    The best thing to happen to metal in the past ten years is the female singers. It's awesome to know their are black women into metal. Cool.

    I'm seeing so many people say "what she's saying is dumb!" or "nobody is discriminated I metal because I've never seen it!". How about you get over yourself and just take the time to listen to someone else's experience? It's nice that you've never seen it before, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't or hasn't happened.

      Before anybody can deny these women's experience, they should try taking a BLACK WOMAN into a metal concert!

  • @Nghilifa
    @Nghilifa 10 років тому +22

    It's always puzzled me that African Americans are told that they are too black to play music that they singlehandedly invented. That never made much sense to me at all. Aside from that, much respect to this woman. Rock on!

  • @josh999x
    @josh999x 10 років тому +43

    I have to say, the racism experienced by these women seems to be embedded in American culture rather than Heavy Metal myself, in the British scene people walk freely without judgement, i've even seen a woman attend a Angel Witch show in a burkha. Metal is a culture of outsiders, there's no need to make people feel like outsiders from a group of outsiders.

    This video is great. I'm a black woman and I love all genres of music. I have gotten some heat for liking Rock music but I don't care. I love it. This video made me teary eyed because music is my haven and it's where I find myself and my connections with other people. Music should be for any and everyone.

      +Darkhan Augustus Thanks bro! Fortunatly the nowaday metal is not the same as the one
      those women experienced!... I'm black mixed and went to the last
      Behemoth/Abbath/inquisition concert recently (Paris). Metalheads are mostly nice
      guies, even in extreme subgenre such as black death metal, and I talked
      to some of them several time after the set. They didn't see my skin
      colour (didn't even talked about it), but only my Behemoth hat and my
      inverted cross!!^^ There was even that hot girl, which was very very
      very firendly...! ;)

    ...I think I'm in love. Militia is brutal. Christ, maybe even more so than Masha Scream. Any metalhead who wouldn't want to have a beer with someone that passionate is loco. I'll have to order Laina's book. In my experience, most of us who haven't "grown out of" our metal "phase" will keep metal with us our whole lives because it's helped us cope in desperate times. Much respect.

    From my experience of gigs and festivals in the UK, this seems to be something of an American problem. The level of racism is horrifying. In the UK, generally, anyone exhibiting those sort of attitudes are very much a minority and are seen as knuckle-dragging scum. As a Metal fan, I've seen people of all ethnicities at the likes of Bloodstock, the SOS Festival, Hard Rock Hell and Sonisphere, as well as many of the gigs I've been to. But from what I've seen, as a culture, we British do tend to be a lot more inclusive and tolerant, especially in the Metal scene.

    See this kind of stuff makes me mad in a certain way. Yes Metal doesn't have many black people in it. Still people need to stop making metal look like it's predominantly white. I will admit that there is a majority, to be honest I believe it's predominantly white and Hispanic/Latino. Heavy metal is universal though it spans across the world. There are bands in the middle east, Africa, Japan, India, Indonesia, China, and a few other countries. I'm sure we all heard of Suffocation which has had black members. However, I think this goes into those unanswered questions in metal where we just shrug and can't provide a solid answer. I'm sure the artists, fans, and myself included don't really know why there aren't many black people in the metal scene.

    Nice to bring this topic to the surface but instead of 11 min of talking about their struggles, how about mentioning the other side - you know, the cool people who have embraced and supported them in the scene. Maybe even which bands (outside of Judas Priest) that they are into and why they love this bands. This could have been so much better.

  • @AnthonyRizzo2

    Anybody who says music does not have color is crazy! Music is at the epicenter of a persons identity. Music is the single most identifying mark of cultural uniqueness. The heartbeat of a people can be heard in the music they listen to and play. This is why this story doesn't make me raise an eyebrow because we the viewer know very little about the two women showcased on this video. All we know is that Heavy Metal is the soundtrack that expresses their inner rage.
    So to me that says a lot more about them than the hue of their skin and apparently the people at that presentation felt the same way because they were focused on the concert and not the black chick with the camera or the black chick on stage. In fact I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said their were no black women there. All I saw were a bunch of metal heads and isn't that the way it should be?

    "Judas Priestess" yeah, they already went wrong there. If women feel the need to be recognised in metal then why emphasize the fact that you are female? Just get together write a good album, get good live like all other metal bands and then perhaps they will be recognised , instead of turning women in metal into a gimmick. Absolutely pathetic. The same thing goes for that band "iron maidens". Also her claims of being attracted to "the loudest, fastest most intense thing" just shows her low understanding of the genre when extreme metal exists. If you want to play metal then play it , instead of being pathetic and needing to make a female version of another band. "Never sold out" as if the whole "Judas Priestess" isn't just a sell out. And this isnt even touching on the subject of the whole "black people" thing which is pathetic aswel. One of the most idiotic stories i've heard in a long time.

    I don't know. I am a white girl and grew up in a black neighborhood. I experience what people seem to want to call "reverse" racism. I don't feel that way, racism is racism if you ask me. I think these women were having problems more because they are women to be honest with you. Jimmi Hendrix, Ice-T with Body Count, etc. Ted Nugent famously states that he has modeled his career after black musicians that he admired greatly and if it weren't for them he wouldn't have a career and Ted Nugent is as rock as you can get. I think in America race is blamed way too often. I think in America the serious problem is the rich against the poor. Let me tell you something, in todays day and age, poor does not discriminate. We should be banding together like we did after 9/11. That sense of neighborhood patriotic oneness should not have been taken for granted. Now it is just like before. It's a shame.

    • @MrTiredmatt
      @MrTiredmatt 9 років тому

      its called 'reverse racism' because black on white racism is popular and PC. the mainstream media will only report on white on black racism

    • @annanniemouse6399
      @annanniemouse6399 9 років тому

      MrTiredmatt I know and they do it for a reason. They want people to be concentrated on the color of their skin in relation to each other. That way we don't notice that the rich are slowly crushing and eradicating the POOR, not black or white...POOR us poor folk gotta stick together,you know what I mean??

    • @MrTiredmatt
      @MrTiredmatt 9 років тому

      AnnAnnieMouse well the problem with that is most poor people are low/no information voters that vote democrat simply because they think they are supposed to based on their skin color or income. the democrats model is very circular and is designed to keep poor people poor and keep them voting democrat while alienating the from the republican party/all other conservative parties.

    • @annanniemouse6399
      @annanniemouse6399 9 років тому

      MrTiredmatt That is very true. The democratic party is very conniving in their purpose. I don't really believe voting matters much anymore. I think if people want a change, they need to be more hands on. A lot of people just feel ignorant to amendments. Including me. There is so much double speak. A lot of people just simply don't know what is going on anymore and don't have the time, energy, or interest to find out, but they don't realize how much their silence is going to affect their future and their children's future as well. We are in a sad state of affairs I think.

    • @talknewz7617
      @talknewz7617 7 років тому +4

      i AGREE with gender part, black women, they get it BOTH WAYS. But denying racism is easy for you, you are not black woman. And you don't live in a black ruled society. Don't even bring up the old "black racism"argument , it doesn't exist in America. Its not racist to hate oppresion, or your opressors. Its normal. Race +gender governs every part of a black woman's existence here.
