As for the reasons, they've all been touched on in the comments except for two.
An 8.5 month rainy season is entirely too much. I went in July which is the lull of the rainy season. Was able to plan things so that the rain didn't ruin my trips. And was successful at it but if that's the lull of rainy season, I'd hate to see what it's like at it's worst.
Second is the nightlife doesn't compare. Several of my favorite clubs on the planet are in Colombia, Panamá's night life was overall so dull

just spent 4 months in Medellin. will be back in about a month for a few more months. I'm Panamanian-American and I spent like 2-3 years of my life there in total. I prefer Medellin for three specific reasons: the weather, the prices, and the people. I love my Panamanian people, but I fear that the new influx of international financial institutions descending into Panama since the transition of power at the Canal has caused for that very cold, arms-length, distant attitude to permeate Panamanian culture. the people aren't completely unfriendly, but they're nothing like Paisas in Medellin. you can't go into an elevator in Medellin without anyone greeting you, and you can't walk out of it without everyone saying goodbye. anyone you say thank you to consistently responds with "con gusto". it's such a nice touch that I feel has been lost in a lot of other places in the world, including in Miami where I live. it's like Latino southern hospitality in a sense. I love Medellin.

Medellin is beautiful, but its reputation is being ruined by the "scopo girls" drugging and robbing foreigners. I prefer Panama, but I am biased as I'm a former Zonian. How much is home insurance in Panama? For example, if I buy a $1 million condo in Punta Pacifica what would the annual insurance be? Since the Pandemic started insurance rates have gone nuts up here in the U.S. A lot of insurance companies leaving many states leaving homeowners stranded.

@@TitB1199 Panama is much safer than Colombia. I think it comes down to the fact that Panamanians have more opportunity and in general make more money. People are less desperate in Panama City than in most other cities in Colombia, thus people in the city are a lot less likely to try some crazy stuff on you in the center of the city. There’s definitely some tough areas like El Chorrillo, San Miguelito, Santa Marta, Santa Librada, parts of Don Bosco and some of the surrounding area of El Casco Viejo, but for the most part the majority of the city is safe, especially in the Punta Pacifica, Punta Paitilla, San Francisco, Marbella, Parque Lefevre, Hato Pintado, Via Argentina and Brisas Del Golf neighborhoods. San Antonio and Cerro Viento are largely safe suburbs as well.

I've watched many many videos of foreigners in latin america. I feel that you guys coming from rich western countries are always looking for the perfect flawless place. Trust me the way you described Medellin is pretty much the general latin american experience. There is no 'flawless' place, moreso if you look at it from the lens of your own country. All over latin america you will find more or less the same stuff and the same issues. I believe it's more a work of acceptance more than a work of exploring. Accepting stuff as it is, without trying to make if it fit in an ideal model.
I'm not saying don't search, maybe indeed there is a place waiting for you, but I do believe there is way too much expectation.
Anyway my two cents as americans say, good luck.

    • @healthymedia.marketing
      @healthymedia.marketing  Місяць тому +1

Good view on it, instead of hating on the foreigners coming to visit.
In North America, if you have had the chance to visit, things are just very different. The issue for most foreigners is they are looking at it through the lens that you talked about. And expect more. But you can't look at it that way.
Medellin and any other city in Latin America are going to grow and develop as more foreigners come. Yes I hear about Gentrification, but it is happening everywhere. China and richer countries comes to Canada & the US. Canada & the US come to Latin America.
Its people like us that that want to help. By identifying the problems, hopefully we can fix them.
The video was never meant to come down on Medellin, but point out the issues. So hopefully Medellin can grow and develop, yes real estate gets more expensive, taxes go up, but also the government steps up to help with roads, community events etc .

I have lived in both Medellin and Panama and what you say about Medellin is very true. Great place to visit, perfect weather, Poblado is like Beverley Hill CA. But you can't trust anybody. They are there to steal from the gringos. And Colombian immigration is terrible. They are totally inconsistent and discretionary. Panama is a safer place to live. However, I strongly disagree with your comments about Panama banking. These banks are terrible, they got their ass kicked from the Panama Papers and the pendulum has swung too far. These are the worst banks in the world right now. It is difficult to open accounts (even with proper immigration paper) and they have the worst service. Costa Rica Banks are 10X better than Panama.

Thanks for the first part. Everyone has their own opinion. This was mine. Panama has a lot of options of banking and because of the Panama papers things take much longer to open. I do agree with that. But There are a lot of banks in Panama vs. Costa Rica. so there is more options. Some are quicker then others. These results aren't just mine. Business owners have been asking me about the banking in Panama. So I created a video on it. When it comes to buisness banking . Not personal. It's more reliable.

I got through my first "honeymoon" year in Medellín without serious incident (ironically, when I was the least cautious), but I guess as a result I let my guard down and in the three years since have had two home invasion burglaries (while sleeping in bed in my bedroom), a stolen bike when the lock was cut, and an iPhone pick-pocketed on the metro. My personal view regarding safety is it's not a matter of "if" but rather "when" you will become a victim, and I don't do anything here now without first considering the security implications. Much less going out at night for starters, as well as limiting who gets into my apartment. You can make it work here, but you've got to roll with the punches and never forget you can be a likely target.

Medellin is a cool city, but:
Dont be fooled. it's DEF not safe. It's just not. Esp if youre a gringo. You can get mugged in a taxi, by an unsuspecting date, or walk down the street and get your phone snatched.
A lot of people are friendly, but only to get to a state where they can use you. A FEW people are genuine, but the majority aren't
As far as real estate, the people of medellin are VERY anti gentrification/anti gringo esp as far as buying real estate and renting it out, causing the cost of living to be unattainable for the locals. Paisas do not like gringos and hate gringos buying up the nice neighborhoods. They literally had recent protests about it.
It's very dangerous to date there. You can be drugged and kidnapped at the blink of an eye. Even Tinder flashes a warning message when you log on there about how unsafe using the app is in Medellin.
It's a place to go just for fun, but you still have to be very careful while you're there. It's def more fun than Panama, but that's about it.

In Colombia we have "Súper intendencia de industria y comercio" and if they sold you 2 times the tickets like that...one email is all you need for a full refund... And is probable you don't even need to send the email because once you mention that name they will be like: "hey! hold on. Here is you full refund".
Also you mention you like panama Banks over Colombia, but did you know that the best banks of panama are Colombians? 👀 Just saying.

When medellin will be as safe as wealthy suburbs in USA cost of living will go up dramatically. So it's a tradeoff. You can't get it all.

You know, it always baffles me a little bit when american inmigrants talk about latin american countries and they talk about it from the perspective of rich white people. Some of those incidents could've been avoided if you really integrate into the culture. I'm a foreigner too. I'm from Venezuela and I made it a point not to befriend people from Venezuela. I only wanted to befriend Colombian people and learn about the culture. But a lot of american inmigrants don't ever bother to learn the language and they live in this bubble of Poblado or Laureles. And they think they have a compresive grasp of life in the city. It's kind of ironical when you have people in the US saying that if you're going to live there you have to speak american. Of course, the people saying that are not the ones traveling around the world.
So wherever you go, you have to make the effort to integrate by learning the language, befriending people from the culture. Getting out of the touristic zones. I have an american friend who wanted to live in the real Medellin and he went and move from Poblado to Manrique. Kudos to him. LOL.
No place is 100% safe. In the US you have gun violence and school shootings. Getting a tourist visa is VERY hard, let alone a work visa. So it's supposed to be hard for us and easy for you guys?

Comically your comment about wearing shorts reminds me of my Latin spouse always telling me he can spot gringos by their wearing shorts. I say, who cares. Wear what you want. Yes, it is true that in Colombia there is a great problem regarding insecurity, but it has been noted that many foreigners overexpose themselves to very dangerous situations for no reason, without thinking, believing that they are in their countries or in a magical land where no one is going to harm them And that cannot be like that either. Finally, I would like to remind all of you that all these digital nomads have done more damage to the city of Medellín than a benefit, so if you have such a dire opinion of my city I invite you to go to Panama City, like the canal partner did...

A lot of these things are self-inflicted. Just buy a new iPhone. If you just buy a new phone you wouldn't have to deal with the potential of a stolen phone.
Matter a fact buy two phones. You should have a burner phone that you carry with you, especially when you're in crowds so you don't have to get your iPhone stolen in the first place.
Why did this guy have his passport on him at a concert?
This is not Theory to me, this is how I move as I live overseas in Brazil.
The point is this the more planning you put into how you move the safer you'll be and the less hassle you'll have to put up with.
My recommendation is just don't live in Medellin. In other words don't live in a place where the locals don't want you there. Where they think you're gentrifying the area.
I left America because I didn't want to feel like I was living behind enemy lines. That's literally the same thing you're doing in Medellin. I'm not even going to mention druggings.
Also, the temperature is a preference usually of our pailer skinned brethren. 30 and up sounds amazing. I'll leave Brazil when it gets to be in the twenties because it's getting too cold.

    • @healthymedia.marketing
      @healthymedia.marketing  Місяць тому +1

thank you for your valid points, buying new for nomads isn't always the case. They look for deals etc. Buying new in North America, yes. Medellin is a price hike. So I bought used.
Not all locals don't want you there. As the world turns and I mentioned above. Gentrification is happening everywhere, it's not just Colombia. In North America iChina and some of the richer countries have made real estate unattainable. I'm originally from Vancouver, and there are a lot more rules in place.
So because of this North Americans move south. Also because of this, the cities people move to get to be more developed. As taxes go up, and the govenment makes more. Which means better roads, community centers and things to do.
