    1. Get rid of a translation loop
    2. Become an intensive listener
    3. Learn English by clustering
    What a great advice!

I love to listen English stories. Three years ago, I started to listen the simple English stories which was retold by some authors on UA-cam. I tried to study vocabularies, tried to listen their voices, tried to understand from the stories that I listened to. I wish I could listen English stories like my native language. I found your clip. I changed my mind. I found my way. Now I wish I could speak English fluently. Thank you very much for your clip.

Your words are so true to the mark. I have been telling my students the very same things for many years. Common sense prevails in all things. And yet, why does it elude most second language learners. In life we try another method if we keep failing at achieving something. But in the world of ESL, students repeatedly fail over many years because they continue to study grammar, read books and write diaries without every listening to a single word. P.S. The Cambridge dictionary is one of the best.

There is a lot of wisdom in your talk. I wish I understood it when I was a lot younger. I heard the advice of using an English-to-English dictionary many many years ago, but I ignored it since I didn't understand its benefit until now. I hope young ESL students today can understand your wisdom sooner than later. Thanks.

Hi, Mr Lee. Your recommendations to improve English fluency are amazing. You have given me ideas to re engineer my learning. I have been focusing on listening and repeating with partial success. It seems to me your techniques are more toward awakening brain areas that we don't often use and that are essential to learn as native speakers do. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. You are an excellent teacher!

    To sum up the tricks:
    1. Break translations loop - English learners dictionary (I already do this, not new for me), Unlearned habits
    2. Becoming an active listener:
    - Listening to English convos and understand them and think in English (I do it as well, but not in the way that you described)
-Develop intensive listening skills (I am lacking in this for real), becoming English conversationalist - passion to listen to the others what they say
    3. Clustering:
    - phrasal verbs - verbs and prepositions. Listen a lot to learn phrasal verbs and take note. (A very new technique for me)
-Colocations - a cool breath - a golden opportunity. Idiomatic English. (A new method for me)

I think he does a whole helluva lot better than most. Since his audience is obviously non-English-speaking, I think part of what might be conceived as an "accent" is a deliberate attempt to speak crisply so as to be understood by them. My wife has spent a long time studying English and while she understands most of what she hears, she still cannot speak it. I think this just might be what she needs.

Wow! The first one is very famous and I already had it, but the second one I've never heard about and just in the theory it looks really helpful! The third one I thought that I also followed this technique, but when you said to stop fifteen minutes by fifteen minutes to really understand everything impressed me! I never thought this way haha and it really works. I always had this trouble that I don't understand some word and then I mess up a little what exactly they said and I just understand the context, but not the whole thing. With this method I can really improve. Thanks!!!

    • @moshemaor1731
      @moshemaor1731 6 років тому +1

Me you do not have to convince. I learn now German by Internet lessons.
I decided to learn like babies do. A 3 years old child speaks quite good - without knowing another language, without writing a single letter, and without reading at all.
Nobody told him what means "work", but he knows the meaning, that his father goes to work almost every day.
So, I listen a lot to simple German conversations. sometimes more than once. It helps a lot.
The gentleman in the video is 100% right about guessing unknown words, with the rest of the word in the sentence. THIS IS WHAT LITTLE CHILDREN DO ALL THE TIME.
I agree with the lecturer with all his recommendations. They help me a lot. And I am not so young. Turn to 71.
