Elvis was the best-selling musician that ever lived for a reason. He was a very passionate human being that loved everyone and was brave enough to affect change among people. Muhammad Ali and Elvis Presley were very close. Elvis changed everything.

After a major bidding war by many singers for In The Ghetto, written by country singer/writer, Mac Davis, Elvis was the highest bidder. So, Elvis is the original singer to In The Ghetto. But credit goes to its song writer, Mac Davis. This song was released in 1969 by Elvis. It was meant to make us aware of the millions of Americans that had to live in the ghettos of the US at the time. Ironically, as viewers comment now, this song definitely STILL applies in our country today. We have been unable to address our country's ghetto problems.

Mac initially asked Sammy Davis Jr to sing it but he said he didn’t feel right singing because he didn’t grow up poor in the ghetto. His family were traveling entertainers. Sammy recommended Elvis because he did grow up poor in the ghetto.

@@tiffanypalmer9918 Yep, that's what happened. There wasn't a bidding war, not even remotely. Sammy Davis jr. Didn't want to do it for that reason and there were also reasons related to it was just risky to talk about those things at that time. But Mac Davis really wanted a black performer to do it. So that's why I think it's really cool that Sammy Davis Junior said, give it to Elvis man, he'll be perfect for it

    • @NicholasRamos
      @NicholasRamos 11 місяців тому +2

@Tiffany Palmer Sammy was spot on. This song had to be sung by a person who grew up in a ghetto. I am not surprised Sammy recommended Elvis cause I see many photos of Elvis & him together & seen Sammy always complimenting Elvis. They appeared to be good friends & have mutual admiration for each other. Sammy's recommendation may have been the deciding factor for Mac, along with Elvis' monetary bid.

the truth is it was offered to Sammi first. Sammi refused it sighting, wtf is a white guy doing giving a black man song to sing about the ghetto. wtf does a white guy know 1. what it is like to be black and 2 wtf does a white guy know what it is like to be black and live in the ghetto? he then said, give it to that white boy Elvis. If that white boy Elvis didn't sing it it was going to be offered to another black artist Rosay Greir, and that folks is what Elvis fans either don't know about, or refuse to accept the truth.

This song really seems like a classic tune to me. I feel like many artists could record renditions of it, and it would be worth their time to. But just the same, I’m not sure anyone could ever measure up to Elvis singing it here.

Elvis Presley and the SWEET INSPIRATIONS, his black female gospel group, did A LOT to pierce the wall of racism in the 1960s & 1970s. Their whole relationship was inspirational.

This song really pulls at the heartstrings for me, especially the narrative surrounding the mama and her little boy and the futile hopelessness of their situation. Elvis grew up in poverty. He attended black churches.
Mac Davis wrote the song. His inspiration came from a friend of his that grew up poor.
Elvis didn’t care that his manager didn’t want him to record the song. The manager said it would ruin his career.
Elvis said I am recording it anyway.
Btw Elvis would not perform in venues that excluded blacks from attending.
Elvis also had black back up singers including Whitney Houston’s mother at one point.(not on this song)
If his back up singers were not welcome then he did not perform there.

I always love your comments interactions. Everything from the social economic level to the music in the back up singing and all that. And those ladies could really sing. I've also not only watched a bunch of performances from this era with them as part of the band, but I've also watched a number of informal behind-the-scenes just rehearsals. Add a nose, you can get a much better bead on everything, and not only that there are a couple of them that I watched wherever they take a break or something or even and just in the middle of working on arranging something, some of them will be really really serious at one point and then really really funny and provocative after that. And really everybody was that way. They worked really hard but they also had fun. And there's one that's got this really interesting stretch where they're taking a break and they're waiting on somebody else to get back from going to do something, and he goes over and kneels down and just talk to the women background singers, and it's fascinating. They're just really chill and exchanging lots of information and gossip but then they get into some funny stuff and they're laughing and they all look so stylish because no one is dressed up for this really. If anybody is Elvis's but nothing like you would see on stage it's really pulled back and just looks comfortable. But on the other hand they always were sporting the latest hairstyles and just the latest looks and they were all totally different in their personalities and it was just wonderful.

I think you'll like Elvis "If I Can Dream" from the '68 Come Back Special. It has to do with Martin Luther King, Jr. who got assassinated not long before the performance. I read the reason he only performed it twice is because the song would wipe him out emotionally.

Hey, your a good singer. This song is a Mac Davis original but Elvis obviously embraced it and made it a point to perform it. He was moved by hardship and struggle cause his childhood was very poor in a mixed race area in Mississippi. So yes he could relate to the words and he put his soul into the delivery.

@MrsPenPal (EDIT) This is written by Mac Davies, who died in September 2020. It was originally called "In The Ghetto" (The Vicious Circle), but when Elvis got his sheet with the words in his hand, RCA had been allowed to remove the undertitle, and it became just "In The Ghetto", and it was a big hit. And STILL a song of today... It is still such as this in the ghetto in the USA to day... Nothing has getting better since this came almost 55 years ago...

When Elvis got back to Vegas he hand picked the band, the orchestra and the male and female backing groups. He knew the sound he wanted. He arranged a lot of the songs, too. Just watch the rehearsal videos & see how he tries out changes. He was one of a kind.

Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston was one of Elvis’ background singers the Sweet Inspirations. In 1972 Elvis was booked to play the Houston Astrodome. The day of the concert Astrodome management told Elvis he couldn’t bring his black singers with him. Elvis said they come with me or I don’t come. Then he put them on the back of a convertible Cadillac and drove them around the inside of the stadium before he began his concert.

I like all your reactions. I believe it is an original of his and it is both a personal message for himself and others. He grew up poor. Practically the greatest rags to riches story in history because later on he became a multi-multi-multi-multi millionaire. Oh by the way he is STILL a multi-multi-multi-multi millionaire today. He earns about 40 million dollars a year still selling records and gifts from the Graceland estate. You need to see how many employees he pays at the Graceland Estate. I know I went to tour Graceland in 2019. There are younger people working there as well as older. Probably 50-60 running Graceland!!!!! WOW!!! A remarkable story.

An additional interesting bit of trivia about In The Ghetto, was mentioned by its writer, country singer/songwriter, Mac Davis. Davis commented he had ONLY ONE regret after he heard Elvis' completed version to the song. Davis said he would have liked Elvis NOT to have "stretched out" the word GHETTO in the song. Elvis sang it " In the ghet-TOE," making it sound like almost two seperate words. Davis wished Elvis sang it the way he wrote it, singing "ghetto" in a single, more fluid, & common way. But we all know Elvis, he had his own style of singing it in a more unique way, "ghet-TOE". Ironically, Davis said this one regret he had about how Elvis stretched out the word "ghetto" was immediately remedied when Mac received Elvis' 1st royalty check from the Colonel. In The Ghetto (1969) was so humongous & popular the 1st royalty check was for over $10,000 (approx $90,000 today). Davis said he used the check to buy himself a brand new red, Mercedes sports car. More than happy with the size of his 1st royalty check from Elvis, Davis didn't regret "ghet-TOE" as much anymore 🙂. Personally, I think Elvis' "ghet-TOE" decision gave it a more, ICONIC & POWERFUL SOUND.

NOONE was talking about THE CYCLE in the late 60s / early 70s. Sammy Davis Jr famously asked the songwriter Mac Davis to contact Elvis because he felt Elvis can do the song justice. Elvis grew up in the Great Depression AND in Segregation, BUT played and prayed with black children, and treated black elders (parents/grandparents) with the dignity and respect they did not expect from a white person in that era. Elvis grew up dirt poor. NO electricity NO running water in his tiny shack/home. His twin brother died at birth and was buried in a SHOEBOX because that was all the family could afford.
