  • This is such a popular plant to buy during Christmas. These plants can be very difficult to grow if you don't have the right conditions for the,.. if the air is too dry this plant will suffer.. if the soil becomes too dry this plant will suffer... if you over water.... well i think you get the point..lol... However I would give it a try. when you finally get the hang of growing this plant it's a beautiful specimen and very rewarding.

    I have one of these, a couple of tips:
    If you keep them outside in the summer, they really flourish. Mine is three years old and about 5’8 now.
    These plants will die in the cold, be sure to bring it in when the temp is around 45°. However, as long as it has water, it can take a high amount of heat.
    As the plant grows, keep transplanting into bigger pots. Of course, eventually it may get too big for your place, and you may have to make a decision about what you want to do with it.
    These plants may look similar to the northern pines, but are not really the same. There may be a degree of toxicity to them that could affect your pets or you if you try and consume parts of it.
    These are nice, pretty little trees, and if treated well, will grow and grow until they get too big to rehome!

      You're right about these trees being mildly toxic to animals, however, at least in my experience, they don't seem too appealing to animals. I have 3 dogs,4 cats, and 2 parrots, but not one of them has ever tried nibbling on any part of the tree, despite it being easily accessible to all of them.

    Dec. 2020: I finally bought my 1st Norfolk Island Pine. Found out it's not really a pine tree, but a tropical plant from the South Pacific. That's why they perish below 35° outside and prefer humidity indoors with temps of 50-85°F (or so they say). This could become my year-round Christmas tree 🌲⛄ 🌲

    • @sandrastreifel6452

    That NIP looks great. Plants often have poorly developed root systems when they get larger - I think I would keep it rather underpotted like yours - otherwise, they tend to be very loose in the soil and become floppy

    I'm so glad you made this video. I know I'm late. But, I just got a Norefolk island pine. I'm raising it in my room because I live where we have winter. So, it's good to hear you can successfully raise them indoors. I've not had much success with keeping plants alive. However, I had a flourishing pink poinsettia that lived for an entire year before death.

    Hi Bill my Norfolk pine is about 14 to 15 years old I got it at a nursery I use to work at. it's gone through three moves with me and finally this last move is to a house that we bought so I was able to plant it out front with some Tasmanian tree ferns. When I bought the tree it was about 2 foot tall and now it about 12 feet tall and we had to top it because we got solar and it was gonna block the sun from hitting our panels. Thanks for that aerial shot that was beautiful I even took a screenshot and I'm going to use it for my screensaver I hope you don't mind ;)

    I planted one a year ago in my garden (I live on the opposite side of the world from Norfolk Island) and it's doing well. I planted it mainly because they say it grows straight even in windy places.
    It was around 130cm when I bought it and now it's around 190cm. It has grown more branches and even branches on branches on the side where the wind hits it, I think in an attempt to keep growing straight as the weight of the branches would counter the force of the wind blowing it the other way.
    The trees are quite popular around here; people usually plant them when they get married. Near my house there is one that is at least 30 years old and it towers above any other vegetation.

    I bought mine last year and it has new shoots all over it. Since September, when sun got low enough in sky where it managed to shine through the south-facing windows again, the tree has been growing like grass after a July rain storm. It probably grown close to a foot just since September alone. In fact, it even has brand new shoots spouting from the very crown of the tree. All I did was: Transplant it to a pot big enough for it to grow, Keep the blinds open so the sun can get to it, Close the heat/ a.c vent located directly above the tree, Feed it real good every 5 to 6 months, Water it real good once a week, and Cut off any dead branches that would appear at the bottom. The humidity around the tree maintains itself simply through evaporation of soil moisture and cooking in the kitchen. Nothing too complicated.

    Ah, 3:05 explains my permanently curly lower branches. I googled why they're like that and didn't find an answer, because the closest thing was getting droopy due to lack of water, but they're not droopy, they are firmly set in that curl. So I guess I let it dry out at some point and they just got stuck that way, even when I got back to more frequent watering.
    I think I have one of "the other" species - the one with thinner, softer branches. Also they grow in twos instead of sixes, although that might be due to younger age, idk.

If you live in Florida ,California, Mississippi, south and North Carolina , Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama and coastal Texas, this plant will be great for you. If planted in the ground be prepared for a HUGE tree, this tree can live for hundreds of years and there trunks grow very large. They are slow growers as the mature. I would say that their roots are somewhat soft.

    Can you trim the leaves down if they grow out to far?

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  Рік тому

      I don't see why not. Just be mindful of where you trim as it will likely not send out new growth on the branch... it will likely always look pruned.

    Can you plz make a video on proper pruning of these trees? Mine needs it and Im not sure if you cut certain branches will "bruise" them and cause stress. Seems the only pruning I can find makes them look like bonsai trees. Theyre cute and all, but mine looks like this one.... I like the bushiness of it, seems natural. Great videos btw.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  4 роки тому

      If you have Facebook you can post some photos to the PlantzNThings whats growing page. Without seeing what it looks like its hard to answer... as they age... and the branches get longer there can be some droop and that can be normal

    Your Norfolk Island Pine is beautiful! It has grown great since last year. :)
    I never seem to have any luck with them. :/
    Btw. some time ago you did an all your cactus/succulents video. Have you thought about doing one for all of your orchids? It would be really fun to see how many you have. It seems to be a lot!
    Like always, a great video. You always inspire others to keep trying new things!

    We live in FL and had planted one of these last spring after we had it in a pot for a while. It is about 5 ft now and actually grew more than 1.5 ft after being planted in our backyard. But we had 29-32 Weather for last 2 days. I had covered the top with trashbags these last 2.days. but tonight it won't drop below 35F so I removed the bags and nicely watered it But the top fresh or smaller branches now look a little saggy and kinda beige or light brown. Did this happen because I covered it with trashbag or the cold still affected it?

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure... I've never has one grow to my ceiling yet.... I'm not sure if they would branch out after pruning.... personally I would discard the old tree and start fresh with a new one. If you prune the tree and it does branch... it will likely loose its pleasing form

    I bought one from Walmart this Christmas. I thought it was a Northern evergreen but discovered it's actually a tropical plant. I have had limited success with plants...always giving them too much "love & care" & they croak on me. I guess that's why my wife is living so long b'cause I do quite the opposite...sorry darlin lol! My plant does not have a central leader like yours but quite a few & I don't know if it's possible to encourage the plant to develop one. Maybe you or someone can help me here. Your pot looks a bit small for a plant that size which means you may have to water it more often to stop drying out but what do I know. I'll be swearing at my plant & starving it into submission to keep it alive...seems the only way to success...just like some women...hahahahaha!
