Elvis grew up in a Tupelo, Mississippi ghetto; Dad, Vern, was in jail for bad checks. At age 14, they moved to the Memphis, Tennessee projects. He sang in a black church...Gospel was his first love...he sang "That's All Right, Mama" in 1954, when a teenager for his Mother's birthday, at Sun Records. He was a Spec 4 in the Army, got out in 2 years. Released "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956 to a massive amount of controversy from religious groups because of his movements. He made a string of musical romance movies, that he didn't want to do. Finally got a decent script for "King Creole", his only b&w movie. He just wanted to make music. His singing career took a dip when his wife left him, and the Beatles arrived, his "Comeback Tour" helped immensely. When he sang "In the Ghetto", which his manager thought would kill his career, he fought to sing it, (it was written by Mac Davis, who originally titled it "The Vicious Circle") and here we are...as relevent, and often played, today, 57 years later, as it was in 1969, when it was released. His backup singers were the Sweet Inspirations, which included Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston. Thank you for your great reaction.

Elvis grew up in poverty in the deep south. He listened to gospel music in the revival tents. He listened to blues. He saw what poverty could do firsthand to a son and his mother - as his father had to do time for writing a bad check. He had a deep relationship with his Mom who died when he was 23. Other viewers suggest "If I Can Dream" and I wholly agree. For some hopping fun Elvis performances, I also recommend "Polk Salad Annie" and "Suspicious Minds" from the 1970 Vegas shows.

To add some; Myrna Smith (of the Sweet Inspirations) said; 1970, Elvis was going to perform at the Houston Astrodome. He was told "You can leave the Black girls home", so he wasn't going to do the gig. Of course, the Dome relented. Usually, Elvis was driven around open arenas by himself. At the Dome, he made them provide 2 cars. Myrna said he "Demanded we be given the star treatment. We had to be in our convertible, where everyone could see us & our little blonde could drive us." There's vid on UA-cam of the 2 convertibles driving around the Dome arena.

When God created my friend Elvis he was just showing off. I can't tell you how much i love and miss him, there is not a day that goes by that i don't think of him and all the memories we made in 10 short years, his death knocked the wind out of me i have never been the same since, Elvis was the big brother i never had. He is also my guardian angel. Graceland is my go to place when it get's to hard to live w/o my friend i go there and walk around and remember Elvis and all the beautiful times we had together. He was the only person in my life that understood me and cared about my feelings and opinions. What it comes down to is we both needed a true friend and we were that for each other. Awesome reaction. Elvis grew up in the ghetto in Mississippi, in extreme poverty. He personally knew the experience. Once fame brought him money, he gave away cars, jewelry, money, etc to complete strangers. He was the most generous, talented entertainer EVER .

If the message of the song touches the singers heart, or it is a message the singer wants is passionate about, the song is sang with passion and from the heart. Elvis changed almost every song that was written.

Mac Davis who wrote the song said his original lyrics were Vicious Circle. Spot on! He grew up so poor but his best friend a black kid had it so much worse. If you haven't already look up his interviews at the time he wrote it. Peace.
This still hits home even today. Some want to help the children, Veterans and poor. Some assume they are just lazy. They just don't get the education, the jobs are not there. They don't know there can be something different because there is not many that can or will help. I love how Elvis enunciates so well. Thank you for your response to Elvis.

RE: your comment abt his Black B/G singers… true story: back in 1970 he was booked to play Houston, TX. The promoters told him he could just leave his Black girls behind. He replied that if they weren’t welcome, then he wasn’t coming either. So yes, he definitely stood up for all people.

Elvis Presley came from Tupelo Mississippi and was poor for a long time. His family went to a Baptist church which was mostly black. Elvis Presley grew up not knowing racism or color. The man was incredible.

None of them would touch it because it was too controversial for them. Mac offered it to Elvis and he did the song that the others were afraid to do.

He saw people. One venue he was to sing at told him he couldn't bring his back up singers because they are black and he said if he can't bring them then he wasn't going, either. I loved him.

Good reaction, thank you for sharing...I can relate to this song as well...We were a family of nine kids and a sick father who lost his job after 28 years working in Pittsburgh, Pa., We lived a community called Lincoln Beach, really don't know why wasn't any beach there...But we were one of five white families in the beach all the rest were black families...All of us children played together and were great friends...We were all poor at that point and life got tough...Dad went to a sanitorium where people had to stay that had Tuberculous, a communicable disease at that time...After we had lived with grand parents for awhile our dad came home and we went to live in a small house in Kentucky...We had $115.00 a month for everything, food, utilities, clothes from the thrift...Two beds, the girls in one and dad and the boys in the other...One meal a day, but some of the kids were old enough to work in the lunch room at school so they did get to eat for working...Sorry, not having a pity party just want to say- much like Elvis and family, we had so much love for one another that made it all okay...We did learn to love other people and no one was turned away from our table with what we had...And I look back on those days and realize how blessed we were...Love conquers all...Take care and God Bless...

Elvis grew up in a poor community in the Memphis area. He saw this first hand. That is why he has soul in his music and is known as the King!! He wrote and sang this in the late 60s or early 70s. Fitting for that era and sadly, still fits in today's society 60 years later.
