What is stunning about this historical footage is that it's actually the master take version of the audio that ended up on the album..., what a prescient, forward thinking attitude of theirs in documenting these sessions, many bands would have been uncomfortable w/ the mere suggestion of having their recording sessions video taped, yet, STP embraced it. Thank you.
STP was always much more harmonically interesting than Pearl Jam, and as such an overall much more interesting band IMO...save perhaps for PJ's debut 'Ten', IMO their best album.
I agree. STP stands out harmonically from other bands of the era. They fully embraced that Zeppelin thing of lots of different styles. That Bbmaj7#11add13 that starts Vasoline always caught my ear.
@@jgmiller804 DeLeo's ability to slip in some incredibly complex chords and progressions only known to Jazz players was absolutely amazing. When I started learning Jazz guitar as a teen in the 90s, my mind was blown when I realized what he was doing. Some of the tracks on Tiny Music made it clear that none of it was accidental. He wasn't just playing around until something "sounded cool".
Stp, non studio, always feels so personal and emotional. Man, literally every single time, it literally lives in your chest and pulls at your heart. Can't convey this feeling through words. Miss this era. Miss what the world looked like and felt like at this time. Miss Scott. Saw him the day before he died. If i had only known, i wouldve tried harder to hug him.. I only wonder if he had an intention to meet his lord. I hope he did. God have mercy on us all
This is a soundtrack for existential self exploration. Penny is a part of each of us. Searching for meaning, personal identity and love in an inconceivably huge universe of possibility and faulty subconscious programming.
Perhaps, but I think it's because the chorus has harmonies and such, so they did it in the studio, after this "full take", where they also added the chimes and stuff to the song as well. Recording like this is interesting, really captures the atmosphere though.
Wow, this is really cool! Thanks! I've always wanted to see STP in the studio, especially doing a song like this one. I also just noticed that after playing this video and the original song on the album, this take might be the take on the album, which makes this more interesting! Thank you so much for this! :)
I thought the same thing. This take was so perfect. They were so perfect. Just what they created in a living room smoking cigarettes, and literally jamming. And then they pan in on Paul. I got chills.
This album and song specifically got me through some times. I named my daughter Penny in a way after the song but in a way after the era. Thank you for sharing!
No this is the very take that appears on Purple, minus the Chorus vocals etc.... that were overdubbed later. But everything in this video is what went to the album.
Man that voice is one a kind
Rest in Peace Sir....thanks for the awesome tunes.......Unforgettable
I always loved STP especially with this singer… I would be driving my car and one of their songs came on the radio and I was in Bliss
Have seen them 3 times
I wish I could like this video a thousand times.

Ya they are 99 percent there it's beautiful footage to see them at that exact moment of being tight and ready to cut the track
AGREED 👍 EXACTLY 💯 PERCENT PERFECT 🥰 THANKS LORETTA ✔️

They take some cues from Zeppelin and Post-Help Beatles while keeping it incredibly fresh.
Definitely u hit the nail on the head sir

Magic in that room.
You just can't get much more organic with the natural feel of the music than this. Great music came out of this combination of talent and drive.
One of the best bands from the 90s
Awesome. Reminds me of my youth and how good these guys were. Epic
That's what I call ear candy...I never want the Purple album to end.
Unbelievable playing, try this at home, bloody hard, such perfection, that timing is impecable
holy shit, this is amazing!

Waw... I feel a shiver!!! Thanks for uploading!!! Those 4 guys are 90's legends!!! Simple as that...
My favorite song and favorite album by STP. Great band.
This is fucking perfect....
RIP SCOTT... 😪
Scott smoking a cig the whole time..authentic!
So good, wish there was more STP footage like this. ❤

youknowwhat500 Yeah this performance is definitely the basic track from Purple!!!

This is definitely the take on the album

Epic footage! The band number one!
Phenomenal playing and timing. This is very hard to do
when I hear STP coming up anywhere or being mentioned in conversations, it still makes my day, it's an instant mood boost... STP forever
With the chorus vocals not being there, I just realized how hard it is to sing in 9/4.
this is amazing
How often does anything get made for release in someones living room anymore? Unbelievable times those were.
Tame Impala?
I know Brad Nowell did it. Gwen Stefani sang on it, without permission from her people.
Simply amazing! Such a great band. Purple is a masterpiece, very underrated album.
@3:43--3:47
The genuine facial expression of a satisfied musician.
I didn't know they recorded this live, then must've done the chorus vocals after. So cool, Scott has such an amazing voice😢
so good!!
Un tesoro, preciosa voz de Scott. So beautiful voice. Thanks.
Excellent. Thanks for the posting.

first time watching this video..great song!!..
Wow...THANK YOU
I want full take number 4!
I loved the 90s
awesome!
This is how you turn the spark from Led Zeppelin into flame
Many thanks for sharing this!!
This is dope!
We miss you Scott.
Scotty mi amor :(
Love Pretty Penny👍
Wow, that sounds like the take from the LP, eh?
Fakename70 That's the one from the LP.
Then Scott had to stop smoking for the chorus take afterwards.
Scott never stopped smoking.
How would it be if STP in their prime showed up in your living room to jam ... this is how it would be. awesome.
Yes yous are amazing
Acoustic master.
awesome
¡Qué belleza! Amo Stone Temple Pilots ♥_♥
RIP Penny to bad I never got to know u sis.
I like this one
Plush is an amazing rock song
90s living room with God's in it.
Anyone know what type of preamps the guitars were recorded with?
Fuck yeah DeLeos!!!!!
@crimsonknuckles its a early demo before they actually recorded it
No this is the very take that appears on Purple, minus the Chorus vocals etc.... that were overdubbed later. But everything in this video is what went to the album.
this is niceness
Oldy but a goody
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
How far will you go I say.
Just to figure out the book in front of your hand now???
Scott
I love you, LoungeFly23. You know how to appease the STP fan that I am.
Dean DeLeo and Eric Kretz make this band. Fantastic.
Any info or data about the house? Location etc .....
I didn't know they recorded it all together. Thought each instrument was recorded separately
💘
Kretz killed it
They're definitely not in standard tuning. That last chord is an E major, but they're fingering what looks like a G.
fecking genius.
No bass in this song?
no
2018
me quedé impresionado :O
This song is about My First Wife Ashera and Our daughter Grace...what Ashera did....and what happened to My Grace 😤
anyone knows the tunning?
Luiz Braz standard tuning.
Wtf. Why isn't Welland in conversation
Oops.
last chord is D---0
G---0
B---2
E---3
I count this in triple meter.
no usaron metronomo para ese tema? que grosos.
@tretadapeste the tuning is normal. they really dont use alternate tunings much.
Sounds great...but why must be before they added the chorus...."gone, pretty penny was her name...etc..."
It's because he sang the chorus tracks on different tracks, so they could be panned differently from the verse vocals.
@tretadapeste standard
Fuck. We lost a big one. So few left and doubtful there will ever be too many more. Rock. Is. Dead.
Rock will never be dead if you just believe. thehushlistband.bandcamp.com
