  • Challenging the White Gaze is a recording of a discussion between black women musicians, journalists, visual and performing artists involved in alternative music and culture. After the release of What Are You Doing Here? A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal the creation of a visual component to encourage black viewers who are struggling with their experiences being black in white-centric spaces that a community exists. More importantly, building a supporting environment where women could talk openly about their experiences - both the good and the painful - they’ve had within the metal, hardcore and punk scenes was imperative to building a community that over time, will expand to embrace other women other cities in North America.

As an older black man (45) who is into and plays death metal. I find myself praying for a black woman who loves metal to be my wife. This video makes it feel like I could happen.

I'm just tired of all the labels.. I feel ppl try to put us in these categories because they look at us and can't quite figure out how or where we fit in..honestly I'm too a point where I'm gonna do whatever the hell I want and not worry so much about what others think.

Your insight and alternative awesomeness are so spot-on. Surprisingly we are back at some of these points these many years later, but our presence in rock is massive.

Brilliant interview loved it!! Nice to see all these women talking about some of the things I and other black men and women have experienced, especially my sister, who grew up evolving as a goth in the middle of hackney east london, when walking around as she did ... black clothes big hair and platform boots was not the way!! MIlitia vox, love here man she is fierce, but not unneccessarily :)

+SKYTZOSAUROS Great job challenging status quo, and expectations attempts are made to force on women of color with independent minds.
      I now want a t-shirt that says "I Don't Give A S--t, You're Not Touching ME!"

This was absoulutely amazing. I feel like this should be held every year in a conference format similar to comic-con panels. I would love to hear black women talk about the issues they are facing in the music industry and scene more often.

I think that the ultimate goal is to make that dynamic a thing of the past. How are they able to graduate from that status to make it past tense.

Laina, stumbled on a long and nice article about your book, wow! Especially cool these Women, their music, Allgood. Gonna be working on the upcoming Coup album and movie soundtrack, knew there had to be this Camp, found it! Rock on & will send an email somehow for BigUps! ... now, since you Ladies flipped the script, where does a guy sign up to be a groupie? Won't take that back either ...!

I know and I'm moving to Houston it's going to kill me. I'm already looking for my type of nine when I get there. I think a lot of blacks in the South have a problem with being different. I grew up in Houston my family thought I was possessed listening to metal.
