Years ago, I had in my Honda CRX, a Cerwin Vega Stroker 18 and an Earthquake 200DHC 2000wrms amp. Now the Stroker 18D4 is in the home theater, with two 300wrms BASH amps in a 9.76cuft external box tuned to 23Hz. It hits deep and blends well with my Paradigm Studio 100 v3 towers. I love it! Eventually I will add a couple more 18" subs for fun.

Got started using car audio in the HT nearly 25 years ago. First was converting a Jensen 12" HTsub and replaced the driver with an Alpine Type S. Worked pretty well but ports were very small on the enclosure and chuffed pretty hard so a friend built me a bandpass enclosure for it and we swapped out the Jensen amp and it served me well for many years. The main project after that was dual Audiomobile Evo-R 12's in a 7.5 cuft enclosure tuned to 25hz with both ports open and 18 with one closed. Had that hooked up to a Mackie M-1400i for over a decade. Amp finally gave way and I went on a different path, but still have the Audiomobiles in case I want to let my youthful side out again haha

You did something on your video a lot of people don't do, you explain everything and you're very thorough, every question I had was answered with your video thanks again I would recommend your video for people that are doing the same thing that I'm doing. Lots of commenters covered the electrical and speaker theory side of things, so I'll add one more thing that don't matter a whole lot for home theater use: the environment that the speakers are designed for. A lot of home speakers (including subs) are designed with the expectation that they will be used in an environment with a pretty consistent temperature and humidity range. This is why there's a market for surround replacement and rebuild kits for popular vintage speakers- because more often than not, old speakers get kicked out into storage or used in a garage where the temperature and humidity is not always constant. Automotive speaker design, on the other hand, KNOW and EXPECT that there will ALWAYS be semi-extreme temperature and humidity changes- a lot of which are rapid (such as getting into your car in the winter and cranking the heat up). So, dollar for dollar, the average automotive speaker is going to be built using better materials to combat temperature and humidity changes. It's probably not something you can hear when using an automotive speaker indoors, but it will be something you will eventually hear using most indoor speakers in an automotive environment. This is precisely why I went through so many speakers in my "heated only when I'm out there" garage until I decided to switch to using aftermarket automotive speakers in the garage- then it was problem solved!

Subwoofer is a subwoofer car or home they all work the same. Your box will dictate how that subwoofer sounds more than anything. Larger boxes increase the efficiency of the sub and large woofers are generally louder than a Sub with the same motor but a smaller cone area. The enclosure acts as part of the subwoofers suspension, you get too small and it will have trouble moving because of the pressure. You get too big and the subwoofer will lose power handling capability and will act like it is in an open air environment. Generally speaking though car subwoofers are much louder, boasting a greater woofer excursion and larger motor and voicecoil allowing for higher power handling.

the biggest difference between car/hometheater subs: 1-hometheater subs are usually more efficient than car subs 2- home theater subs usually are capable of playing way lower than car subs...car subs usually are optimized for 40-60hz where as hometheater is optimized for 15-30hz

@@CajunReaper95 I'm talking subwoofers...enclosure wasn't in the equation...car subs usually have an fs of around 30-40hz...were as home theater subs usually have an fs of 25hz and lower (i have a dayton audio classic 15 with a fs of 17hz) ...not saying car subs can't play down to those extreme low freq...they're just not designed to do so...hometheater subs would be way more efficient playing 30hz and under than car subs...the dayton audio 15s i have has a sensitive rating of 83db at 30 hz...most cars subs can't make that claim.

@@remisouth5695 Most car audio subs have FS in the 30s and are optimized for sound between 20- 40hz. The only subs optimized for 40-60hz in car audio are the 6.5 and 8 inch subwoofers. Anything with actual cone are has too much mass to be have an FS as high as you stated. Look up Mr 18hz, this guy has a SPL car hitting SPL numbers in the 160s at 18hz. Home theatre systems don't get anywhere near that loud. Why? This is because their suspensions are super soft when compared to SPL car audio subs. This is because their Xmax is often half of SPL car audio subs. NOT ALL car subs are for SPL. If you look at SQ car audio subs you will find they usually play from 18hz and have a fs in the 20s with a higher speaker efficiency. Why? This is because they use often smaller parts with LESS moving mass than SPL subwoofers and softer suspensions that allow the speaker to hit the really lower notes better but with No authority in comparison. All of these are at the sacrifice of SPL. No matter what you do though YOUR BOX will have more to say about how a subwoofer sounds than the subwoofer itself. I've seen cheap subs sound amazing in custom boxes and I've seen expensive subs sound awful until they are placed in the right box. No matter what you box is going to control the sound, large sealed boxes will hit lower but at much less SPL, while a ported box will be louder, then you have 4th and 6th order bandpass boxes that some call one note wonders. Everything depends on box tuning and size.
Larger box = more efficient, more volume, less power handling
Smaller box = better punch notes, better mid bass, greater power handling.
Ported box = More efficient, more volume, but only at tuning frequency, requires a filter for 20hz and below
Sealed box = Less efficient, flatter sound curve, more accurate sound

Good video. When making any decision, it’s nice to know the ifs ands and buts.
Car sub speakers are more durable because they are built with materials and tolerances, to operate in extreme temperatures, light, and humidity.
Most have aluminum voice coils that dissipate heat more quickly.
Home theater sub speakers are built with lighter materials, tighter tolerances, and copper voice coils.
This allows them to be more reactive; reactiveness is especially advantages at lower wattages.
At higher wattages, the differences between the two become much less important.
As for the box, think of it as a shock absorber that needs to be tuned to work with the speaker's design, and the amp that drives it..

I use my Morel Tempo's in a t-line as my home audio mains, and I have used my Dual Peerless SLS 6.5 in a t-line, for my cars' substage!
However, there is a 'Yes' and 'No' to answer to this conundrum. As an example, music generally doesn't dip below 35 - 40 Hz, whereas most moves go to 20 Hz and below. If you look at the T/S parameters of home and car audio subs, they generally reflect that. Home audio subs often have a lower FS, suspension compliance, better inductance, (if it's a quality item).
Car audio also needs to cope with blending with your average 6.5" (in door, which isn't a good enclosure) midbass speakers, which for the most part, are only good for around 80Hz or higher. Your average Floor standing speaker is built better than a leaky car door enclosure, and can cope with lower frequencies, putting less pressure on a home audio sub, which means it can operate better in a lower passband.
Sure there are people like Pete aka Hexibase that can design aperiodic enclosures, and 3rd, 5th and 6th order variants that can cope when complex solutions are needed, but those types of design seem to be out of reach for those who rely on free speaker designing software ... hence why only a few like Pete even attempt it.

I remember as a kid my brothers wired a car speaker to an av receiver and it blew, but I don't think they ever thought about the impedances of either one but also my mind always wondered if the voltage difference of the two systems had anything to do with the speaker getting blown...
So my question is, Assuming both amps are providing the exact same output (500w @ 2ohms, for instance) is there any difference in the output of a 12V car amp vs a 120V amp?

Tipp for everyone who wants to diy a subwoofer:
If you are fine with larg subwoofer enclosures (one very big, or multiple less big) you can get A LOT more output for the money. However car subwoofer typically are designed for smaller subwoofer enclosures (due to space restrictions in the car). They will still work (make sound, even loud and potentially clean sound), but they waste quite some bit of the "bang for the buck" potentiall that usually comes with large subwoofer boxes.
    In a large enclosures:
A car subwoofer can probably handle more power, but also needs more power for the same SPL than a woofer that's designed for big enclosures.
I highly recommend simulating the Subwoofer in "winisd" (free software). There you can see for shure. And you will see that some lower power rated woofers outperform high power woofers (in larg enclosures). Even at max power handling.

Off course you can in the right enclosure with the right driver for your needs. I myself considered using car sub driver's in my DIY infrasonic tapped horn because of all the Xmax and it could be kept decently small. Sadly too expensive at here in germany. Louder than "home" driver's no though you can get the same umpf from a way smaller box. You can't damage a sub by a smaller or bigger enclosure than recommended. What does the damage is either too much excursion or too much electrical power. Over excursion is another case of too much power. Just mechanicaly not electrical.

The low impedance has to be 4 to 8 ohm to not hurt your home sub amplifier . Us the thiele parameters. Build your cabinets vertical and de couple the cabinets with 4 3/4 in bolts and crutch tips . Car amps require hi amp power supplies hot and costly. Dayton class d sub plates are more suitable. 8 is too little for deep bass, and cost more than a smaller magnet 10 or 12 . Dont over stuff poly fill for room use. You can build diy and save $. I ran some precision power 12s for years at home. To me, being 16 or 17 in 1998 real subs didn't exist outside of car audio: home subs were HTIB garbage as far as I knew.
Nowadays it looks to me like both car and home audio use the same tech. Car just does it with a higher fs. And car drivers seem slightly cheaper for the same x-max.
So now I'm biased towards drivers marketed to home users, because supposedly the lower fs means lower extension. I do wonder though...with enough power, does fs even matter...at least if going sealed? I wonder if say a Zv6 12 would match an HST 12 in its frequency curve in a sealed box, just do so less efficiently? When high excursion helps a sealed situation hit the lows why does sundown say 'not recommended' for their highest excursion drivers?

Hello, I hope this comment finds you well, I like your videos but sorry there is a couple of fail on this video, one biggest difference on car audio sub and home theater sub like the Dayton UM line is FS, which you never mentioned on the video, car audio subs are only meant to play at around 32hz (box tuned) or maybe mid 20's for rebassed or slowed song, but not below 20's which a lot of movies excel, and this is why your expensive subs like Monolith, HSU, SVS and GSG DIY are tuned below 20hz and at 6:21 you wired your sub to 1ohm and then you connect it to a 2ohm load amp. you also failed to mention about subsonic filters when using a sub and dj amp like how you have it set up (I made that mistake blew my Dayton um 18s with Edge of tomorrow movie) Maybe its late at night but you will be giving a lot of misinformation and hopefully none of your viewers will try to use a car amp and I'm sure you know why. you are feeling a lot of the bass because you are hearing and feeling higher hz bass which your 8in sub is giving you, I will assume that the FS of that 8in is close to 30s, I still like you though and keep up the good work.
