that I'm always excited for. Everything is so scenic and peaceful, and when you want to get a lil rowdy you can do that too haha.
It was nice to watch the restore as always. And good to see more people braving the cold. In the future I would recommend a dropper post, because being able to drop your seat and centre of gravity over the rear wheel can sometimes be enough to give you the traction you might be lacking. And if there was ever a season to be closely monitoring and adjusting tire pressures, winter would be the one. I've gone as low as 4.5 psi, with tubes and had no issues. As high as 10-12 psi when I'm on flat publicly maintained trails.

Love your restorations. Here in Donegal on the NW Coast of Ireland I do bike builds,wheel building,bike fits and look after many folks steeds. Recently built up an old 1990 Cannondale Beast of the East with mostly retro bits bought on eBay. Spirit of cycling ..constantly changing ebb and flow. Find perfection very occasionally riding my road bike,mountain bike or gravel bike,then long periods of not feeling it..bit like life in general. However the journey continues. Rode first road race in 1970’s.. Early MTB ‘pioneer?’ from 1980 and still riding and working on bikes today. So something has me well and truly hooked.
I just picked up an old Mongoose Malus fat bike and changed everything on it, made it mine, new hubs and a Advent group set, new botton bracket. It rides great and is very fun to ride. Just following your advice "give those old bikes a new life".
My spirit of cycling: Feeling the wind around my nose when pushing the pedals like in childhood days. As a bike mechanic maintaining and repairing other peoples bikes and give them the same love as i would give to my bikes. Thats what it is about for me!

After studding the tires on our fat bikes this winter, it's been the best upgrade for those hard packed / icy days! We love getting out in the fresh snow! The colder the better!

@@oldshovel I just received a pair of Vee Avalanche snow fat tires, which also have the stud holes pre made. I will soon be putting on a packfull of studs on the tires for hard, frozen riding!
Congratulations on a really nice build. I love that you have done it on such a tight budget. I am jealous of the trails you get to ride both in the summer and winter. A single speed fat bike in the snow on those hills is just asking for your knees to be popped. I am really pleased that even with your sponsors you have not just thrown a whole load of new parts on it. Charge Spoon saddles have to be one of the most comfortable saddles ever made, I must have had in excess of 20 of them. I have one on my road bike that must have in excess of 15 000km on it and it is still going strong.
Interesting, I was thinking just that as I rode it yesterday, the saddle was surprisingly comfortable.
Great Looking Build! The Spirit of Cycling for me is having my son and grandsons get into mountain biking! Love riding with them at 63!
Before moving to GA, I owned a Framed Wolftrax Fat Bike. I loved that bike. Basically upgraded everything except the wheels. I put a rockshox bluto fork on it. A micro shift drivetrain. PNW Dropper. Shimano Hydraulic brakes (it came with mechanical breaks). RaceFace bar and stem. ODI grips. RaceFace Chester pedals. Maxxis tires. It was bitter sweet selling it. The guy who bought it got a heck of a deal!
They sure are awesome fun.
This a worthwhile project for sure. Simply bc rigid fatbikes have not changed much. I have had the same one for about 10 years. I ride it about 2 months per year. Well done. I run mechanical breaks though. I never get going that fast in snow on my trails in Ohio. Short ups and downs.

I ride my fat bike all year round and love it, covered over 13,000 miles on it so far. Just wish we had more snow here!
Totally agree with the mention that shop time is at least as important as riding the bike. Only then does it feel like my own bike and it's just as I want it.
spirit of cycling is for me is the feeling of - upon premise of certain training - beeing free to go wherever I want.... keeps me pedaling every day (on my commute trip) and driving 10km instead of 2.5km being shortest distance...

I am also repairing a junk bike now. It's fun to get your bike clean. I recommend to put grease in center hub of wheels next maintenance.
I think you are off to a good start in finding the spirit of cycling witha fat bike. Bought my first one in '19, and it quickly replaced my other bikes for my go to year round bike. Yes, it was a poor choice for double black trails, but it could hang on black trails and it make greens and blues super fun. Thats the key right, are you have fun? Like the kind of fun that doesn't involve worry about your carbon frame or if you are gonna scratch the stanchion of your full squish... thats where I found the joy in cycling again. I don;t know much about the Cooker, but being outside and having fun is what its all about, hopefully this bike helps you get that feeling this winter. Cheers!
Love fat bikes. We don't get much snow here but I ride mine all year.
I went on a ride on my fat bike just today! It's a Trek Farley 5, but modded with a RockShox Bluto fork and a dropper post, so basically a Farley 7. Awesome bike in the snow!
I do more swearing at my bike when working on it in my bike cave. But getting out on the trails always is great stress relief.

I bought a Salsa Mukluk when fat tires first came out. They may be niche but what a great ride for snow and sand. The momentum those tires pack are amazing if you haven't try a speed run do it and let it coast you'll coast so much further than a skinny tire bike. Enjoy!
I really fancy a fat bike project after I've completed the other bikes that are waiting for some love. And I totally agree that getting a bike ready to ride is part of the same process - relationship, even - as riding it.

Just a little tip I noticed: once you've seated the cassette end cap, you can use the hub freewheel as a ratchet.
I have an old Merida Matts that I used when I was stationed in Korea way back when. I got sent to northern Japan and now live here. Haven't found many trails to use it on so I mostly use my touring bike spring, summer and fall. I finally got some Schwalbe studded tires, replaced the hydros with cable brakes, turned it into a 1x with rear and front pannier racks. Probably the best repurposing of a bike that I've done. The challenges of snow and ice riding is great. The unknowns that lay under the snow keeps you on your toes and the workout you get is fantastic. I even carry a fire starting kit and a canteen cup just in case my adventurism gets me in a bind hahaha. So far I haven't had any issues going to and from work, but I've curious about getting a fat bike and making that my winter bike. I appreciate your demonstration. Might be something to invest in and trick out for the cold and snow.
Used to fatbike in the winter but then wanted a little more speed and switched to riding a plus size eMTB 👍🏻

Well said about making the bike yours. Did almost the same thing with my new fatbike from 2018 - cleaned it, optimised cable housing, changed the brakes and set up tubeless.

FINALLY FATTIES GETN SOME LOVE ON HERE! Awesome build! From an old fatbiker though, your going to end up swapping those avids out. Older hydrolics especially, but hydrolics in general tend to get gummed up if your riding in colder conditions. Had several friends experience it. I just went with really good cable discs on mine. Also, snow is really bumpy especially if you are just riding foot traffic packed trails vs groomed. Some FBers wouldn't say this but I highly highly recommend shocks. I have Wrens on mine and they are amazing! And a drop post is an absolute must! When you slipping in a slick patch is essential to lower your center of gravity.
A dropper is on the short list. As to brakes I debated these vs some avid bb7’s I also have. My other fat bike has bb7 and I find them stiff and slow. Ultimately I opted to try out the Elixirs to see how thy perform. Ultimately I would love some Paul Klampers on it but thy would cost 2x what I paid for the bike.
Hey Jansen, I am going to start riding in northern Canada this week and it's often -30degsC. You think that the hydraulics will be a little less responsive eh?
@@gigglesaregood I absolutely believe it would. I wouldn't even try it. You are definitely going to need cables.
@@gigglesaregood I've been riding in temps as low as -20 so far, and no issues with Hydraulics. I'm normally not a fan of brakes using Dot fluid, but from what I've read mineral oil braking systems could be the problem with sluggish brakes. I'm on a set of basic 2 piston Srams, with plenty of response and braking power.
I highly recommend BB7s. You just need the right levers, metal pads, and compressionless brake housing. Dialed in, and with big rotors, they are as powerful, if not more powerful, than most hydros. And way more reliable and consistent.
I am so happy to hear someone else agree that tinkering is more fun than riding. Lovely restoration on this - I love the Charge steel frames! I've had two, and wish I hadn't sold them.

I have a fat beach cruiser. Fun to putter around the neighborhood with.
One reason I love fat biking so much is because it gives me a sense of adventure without having to go to a remote area. A trail that would be crowded in the summer has fewer people and feels more "out there" in the winter.
By the way, single speed fat biking is actually kind of fun, but you have to have the right gearing (28x21 works pretty well) and snow conditions or else you're walking haha.
Been cycling all my life: BMXs to Racer (road bike) to MTB to Gravel, and in recent times refound the magic riding an eBike.

Great video. I picked up the exact same model of bike the end of last year. Added some studded tires and i work great for me.
Even that I don't like fat bikes at all for several reasons , the love and attention to any detail you do to every build is amazing mate ! So this still get's a thumbs up for all the efford !

Another very nicely done build, just some simple upgrades to a bike to make it clean, and most importantly useable again. Honestly, I've just started searching for a Fatbike to add to my collection. But I think it's just the wrong time of year. I think I'll have better luck in the spring, especially here in the northeast where it's also a pretty popular activity right now.

I did the exact same thing with an older KHS 1000, but I gave it a paint job as well. If you want extra traction, something I highly suggest is replacing those veerubber tires(I had them on my bike as well), and switching them with some maxxis minions. It will totally change your grip in the snow!
I have owned a Trek Farley 6 since 2015 and in winter I can't imagine any other bike. It is also the most comfortable for year round bikepacking.

I was out on my local trails yesterday because the conditions were amazing! The fat bikes were out, as well as the groomers. My bike has 29x2.8" tires and were perfect.

A friend of mine has got a Trek Tarley I haven't I wouldn't mind one tho. We don't get snow where I live Liverpool UK just rain I'd love to ride somewhere like this on a fat bike it would be brilliant and up in the mountains to. Superb build well done.
I can relate to your feelings on wrenching in the shop! I love it too. However getting out and riding the bike after a job well done, is also sweet. A bike doesn't feel like mine until I have worked it over. My next project will likely be a rebuild/respec of an old 1999 Jamis Dakar for one of my kids. Hopefully this will get them deeper into the love of riding.

Love it, just love it. The Charge Cooker is basically a Surly Pugsley v1. My pugs is my daily commuter, I have a couple sets of wheels and bunch of tires. Origin8 slicks for commuting and a variety of knobbies for trail. So much fun! For icy conditions you could try a soft knobby like a 120tpi Surly Nate or 45nrth wrath lord if you don’t want to go studded. I only run that in front when it snows here in central NC(rarely).

great refurbishment on a not-that-worn-out bike. I wish you showed the bleed procedure thought. all the more if these levers are avid as it's tricky to get it right with them in comparison to shimano levers.
takes crank out, doesnt remove and regrease bottom bracket, you know the bit that actually has the bearing.
spins crank to tighten, sounds dry as a desert.
Have a Cogburn FatBike, there is no snow in Puerto Rico, but lots of coast. Ride my Fattie in the beach, an awesome workout. Wanted to ride along the beach, with a regular bike is almost impossible. Although my Fattie has 4" wheels is excellent to ride on loose sand using 6 psi or less tire pressure. Due after ride cleaning (have to virtually dissasemble the bike) Do not use my Fattie as much as my other bikes. But when I use it, is always an exilerating ride......

nice bike. I habe a framed wolftrax 2.0 alloy bike that i have currently stripped down and about to build back with slx brakes shimano m5100 1x11 11 to 51 , have already swapped the flat bars for some 25R 180mm pnw bars and stem ,also changing out the neco bb and truative 2x for a race face crank set and 32 tooth chainring and an fsa bb...really would like to get the manitou 120mm fork but might have to wait a bit...love my fat bike
I took my trail bike out on the snow. It did fine on the compacted snow (maybe because I had brand new, very sharp tires) although it definitely struggled when things got soft or steep. Somehow, the loss of control on descends makes it funnner

Cool machine, I live in southern Sweden and occasionally we have snow here, I ride a 26 inch GT with 57mm tyres. When the trails get icey I use tyres with spikes, though I don't have a fat bike, I have seen the tyres on sale with spikes. Sportive greetings!

This was my very first fat bike...I found that it had what felt like a self steering issue. If you were aware of it, it didn't seem to be much of a problem. I didn't have it long enough to figure out whether it was the tires or perhaps something in the geometry of the frame. But, lots of fun for sure.

You thought those old brakes were wonky? You’ll be replacing those Elixir brakes soon. Major master cylinder design flaw and SRAM knows it. Even $35 Shimano 200 Alivio brakes are miles ahead. We probably replace 5-7 of these a month at my shop. Great Video.

oh man not even gonna paint. just clean and wax. I love your paint jobs but I get it. Sometimes no paint needed. Just preserve what's there because that bike has seen some miles, but looked well loved.

@@oldshovel Well sometimes it's better to just preserve the thing's history. Like some of the old resto mods you've done. Sure getting the fork to match looked like hell, but man that bike looked great.

Very cool bike, and it's nice to use the parts you have on hand to get one going. I've never ridden a fattie, but I have a question. Is the tread pattern on that rear tire aggressive enough?
As far as the spirit goes, I really miss riding in winter. You have to have the right gear and clothing, but it pays off. No bugs, leaves etc, and the trails are usually pretty quiet. I really miss it. 😢
The rear tire was one I was unsure about also but figured I’d try it out before I swapped and it is not great for the hills I have. It kept slipping out when I felt it shouldn’t.
I've always wanted to give fat bikes a try.. but here in Australia they're understandably a bit rare.. but regardless.. I reckon they'd be a blast

That is awesome! I wish that we had need for fat bikes down here in the Deep South, but we hardly ever get snow and if we do, most of the time it is gone in a few hours. There are a couple of UA-cam guys that ride fat bikes over in SC, for bikepacking, but it is because of the sand. I just haven't gotten to the point that I can justify the expense of a fat bike for a few hours per year...yet. LOL!

@@oldshovel BUT...i. understand that they work really well in the sand. We do have some sand down here, especially along the coast. I have been working on a video series on my channel about a hiking trip to Cumberland Island National Seashore where we hiked 14 miles through the shifting sand. That just might be a good excuse for a budget build...There were people bikepacking when we were there, but they were just on regular bikes and complained about the loose sand. I bet that a fat bike would be sweet on that island. And as a bonus, a fellow would have to completely take that bike apart, down to the bare frame, to get all of the sand out to prevent rust, once he got home. Okay... gotta start browsing Marketplace now. My wife may kill me. LOL!
The next time I get a wide range cassette and derailleur to work like you do will be my first and only time. I wish there was a youtube tutorial on how to do this... what about it oldshovel?
Such a sick restoration! I've been dying to find a cheap used fattie that I can restore. We have a lot of snow here in New England and I see my friends out shredding with their fat bikes and I want to do the same! I work at a bike shop now and I have access to a bench 24/7 so I'm chomping at the bit lol.
