  • This is how you can power your car subwoofer with a home theatre amplifier. The amplifier I used in the video is a 270W Sony STR-DH130 Stereo Receiver, and the subwoofer is an MTX Audio 5515-44 Dual 4-Ohm 400W sub. Got any questions? Leave it in the comments and I will reply!
    Thanks for watching ;)

    No such thing as underpowering a sub, your subs wattage ratting is just a thermal limit and has in reality nothing to do with output... a great sales pitch is all it is!
    Driving a sub with 1w can not hurt it so long as the signal is not clipping the power rails in the amp... basic stuff
    If you got the HT amp/receiver for free there's no reason to not use it... but for the price of buying one you can buy proper plate amp or a PA amp and a basic active Xover if you main HT amp hasnt got a inbuilt xover.

    If your looking for a lowpass filter for your subwoofers you can use a crossover from old vintage tower speakers fisher tower speakers they are commonly found inside fisher tower speakers

    what a fool! just use pre outs to a active crossover & then into power amp for sub/s.
    BECSUSEthe HEAT he speaks of is inefficency which will burn its components out damaging everything

    A speaker is a speaker. You can power any speaker or car sub with a home receiver. I had my MTX box hooked up to my Kenwood receiver in my bedroom all through high school. The neighbors didn't like it though.

    Running a car subwoofer without a low pass filter sends extremely high frequencies to a car subwoofer which can shorten the life of a car subwoofer because it can heat up the voice coil and damage the car subwoofer I've ran a car subwoofer without a low pass filter before and sent really high frequencies to a car subwoofer before but I only did it for a few seconds and didn't do it for too long because it would have blown the subwoofer that's why I recommend using a low pass filter for car subwoofers because you won't blow your car subwoofers if you use a low pass filter

    This will terribly underpower your car subwoofer. Don't do this unless the wattage on the stereo is very high

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому +2

      +Albert White Its 400W RMS, I was driving it at about 200-250W. Yes its underpowered, but it was definitely loud enough for a large room. A sub won't get damaged from being underpowered, only overpowered :)

    • @jessever3655
      @jessever3655 8 років тому +1

      +Enderman LP pretty sure over powering a subwoofer is almost impossible. under powerig a sub is not good for your sub. look it up. but non the less good stuff.

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому +2

      +jesse ver I think you're a bit confused...Underpowering a speaker = lowering current, this means it plays quieter. If underpowering a speaker was bad for it that means we have to listen to everything at 100% max volume, and this is not true. Overpowering a speaker sends extremely high current into the voice coil, which is what makes the driver blow. You can see plenty of videos of subwoofers getting blown and having their voice coils catching on fire. This is why subwoofers (and all speakers) have a maximum wattage rating. If you exceed this rating by a lot, that is when the voice coil gets destroyed.

    • @jessever3655
      @jessever3655 8 років тому

      +Enderman LP i agree with you. problem is with under powering a sub is that 99% of people turn the gain up all the way and that send clipped signals. over powering is ofcourse possible. but not possible if 200watts above rms is given. to blow a sub takes quite a bit. i should have explained a little better. ;)

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому

      +jesse ver Oh you're talking about clipping, I see, yeah it is bad when a sine wave clips then because the voice coil can get a squared-off wave, which causes the coil to heat up more. I did make sure though that I was sending the subwoofer an unclipped signal at full volume. :)

    I actually tried this with 2 dual dws12 car subwoofers from Walmart and realized that it's nowhere near as powerful as a car amplifier and realized that the subwoofers were severely underpowered by 50 watts rms when I powered them with a vintage realistic sta 785 stereo receiver I cranked it up the volume really high on the receiver and the whole house was shaking but there wasn't a whole lot of rattling only my bedroom door rattles

    • @travisgulley2652
      @travisgulley2652 5 років тому

      dwayne dub you can use plate amplifiers to power car subwoofers indoors but the problem with plate amplifiers is that they are designed for 8 ohm subwoofers and if you run 4 ohm car subwoofers on a plate amplifier you could potentially damage a plate amplifier

  • @travisgulley2652

  • @FSXgta

    You can damage your sub by playing mids trough it. You can either get a low pass filter from another speaker or get a power amplifier with sub filter that would be ideal for power and the filter.

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  7 років тому +1

      This is actually a myth. You won't damage a subwoofer by playing high frequencies though it, it's just that either it will sound very bad (muffled) or the cone won't move at all. The amplifier will also heat up more because of wasted energy. HOWEVER the reverse is dangerous, you can certainly damage tweeters and midrange drivers by playing low frequencies through them, because they have far less power handling capabilities and will blow almost immediately. I have ruined several tweeters this way.
      Ideally yes you would use a low pass filter for it to only play regular subwoofer frequencies and sound good.

    Av receivers are 8 ohm stable if you run 4 ohm speakers or 4 ohm subwoofers on them wired at 4 ohms the receiver will shut off when you crank the volume up past 50 percent volume also the receiver will put out more power than what it's supposed to put out and the receiver will work harder than it's supposed to but speakers and subwoofers wired at 2 ohms is dangerous because the receiver will get extremely hot and capacitors inside the receiver will explode and the receiver will malfunction and fry on you

      as long as you hook it up correctly, and start with the volume low, it should not. The only thing which might damage your amp is if the subwoofer is really low impedance (like 4 or 2 ohms) and will cause the amp to heat up if you put it near max volume. The receiver I used is from sony and has temperature and overcurrent protection, and it still works fine. Of course you do this at your own risk, but for me (and the sony receiver I used) it worked with 0 issues.

    would it be possible to run a subwoofer off a home amplifier. I have looked around and I have seen home amplifiers that can give off a 4000 watt peak and a 1100 watt rms.
    does this amplifier run by its self or does it need to be connected to a receiver?
    because if you can connect a home amplifier to your home receiver shouldn't that produce plenty of power to say power two home tower speakers and a subwoofer all in the wattage range the amplifier and receiver supply?

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому

      a receiver is basically a speaker amplifier but if you have a dedicated amplifier like an inuke then you don't need to do this, you can hook it up directly to your source(like a PC) or a "preamp" subwoofer output that some receivers have

      no, you can only power a subwoofer with a receiver if you don't hook up speakers to it. I would recommend you get a home receiver to power your speakers that has a "preamp subwoofer out" port on the back, then connect that to a subwoofer amplifier which powers your subwoofer.

    • @evatheboxer7417

      Yes but you need a subwoofer amplifier

    • @joeyallcock1011

      Not without 2nd amp you use its pre outs to go to 2nd amp & a active Xover for bass management!!!

    So if you have a sub with only one coil do you still have to bridge the left and right

      Nope.

      Enderman LP I have a question so I have a yamaha 500 watt receiver and a kicker comp S and when I put the receiver on 7ch stereo the sub don't give alot of bass but when I put it on direct stereo the smaller speaker distorts how do I fix this

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  7 років тому

      What smaller speaker? If you're using a sub directly connected to a receiver like this, there should be no other speakers connected to the receiver. The volume needs to be up a lot for the sub to move, and that would make any other speakers way too loud.

      Enderman LP so then only the sub can play?

    ok so I have a 1000w Pyle sub that has a rca cable and I have a Yamaha av receiver is there any way I could hook that up?

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому +1

      And the RCA is directly hooked up to the sub with no amplifier or anything? Usually a subwoofer with an RCA jack is a powered subwoofer.

      +Enderman LP yeah it's not powered or nothing it's a www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EM7C85C/ref=s9_psimh_gw_d0_g267_i1?pf_rd_p=1c5f02ae-183e-4906-990b-5a293310a66c&pf_rd_s=blackjack-personal-1&pf_rd_t=Gateway&pf_rd_i=mobile&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=HH8PZCW4QEGMAD8A31HJ I got it and idk what to do with it at this point

    • @EndermanEngineering

      Oh yeah, so that connection on the back you can plug that straight into your receiver with a speaker cable and it should work.

      +Enderman LP I tried with a Yamaha av receiver and nothing happened

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому

      And you turned it up a lot? If your receiver works, and the sub isn't damaged, hooking it up with a simple cable should work. You're using a speaker cable, right? Not an RCA cable? Because those are very different things.

    How would i set this up with other speakers from the receiver as well

    • @EndermanEngineering
      @EndermanEngineering  8 років тому

      +LNP Gaming (Ginger Gamer) You would need to use a different receiver, because the subwoofer volume needs to be a lot higher than regular speaker volume

    • @pulleyluke

      +Enderman LP thanks for the quick reply, so i would run an input lets say from my computer out to two amps one running the sub and another running the mids and highs?
