    Great video. First time watcher here. Nice to see something other than the brand new 20 million dollar barns. Thousands of these family farms provide our milk and cheese and loads of great dairy products. Good job and keep it up.

    Bryce, I do not know where to begin. Your channel was "suggested" by UA-cam - which says their algorithm is pushing you - because I like farming/ranching/dairy videos. I truly did not know there were any '50's style dairy farms left in America. I am so proud to see this operation has survived because it is exactly what made America Great. I liked and subscribed and will look forward to going back and seeing ALL of your work. I am impressed with your work effort

      I suspect that the vast majority of dairy farmers in the USA still milk like this however the majority of cows do not get milked in this sort of barn as the 10 percent biggest farmers own 90 percent of the cows and the other 90 percent of farmers own 10 percent of the cows .

    • @nsgkuaov
      @nsgkuaov 3 роки тому

      Blake Siegle (Student) I got it from dairy international a magazine we get over here in Europe, it surprised me so I looked it up on an American department of Ag website and it seems to be roughly correct, the other surprising thing (to me) was that the average American dairy farmer had only 112 animals in total, I couldn't ascertain whether that was milkers or both milkers and replacements , either way I would have thought that most American dairy farmers milked well in excess of 200 cows with many milking over 1000 , obviously this is not correct. I was looking up you tube to see if any of the more realistic videos of the American dairy industry and how they were doing as the majority of dairy farm videos I have come across are of very large operations with fantastic ultra modern facilities and large numbers of staff.

    • @nsgkuaov
      @nsgkuaov 3 роки тому

      Blake Siegle (Student) no I don't know of any tie up barns still in use most were replaced back in the 60's and 70's there were still a few up to about 20 years ago but I don't think there are any still in use most of the 18000 dairy farmers in Ireland milk in herring bone parlours with some ( about 800 as far as I know) using robots and about 400 rotaries but our system is primarily grass based and cows graze grass c. 8 to 9 months of the year and we generally have about 80 to 120 cows per labour unit and our output of is only about half of the American output c. 5000kg of milk and 450 kg of milk solids. On average but we only feed about 800 kg of feed per head the rest is grass and grass silage. So our costs of production is considerably less. The average Irish dairy farmer milks c. 90 cows and is a one man show. The other major difference is that by comparison to America we have almost no machinery one or two tractors and a few implements .

    • @nsgkuaov
      @nsgkuaov 3 роки тому

      Blake Siegle (Student) only a fraction of one percent of Irish cows do not get out to grass and it is wet in these islands but not so wet that we can't graze almost every day from February to November, we practice rotational grazing which means that the cows get an allotted amount of grass for 12 or 24 hours and will not be back on that section again for usually 21 days but that can vary a day or two depending on regrowth. We are the exception to the point as we are running a housed herd due to available grazing land and we bring the grass to the cows twice daily for about 300 days a year we are very much the exception to the rule and I only know of two other herds in the country who do this our cows are housed in a free stall shed and produce considerably more than the average grazed cows , we also feed considerably more meal .

    • @nsgkuaov
      @nsgkuaov 3 роки тому

      Blake Siegle (Student) oh we make grass silage aiming at 14 to 15 percent protein, dmd of better than 80 percent and dry matter of about 30 percent, many dairy farmers make some really good grass silage and some poorer quality stuff as they seasonal calve to expected grass growth and for the most part their cows are dry for the winter. Grass hay is made by some farmers but rarely by dairy farmers as it is a bit hit and miss due to our climate.

    Very well put together video man! You have a great attitude and solid work ethic. Thanks for sharing what you do. More people need to be educated as to how they get the milk they drink. Aint an easy task, especially during the winter!

I like the big beams in your barn. All you see anymore is pipes and concrete. You are also nice to your animals. Good video, looking forward to more. Peace.

It clearly makes me rea;ize why the milk we drink all across America is the finest milk in the world!! THANK YOU, Bryce!!!

    Reminds me of when I was on a farm while growing up. We didn't have all the new stuff that is in use today, but the basics are the same. Clean the teats, hook up the milkers, which were individual cans for each cow, dumped the milk into a larger can place in a chiller overnight, do the same in the AM, then deliver the milk to the creamery in town. They did all the testing and you got paid for the butterfat content and the poundage at the end of the month. Glad to see a young man interested in farming. Good luck in the future.

    How about doing a Q&A? Here are some questions you might consider, since you mentioned that you didn't have enough questions.
    -How old were you or when did you decide you wanted to become a dairy farmer?
    -How did you acquire all the knowledge about farming and machinery? Who taught you the most?
    -How many Ag courses have you taken in H.S.?
    -How did you get interested in making videos for your own youtube channel?
    -Do you get any H.S.or college credit for the videos you make? You really should.
    -You're a very intelligent guy and have great communication skills in English. Are you planning to go to college (or community college) to study Ag or finance like Cole the Cornstar? I'm not sure what Cole Sonne studied at SD State; Eric of Tenth Generation did not go to college, but he said if he did, he would get an MBA. Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison has a short course for young farmers you might consider.
    -How did you acquire the incredible work ethic that you have? Obviously your parents and grandparents are largely responsible, but were there others?
    -Your video and editing skills have improved immensely, and I love your sunrises and sunsets. Do you select all the music yourself?
    Good luck on a great adventure.

    I love watching you do your jobs milking I loved milking the cows. I had four brothers and a sister. The either wouldn't go near them or if they did it was only for the quiet ones . I used to spray th down with water in hot weather it was something I loved doing. Occassionly I would get a kicker,a switcher, it figitty cow. They would be fun to get the cups on once on the usually wasn't any more trouble unless they were new heifers.
    I tried to get around that by getting them used to the pre milking prepping proccess . That helped alot except if they were cranky or had sore teats.

And also just taking pride in calling my self a dairy farmer. I don’t have anything I dislike about being a dairy farmer, you just have some bad days once in a while.

    The somatic cell count is the number of white blood cells in the milk. An average count is 100,000-150,000. This is totally normal in cows. Cows with higher SCC tends to be an indication that she is fighting off an illness of some kind. But you also don't want a cow with too low of a SCC, because then she could react slower to an illness.

    Hey, looks like a hard job. How many hours do you work every day? Guess that helps to you so lean.

      It all depends on the day and if I have school or not, but for example I worked a 15 hour day last Sunday working both shifts.

    What is the current somatic cell count at ? , this is a very old fashioned milking system , in Ireland where I am almost all milking is done in swing over parlours or rotary parlours they are much quicker and cleaner for the operator
