    I like your video. And I've kept my Norfolk island pine trees in temps as low as 35 digress Fahrenheit in the pot. They seem to do fine with it. And I set them where they get direct sunlight outside. But that's only after a week in shade though. Good video!

We are certainly bless with lots of natural light (thats one of the things I was looking for when purchasing a home), but many of my indoor plants come from our small apartment and even in there I would chase the natural light and open wide the blinds to use what ever little window we had to grow majestic beauties like the bird of paradise. We just need to work with what we have available. May you have a wonderful day and thank you for being part of the Community!

    So helpful, thank you! Question - wondering when this plant is too big to separate? I just bought one that is about 6 feet tall with two stalks. At least it looks like 2 stalks above the soil, but I'm afraid to try to separate when the tree is this large?

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  2 роки тому +2

      Hi thanks for your kind comment/question! I would say you can always try to divide a tree as long as you can manage the digging and tree weight. I can see a six feet tall tree being divided easily as long as the shoots you see are really a completely new tree. But if they are not then it will definitely be difficult to separate and that tells you that you should stop and not try any further because it is probably just a new growth of the main tree and it will kill the main tree if separated. While dividing my trees I got less divisions then what I first thought because they look like new shoots and then when you clean all the roots you can clearly see is still part of the main trunk.
      At the end is all up to you. For example, I have divided twice my bird of paradise plants but there’s a pot with multiple new shoots growing but I can clearly see that they are tooooo entangled so it is not worth it to divided them. So that plant will forever continue growing with the new shoots.
      I hope this message was helpful and I appreciate your comment. Thank you for being part of the Community!

    I'm so grateful I came across your UA-cam videos thank u so much for the info on this pine tree my sister gave me one about 4 years ago and it is slowly growing I can't wait tell it gets taller. Any info on what kind of Soil is needed for this kind of pine tree

      Hi Norma! Congrats on being the owner of the majestic Norfolk Island Pine Tree! Yeii! What an awesome gift your sister gave you! Kudos to the sis and thank you for sharing your kind comment, brightening my day with your awesomeness, being part of the Community and for the question. As for the soil any well draining soil will do. It is tought that a sandy soil is best because you see these trees in the coastal areas of Australia, but in pots or ground they are able to adapt very quickly to any soil as long as you keep the soil moist but never too wet that can lead to root rot. In my case I use the soil that I create over here in the garden by composting all our plants, woods and gras clippings, and every year I check the top of the pot and if the soil level has lowered then I top it up again. The plants eat minerals from the soil so as it continues growing the tree remember to top the soil and you can also aerate the top soil with a garden hand fork. I always suggest this almost in every single one of my videos that way you get no flies, fungus and so forth. Hope this helps. May you have a wonderful day!

    Hi! super informative videoo❤. any idea why my lower branches are doing fine but one of the middle branches have turned brownish? is it the light or water? please advice ❤

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  2 місяці тому

      Hi, glad you found this video informative and congrats on having your own awome Norfolk Island Pine. If you see that your plant at the end of the branches is still producing new baby leaves these should be a lighter green color and very soft, plus the overall feel of the tree when you touch the branches feel soft to the touch, then the tree is in a good state and the middle branch that has turned brown could be just a stress episode showing up now - like for example a period of overwatering or not watering that induced stress on the plant, the plan survived it but still suffered and is now showing it. If the overall plant is not as described before with new healthy leaves forming then theres a current stressor. If the soil is hard to the touch it needs water to be moist, it should always stay moist. If the soil has to much water and it has a bad smell to it like egg then is getting rotten roots due to overwatering it, remove from pot and replant. The plant needs 6 or more hours of light, just keep her in a sunny spot remember this is a tropical tree. She is a strong cookie so she wouldnt complain for direct sun, less sun can kill her but direct sunlight no. Hope this helps, I am no expert so just sharing from my experience.

    I have a Norfolk pine that I've had for 31 years. It has grown to approximately 3 1/2 ft tall. All lower branches are gone but the top branches are growing very long. It is now out growing its space in circumference but I'm afraid to prune or cut back the length of the branches. I don't want to damage it after all these years! Will it hurt it to shorten the branches?

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Рік тому

      Hi Gayle! Congrats on your amazing Norfolk Pine! Wow 31 years! Wow wow wow! We definitely want to treat that baby with lots of love. As I always say every plant is different and so just in case we have a temperamental plant I always suggest to start little by little … meaning cut a few inches of the branch you would like to prune and then see how it goes … then a week or so later prune again and so. Pruning the branches does not affect the tree as long as you are using clean shears and continue providing the awesome care that you have been providing to your tree. You might see new growth in the future in the area that you pruned. Hope this helps. Thanks for your kind comment and sharing your love for the Norfolk pine tree. Doesn't the dry branches fall on their own? too scared to prune mine but I can tell they're dry

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  2 роки тому +3

      I love your comment! I was just like you years ago scare to prune my baby plants. I totally understand, you don't want to hurt your babies. But, I can tell you from experience that when you prune the plants and remove any dead branches it helps the tree grow bigger, more vigorous and grow stronger. You can totally wait for the branches to fall off by themselves, but the problem is that this may take a long time and in the meantime is blocking the air flow, and light to other branches that are alive, leading to more dead branches and also less branch growth which leads to tree thinning. Usually I let tiny leaves fall by themselves but for tree branches I always try my best to prune it well. Hope my comment was helpful. Thanks for your kind comment, and being part of the Community! May you have a wonderful day!

    Gow do you propagate a Trunk when its too tall?

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Місяць тому

      Hi! Congrats on having a tall Norfolk Island pine tree! The way I would recommend to propagate it is by cuttings or layering. Cuttings would be the easiest way. When the tree is tall and big is better to not try at all to divide the trunk because you could affect the root system and loose the whole plant. Hope this helps and thank you for your comment and for being part of our amazingly kind Community!

    My tree sits is in a south facing window. I water and mist regularly and have a pebble tray with water under the pot. There's new growth on upper branches but still find smaller lower branches drying and falling off. What am I doing wrong?

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Рік тому

      Hi there in my experience we have to modify according to the location and the plant. It is awesome that you are watering and misting your plant regularly and providing a great amount of sunlight by having your tree facing a south facing window. It seems to me that the plant is getting a big amount of sunlight, and this dries up the plant quickly, so you need to water the soil more often. Do not water by placing the water in the water plate with the rocks but instead water the soil directly until you see water coming out from the bottom of the pot. Also having a humidifier close to the plant might be helpful to keep the plant hydrated. In my case I water my tree most of the time once a week with a gallon of water and now I have him facing also a south facing window next to my big strelitzia nicolai. I need to do an update on my awesome tree for you guys. Also, for how long have you had your tree? The tree takes time to establish and get accustomed to a new location or pot so it might be just stress. When I got my trees, they went through extreme stress from the weather change at the store and then coming home, and even with the good soil, water and sun the plant ha multiple branches that were dry up. It seems your plant has old stress too, just cut the dry branches and continue taking great care of your tree. Your tree is giving you new growth so it seems it likes the location, and it will surely grow soon. Hope this helps. Thanks for your comment and being part of our kind Community!

      Thanks for the quick reply! Just bought it this past Dec for Xmas. We don't get a lot of sun here over the winter months so I'm actually wondering if there is not enough sunlight even though it's south facing. But, as you say it might be recovering from the stress of moving from the plant store to my home. This is my 2nd Norfolk. My 1st one died, I think from underwatering. Sure hope I have better luck with this one.

      Also if it’s brown only in the middle do I cut it?

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  2 роки тому +1

      Congratulations Alaska on being the proud owner of a Norfolk Island Pine Tree! Brown or yellow is never normal. That is a very dried and dead leaf. I always suggest to do the touching test. If you are highly sensitive to plants wear gloves. You can touch the healthy green leaves and they will feel very soft to the touch not spiky at all, but a dried or dead leaf will feel rough and spiky. I suggest to cut from the spot in the branch that is brown all the way out (the video shows many branches that I cut like this). And any little dead brown ends just cut those endings if and only if the remaining leaves feel healthy.
      Always keep your tree soil watered. And the leaves will show healthy growth in no time! Hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and thank you for being part of the Community!

    Aren’t these plants toxic for cats? I read that somewhere.

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Рік тому

      Hi Karen, Thanks for your comment and worrying about our beautiful fur babies. You are awesome. The Norfolk Island Pine tree is not as toxic as many other plants but yes it can cause digestive problems if they ingest the needles. All our 3 cats are trained to not eat, bite or play with our plants which we have lots and lots so I do not worry that they will have such a problem. Thanks be to God. We do have toxic plants to cats indoors but either they are in a high furniture piece that they cannot reach or a huge pot like for example our giant bird of paradise. I have so many plants to update you all with. They are all gigantic now, and the house has changed so much, plus we have another cat woot woot exciting times! Thank you again for your comment and for being part of our kind Community. May you have a wonderful day! I will make a video in the future about the plants that are toxic to cats and the plants that are considered safe for cats and how we trained our cats to not play or bite our plants. Lots of content coming soon!
