If you're using a wifi-only iPad, like I am, you don't have to attach a router to the back of the iPad, but it makes it easier to move around and not lose connection to the cameras. The cellular version is obviously a cleaner setup, but this $50 router saved me hundreds of dollars and switching iPads is easier if something happens to this one.
This was fantastic - I got an refurbished 13'' ipad air (M2) from best buys for $500 w/ cellular in it. Only using it for monitoring, so the iPad pro would have been overkill and way more expensive. Thanks for this - helped make my buying decision.
I also am going to watch your video until the end now but I also have an Ipad that has not celular data among other problemas I have had with the connectivity even with my iPhone.
Thanks! You don't need an internet connection to use the monitor and control app. You can use it without an internet connection, you just need to generate a wifi network that all devices can connect to. (Wifi-only iPads cannont generate a wifi network)
@keith-knittel thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I was specifically pointing towards how the router generates Wi-Fi? Mobile plan? Hotspot?
@@BrianTheChristopher Yes, the router is generating the wifi. Then the iPad and all of the cameras connect to the wifi (you only have to set this up once)
So, i have an issue with mine, i have connected mine in the same way as this is already part of my setup for other things, i have 3 compatible cameras all connected to the router, all even have internet, my tablets are also connected to the router, however it constantly says no compatible cameras to connect to, i can connect individually and i can see on the router they're connected to the hotspot when trying multi cam but the list is always empty, also all are on latest and compatible firmwares
Hey @Cre8iveMedia - I’ve also bumped into the same situation. I’ve tried setting things up on two separate wifis and still the same issue. Have you found a solution to the problem?
@tokyoconan yes I did, I can't quite remember how but it was something about deleting the app and clearing the data and cache, removing the devices from the iPad connection list and reconnecting via the app and turning on encryption in the sony body's menu once connect3s they all showed in the multi cam area
Nice set up! Would you say the router add not only a bit more range, but speed to the M&C app? meaning that if you have several cameras connected, you'd drop less frames with the router on?
With the router, the multicam-view's frame rate is still pretty slow when there are 3 cameras connected and displayed all at once. Off the top of my head, I think it's between 6-10 frames per second for each camera. Going into a single camera view, you can choose to prioritize image quality (but have less frames) or frame rate (but have lower image quality)
@@keith-knittel if you were to go down the cellular route would you need to have a big data plan? Or is it just the network that the iPad will create that you will use and not the data?
@@petercarneyphoto You do not need to have a data plan at all, the wifi network that the iPad creates does not need to be connected to the internet for the multicam to work. The wifi only version of iPad is unable to create a wifi network, that is why you need a router to create a network for you. If you have the wifi+cellular version, you don't need the router.

But I feel like the overall kit is worth it for anyone who wants a director/client monitor or in your case multicam and protect their iPad at the same time. Plus it looks really professional 😁.
Yesterday I was on a shoot and it was kind of a nightmare, and I was just trying to use 1 camera (FX30) and my iPhone. Took me forever to get it connected but once I did it worked until I turned off my camera or closed my iPhone. When starting my camera back up it would always give the failed to connect to the camera warning and then I would have to fiddle for over 20 minutes trying to get it to connect again. I was able to get a signal about 100 feet away through 4 walls before the signal dropped out, If you have a lot of area to cover, taking the router off of the ipad and placing the router between the ipad and cameras will help a lot, or if you really need to, use a mesh network. Most of the things I'm doing with Sony multi cam, the camera is within 50 feet of the iPad, so I just put it on the back of the iPad. I'm sure this isn't the optimal use-case for the router's signal, but it's working fine for what I need it to do
