"Elite schools should no longer be called elite. Just call them expensive." Keep speaking truth to power, Bill.
This whole video is full of strawman arguments. Easy to pick someone's argument apart when you willfully misunderstand it. Hamas are terrorists but so is Benjamin Netanyahu and his illegal seizing of land from innocent Palestinian citizens for "settlements".

The Maher staff who wrote this video's dialogue are stupid. They had this liberal yap about how a number of Republicans went to Yale...MANY YEARS AGO. Yale today is not what Yale was 30 years ago. DUH. And Maher is old enough to know this. But he refuses to know this because he wanted to attack Republicans. What a JERK he is.

As an immigrant from Italy with a 3rd grade education, my father was one of the smartest people I've known. He could build anything, fix anything, got a job in a rubber factory building tires, was promoted to job setter, was offered a supervisory job but hesitated simply because he couldn't write well in English. All this with a 3rd grade education! A college degree doesn't make one smarter, it just makes them officially smart.
Educated doesn't mean intelligent. You're born either smart or not. Genetics seems to play a sizable role, from my own observations.

Intellect is great, but it's also very important to use whatever intellect you have to learn. It doesn't matter how "smart" you are. If you don't learn anything valuable. How are you going to function.
The real problem with America and places like it, isn't that people aren't smart. I mean that is a factor too, but a bigger problem is this. Forget Higher education. Education in general is pitiful here in the states. Getting an advanced education will help you not to get taken advantage of. I'll tell you one thing though. Thank Christ for the internet. I personally have learned so much just constantly reading and looking up things, and even just sitting back and watching videos.
Lastly, Just as important as Bill Maher here is actively trying to mislead people into not getting a higher education, and yes your going to learn bullshit that isn't true, but you're also going to learn valuable skills on various other subjects. For example: Things like math, calculus, algebra, English, and so many other things aren't as up for debate as history, and I agree that we need to keep history as factual as we can.
I just think saying "No" to collage isn't the smartest way to go about it.
Also when it comes to false information. There are so many ways to fact check now days ya know?

@@jeffreymcquillen1208 I majored in Environmental Science and at this point I think there are three serious conversations that need to happen regarding school/college in America.
1. The student debt that's out there has to be forgiven for most students. I can't even afford to even live on my own, even if I had a job in the field that math wouldn't change on that.
2. We need to look at why our high school system has fallen apart. I feel like a lot of high school's problems have been offshored to colleges. My gut tells me that a huge part of the problem is the sheer number of Americans living in poverty or experiencing financial hardship. I think shortening high school to three years, while at the same time making community college free is one solution.
3. If a job is going to require a college degree, the minimum wage said can pay is $25 an hour, full time time 32+ hours a week. Community College should be free for everyone, as they offer the first two years of a BS.

I spent six years at three universities and from the look of things my generation was the last to be graduated with an education not a mental illness.
Man Bill, thank you so much! I see demonstrations of ignorant students shouting from the river to the sea and I guarantee you they can't find any of them on a map (Mediterranean Sea, Jordan River BTW). I have also been in Israel all my life and no one claims that it is a perfect country, far from it, but I studied at the university with Arab friends and voted with them on the same ballot, my child's kindergarten teacher is an Arab woman and my colleagues at work. Since the establishment of the state there have been Arab members of parliament and in the previous government an Arab party was in the government. It just doesn't happen in apartheid. This only happens in a democracy. Ignorance and lies are a real problem, they just feel they are supposed to shout their nonsense without realizing that it really affects other people's lives.
It's interesting here at UCSB. The pro-Palestinian crowd scheduled what they thought was going to be an all-campus walkout of class this week. Out of 25K -30K students only 200 participated so I think that this is really overblown in terms of what the participation really is on these campuses. I don't think it's not some big number.

It's not about arab Israeli. It's about Palestinians, living in the West Bank. They can be murdered at will by the settlers, they can be arrested or killed at will by the army, spend months and years in prison without process. They can be dispossessed of their home on a whim if the settlers wants to steal it. They can't use the roads reserved to the settlers, they can be shot while working in their fields or travelling from their homes. And that happens every single day. That's apartheid and ethnic cleansing at the same time.
Of course, Maher never speak about them, as he has been dehumanizing Palestinians since forever, content to spread racism and untruth about their plight at every opportunity.
Exactly what they said about Americans who wanted civil rights and an end to segregation. A life long Bill Maher fan, but he is completely wrong, there are extremists anywhere but college makes one an informed voter, open to ideas, and a critical thinker and someone with a sense of history and the mistakes made over centuries.

I would swap "don't go to college" with "don't go to an expensive college". So many jobs require a Bachelor's at minimum, but they don't really care where you went or what you majored in. They're usually much more interested in your work experience.
I would swap it with “only go to college for certain things and only at certain places”. College has become broad and only 15% of degree have real career paths and use.
Exactly. I have two IT degrees... perhaps 5% of what I learned applied to actual jobs I held over the last 30 years. Most college is nothing more than a business to make money and employ staff (like all other businesses).
Every graduating high school student should get a free 2 year enrollment into their choice of a community training school that teaches trades. If nothing else, to learn basic skills so people can fix things around their house. LOL
people go to expensive colleges, preferably Ivy league, for the networking and the reputation you can then show off in your job applications. obviously if all you do is go to college, no extra curricular activities that compound to your future job interests AND the degree itself isnt much of a qualification for a specific job, then you are in a bad spot. Especially if you have a lot of debt thanks to tuitions.
Thank you! I'm getting sick of all this rhetoric of shitting on people for going to college. As a first-gen college student, I went bc I had a career in mind and I knew I needed a degree to do it, and LEARN about it. I never learned what I needed to learn for my career in high school, hell, you don't learn much of anything in high school, unless you go to a career-tech one. The difference is, I went to a state college that was cheap and close to home, and a fraction of the cost of some dumb elite university. Same education, and still learned the skills I needed, NOT something you can just teach yourself from an Internet search, which many people seem to think you can do to become an expert in something
I agree but I’m sorry. I’m tired of college educated ppl telling others not to go to college. How is that any different than what they claim colleges are doing to students? They’re literally telling you what to think also. I’m personally big on education and I think it very important for those who want it. Definitely don’t need to go to an expensive college unless you have a full ride scholarship. Definitely go to community college first then a university if it’s cheaper. Not everyone has to go to college but telling kids that they shouldn’t is irresponsible especially when you can just teach them to be steadfast in their beliefs.

I taught a masters level ethics class before I left academia, and students would approach me privately to share their peer-unapproved thoughts. Students know they will be shunned, and their peers can affect their longterm career prospects. The incentives aren't there for honest, open discussion.
But the problem goes all the way up to the tenured faculty having a hive mind and looking for reasons to reject tenure proposals from professors who don't fit in. And it starts early when new professors are still at the tenure-track level, where hiring decisions are decided primarily by faculty vote, further leading to the homogenization of 'academics.'
Lecturers and teaching professors are barely even acknowledged as existing and serve only to pick up the work loads of the tenured and tenure-track faculty. As they are particularly dependent on student evaluations of their teaching, rocking the boat is an even greater risk.
So however bad it is now, it's only getting worse.

This was not a comprehensive list of everything I taught in that course nor of my efforts to stir open discourse--merely a bit of insight from someone who has been in a position to which few are privy.
You can use it to learn and grow or you can do as intractable small minds are apt to do: pretend you are in a position to wag your finger at someone for their supposed failure when you clearly lack the intellect for basic reading comprehension.

My company president once said “there are 30% of us in this company that went to college and we can’t sell anything, fix anything, build anything and we don’t know our products intimately enough to help with the supply chain or negotiate delivery and prices.” He later went on to say “when we need to cut costs our first thoughts are cut employees at the bottom, charge employees more for their portion of healthcare and take away overtime, it’s never been the people with college degrees that have kept this company going.”
When I went to college in the 80s, it was actually affordable. You got value out of the degree because you were not in debt for years afterwards. I could see possibly attending for a highly specialized field, such as medicine, engineering or law, but outside of those professions, the cost benefit is no longer a wise decision. Stanford, as an example is about $80k per year if you live on campus and eat in the cafeteria. Even state schools are $15k and up. My daughter, when asked about college, did not see going for the cost involved, which made a lot of sense to me. She is preparing for a career in a very affordable profession that is usable in the real world.
That's awesome. Plenty of super high earners don't have degrees. I know tons of union skilled tradesmen. All making $150,000-ish a year. Now I'm sure someone will comment how that's not much. Uh huh. Almost no one in this country makes that much. 5%? 7%? If that.
Highest earners i know went to trade school for 2 years and started early working there way up in the buisness. By 30 they were pretty well set in life.

@@trailertrish2587 don't forget the colleges themselves offering no-value degrees as well just to get kids to sign on for something that sounds cool but is totally worthless in the real world- like gender studies, art history or liberal arts degrees. Those degrees are only good for getting low paying teaching jobs in those fields.
Then you have the fact that some places have black listed certain colleges from their applications. They know if they hire someone who got their degree from College X, they'll need to spend more time training that person to do the job they are supposed to know how to do right out of school than they would from College Y or a trade school.
Heck one can argue or question the value of going to college for medicine, engineering, or law. You have to take a bunch of extra gen ed courses and other questionable classes that cost a bunch of money and like you wrote you have to pay for the on campus housing and meal plans.
Heck even if you go for those things you mentioned you'll still probably have to end up learning a bunch of different things on the job site or in the work force that the school didn't prepare you for.
I know someone who went to school for respiratory therapy and there was a bunch of extra stuff they had to learn up learning and adapting to working at the hospital that the college either didn't prepare them for they didn't focus on it enough.

The world envisioned in Fahrenheit 451 is happening right now. It is much earlier than what I expected
I got a BA back in the 80s and that was friggin hard. I actually had to study and work my butt off to get that degree. Sleepless nights, fingers worn raw from taking notes (see kids, there used to be these things called 'pen and paper' and they were essential to college life). People flunked out all of the time, and the attitude in the college was 'don't want to work? don't let the door hit you in the ass'.
I went back for my Masters in 2015 and I couldn't believe how it had changed. Nobody worked, no professor challenged anyone's ideas or introduced ideas that weren't 'coddled child friendly'. People in grad school who didn't know the difference between their, there and they're. Teachers who didn't care that they didn't know, and never marked off for basic mistakes these students should have learned in 7th grade. It was nothing but a diploma mill. None of those kids were learning anything. It was really quite sad.
I graduated in 1987. I thought to take a few years off and work, then get my MBA at night. Then I saw the quality if students colleges were turning out just a few years later. I supervised graduates that couldn't solve simple business problems, but were getting straight A's in graduate school. Decided it wasn't worth going back for an advanced degree.
I got my masters in 2012. I never really used it. I am still not sure today if going to college was worth it at all for me.

I’m a retired RN and my training was essential to caring for patients but in 1983 started out $8.65/hr and would be maxed out at $17. But at Christmas we were given $600 bonus (LPN $300). Then INTEGRIS bought out the hospital and it was a nightmare going to corporate greed control. Christmas bonuses then went to a $25 gift certificate to the hospital gift shop where a candy bar was doubled the price at the grocery store. They picked on & tried to fire the experienced nurses to avoid them being there 10 years to qualify for pension. They stopped rolling over time off into the “bank” for use at a later date but would refuse time off saying we were a specialty unit and couldn’t be filled with agency nurses. They teamed with OK Unemployment to refuse benefits. Corporate hand in hand with political corruption. At our orientation at the buyout the woman demanded no tolerance for missed days of work. At the end when she asked if any questions an employee asked what about calling in if we’d died. He was grinning and she puffed up, turned red face and hatefully said “Then you BETTER have someone call in for you!” All of us looked shocked at each other, sadly hit with the stark reality that this brand of healthcare was NOT a good thing. Needless to say I worked sick many days.

In German we say: Handicraft has golden soil. My recommendation to all young people in the world. Learn a craft, then you can always go on to a second education in another field. If that doesn't work out, you always have a reassurance in your first education. Craftsmen like carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc. are always needed.
Yeah but college is Germany is free. It’s harder to go to school later in life because the costs are prohibitive. In American society at least.

I needed my master's degree (from a private college) to practice in my field. But every time I hire a plumber, roofer or electrician, they all are earning way more per hour than I am.
That's because these colleges focus way too much on theory and abstract crap rather than real applications. I mean...my own opinion is this. Most college students are just lazy, and college administrators know it. Students would rather get an easy degree in philosophy or psychology or something like that, rather than study something really hard like biology or chemistry or physics, or some other area of study where a real brain is required and you have to study like 12 hours a day just to pass! It's really shameful what's going on in these schools. The teachers suck. They are very lazy. They teach stuff that students won't use in the real world. Most math majors for example should be able to pass the first two or three actuarial examinations after getting their math degree, but that's usually not the case! Why not? Because colleges don't care! They don't prepare math students for the actuarial examinations BUT THEY SHOULD. Most computer science majors know the merge sort algorithm really well, but can't figure out how to design a website from scratch! That is just shameful! And these days if you go to a college you're going to drown in all the DIE crap. (Diversity, Inclusion and Equity)
If you dare to speak out against it, you'll probably get censored and have to leave the college. It's a damn joke. It really is. And in the long run it's going to send a lot of potential students away. They will either join the military or go to a trade school or something like that, but I predict that if things don't change, then we're going to see colleges and universities in America with RECORD LOW STUDENT ENROLLMENTS within the next couple of decades. It's going to get bad, and I predict that eventually some of the smaller colleges and universities will just close their doors and fold. And that's because they really don't care about learning and teaching. All they care about is sucking money from the students so that the administrators can get their six-figure salaries. Totally shameful that this is going on in what is supposedly the greatest country in the world.

The necessary education for a plumber or electrician is surely much higher than nearly all degree requirement jobs… They just learn on the job. You should switch careers, it’ll only take 15 to 20 years for you to become a master electrician… That’s if you study hard…

A lot of people do not use the degree they earned, but the degree itself is kind of a pass the gate keepers like to see.
Literally heard a masters student say they were surprised we learned about Freud and his theories based on how exclusionary they were for the queer community and people of color. This is in a social work class where understanding psychodynamic approaches is important and it’s helpful to learn about a pivotal figures in their development. Just because you don’t agree with someone’s opinions - especially a historical figure - or how they conducted themselves personally does not mean their work should be negated or that their entire character was this way. (For the most part. As always there are exceptions to the rule.) and, in any case, we shouldn’t ban topics or people to learn about. Knowing history is important so it’s not repeated or, selfishly, so you’re not horribly uniformed/misinformed.
While you may disagree with a historical figures beliefs or ideas, it is always important to learn about them so you don’t repeat them, something that is somehow being forgotten in younger generations.

The advice here should be don't overpay for your education, because just graduating from a decent school is good enough to open up opportunities. The rest of your success is up to how well you work in the real world.

It's not just the education - you can educate yourself if you're motivated. It's the connections. Those are invaluable.
That's outdated advice. Only go if you are getting a degree in an in demand field. Also don't overpay as you said.

I’m a small business owner…it’s a technical service we provide….I will not be hiring any “university” students as they will most certainly not mesh with the culture I’ve started…I will be hiring trade’s people with some technical background and will train them myself to ensure they can do the job….I can teach people stuff…but if you have a mind virus…I have no cure.
A community college can give you the same education for thousands of dollars per year less. Community colleges are the way to go.
The best education I got was at my local community college. I went to a major university after that, and the quality of education was abysmal. Professors didn't give two craps about undergrads, and besides my calculus classes, everything was really easy.

That is your personal experience and others will disagree with you. But at your local community college you have a much smaller population of students so teachers have more time for students. At the major university where you have population sizes up to 10 times more you have to understand the teachers do not have the same time to give each student.
My experience was just the opposite. Community college was anonymous but cheap which was so important to me. Transfer to a university was shocking. I went on academic probation, had to learn to study for the first time, had to repeat some courses I had taken at the previous school and the ones they did accept did not really prepare me for the next ones in sequence at the new school requiring lots of time learning what I should have known when I transferred. Community college was just a continuation of high school for me.

My brother runs a large company. He literally does not hire college grads with exception of the ones which require specific skills, such as the accountants. He’s told me the employees who do not have college degrees seem to be sharper and better employees. His belief is that those without college degrees feel the need to prove themselves. Those with college degrees don’t feel as compelled to have to prove themselves and so often do not, particularly those from the “Ivy League” schools. He prefers hires from state colleges and junior colleges.
If I was hiring custodians, I wouldn't want degrees either.

The simple math tells you that if you have a degree, a bonafide 4-year degree from an accredited univ., you will earn much more than those that don't. Maher has been harping on the worthlessness of degrees for decades now...and it's true many degrees appear to offer nothing for the money. I don't believe that is completely true, even with art degrees or poli sci degrees etc...there are many benefits to finishing what you start. And that's part of what a degree proves. You are incredibly unlikely to end up asking people 'paper or plastic' with a college degree, it basically sets a floor, and during those years you might find that something else is in you, some hidden or latent talent. I do not know of an unsuccessful college graduate...a truly worthless soul that is lost with one. I do know many of my old HS friends, that are living through hell, and yes, some that didn't graduate from anything that are living a good life, and one is a millionaire. That's not a recipe for success, it's luck.

A key part of going to a competitive school is/was meeting people of different backgrounds and debating ideas, hearing different view points, arguing (civilly) with people, etc. etc. If people are afraid of stating their opinions, then really what's the point of going to college? It's sad to think there's less free speech in colleges now than 20 years ago. Political correctness and cancel culture is also part of the problem, we need to get over it. And yeah, don't let the students run the schools.
I even see this with my brother and his wife. They're nice, very smart young people but are immovable when it comes to some issues and won't even engage no matter how calmly and rationally we try to explain our points of view. They just chalk up different opinions that I and my mom have to the fact that we're older and not so enlightened. It drives me a bit nuts.
Odd, I didn't learn anything from the other students through debate, but rather in the classroom from my professor and through self study. Seems like the people that think they know the most about the college experience, show they never even went. You start by saying the students should be "debating", unless you think you should be debating the professor on the subject matter, and then say "And yeah, don't let the students run the schools". You clearly have cognitive dissonance issues here.

I took a PhD-class in French history at Texas Tech - admittedly one the lowest ranked universities in the country, but nevertheless. At the end of the class, the girl next to me, when asked to find Bretagne on the map - was trying to find it in Spain.

My daughter is in nursing school. Four years at community college plus 1 year at a state college for a bachelor’s, all while working as a CNA in a nursing home to get some experience in the ground. She’ll be obscenely employable with virtually no debt. And she’s as well read and articulate as any liberal arts grad with a six figure debt they expect us to pay for.
Here’s a thought. Don’t forgive college debt. Pay kids to go to nursing and trade schools.

I did the basic education only decided to learn the cooking trade with a 3-year apprenticeship and attached Hotel school. Worked in 20 different countries and learned about different cultures, adaptation, flexibility and respect for each country and always behaved like a Guest! Now I'm close to 75 years and my home is in Bali. I had many amazing experiences on my journey and never regretted my decision (which I made at a very young age)in regard to the profession I chose! It seems most young people missing guts and want to play safe!

It is easy for Bill Maher to tell kids not to go to college. He is one of the most privileged people in this country. But for those kids less privileged a college education is a way out of poverty. They don’t have to go to the most expensive school to get a college degree. Plenty of good state and city schools.
My life would not have been as good without a college education. I went to a community college first, very excellent instruction, and then to a state college, also excellent. The best thing to get out of college, besides the degree which opens many many doors, is the ability to become a Critical Thinker and to learn how to learn anything. It also allows you to live in a community and engage with other students and teachers...helps you to grow as a person. I would recommend to anyone to get some kind of college education, community colleges are great and you can transfer your credits to a state college and finish your degree at a reasonably low cost...it is well worth it... by the way , I studied Engineering, so I have a high regard to those that can think analytically and solve problems...and have a high regard for the Scientific Method of evaluating evidence and observations.

I went to college. I took computer science. Not much social justice in math. I do okay. There are things we need college educated people to do, like engineers and doctors. Could probably do with fewer lawyers though.

So many jobs that used to accept practical on the job experience as qualification now accept only degrees. It was part of a supposedly meritocratic moment. As many of us know, some of the looniest and most incompetent people have advanced degrees and the most comeptent rational people don’t always. It would be nice if quality work were held as estimable as degrees in college.

What would it be like with no poets, no writers, no artists, no musicians, no philosophers, no historians? What about people who have absolutely no interest in computer programming or business? Are we all useless people? My husband and I are classical musicians, our children are as well. We make half as much, maybe even a quarter as much as my brother and sister, both with their own businesses. But we have a nice life, when you have less, you need less. We make other people happy with our music...children, the elderly, the disabled. I love teaching children about beauty, the beauty in a melody that feeds your soul.. It’s really sad how our most prestigious institutions have collapsed due to bad ideas and cowardice. It used to be impressive to meet someone who attends or graduated an Ivy League school. Now it’s a joke. They need someone to step in with courage to end this nonsense before it’s too late.
It's not going to happen when your country is so divided. You have a large maga demographic along with a small woke demographic with a big voice.

I saw this already in the mid 80s as a student. Students don't read petitions. they only analyze superficially what the clipboard holder is saying.
Of course you should to college; you have to be a leader of your peers to turn things around. I've telling this to my kids since high school.

Part of Education is your dialogue with your fellow students & learning from their experiences in the world & that includes the professor, that's how you learn. Negotiating differences & learning to discuss them in a respectful way, is a vital tool.
It just seems that Education has become rote memorization & there is nothing communal about it & no one to be responsible to. The more you are around only yourself, the more you become self-absorbed, a very large problem with the contemporary student who seems very willing to defend the innocent but just as seamlessly will cancel & ruin lives without even really understanding the issue.
Thank you. I’m an old Jewish woman with most of my family in Israel. My grandparents are buried in kfar Blum next to the Jordan. My aunt and uncle established the kibbutz. Their children and their children’s children have worked and studied and played alongside of the Arab people since the 1940’s. I am heartbroken
If Israelis want to redraw geographic lines to 3000 years ago, then Iran now owns Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and parts of Europe. LOL
For me College was very useful. I was able to work overseas and see other parts of the World. It gave me the tools to have a greater understanding of history and the cultures of other countries as well as our own country.
It was useful for me as well. But I went to the cheapest school I could find and graduated without debt over 30 years ago. His second piece of advice--don't pay a lot--may/or may not be more applicable. I know a lot of guys with high paying tech degrees who didn't go to college. But some interesting career paths require it.
That was then, hun. This is now. I have a kid going to a university. I know a lot of kids going to that same university. Dumb children. All of them. The only difference between them and 7 year olds is size. None of them will be ready for the real world until they're in their 30s. Go live in another country? These kids are scared to get their drivers licenses. Who if left to their own devices, would sit in their bedroom, at their parents house, watching tik toks until they died. Going to a daycare for four years won't fix it.
Why would you need college to travel and work overseas, or give you a greater understanding of history? Anyone can do that.
@@Rick-C-117 depending on what you're doing abroad--teaching English for instance--a college degree might be a requirement.

First 2/3 of Maher's monologue was accurate, the rest claptrap to his leftard base. It is encouraging, though, to see him slowly maturing.
I don’t always agree with Bill Maher but I do respect that he has given thought in forming his positions. He has the guts to invite people with differing opinions onto his shows and encourages dialectic over debate. His guests are interesting and renowned in their field, are successful, and most have earned themselves a degree of fame.
I strongly suspect that the majority of his guests hold college/university degrees (Maher has at least one, too) so I have to question whether the discouragement of pursuing a college education is sage advice. Perhaps Maher should launch a show where none of his guests are college/university graduates.
I love Bill because he savages the fringes of both sides
