Most of the expats living in Medellin live in the two most expensive parts of the city. This is the two most expensive parts of town. You can find nice places to live minutes outside the city for $400 a month. Much safer and a better quality of life. That won't happen because instead of learning Spanish a good amount of you are chasing the wrong women. Going out for the Poblado lifestyle is like thinking Beverly Hills is a good representation of the US. The short story is you can live a very good life here for $1500 easy if you know how to make it work. Going on year 12 and having the time of my life.

I think folks have an illusion of being a star once they land because of the 4X exchange rate not knowing that also makes you spend more thinking you are richer than you really are. I agree with you, if you go for the wrong reasons, you will never be happy simply because your money multiplies or access to things that may not necessarily be good for your soul. I doubt sleeping with different women regularly or drinking daily makes anyone really content. Just another illusion.

I’ve lived in Medellin for over 7 years and my rent is about $600 usd now with the annual increases. The key to Medellin is liking the culture and the people. If you don’t have real friends there and stuff to keep you motivated, you will get bored. The women are beautiful but also can come with baggage and there are often trust issues on different levels. IMO, you are always seen as a gringo or outsider with money. Even if your Spanish is on point, people will know you are different by how you carry yourself and the quality of your clothes and so on. I still enjoy Colombia but I appreciate it more when I’m only there for a month at a time tops. Outside of seeing beautiful women, it can become mundane.

Bro, what are you talking about? For real. My girl and I live on $1500 a month in a high-rise, furnished apartment in Ciudad del Río, and that covers everything for the entire month. We’re living well, not like poor people. We eat out and go out 10 to 15 times a month, with meals for both of us averaging $13. And we’re not talking basic places; we go to pretty nice spots. We’re not big drinkers, but we do have a few cocktails when we go out.
That $1500 also covers food at home (2 to 3 meals a day), ALL our utilities, high-speed internet, data plans for our phones, gas for the car (we had car problems twice in the last 12 months, which cost $250 to fix-our car is paid off), Netflix, Spotify, Amazon Prime, and health care. We travel to the mountains or other cities once or even twice a month and to other countries in South America once a year. We have the latest gadgets like the iPhone 15 and MacBook Pro M3. Dji pocket 3 My visa expenses are covered too. Her girls stuff also.
If we don’t take a trip or go out, we save money, but we don’t even try to save-it’s just a natural result of our lifestyle and we anit nickel n diming shit.
All this averages out to $1500 a month. Going on 11 years in Medellin.

Philly is usually 30s in the winter 90 in the summer and seasonal depression hits hard there. Also in the US you have to have a car for a lot of cities and medellin is an easy city to do without one.

He's right about vendors and others taking advantage of you once they figure you're a gringo. It happened with tipping. I enjoyed a meal and service at a restaurant, making the mistake of tipping 15%. The next time I went, the food was still excellent, but the service was lacking. I left 10%, and the server was pissed.

Plus I grew up in a rough area down South and also have military, so my instincts and feeling a not-so-good situation kick in when I sense a potentially dangerous or precarious scenario. I also tell guys just because you grew up in a big city in the states doesn't mean you can go to a place like Medellin, Cali, etc and act like you own the spot. It comes down to your income level back in your country ( US, Canada or Western Europe). Four factors determine your spending while living there. 1/ Do you have a steady income of $50k-100k or beyond? 2/ What is your lifestyle like? 3/ Will you have a partner ( wife or live with a partner or single ), 4/ what will you be doing while living there ( how will you be spending your time?). So you factor in all of those variables and you will have your actual spending per month/year. Whether it’s $1500 a month or $2500 or beyond Medellin or any other major city in Colombia is a great value for your money. Quality of life, services and time spent will be worth every penny you spent.

After reading all the comments, I would say investing in real estate in Medellin and the surrounding area would be a smart move. My wife and I were just talked into buying a condo in Sabaneta. Our friends in FL purchased two units. It's new construction and our condo won't be ready until 2026. I hope we didn't make a mistake!

What’s up Kari! I found your channel recently. I’m here now and this is my 4th time in Medellin this year.
I usually stay in poblado for about 20 days or so. I pay around $1200-1500 for an air Bnb.
I found Medellin early 2024, keep in mind I am chef on cruise ship so I am seasoned traveler.
I have throughly enjoyed the P4P seen. It works for my lifestyle but the honeymoon stage has finally started to wear off.
I sometimes wonder how it would be to seriously date, but with all the risk and the type of girls I like, I’m most likely doing the smart thing keeping things at arms distance.

Like he said, foreigners are ATMs. As for prices on rent, I live in Manhattan NY. $4600 per month for a 620 square ft one bedroom. I say that to say Medellin is cheap. Even a $4k apartment in Medellin would be a mansion rather than a box. My question is the women! My friend who lives there hooked me up with this chick. She didn’t ask for money and hasn’t asked since I’ve returned to NYC. What are the warning signs? Asking for money can’t be a warning sign because American women demand 6 figures, Birkin bags, trips and more*

I have a solution to the crime/dishonesty/taking advantage of tourists problem in Colombia. Actually, my wife, who was born and raised in Colombia, came up with and advocates for this solution. Stop going there. Period. Instead, go to a place like El Salvador, which has amazing beaches, or even Guatemala, which although more dangerous than El Salvador, is safer than Colombia. Or, even the usual places like Costa Rica and Panama. But, if you really insist on going to South America, and it's your first time, then consider Uruguay or even Argentina. Bottom line is that there is no such thing as a completely safe place anywhere in the world, so use common sense folks. But Colombia is truly out of control right now, especially with the criminals targeting naive tourists. Final point, both my wife and I have lived in Colombia, that's where we met, but given the current situation, both socially and politically, we have canceled our plans to go during Christmas.

You could say the same kinds of things about many places in the US. "The average cost of living in a suburb of Cleveland is x% lower than the average for the US" etc. The "average cost thing" also disregards all the expenses one has in connection with travelling, dating, going to restaurants, clubbing, replacing electronics and clothes, etc.

That’s what I’m looking for. I already looked at some that are around $850 and up. We need a 3br and 2-3br, so I know it’s going to be at least $1100. I also don’t want my partner to spend too much time commuting to and from work. But…I’m not going over covering all expenses, including dining, and groceries, along with accommodations for a few bucks less than the U.S. Rent I was paying. $750 total, what people keep advertising, yeah right.

Well the people living up the hill is not the norm. Just like Americans living in trailer trash parks is not considered the norm of amercian life same thing. I have seen Americans living in such poverty conditions that I have never seen in Colombia. So there’s that. Stop pretending like there isn’t poverty im the USA and that every gringo has such a high standard way of living when it isn’t true . And if you are saying the people living up the hill is the way Colombians way of life then you know nothing. Like I said Colombians live a good happy life they are not depressed they don’t dress from Walmart they are poor to your American standards 😂 they live a better life than any gringo . Medellin is not the all of Colombia .

Most of these YT cats that post videos about their overseas experiences need to watch this video. Too often you see them slipping in real time, by seeing and hearing how they move. Sheeyit, they'd be food for wolves in the states & globally too. Baller-esque travel videos also put extranjeros on many a criminals' radar. Wake Up.
