    This video was the first time I ever saw Queen perform. I was 26 yrs old and thought I had never seen a more beautiful man than Freddie Mercury. I'm 72 now and still remember it like it was yesterday! Still feel the same way about him and Queen. It just got better (like them) over the years.

    This was their first big hit. Top of the pops was a televised top 40 tv show in the UK. The lyrics are very tongue in cheek.
    Freddie had naturally waving hair. Freddie only wore black nail polish on one hand. Brian wore white on one hand too.

  • @mikecaetano

    The video may have been from their performance on Top of the Pops (more or less a British version of American Bandstand), but the audio was from the studio version of the song. That's why the background vocals are so tight, why they have that effect (a chorus or a flanger), and why it sounds like there are two guitars even though that's all Brian May.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 4 роки тому +1

      Considering that your standard promotional music video then would be a band either playing live, or miming a performance to a studio track like this, anyway (though there was some straying from that formula here and there), a TOTP performance may as well be used. :D

  • @lollinelson5549

    This is such a great song, and I believe their first charted song besides Seven Seas of Rhye. Freddie wrote it about a high priced call girl. But you are so right when you said it sounded kinda like pop and yet had great Rock elements. It was so unusual for the time. Freddie and Roger ran a clothing booth, Roger said they were ripping off people. This is before Queen. But Freddie found the most unique items to wear. Everything he wore in his 20 year career was unforgettable!! Great reaction! Please do White Queen at the Rainbow and if you want to hear live lyrics that will blow your mind, you must do Somebody To Love, live at the 1981 Montreal Concert! Every song there was epic!! Favorites include Save Me and Dragon Attack!! Thank you again!!!

    • @flybeep1661
      @flybeep1661 4 роки тому

      "Freddie and Roger ran a clothing booth" never heard that before. Where did you get that? I think it's totally false as it wouldn't make sense at all. Roger, together with May were already performing, then they met Freddie and founded Queen (and took on Deacon at bass). So what you're saying, they just casually ran a clothing booth beside it. BULLSHIT buddy.

    • @melissabattles3196
      @melissabattles3196 3 роки тому

      @@flybeep1661 LOL, actually, it's true. There's even a funny story either Roger or Brian (can't remember which, but I think it was Brian) tells about when Freddie and Roger were running the shop: Freddie had gone across the street for a cup of coffee or something one day. Before he left the shop, he made the mistake of taking off his jacket and hanging it on one of the racks. When he came back, Roger had sold it, LOL! He said Freddie went running out into the street, caught up to the guy who'd bought it, ripped it off him, saying "Give me back my jacket!" and gave him his money back. They ran the shop for just a short while, after Freddie had gotten to know Brian and Roger through being friends with Tim Staffell, Smile's lead singer. Little did they know what history they were all going to make together when Freddie replaced Tim and "Smile" became "Queen!" :D

    Fabulous classic! Queen put the glam in "glam rock!" This song was pretty much what catapulted them into the public eye. The ballad is about a high class call girl (aka courtesan) fyi. "top of the pops" was for all up and coming artists and unfortunately, it was required for the band to mime/lip sync to a playback track. Even the drum symbols were fake. The experience must have been pure torture for them to have to mime and also a major insult to their artistic talent and professional integrity.

    Excellent reaction - you have a good sense for the great bands. Queen really constructed those songs in the studio, with all the layering - of course they could also pull it off live, but they did lots of layering, and effects for the recordings. It's sooooo good to see people like yourself experiencing this stuff for the first time, makes me jealous.
    Queen altho' a rock band played music of almost every genre, from a bit of opera in Bohemian Rhapsody, all the way to gospel in someone to love and all points in between.
    My first ever stereo headphone experience was 1976 and my dad had bought a proper stereo music centre and headphones I played Night at the Opera and when I got to The Prophets song... 13yr old mind blown!
    I think Queens eclectic style meant I listened to a wider range music than my peers, cost me a sh!t ton of money over the years but well worth it.
    Try The Show Must Go On, the last thing Freddie Mercury recorded before his death
    Here's the story en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Show_Must_Go_On_(Queen_song)
    If you fancy expanding your rock horizons lend an ear to:-
    Take The Power Back or Bullet In The Head by Rage Against the Machine
    Toxicity or B.Y.O.B. by System of a Down
    Pisces or Outlander by Jinjer
    or some Motorhead (Stone Dead Forever is my fav), Wolfmother( Love Train) or Rival Sons (Pressure and Time or Run From Revelations) for some newer but old school rock.
    Mebbe dive into some psyche', folk... so much out there :)

    4:52 It is but it's Brian May playing both and layering, he is lead guitar in Queen, always has been. He's as much of a genius as Freddie was on vocals, they are all immensely talented.

    It was called 'glam rock' glam being short for glamour, a lot for British rock bands in the 1970's blurred the line between male and female appearance, with clothes and make up, David Bowie would be a good example, another would be Marc Bolan, lead singer of 'T Rex '.
    Top of the Pops was a weekly British music show, televised live, with bands in the studio, an audience and showcasing the latest bands and singers in the top 40 UK selling records, it was watched by millions every week. I queued many many times outside the BBC Television studios in west London to get a free ticket and was lucky enough to see all of the above perform........:-)

    They met at a musical "college" and they were all #1 in their class. ( vocals, guitar, bass, & drums) which kinda explains why their so bad ass!

      Richard Oberlander not true. None of them were music majors, nor studying music formally at all.
      *Freddie Mercury had a degree in Graphic Design.
      *Brian May had (at the time) his Master’s degree in Astronomy (and now holds a PhD in Astrophysics)
      *John Deacon holds a First Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering
      *Roger Taylor started off studying Dentistry, but then switched majors and got his degree in Biology.

    Brian May the guitar player is also an astrophysicist PhD. I wonder what he does in his spare time. And he made that guitar out of an old mantle piece

    I'm not much of a Queen fan but I do like "The show must go on" Preferably a cover from one of the America got Talent episodes or shows, heavily covered. but is one of Freddie's best before he passed away. It is definitely about the last Encore/Curtain Call of a show for an entertainer. I promise from an entertainers perspective this was the Coda of Freddie. Off the Innuendo album. Very dark dramatic song coming with the grips of the entertainers mortality. Sort of a battle cry for all entertainers to make each performance the very best as if it was their very last one. This one is up your alley. And must say make it part of your own performance. I'm not much fan of hip hop or rap. But I do like the very best of Whether its Doctor Dre DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, Emminem, Slick Rick. And SHOUT OUT to NATE DOGG and WARREN G (REGULATE).

    Love queen and Freddy is a killer vocalist but you love those harmonies because they were producing the shit out of thier stuff. Most of the coolest stuff they do instrumentally and vocally is constructed in the studio and they could not reproduce it live. They killed it in production room and boom they are selling out stadiums and having to use backing tracks and letting freddy's charisma and improve carry the show.
