We have a Norfolk Island Pine and it has become our most beloved house plant. We thought we were crazy for adoring him so, until we have noticed visitors being drawn to him, too. His name is "Rev," short for Reverie. He has grown at least 3' since my mom gifted him to us. I was worried he would eventually outgrow his corner of the room, but saw one at someones home that was at least 9' tall, and it appeared they grow up more than out. It seems I will be growing old with this plant! ❤️🌲
You can most definitely place these pines in direct sun- it’s just a gradual process. I have a family member in Florida who has theirs in the lanai in full sun almost all day and it has done fabulous. And looks fabulous too!

I bought mine back in 2018 and it's growing like a weed. In fact, it's slowly taken over my dining room. Within the next couple of years, I'm going to have to find another place to live that has higher ceilings just so it will have room to grow. I simply just: Transplanted it in a bigger pot, placed the pot on a couple of bricks to keep the root tips out of the water, moved the tree in front of the south facing window to get full sun for at least 7 months of the year and partial sun rest of the year, feed it about every 4 to 6 months and water/ mist it once a week, and closed the heat/ ac vent. The rest, it pretty much took care of itself. As a result, it's growing like grass after a July rain.

These trees are acid loving plants. So a high PH soil mixture. When you prune bottom branches to promote growth the needles from the branches adds acid back to the soil.

Yes, we have many of these type of trees where we live, in Israel. It likes warm and moist climate. It can grow really really tall, so one has to make a hole in the ceiling or plant it outdoors eventually. It also needs space for its roots. It is a beautiful tree.
Believe it or not, I have this plant outside(Fresno,Ca) under my breezeway with a ficus, also in the ground next to my elephant ears,which are in a pot. The Norfolk is completely shaded facing northeast along with the ficus, which is facing southeast. There's a good amount of humidity under that breezeway because of all the plants,jade,ivy,sago,ficus,azalea, and pomegranate. They all do really well. Oh,the reason why I'm saying this is because my daughter in law just gave me a Norfolk, and I'm going to put it outside in the ground in the same area. I hope it does just as well.
I've had my Norfolk Island Pine for over 30 years. It's starting to look like something is off...I'm a bit worried. I am going to re-pot it to see if that helps.
I live in Toronto Canada and my neighbour have me her 4 foot root bound Norfolk pine. It’s about 3 feet from the east facing window, but may be getting hit by the radiator heat. I have a humidifier nearby, set at 60% humidity and have a grow light on it. The needles on the 3rd set of branches from the top are getting pretty brown. Should I take the grow light off of it and move it away from the winter?
I love my pine all year long, not just during the holiday season. Did you know that when you buy one it’s always three or four plants positioned together to make it appear as one tree? Otherwise, the one plant would look lopsided, and it would lean. Thank you for uploading this!
I clicked on this video because my mom has a Norfolk Pine and it’s been going strong since this time last year! It is right next to a window though. It gets pretty direct sunlight and has never burned. it has tons of new growth and none of it is brown. Do you think it would still do better farther away from the window? Have you ever had any luck separating the smaller trees when they're planted with several trees in one pot? I got mine from Home Depot, who sources them from Costa Farms. I'm concerned that the trees might suffocate eachother's roots and struggle as they get older. I don't want to kill 4 trees so that one can be successful.
I've had success doing this with 5 trees braided as one. I actually soaked the entire plant in a tub of warm water to slowly work off all the soil around the roots and untangle them the best I could. I immediately planted them in a circle around each other in a much larger pot using a mix of potting soil, pumice, and some worm castings. All of the trees thrived and it's been a few years they've enjoyed their new home. I believe this was done around spring time and some of the roots were even damaged, but the trees bounced back with some TLC. I should note when I undid the roots, I found rubber bands towards the base keeping the braid together. I assume this was done young to train the trees, and I've seen similar bands/ties on braided money trees that I've also separated. So I'm happy they've been liberated from their shackles. Based on my experience, you probably don't need the tub of water, but try to preserve as much of the roots as possible, maybe taking a bonsai root rake or equivalent to work away the soil. Placing the trees about 6-8 inches from each other created a nice full effect of interweaving branches, though they all seem to grow at different rates which I think is also kinda neat.
Hi Barbara! This time of year they are in the resting period and you will not see any growth. Just maintain adequate water during this time. Once spring arrives you will see new growth emerge at the tips. During it's growing period (spring/summer) you can fertilize once a month using a balanced fertilizer.

My Norrie is in South window with evergreens outside, but it is under a fluorescent light fixture with 2 bulbs. The bottom branches have been turning brown! Can this be from overwatering? Otherwise it is beautiful! About 4-1/2 feet tall with another growing from it about 3 feet tall. It just gets spotty sunshine and I have a humidifier that only reads 35 humidity. A different site told me to mist it twice a week! Should I NOT mist it?
It's really not practical to pick up a large, wide plant & carry it to the sink. It will be even heavier after watering. The best way for me is to have the pot on a large saucer, water it thoroughly, then remove the water in the tray with a turkey baster. I do the same with my huge Hoya.
My son abandoned his and left me to save it. Of the 5 or 6 trunks it once had, I could only rescue one, but it's doing very well. However, I loved the way it looked before and was wondering if there's a way to get more trunks to grow again? Hi Brooke! Sounds like it did take on some cold damage due to those cold outside temperatures. I would recommend following the care in the video moving forward. Although we cannot reverse cold damage it may rebound in the home. Too little water, and too low of light can also cause branches to droop.
I just got this plant from Walmart should I spray it down with name oil or will that hurt it? I like to do that preventatively whenever I get a new plant from Walmart or Lowe’s because a lot of the times they have spider mites… But I’m worried I’ll hurt him!

But we had 29-32 Weather for last 2 days. I had covered the top with trashbags these last 2.days. but tonight it won't drop below 35F so I removed the bags and nicely watered it But the top fresh or smaller branches now look a little saggy and kinda beige or light brown. Did this happen because I covered it with trashbag or the cold still affected it?

Correct.... no scent...I plan on going by tree farm in November and grabbing cut off branches and and placing a couple in it's pot for FULL Christmas effect.

@Noah Tunnell yeah, as you said, now it has a tiny baby tip at the side of the top and another one is trying to sprout. Still healthy but I guess it will become weirdly unshaped when these tips grow. :/
Oh great. I killed it. Will it grow again if I cut it back to just the main stem and bring it inside now? If you want to help this plant get the word Pine out of its name! Or add the word ‘tropical’ to the name! I moved up from Florida and considered my Norfolk a friend for several years. I figured it was a pine that handles winter not a tropical. Duh. I’m sad. How do you get the plant to grow more healthy leaves,it been growing and all the leaves at the bottom are gone help.

My 2 trees are already over 6 meters tall. Is this tree tough as years pass? Do I need to cut and reduce the height? I would appreciate your advice.

It actually it can survive temperature over 50 degrees. Mine is about 5ft and is perfect in the full sun in Cali. The young ones cant though.

Correct.... no scent...I plan on going by tree farm in November and grabbing cut off branches and and placing a couple in it's pot for FULL Christmas effect.

They are everywhere in Australia but they are enormous outdoor trees.
hello, help me please, my young araucaria's tip broke! :( what will happen to my poor plant? would it grow a new tip (crown)? Do someone know anything about this??
@Noah Tunnell yeah, as you said, now it has a tiny baby tip at the side of the top and another one is trying to sprout. Still healthy but I guess it will become weirdly unshaped when these tips grow. :/
Oh great. I killed it. Will it grow again if I cut it back to just the main stem and bring it inside now? If you want to help this plant get the word Pine out of its name! Or add the word ‘tropical’ to the name! I moved up from Florida and considered my Norfolk a friend for several years. I figured it was a pine that handles winter not a tropical. Duh. I’m sad. I’m going to get one on the after Christmas sale today.
