I have been looking for something very simple to make to match my little shoulder wrap. So this will be just what I want. Thank you for this. I am not one to do hats at all, so this is somewhat beginner friendly.

Such a neat and easy way to make a hat besides crocheting in the round! I find I prefer this method. How many chains and rows would I need for a kids sized hat?
Hi! Thank you so much! Your first step is to measure the head you’re making the hat for. You need the circumference. This will be how many rows you need. Then you’ll need to leave out one or two rows because of the stretch that this hat will provide. That takes care of the width. Now you want to measure from the top of the middle of the head down to the eye brows. This will be your indication of how many to chain when you start out. If you want a cuff, add about 15 more chains past the measurement so you can cuff it later. Once you have your measurements taken and the flat piece made to custom size, bring both sides of the hat together and do a whip stitch starting from the bottom and work your way up so that you can weave your top closed with the rest of the yarn strand. This makes for less sewing in. Once you have it sewn up and cinched closed at the top, make the knot, hide the yarn, then turn the hat inside out. This the right side of the work. I hope this helps.

Christy Savage Hi Christy! Thanks for your question!! Well, it’s been a while since I did this video (before I knew what I was doing. LOL) The best way to know if the hat is going to fit is measurement. First, measure the head you are making the hat for. If the circumference is 21-22” around (which is the average size adult crown), you will want to have about 50 rows of this hat. There is quite a bit of stretch with this one and for the size mentioned, this should do nicely. If the head is between 22-24” (larger size, men usually), you will want approx. 52 rows. The hat will stretch with wear too, so be prepared for that as well. To answer your question exactly, the measurement of the rectangle before being folded in half for the hat should be around 17-18” roughly, depending on how loose or tight you crochet. I hope this helps!!

Hi! Normally I just use the trusty 4 worsted weight (I Live This Yarn from Hobby Lobby) and a size H or I hook. Thanks for the question! Happy holidays!
My recommendation is to measure the head in circumference that you are making the hat for. If 40 rows is bigger that you need, only make 38 rows. You can also go down a hook side and be ok, so long as the flat piece across measures about 1” less than the measurement, to hove it room yo stretch. I hope this helps. This particular pattern is very adaptable to any size head you’re making it for. Happy crocheting.
Shysteina Brieze I just sewed it on the top. I don’t have a video for it, but there are other tutorial for sewing on pompoms if needed. I haven’t quite gotten that far. Eventually I will add tutorials for these types of things, unfortunately my schedule is not allowing any videos right now. Try looking up, “how to sew a pompom on a hat” and see what you can find. Thanks for the question and good luck!!😇

Oh goodness, it’s been such a long time since that video was made. I actually just had some left over yarn laying around at that time. Typically, for an adult hat, it takes me a little over 1/2 or a skein of about 300-320 yards.. in grams, I’m not sure right now. I’ll have to look after I get home from work. For now, I would say that if you can grab a brand new skein of yarn, or if you have most of one left over, you would certainly have enough material for this hat. Thanks for the question.
I’m not sure where you are in the world, but I usually shop for my yarn at Hobby Lobby, and use the I Love This Yarn brand. I feel like I used the mainstays yarn from Walmart for this tutorial, though, and I got that yarn at Walmart. Again, starting with a fresh skein of yarn with at least 300 yards would give you plenty to work with. 😀
marie-therese rudell Hi. There are no written patterns for my earlier videos. I have been waiting to do more videos until I get everything reorganized.. those new videos with have instructions on screen while I teach. If you need a written pattern for this, I will watch the video again and write a pattern for you and send it to your email address if you like...

What is the measurement for this hat? I'm using a J hook and if I make 40 rows, it would be a huge hat. Thank you.

Hi I have 100 grams of yarn, is that enough?
Hi there! Yes! That is the size of one skein of yarn.. so go for it!
Iv ended up using 2 yarns for the hat lol
