I’m gonna say it. Bike owners in the Salt Lake City area are either incredibly generous with their old bike donations or they don’t have a clue what they’re giving up. Either way all of us viewers are scratching our heads about these crazy good finds.

Indeed, what a find! Looking at the general condition of the bike, you can tell this bike was barely ridden. Looking at the drivetrain, I doubt it made a 1.000 miles. I wouldn't be surprised if the brakepads were still originals...

Brooks saddles and tape are terrible products and exist as a marketing ploy to exploit a brand identity. But they probably also sponsor the channel. For the rest of us, Selle Royal makes a far better touring saddle at a fraction of the price and just about anything is better than the awful Brooks tape.

Gosh, I love those old Cannondales. Those welds are just beautiful. I have already done two builds of vintage Pennsylvania-built Cannondales. In fact, my 1993 H400, which is now a 1x10 flat bar gravel bike, goes out in a couple of hours once it warms up.
$35? Geez. You understand that my constant build projects are YOUR FAULT, right? I learned a lot of this by watching you.

Nowadays aluminium bikes have so exposed welds almost as if it was meant to remind that you could not afford carbon.
Cannondales no longer care about welds, but at least Rose still does.

It is worth re-packing the hub grease while doing this level of cleanup on a bike that has likely 20+ years old. The '99 Cannondale tandem I recently bought and rebuilt spun smoothly but was totally dry in the rear, and the grease in the front we well past its prime. It was worth the time to pop out the axles to clean and re-grease. I didn't have any free-hub oil, but now that I do I intend on cleaning and re-greasing the freehub before the summer riding season with my son. I also like to put a drop each of wet lube on the pivots of the derailleur and wipe off the excess after excercising them (easiest while already removed for cleaning).

I had a very similar bike - a t700 in a beautiful forest green. It also now has a copper-riveted brooks saddle, matching tape, a new cockpit with a quill adapter... Really similar! I took the old bar-end shifters and mounted them to the downtube because I hate bar-end shifters, i'm always hitting them with my knees. It was my grandpa's bike, too small for me but my old man rides it now. Such good looking and versatile bikes!

To give it further improvements I'd suggest to get rid of those cantilever brakes and add some Shimano direct mount race brakes.
I just bought a really, really old German 'Staiger Trento' steel frame sports bike (bulit late 1960 to early 70th), which was advertised for 130 €. During my inspection I negotiated the price down to €80. It really needs a complete restauration, new paintwork and lots of new parts...

I always loved Cannondale's "Classic" Paint and finish second only to Klein's. And I think if you ride them as intended they not bad bikes, I personally rode a modernised ST500 for years (and it still get daily use from my ex).

Cool video and I love the color ! They used Imron paint.
I obtained a H300 model in black a couple years ago that was in worse shape. It was sitting in a pile in the back room of a lbs. $30 took it home. With new tubes tires and chain I ride it but SRAM derailleur skips and shifts hard with well worn grip shift to boot .
Got to switch to Shimano. Also the aluminum frame is a hard ride on my old bod and thinking a suspension fork might help.

Bike got what it deserved. Nice parts upgrade and an Oldshovel treatment 😊
This thing should well be worth more than triple is previous value now.

I have a 95 F600, which had a similar parts spec, Acera X hubs, Alivio brakes, that CODA crankset. I ended up having to rebuild the hubs after not a lot of miles because the cones got pitted, and eventually I built a new set of wheels for it.

(2023)The Cannondale I'm updating- to a modern rideable standard- is SO old, it has the train station logo ('88). It was the first bike ever to have a super thick down-tube, which became standard proportion for frame geometry. I'm lucky and proud to still have it, and to acknowledge its provenance and heritage. Called a "mountain" bike, but was equipped with no where near enough gears for mountain biking. Forgiven, considering its age, the very inception of MTB, albeit in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, no where near real mountains. Again, I'm so glad I never sold it.

Gorgeous. You did exactly what I would have done. Love the bar choice with the tape and saddle. I might have added new treads, 700x32 gumwall gravelkings would be nice.

Gravelkings because everyone is using Gravelkings? Nah, Schwalbe Marathon 420. Half the price, 4x the mileage, no flats, and about the same rolling resistance.

    • @gregstrabala8607
      @gregstrabala8607 2 роки тому

@@maxotterland I have gravel kings and really like them but I also have Schwalbe Billy bonkers on my klunker and I like those too, so I hear ya. I use what I like regardless of who’s doing it. Point I was trying to make was larger and a bit more aggressive treads might be nice.

Love those older Cannondales ! I have a purple M900, rides great ! Love the color and Brooks saddle and tape. Not crazy about the bars though. I would have reused the Coda drops. Love the stem. Threadless is more practical and better looking. New tires might also be nice. Awesome, as always ! 👍
