You can't be a german. It is very common over here to throw eggs (especially big eggs) to show your respect to someone who is very quite in their flat. One is not sure where this custom comes from. Some experts say that it probably has a pagan background.

About the middle lane: Germany is a transit country. Located in the middle of Europe, it has all kinds of traffic passing through. This means that on many highways (especially those with 3 lanes---that's why they have 3 lanes), the right line is packed full of semis during the day. Trying to squeeze in there with a car would be foolish, so many people develop a habit of simply ignoring the right lane. Sadly, that habit sticks even when the right lane is empty...

If you have a normal 9 to 5 Job and a normal tax bracket (steuerklasse 1 meaning single-household), and no other sorces of income, you don't actualy have to declare your taxes. The employer deducts the taxes from your wages (depending on how much you get they know how much you have to pay) and pays the taxes for you. Only if you have more deductables then normal (we all get a built in standart amount of 1.230 €) which would result in lower taxes it is advised to file for taxes to get your money back.

On income taxes in Germany: As part of being employed, you have to submit your tax information to your employer. That includes a "tax class" (the mentioned Steuerklasse), a number between 1 and 6 (1 is for singles, 2-4 for couples with different split levels, 6 for other cases). Based on that tax class, the employer MUST deduct taxes from your loan and send them directly to the tax office. If you have no special circumstances (deductibles, a second income, etc.), that amount matches the taxes you have to pay exactly, so you do not have to file a tax return.
It seems that in this case, the "exactly" was off by 5 Euros for some reason. Weird---there are very few circumstances where the employer would deduct less taxes than you'll have to pay in the end. The system is geared so you're never under if you do nothing.

As for the customized pedestrian lights: If there's a local famous and beloved character, chances are that they change at least some pedestrian lights at prominent crossings to that image. Examples include "Äffle & Pferdle" in Stuttgart, the "Piper of Hamelin" in Hameln and Elvis in Friedberg (where he was posted). And there's tons more to discover, as many depict local characters of historical import or characters connected to the city in question.

As an employee, you don't have to make a tax declaration, because the taxes are already deduced from your pay check. You only voluntarily make a tax declaration to get some money back for spendings which can be deduced from your taxes, so that you effectively paid too many taxes and will get some money back. For an employer, it is highly unkikely to get a supplementary payment, because that means that you generated more taxable income than declared on your wage notification.

If you are an employed worker, then by law, your work income has to be reported to tax authorities by your employer. So they will already know how much you've made, and crucially, tax will be deducted from your monthly pay at the source. It's only if you have other sources of income like capital gains or income from renting out property that you yourself have to report that via an income tax return.

    • @DunkelBisBunt
      @DunkelBisBunt Місяць тому +1

Even with capital gains often you will not have to do anything. For example if you have an ETF and you sell it with capital gains, the bank that held your ETF will automatically deduct the capital gains tax and send it to the state so that there is nothing left to do for you - the tax is already paid the moment you sell.

The thing with the egg on the balcony: if it was even the neighbour at all, of course it wasn't ok and a pretty aggressive thing to do. There are many people (and I feel they get more and more) who can't stand cigarette smoke. The way I understood it, the person who posted the question thought the smoke might have gone into the neighbours house when their bathroom window was wide open. In that case I kind of do understand why the neigbour might have felt really annoyed. Though it's not uncommon to smoke on the balcony, since smokers 'have' to smoke somewhere. Not sure on whose side the law would be in this case.
I remember we started to pay with Euros in 2002. But Deutsche Mark was still accepted by shops etc. for a while, so people could adjust to the conversion. I think 1999 was when banks/non-cash transfers started to use the Euro, at least that's what I read a while ago. Us 'regular people' started to have Euro coins and notes in 2002.
The country the car is registered in is written on EU number plates.
It looks like the last guy was worried he was being scammed, because the seller wouldn't agree to pickup. He probably worried he would pay for the item without ever receiving it in the end.

I stopped smoking about 6 years ago, but before I always went out on my balcony to smoke and there was never any complain about that. In one of my previous apartments I had neighbors which used their grill every day in the summer on the public backyard. So I was forced to close my windows every day for hours in the hot summer, otherwise the smoke would get inside. After a few days I did get angry and made a clear message, but I would never considered throwing eggs or something. This is crazy.

I heavily dislike smoking. It bugs me most when I'm waiting for a bus or in a queue where I can't really leave or must be somewhere near. Also in amusement parks - I visited one that actually had a policy and smoking spots and I loved it so much!
Well anyway, if your dad comes over and smokes at the balcony two times - even if I was outside and getting some of that smoke - I would be slightly annoyed and move on with my day. Unless that smoke got magicly sucked into my kitchen through the open window or something, but then they probably wouldn't know that.

Even if a man stands by my side under waiting point of the bus and I cannot go in distance because it is raining hard and I forgot umbrella, I nearly through out.
What is enoying me: When I was smoker I always tried to respect the wind, standing where it does not go to non-smokers. Young men especially refugees from other countries do not care about others, smoking and spitting where they like without respecting others. That is sad.

Ironicly, now that I think about it, for me it's been mostly white men, and some white women. And it's also usually older people which makes sense because less younger people smoke (at least not traditional cigarettes it seems).

    • @stef987
      @stef987 Місяць тому

@@ann18o96 i agree! Smoking has always been a thing in my family and when I was younger, something young people did to be 'cool'. Their ethnicity didn't matter at all. So I too don't think of migrants when I think of 'smokers', maybe even quite the contrary.
As for people spitting on the ground: that also was a VERY common thing to do for young people here maybe one or two decades back, and still is for some (I don't think they're all refugees). I think often it were people who considered themselves 'punks', spitting everywhere they wanted, to make a statement or something like that. Some time ago I was at a bus station, and a tall, blond man, probably in his (late?) 30s, was sitting there, repeatedly spitting like he was kind of making a sport out of hitting the same spot or something. It was REALLY disgusting, especially since he targeted the sidewalk in front of us. Then he turned to me and really nice and politely asked me for the time. In perfect German.

12:35 It's the other way around. The person who asked wants to pick it up. That saves shipping costs, but more importantly you can have a look at the product before paying it.
However the seller refuses to meet. One reason could be that the seller wants to receive the money and ship an empty box to the buyer (so it looks like he fulfilled his duty). He couldn't do that when they meet in person.

We have a lot of rules about driving and what to do but in practice we still dont follow those rules to the letter. We drive a little faster then the Speed limit and since there are a lot of trucks and a few slow drivers on the right lane. Because of this your regular driver who thinks they are fast enough to just stay in the middle lane will just be stuck there because they dont like the hassle of switching lanes over and over (to overtake a few trucks and then get back into the right lane) even though they should.

Driving in germany its always the dutch drivers i see blocking the middle lane (living in the west not too far from the border), I always thought its because they arent used to the autobahns speeds and think "im going super fast, no way theres someone faster than me on the right!" but maybe people do it more on vacation than at home i guess

    • @Cloney1337

I found myself doing it in the Netherlands too.
They have a 100kmh speed limit, try to get you at ever corner and have much larger fines then Germany.
So put your cars speedometer at 102 and just drive the same lane forever. As nobody should be faster ;)
Obviously the dutch still go way over the speedlimit, either by not being relentlessly hunted down like speeding Germans or by not caring.
But it feels just good to drive your 102, overtake the trucks driving 92-95 and just don't care what speeding yellow plates are doing. So we end up in the middle lane.
      Bane of the speedlimit.

9:29 In Germany, we have a derogative name for those that drive in the middle lane: "Mittelspurschleicher" (middle lane crawler/sneaker). Why would we have a name for them if we didn't have them? :P Unfortunately, there's a TON of those on the Autobahn and somehow they don't see anything wrong with it since it's "not really a violation". The "Rechtsfahrgebot" (rule to drive on the right) is not a "Linksfahrverbot" (prohibition to drive on the left) and Germans take words very literally. The latter would be taken more seriously.
I know enough people that don't realize they COULD get fined for it and feel like they are doing nothing wrong. Although their behaviour can cause traffic jams and is also very dangerous since it causes more overtakes and therefore more dangerous situations that can lead to bad accidents.
And you definitely DONT wanna have an accident on the Autobahn!

If the traffic allows for it, I try to move from the leftmost lane into the rightmost lane quickly after passing a Mittelspurschleicher, hopefully making some of them notice that even cars faster than them will move to the rightmost lane if there are no other cars directly ahead.

Hi Ryan, eggs are definitely too much. I wonder if you ever think about the other side.
You always talk about those who are angry, but 95% of Germans are considerate of the neighbors on their own. That's the norm - people are quiet because they don't want to disturb the neighbors, not because they'll get pelted with eggs.
The problem is the people who don't think about their fellow human beings, and ignorant is the adjective for that. Don't smile when you talk about the other side. Think about what would happen if everyone acted like they were alone in the world.
But other than that, great channel.

Yes. And there's a reason for taht. You can stay on the middle lane (or the second from the right), if there are more than two lanes and you'll experience some traffic on the right lande every then and when. So when you maybe drive with 150 and you have slower traffic on the right lane, you are allowed to stay on the mid lane, even if the right lane traffic is very sparse. Of course there are a lot of idiots who stay on the mid lane, even if the right lane is free ore with a speed difference of 20 km/h against the right lane. This is not how this rule is meant.

  • @NetzKaiser

Funny idea for a reaction. It is kind of a big issue if it "should be allowed" to use a different Ampelmännchen or not. Because it is "strictly illegal", Germans like to fight about it. That ist a kind of our culture. 😅😉😳 Search for "Ampelmännchen extra 3" or something similar. Maybe "Ampelmännchen heuteshow".
The topic with the middle lane is a kind of "common misconception". "If I drive faster than 90 km/h or if I don't drive a truck, I should be allowed to drive on the middle lane. We are the free people, we are free to drive without rules. (proverb: Freie Fahrt für freie Bürger! ~ We are the free people, we are free to drive without rules.)" And some people call them "Mittelstreifenschleicher" ( ~ middle lane creeping snails). Germans and cars are probably like Americans and guns. 😅😉😳

Germans turn into maniacs one they enter a car in the drivers seat. I mean a lot of people have lane discipline yes, because you get honked at instantly if you don't. We are driving too fast and most people know where the speed cameras are on their usual routes. Most people drive big cars (suv) and can't properly handle them. Meaning they either drive too carefully or like it's others responsability to not crash into them (even when their lane would need to wait).
I tried to find what "Rettungsgasse" means in english and it's giving me "corridor for emergency vehicle access" - what the hell xD Anyway people are bad at keeping _that thing_ free. If you have build one then there's motorcycles using it to get through the traffic jam.
In my opinion, for the speeds that we are driving at and for the big cars a lot of people have, this is irresponsible and a big mess. And most people become aggressive like their playing an online team game or something...

I just leave bad movies too before the end. Maybe it also has something to do with age (?) . I don't have the time to watch bad films and so by going I can "send" feedback (that I don't like the film at all) to everyone else who want's to notice.
But that happens very rarely and only with such a bad story that everything that follows is actually already clear, or has been presented in a better form by much better films.
It's similar to putting away a novel a novel because because the author has written it according to formula and you've read (or heard) the whole thing (type of) so many times that you just don't want to bother with it.
Then you were probably the wrong target group. I would never have done that when I was young, even because everything was “new” (to me).
That's why "good" is of course extremely subjective.

Our local Autobahn was on construction for the last five years to make it a 3 lane out of a 2 lane (5y because they had to build 16 new bridges). Now there are many people driving in the middle, which is totally annoying. I guess the problem is, that they never learned how to drive on a 3 lane Autobahn, because in former days more than 2 lanes were only to find around really big cities. So they just had nowhere to practise it and now are just asked too much of. Hopefully the next generation of drivers will learn it properly, due to the new Autobahn they have to practise it.
