This was absolutely fascinating to watch! I’ve taken pottery classes, but never advanced to using a wheel. There were moments when you were throwing this piece and I knew it would be beautiful but I also knew if I was doing this for the first time my thought would be, “I’ve completely messed this up and I need to start over”. It was fun to see all the work you put in and then it suddenly transform into a very cool bowl. Thanks for posting 😊
Hi Lily I have just found your channel and want to thank you for the details you explained that to many other potters on You Tube don’t bother to tell us beginners who are not in an area that has lessons available so have to use You Tube to learn. Instructions such as how you cone up the clay, how your thumbs smooth out the bottom and importantly WHY! They seem to skip a lot of little details that we need. I struggled for weeks to cone up and now after using your method I have ‘got it’! You have a new subscriber and thanks again from New Zealand
Hi again Lily! Do you know of any reference source which gives an idea of how much clay to use for the different type of bowls, mugs etc to start of with e.g if I want to make a 10cm high cylinder shape mug with an 8 cm width finished size how do I know how much clay to start with? By the time it goes through a bisque and glaze firing they shrink so much I am always making them too small or too big! Also could you please show us how to do handles? Thanks Lynne NZ
Can you explain when you should or shouldn't cover your thrown pieces with plastic as they dry? My studio tells us to cover our pieces and it often takes about a week for my pieces to become leather hard. Do I have to wait that long to slow the drying process?
I know you are asking Lily but in case she doesn't see your question.. Whether or not to use plastic is dependent on the temperature, the thickness of the clay, the air flow, and how soon you will be back to work on it. Likely your studio tells you to cover it well because people often do not come back in the next few days. If you plan to return the following day to trim, and it's not too hot out, you could leave them uncovered, or experiment with leaving them partially covered. It's something you will get the hang of from experience. Good luck!

I've seen in a few videos of potters who use a mirror. Why? If the wheel is turning you do see all sides pretty much all the time. Could you explain the reason for using the mirror?
Yep just like Amos said. I find I get a sore back from trying to view the form of the pot by leaning to the side all the time, so the mirror helps to make the form exactly as I want it as my hands are moving. Otherwise there is a lot of stopping and starting. When you’re throwing a pot and you look down you really can only see the inside so it’s hard to know what the outside looks like without the mirror. It’s an incredibly helpful tool
I’m not fully sure - someone once told me early pottery wheels had a rope with a weight attached that you needed to throw away from you to get it to spin. Don’t know how much truth is in that but I quite like it!
Can we have a part 2 with trimming and part 3 with glazing puhlease?

Inside slightly higher, although it does vary from pot to pot and what I’m trying to do.

mirror allows u to see the outside shape from a distance, when youre on the wheel you are too close to be able to get a good view from the side

@@MaeCeramics it was my understanding that the term throwing derives from an old English word "truin" (or however it spelled) that means "to turn".
i hope you can do other things than opening bowls with it too :)) THAT WOULD BE HANDY ;)
